The self-consistent evaluation of Hubbard parameters using linear-response theory is crucial for quantitatively predictive calculations based on Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory. Here, we extend a recently-introduced approach based on density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) for the calculation of the on-site Hubbard $U$ to also compute the inter-site Hubbard $V$. DFPT allows to reduce significantly computational costs, improve numerical accuracy, and fully automate the calculation of the Hubbard parameters by recasting the linear response of a localized perturbation into an array of monochromatic perturbations that can be calculated in the primitive cell. In addition, here we generalize the entire formalism from norm-conserving to ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations, and to metallic ground states. After benchmarking DFPT against the conventional real-space Hubbard linear response in a supercell, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the present extended Hubbard formulation in determining the equilibrium crystal structure of Li$_x$MnPO$_4$ (x=0,1) and the subtle energetics of Li intercalation.
Structure factors obtained from diffraction experiments are one of the most important quantities for characterizing the electronic and structural properties of materials. Methods for calculating this quantity from plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) codes are typically prohibitively expensive to perform, requiring the electron density to be constructed and evaluated on dense real-space grids. Making use of the projector functions found in both the Vanderbilt ultrasoft pseudopotential and projector augmented wave methods, we implement an approach to calculate structure factors which avoi…
We present a method for the first-principles calculation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) J-coupling in extended systems using state-of-the-art ultrasoft pseudopotentials and including scalar-relativistic effects. The use of ultrasoft pseudopotentials is allowed by extending the projector augmented wave (PAW) method of Joyce et. al [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 204107 (2007)]. We benchmark it against existing local-orbital quantum chemical calculations and experiments for small molecules containing light elements, with good agreement. Scalar-relativistic effects are included at the zeroth-order regu…
We report a theoretical scheme that enables the calculation of maximally localized Wannier functions in the formalism of projector-augmented-waves (PAW) which also includes the ultrasoft-pseudopotential (USPP) approach. We give a description of the basic underlying formalism and explicitly write all the required matrix elements from the common ingredients of the PAW/USPP theory. We report an implementation of the method in a form suitable to accept the input electronic structure from USPP plane-wave DFT simulations. We apply the method to the calculation of Wannier functions, dipole moments an…
We present a density functional theory based method for calculating NMR shielding tensors for 3d transition metal nuclei using periodic boundary conditions. Calculations employ the gauge-including projector augmented-wave pseudopotentials method. The effects of ultrasoft pseudopotential and induced approximations on the second-order magnetic response are intensively examined. The reliability and the strength of the approach for 49Ti and 51V nuclei is shown by comparison with traditional quantum chemical methods, using benchmarks of finite organometallic systems. Application to infinite systems…
We present a formulation of the density-functional theory + Hubbard model (DFT+U) method that is self-consistent over the choice of Hubbard projectors used to define the correlated subspaces. In order to overcome the arbitrariness in this choice, we propose the use of non-orthogonal generalized Wannier functions (NGWFs) as projectors for the DFT+U correction. We iteratively refine these NGWF projectors and, hence, the DFT+U functional, such that the correlated subspaces are fully self-consistent with the DFT+U ground-state. We discuss the convergence characteristics of this algorithm and compa…
An implementation of full self-consistency over the electronic density in the DFT+DMFT framework on the basis of a plane wave-projector augmented wave (PAW) DFT code is presented. It allows for an accurate calculation of the total energy in DFT+DMFT within a plane wave approach. In contrast to frameworks based on the maximally localized Wannier function, the method is easily applied to f electron systems, such as cerium, cerium oxide (Ce2O3) and plutonium oxide (Pu2O3). In order to have a correct and physical calculation of the energy terms, we find that the calculation of the self-consistent …
