The local variation in inter-atomic distances, or local lattice strain often influences significantly material properties of nanoparticles. Strain measurement with ~1% precision is provided by recent atomic-resolution electron microscopy. However, the precision has been limited by noises in the experimental data. Here, we have applied one of the data-driven analyses, Gaussian process regression to predict true form of strain. The precision has been improved to be sub-percent of 0.2 % and more for detection of local strain. Rod-shaped nanoparticles have been revealed to contain characteristic lattice expansion ~+0.6 % around the subsurface cap tip area. The experimental results are reproduced by molecular dynamics simulations of the corresponding shaped atomic models. The strain peculiar to nanorods are explained in terms of curvature-dependent non-uniform surface stress due to shape anisotropy. The present results bring a hint to nanoscale engineering to optimize the strain in nanoparticles by shape control.
We report the effects of variation in length on the electronic structure of CdSe nanorods derived from atomic clusters and passivated by fictitious hydrogen atoms. These nanorods are augmented by attaching gold clusters at both the ends to form a nanodumbbell. The goal is to assess the changes at nanolevel after formation of contacts with gold clusters serving as electrodes and compare the results with experimental observations [PRL, 95, 056805 (2005)]. Calculations involving nanorods of length 4.6 Angstrom to 116.6 Angstrom are performed using density functional theory implemented within plan…
In this article, we report the growth of gold nanorods on glass substrates and copper nanoparticle thin films by cylindrical direct current magnetron sputtering (CDCMS) at room temperature. The grown gold nanorods have short lengths of < 20nm and show negative optical parameters in UV-Vis region. So far negative permittivity and permeability were only shown for complex artificial structures. In a case of simple structures like gold nanorods, the negative optical parameters were only predicted by simulation methods and considering ideal structures and they were not yet reported by experimental …
We have investigated in detail the growth dynamics of gold nanorods with various aspect ratios in different surrounding environments. Surprisingly, a blue shift in the temporal evolution of colloidal gold nanorods in aqueous medium has been observed during the growth of nanorods by UV visible absorption spectroscopy. The longitudinal surface plasmon resonance peak evolves as soon as the nanorods start to grow from spheres, and the system undergoes a blue shift in the absorption spectra. Although a red-shift is expected as a natural phenomenon during the growth process of all nanosystems, our b…
We describe a soft matter system of self-organized oblate micelles and plasmonic gold nanorods that exhibit a negative orientational order parameter. Because of anisotropic surface anchoring interactions, colloidal gold nanorods tend to align perpendicular to the director describing the average orientation of normals to the discoidal micelles. Helicoidal structures of highly concentrated nanorods with a negative order parameter are realized by adding a chiral additive and are further controlled by means of confinement and mechanical stress. Polarization-sensitive absorption, scattering, and tw…
The influence of the orientation of gold nanorods in different assemblies has been investigated using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation method. To understand the relative orientation, we vary the size and angle in dimer geometries. Significant effects of plasmon coupling emerged in longitudinal resonances having end-to-end configurations of gold nanorods. The effect of orientational plasmon coupling in dimers gives rise to both bonding and anti-bonding plasmon modes. Effects of various geometries like primary monomer, dimer, trimer, and tetramer structures have been explored …
Nanofibers functionalized by metal nanostructures and particles are exploited as effective flexible substrates for SERS analysis. Their complex three-dimensional structure may provide Raman signals enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to untextured surfaces. Understanding the origin of such improved performances is therefore very important for pushing nanofiber-based analytical technologies to their upper limit. Here we report on polymer nanofiber mats which can be exploited as substrates for enhancing the Raman spectra of adsorbed probe molecules. The increased surface area and the scatte…
CdSe-Au networks were synthesized by a colloidal chemistry technique. They entail CdSe nanorods with a diameter of ~10 nm and a length of ~40 nm, which are joined together by Au domains (~5 nm). Individual networks were positioned by AC dielectrophoresis between bow-tie electrodes with a gap of ~100 nm and their conductivity as well as the photoelectrical properties were investigated. Nanorod networks, with multiple Au domains on the nanorod surface, displayed stable conductivity that was not sensitive to blue laser light illumination. Such nanostructures were transformed by thermal annealing …
