This paper deals with the temporal nonlinear dynamics of plasmon-solitons in a plasmonic waveguide. Duffing equation is recognized as the temporal part of the nonlinear amplitude equation governing the plasmonic waveguide. It is shown that Duffing oscillator waveforms stand for the temporal nonlinear dynamics of plasmon-soliton waves. The exchange of Lorentz-type bright and dark solitons energies gives rise to a Fano resonance. It is thus shown that the interaction of solitons and the formation of plasmon-solitons is inherently nonlinear. It is accordingly indicated that the nonlinear modulation of the plasmon-solitons is achievable via tuning the nonlinearity of the plasmonic waveguide.
We present a theoretical study of plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) formed in two-dimensional (2D) arrays of metallic nanowires embedded into a nonlinear medium with Kerr nonlinearity. We analyze two classes of 2D PLSs families, namely, fundamental and vortical PLSs in both focusing and defocusing media. Their existence, stability, and subwavelength spatial confinement are studied in detail.
We predict multiband vector Plasmonic Lattice Solitons (PLSs) in metal-dielectric waveguide arrays, in both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. Such vector solitons consist of two components originating from different transmission bands. By simulating the full nonlinear Maxwell equations (MEs), we demonstrate the diffractionless propagation of vector PLSs and their discrete diffraction when only one component is present. Their subwavelength size characteristics and the influences of metallic losses are also studied.
The propagation of solitary waves in a Bragg grating formed by an array of thin nanostructured dielectric films is considered. A system of equations of Maxwell-Duffing type and describing forward- and backward-propagating waves in such a grating, is derived. Exact solitary wave solutions are found, analyzed, and compared with the results of direct numerical simulations.
We reveal the existence of the surface plasmonic lattice solitons (surface PLSs) at the boundary of a semi-infinite metallic-dielectric periodic nano-structure. We find that the truncation of the periodic structure imposes a threshold power for the existence of surface PLSs, and enhances significantly the modal localization. The propagation and excitation of surface PLSs as well as their potential application in the all-optical subwavelength switching are also demonstrated.
We describe an effective resonant interaction between two localized wave modes of different nature: a plasmon-polariton at a metal surface and a self-focusing beam (spatial soliton) in a non-linear dielectric medium. Propagating in the same direction, they represent an exotic coupled-waveguide system, where the resonant interaction is controlled by the soliton amplitude. This non-linear system manifests hybridized plasmon-soliton eigenmodes, mutual conversion, and non-adiabatic switching, which offer exciting opportunities for manipulation of plasmons via spatial solitons.
We predict theoretically that stable subwavelength plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) are formed in arrays of metallic nanowires embedded in a nonlinear medium. The tight confinement of the guiding modes of the metallic nanowires, combined with the strong nonlinearity induced by the enhanced field at the metal surface, provide the main physical mechanisms for balancing the wave diffraction and the formation of PLSs. As the conditions required for the formation of PLSs are satisfied in a variety of plasmonic systems, we expect these nonlinear modes to have important applications to subwavelength…
Nonlinear properties of a multi-layer stack of graphene sheets are studied. It is predicted that such a structure may support dissipative plasmon-solitons generated and supported by an external laser radiation. Novel nonlinear equations describing spatial dynamics of the nonlinear plasmons driven by a plane wave in the Otto configuration are derived and the existence of single and multi-hump dissipative solitons in the graphene structure is predicted.
We study nonlinear modes in one-dimensional arrays of doped graphene nanodisks with Kerr-type nonlinear response in the presence of an external electric field. We present the theoretical model describing the evolution of the disks' polarizations, taking into account intrinsic graphene losses and dipole-dipole coupling between the graphene nanodisks. We reveal that this nonlinear system can support discrete dissipative scalar solitons of both longitudinal and transverse polarizations, as well as vector solitons composed of two mutually coupled polarization components. We demonstrate the formati…
We investigate the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics of light emitted in an active plasmonic waveguide composed of a thin film of gold sandwiched by two silicon layers immersed in externally pumped Al$_2$O$_3$:Er$^{3+}$. We model optical propagation in such a dissipative system through a generalized cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation accounting for the amplification of the active medium and the effect of absorption and thermo-modulational nonlinearity of gold. We find that heating heavily affects the propagation of temporal dissipative solitons in such a plasmonic waveguide by producing a soliton self-…
We demonstrate that soliton-plasmon bound states appear naturally as propagating eigenmodes of nonlinear Maxwell's equations for a metal/dielectric/Kerr interface. By means of a variational method, we give an explicit and simplified expression for the full-vector nonlinear operator of the system. Soliplasmon states (propagating surface soliton-plasmon modes) can be then analytically calculated as eigenmodes of this non-selfadjoint operator. The theoretical treatment of the system predicts the key features of the stationary solutions and gives physical insight to understand the inherent stabili…
We study the interband self-induced transmission of surface plasmon polaritons in a gold film surrounded by an external Kerr medium. We model the optical propagation by using a version of the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the field envelope coupled to Bloch equations for valence electrons of gold, predicting self-induced transparency of ultrashort plasmon solitons with a pulse duration below 10 fs. We demonstrate that the Kerr nonlinearity from the surrounding dielectric can be used to compensate for the group velocity dispersion, and that the impact of dephasing and decay pro…
We study the nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation with a PT-symmetric potential. Using a hydrodynamic formulation and connecting the phase gradient to the field amplitude, allows for a reduction of the model to a Duffing or a generalized Duffing equation. This way, we can obtain exact soliton solutions existing in the presence of suitable PT-symmetric potentials, and study their stability and dynamics. We report interesting new features, including oscillatory instabilities of solitons and (nonlinear) PT-symmetry breaking transitions, for focusing and defocusing nonlinearities.