We present a derivation of the exact expression for Pulay forces in density-functional theory calculations augmented with extended Hubbard functionals, and arising from the use of orthogonalized atomic orbitals as projectors for the Hubbard manifold. The derivative of the inverse square root of the orbital overlap matrix is obtained as a closed-form solution of the associated Lyapunov (Sylvester) equation. The expression for the resulting contribution to the forces is presented in the framework of ultrasoft pseudopotentials and the projector-augmented-wave method, and using a plane wave basis …
The so-called local density approximation plus the multi-orbital mean-field Hubbard model (LDA+U) has been implemented within the all-electron projector augmented-wave method (PAW), and then used to compute the insulating antiferromagnetic ground state of NiO and its optical properties. The electronic and optical properties have been investigated as a function of the Coulomb repulsion parameter U. We find that the value obtained from constrained LDA (U=8 eV) is not the best possible choice, whereas an intermediate value (U=5 eV) reproduces the experimental magnetic moment and optical propertie…
We study the lattice dynamics of group IV semiconductors using fully ab-initio extended Hubbard functional. The onsite and intersite Hubbard interactions are determined self-consistently with recently developed pseudohybrid functionals and included in force calculations. We analyze the Pulay forces by the choice of atomic orbital projectors and the force contribution of the onsite and intersite Hubbard terms. The phonon dispersions, Gruneisen parameters, and lattice thermal conductivities of diamond, silicon, and germanium, which are most-representative covalent-bonding semiconductors, are ca…

We present a first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of pyrolusite ($β$-MnO$_2$) using conventional and extended Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory (DFT+$U$ and DFT+$U$+$V$). The onsite $U$ and intersite $V$ Hubbard parameters are computed using linear-response theory in the framework of density-functional perturbation theory. We show that while the inclusion of the onsite $U$ is crucial to describe the localized nature of the Mn($3d$) states, the intersite $V$ is key to capture accurately the strong hybridization between neighboring Mn($3…
The knowledge of effective masses is a key ingredient to analyze numerous properties of semiconductors, like carrier mobilities, (magneto-)transport properties, or band extrema characteristics yielding carrier densities and density of states. Currently, these masses are usually calculated using finite-difference estimation of density functional theory (DFT) electronic band curvatures. However, finite differences require an additional convergence study and are prone to numerical noise. Moreover, the concept of effective mass breaks down at degenerate band extrema. We assess the former limitatio…
It is demonstrated that the signatures of the Hubbard Model in the strongly interacting regime can be simulated by modifying the screening in the limit of zero wavevector in Projector-Augmented Wave GW calculations for systems without significant nesting. This modification, when applied to the Mott insulator CuO, results in the opening of the Mott gap by the splitting of states at the Fermi level into upper and lower Hubbard bands, and exhibits a giant transfer of spectral weight upon electron doping. The method is also employed to clearly illustrate that the M$_{1}$ and M$_{2}$ forms of vanad…

We present an approach to the DFT+U method (Density Functional Theory + Hubbard model) within which the computational effort for calculation of ground state energies and forces scales linearly with system size. We employ a formulation of the Hubbard model using nonorthogonal projector functions to define the localized subspaces, and apply it to a local-orbital DFT method including in situ orbital optimization. The resulting approach thus combines linear-scaling and systematic variational convergence. We demonstrate the scaling of the method by applying it to nickel oxide nano-clusters with siz…
We propose a method to decompose the total energy of a supercell containing defects into contributions of individual atoms, using the energy density formalism within density functional theory. The spatial energy density is unique up to a gauge transformation, and we show that unique atomic energies can be calculated by integrating over Bader and charge-neutral volumes for each atom. Numerically, we implement the energy density method in the framework of the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) for both norm-conserving and ultrasoft pseudopotentials and the projector augmented wave method…
Ab-initio spin-polarized Density Functional Theory plus U is used to study the electronic and magnetic properties of tetragonal doped barium titanate (Ba$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$O$_3$) system for different europium (Eu$^{3+}$) concentrations. For this study, the Projector Augmented Wave (PAW) method and a Perdew-Zunger (LSDA) approximation, which has been used for the exchange correlation energy, have been considered taking into account a supercell model. In this model, the spin polarization as well as the Hubbard's potential have been used for the correction of the electron-electron Coulomb interactions…