Gold nanoparticle assemblies show a strong plasmonic response due to the combined effects of the individual nanoparticles' plasmon modes. Increasing the number of nanoparticles in structured assemblies leads to significant shifts in the optical and physical properties. We use Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations to analyze the electromagnetic response of structurally ordered gold nanorods in monomer and dimer configurations. The plasmonic coupling between nanorods in monomers or dimers configurations provides a unique technique for tuning the spectrum intensity, spatial distributio…
We report ultrafast electron dynamics in gold nanorods investigated using 80 fs laser pulses centered at 1.57 eV. Five types of nanorod colloidal suspensions in water having their longitudinal surface plasmon peak (ELSP) on either side of the laser photon energy (EL) have been studied. For ELSP>EL, photo-induced absorption with single decay time constant is observed. On the other hand, for ELSP<EL, photo-bleaching is observed having biexponential decay dynamics; the faster one between 1-3 ps and slower one between 7ps to 22ps both of them increasing almost linearly with the difference |EL-ELSP…
We investigate chemo-photothermal effects of gold nanorods (GNRs) coated using mesoporous silica (mSiO2) loading doxorubicin (DOX). When the mesoporous silica layer is embedded by doxorubicin drugs, a significant change in absorption spectra enable to quantify the drug loading. We carry out photothermal experiments on saline and livers of mice having GNRs@mSiO2 and GNRs@mSiO2-DOX. We also inject the gold nanostructures into many tumor-implanted mice and use laser illumination on some of them. By measuring weight and size of tumors, the distinct efficiency of photothermal therapy and chemothera…
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has the capacity of detecting trace amount of biological or chemical matter, even single molecules, through the use of metallic nanostructures such as nanorods. Silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanorods have led to the impressive enhancement of Raman signals, but they are either expensive, degrade fast over time, or suffer from poor sample repeatability. In contrast, Al is much less expensive, and Al nanorods could potentially be resistant to degradation over time due to the protection from native aluminum-oxide layers. Unfortunately, the controllable growth…
An ideal support for electron microscopy shall be as thin as possible and interact as little as possible with the primary electrons. Since graphene is atomically thin and made up of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, the potential to use graphene as substrate in electron microscopy is enormous. Until now graphene has hardly ever been used for this purpose because the cleanliness of freestanding graphene before or after deposition of the objects of interest was insufficient. We demonstrate here by means of low-energy electron holographic imaging that freestanding graphene prepared wi…
ZnS nanorods and Cr2O3 nanoparticle decorated ZnS nanorods were synthesized using facile hydrothermal techniques and their ethanol sensing properties were examined. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed the good crystallinity and size uniformity of the ZnS nanorods. The Cr2O3 nanoparticle decorated ZnS nanorod sensor showed stronger response to ethanol than the pristine ZnS nanorod sensor. The responses of the pristine and decorated nanorod sensors to 200 ppm of ethanol at 300oC were 2.9 and 13.8, respectively. Furthermore, under these conditions, the decorated nanorod se…
The performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) can be greatly improved by incorporating silica-coated gold nanorods (Au@SiO2 NRs) at the interface between the hole transporting layer and the active layer due to the plasmonic effect. The silica shell impedes the aggregation effect of the Au NRs in ethanol solution as well as the server charge recombination on the surface of the Au NRs otherwise they would bring forward serious reduction in open circuit voltage when incorporating the Au NRs at the positions in contact with the active materials. As a result, while the high open circuit voltage bei…
The growth and atomic/electronic structure of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown ErAs nanoparticles and nanorods embedded within a GaAs matrix are examined for the first time via cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (XSTM) and spectroscopy (XSTS). Cross sections enable the interrogation of the internal structure and are well suited for studying embedded nanostructures. The early stages of embedded ErAs nanostructure growth are examined via these techniques and compared with previous cross sectional TEM work. Tunneling spectroscopy I(V) for both ErAs nanoparticles and nanorods was also…
We investigated the localized electronic properties of nanoporous gold films by using an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope at low temperature (4.2 K). Second derivative scanning tunneling spectroscopy shows the plasmon peaks of the nanoporous gold films, which are excited by inelastic tunneling electrons. We propose that the nanorod model is appropriate for nanoporous gold studies at the nanometer-scale. These results are supported by a 3D electron tomography analysis and theoretical calculations of nanoporous gold with ellipsoid shape.