We perform numerical analysis of a finite nanoparticle array, in which the transversal dipolar polarizations are excited by a homogenous optical field. Considering the linearly long-range dipole-dipole interaction and the cubic dipole nonlinearity of particle, the characteristics of stability of a finite number nanoparticle array should be revised, compared with that of an infinite number nanoparticle array. A critical point in the low branch of the bistable curve is found, beyond which the low branch becomes unstable for a finite number of nanoparticles. The influence of the external field in…
We investigate the dynamics of a soliton that behaves as an extended particle. The soliton motion in an effective bistable potential can be chaotic in a similar way as the Duffing oscillator. We generalize the concept of geometrical resonance to spatiotemporal systems and apply it to design a nonfeedback mechanism of chaos control using localized perturbations. We show the existence of solitonic stochastic resonance.
Plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in advanced materials has attracted extensive attention for both theoretical and applied physics. Here, we considered a scheme that can produce PIT and studied the characteristics of ultraslow low-power magnetic solitons. The PIT metamaterial is constructed as an array of unit cells that consist of two coupled varactor-loaded split-ring resonators. Simulations verified that ultraslow magnetic solitons can be generated in this type of metamaterial. To solve nonlinear equations, various types of numerical methods can be applied by virtue of exact solutions, whi…
We report localized and unidirectional nonlinear traveling edge waves discovered theoretically and numerically in a 2D mechanical (phononic) topological insulator. The lattice consists of a collection of pendula with weak Duffing nonlinearity connected by linear springs. We show that the classical 1D nonlinear Schrodinger equation governs the envelope of 2D edge modes, and study the propagation of traveling waves and rogue waves in 1D as edge solitons in 2D. As a result of topological protection, these edge solitons persist over long time intervals and through irregular boundaries.
We demonstrate that the cubic gain applied in a localized region, which is embedded into a bulk waveguide with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity and uniform linear losses, supports stable spatial solitons in the absence of the quintic dissipation. The system, featuring the bistability between the solitons and zero state (which are separated by a family of unstable solitons), may be used as a nonlinear amplifier for optical and plasmonic solitons, which, on the contrary to previously known settings, does not require gain saturation. The results are obtained in an analytical form and corroborated b…
In this contribution we introduce a new strategy for the compensation of plasmonic losses based on a recently proposed nonlinear mechanism: the resonant interaction between surface plasmon polaritons and spatial solitons propagating in parallel along a metal/dielectric/Kerr structure. This mechanism naturally leads to the generation of a quasi-particle excitation, the so-called soliplasmon resonance. We analyze the role played by the effective nonlinear coupling inherent to this system and how this can be used to provide a new mechanism of quasi-resonant nonlinear excitation of surface plasmon…
The creation of stable 1D and 2D localized modes in lossy nonlinear media is a fundamental problem in optics and plasmonics. This article gives a short review of theoretical methods elaborated for this purpose, using localized gain applied at one or several "hot spots" (HSs). The introduction surveys a broad class of models for which this approach was developed. Other sections focus in some detail on basic 1D continuous and discrete systems, where the results can be obtained, partly or fully, in an analytical form (verified by comparison with numerical results), which provides a deeper insight…

Plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) displays complex nonlinear dynamics that find critical phenomena in areas such as nonlinear waves. However, such a nonlinear solution depends sensitively on the selection of parameters and different potentials in the Schrödinger equation. Despite this complexity, the machine learning community has developed remarkable efficiencies in predicting complicated datasets by regression. Here, we consider a recurrent neural network (RNN) approach to predict the complex propagation of nonlinear solitons in plasmon-induced transparency metamaterial systems with applied…
We present a first-principles derivation of the variational equations describing the dynamics of the interaction of a spatial soliton and a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagating along a metal/dielectric interface. The variational ansatz is based on the existence of solutions exhibiting differentiated and spatially resolvable localized soliton and SPP components. These states, referred to as soliplasmons, can be physically understood as bound states of a soliton and a SPP. Their respective dispersion relations permit the existence of a resonant interaction between them, as pointed out in …
A numerical study of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation subject to homogeneous Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions in the finite line is presented. The results are compared with both the exact analytical ones for the initial-value problem (IVP) of the NLS equation and the numerical ones for periodic boundary conditions. It is shown that initial solutions obtained by truncating the exact N-soliton solution of the IVP of the NLS equation into a finite interval develop solitary waves that behave as solitons, even after collisions with the boundaries. For periodic and homogeneou…
This article offers a comprehensive survey of results obtained for solitons and complex nonlinear wave patterns supported by purely nonlinear lattices (NLs), which represent a spatially periodic modulation of the local strength and sign of the nonlinearity, and their combinations with linear lattices. A majority of the results obtained, thus far, in this field and reviewed in this article are theoretical. Nevertheless, relevant experimental settings are surveyed too, with emphasis on perspectives for implementation of the theoretical predictions in the experiment. Physical systems discussed in…