The factors controlling the size and morphology of nanoparticles have so far been poorly understood. Data-driven techniques are an exciting avenue to explore this field through the identification of trends and correlations in data. However, for these techniques to be utilized, large datasets annotated with the structural attributes of nanoparticles are required. While experimental SEM/TEM images collected from controlled experiments are reliable sources of this information, large-scale collection of these images across a variety of experimental conditions is expensive and infeasible. Published…
We report a simple, rapid, and quantitative wide-field technique to measure the optical extinction $σ_{\rm ext}$ and scattering $σ_{\rm sca}$ cross-section of single nanoparticles using wide-field microscopy enabling simultaneous acquisition of hundreds of nanoparticles for statistical analysis. As a proof of principle, we measured nominally spherical gold nanoparticles of 40\,nm and 100\,nm diameter and found mean values and standard deviations of $σ_{\rm ext}$ and $σ_{\rm sca}$ consistent with previous literature. Switching from unpolarized to linearly polarized excitation, we measured $σ_{\…
The plasmonic properties of vacuum evaporated nanostructured gold thin films having different types of nanoparticles are presented. The films with more than 6 nm thickness show presence of nanorods having non cylindrical shape with triangular base. Two characteristics plasmon bands have been recoreded in absorption spectra. First one occurs below 500 nm and other one at higher wavelength side. Both the peaks show dependence on the dielectric property of surroundings. The higher wavelength localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak shifts to higher wavelength with an increase in the nanopa…
Eutectic related reaction is a special chemical/physical reaction involving multiple phases, solid and liquid. Visualization of phase reaction of composite nanomaterials with high spatial and temporal resolution provides a key understanding of alloy growth with important industrial applications. However, it has been a rather challenging task. Here we report the direct imaging and control of the phase reaction dynamics of a single, as-grown free-standing gallium arsenide nanowire encapped with a gold nanoparticle, free from environmental confinement or disturbance, using four-dimensional electr…
Flower-like nanostructures formed by ZnO nanorods were synthesized and deposited on seeded silicon and glass substrates by a hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) - assisted hydrothermal method at low temperature (90 oC) with methenamine ((CH3)6N4), as surfactant and catalyst. The substrates were seeded with ZnO nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the nanostructures were studied by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Influence of the seed nanoparticle on the formation of the flower-lik…
Understanding nanomechanical response of materials represents a scientific challenge. Here, we have used in-situ electron microscopy to reveal drastic for the first time changes of structural behavior during deformation of 1-nm-wide metal rods as a function of temperature. At 300 K, stretched nanowires stay defect-free, while at 150 K, elongation is associated with planar defects. As size is reduced, energy barriers become so small that ambient thermal energy is sufficient to overcome them. Nanorods display an elastic regime until a mechanism with high enough blocking barrier can be nucleated.…
UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy is frequently used to characterize the size and shape of gold nanoparticles. We present a full-spectrum model that yields reliable results for the commonly encountered case of mixtures of spheres and rods in varying proportions. We determine the volume fractions of the two populations, the aspect ratio distribution of the nanorods (average value and variance) and the interface damping parameter. We validate the model by checking the fit results against small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy data and show that correctly accounting for th…
We demonstrate here that the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) obtained in micellar solutions are susceptible to the precursor complex nature and specific counterion effects controlling the reaction kinetics, particles size and shape. The tested approach consisted in reducing the HAuCl4 complex with ascorbic acid or citric acid in dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTA) solutions, at 318 K, in the presence of bromide (Br), methanesulfonate (Ms), trifluoroacetate (TFA) or trifluoromethanesulfonate (Tf) ions. Bromide ions replaced the chloride ions in the precursor gold complex, and no nanoparticle formation co…
In this study nanoscale structure and associated energy dissipation behavior of nanoparticulates of tungsten disulphide (WS2) and nanoparticles of gold (Au) were investigated by advanced scanning probe and electron microscopy techniques. WS2 nanoparticulates were deposited on silicon substrate by van der Waals adhesion transfer-deposition mechanisms. The templates of three size variants of Au nanoparticles, close packed (4-6nm), well dispersed (120-150nm) and clusters of (120-150 nm) nanoparticles were prepared on silicon substrates. Nano-microstructure, morphology, topography and phase shift …
High surface area graphene sheets were obtained by electrochemical exfoliation of graphite in an acid media under constant potential conditions. Filtration and centrifugation processes played an important role in order to obtain stable dispersions in water. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging revealed highly exfoliated crystalline samples of ~5(\mum). Raman, FT-IR and XPS spectroscopy further confirmed the high quality of the exfoliated material. The electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) was decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNP) using …
Photothermal effects of gold core-shell nanoparticles and nanorods dispersed in water are theoretically investigated using the transient bioheat equation and the extended Mie theory. Properly calculating the absorption cross section is an extremely crucial milestone to determine the elevation of solution temperature. The nanostructures are assumed to be randomly and uniformly distributed in the solution. Compared to previous experiments, our theoretical temperature increase during laser light illumination provides, in various systems, both reasonable qualitative and quantitative agreement. Thi…
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study on morphological changes in gold nanostructures deposited on Si (100) upon annealing under different vacuum conditions has been reported. Au thin films of thickness ~2.0 nm were deposited under high vacuum condition (with the native oxide at the interface of Au and Si) using thermal evaporation. In-situ, high temperature (from room temperature (RT) to 850\degreeC) real time TEM measurements showed the evaluation of gold nanoparticles into rectangular/square shaped gold silicide structures. This has been attributed to selective thermal decomposition …
The dependence of the surface plasmons resonance (SPR) frequency on the size of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is experimentally studied. The measured data for the SPR frequency by UV-Vis spectroscopy and GNPs diameter by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are collected in the course of classical citrate GNPs synthesis. The relationship between the GNPs size and the blue shift of the light absorption is presented. They are fitted by an equation with a single free parameter, the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding media. Th…
We propose and theoretically analyze a new vibrational spectroscopy, termed electron- and light-induced stimulated Raman (ELISR) scattering, that combines the high spatial resolution of electron microscopy with the molecular sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. With ELISR, electron-beam excitation of plasmonic nanoparticles is utilized as a spectrally-broadband but spatially-confined Stokes beam in the presence of a diffraction-limited pump laser. To characterize this technique, we develop a numerical model and conduct full-field electromagnetic simulations to investigate two di…
