We consider a microscopy setting where quantum light is used for illumination. Spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) is used as a source of a heralded single photon, which is quantum light prepared in a Fock state. We present analytical formulas for the spatial mode tracking along with the heralded and non-heralded mode widths. The obtained analytical results are supported by numerical calculations and the following discussion taking into account realistic setup parameters such as finite-size optics and finite-size single-photon detectors. This allows us to observe that the diffraction limit can be approached with simultaneous alleviation of the photon loss leading to increased signal-to-noise ratio - a factor limiting practical applications of quantum light. Additionally, it is shown that the spatial resolution can be manipulated by carefully preparing the amplitude and phase of the spatial mode profile of the single photon at the input to the microscope objective. Here, the spatial entanglement of the biphoton wavefunction or adaptive optics can be applied for spatial mode shaping. Analytical dependencies between the incident and focused spatial mode profiles parameters are provided.
The generation of heralded pure Fock states via spontaneous parametric down conversion (PDC) relies on perfect photon-number correlations in the output modes. Correlations in any other degree of freedom, however, degrade the purity of the heralded state. In this paper, we investigate spectral entanglement between the two output modes of a periodically poled waveguide. With the intent of generating heralded 1- and 2-photon Fock states, we expand the output state of the PDC to second order in photon number. We explore the effects of spectral filtering and inefficient detection, of the heralding …
We propose a technique for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement and heralded preparation of Fock states by dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). An atomic ensemble trapped in an optical cavity is driven by two external continuous-wave classical fields to form EIT in steady state. As soon as a weak coherent field is injected into the cavity, the EIT system departs from steady state, falls into transient state dynamics by the dispersive coupling between cavity injected photons and atoms. Because the imaginary part of time-dependent linear susceptibility Im[X(t)] of the a…
We demonstrate heralded qubit amplification for Time-Bin and Fock-state qubits in an all-fibre, telecom-wavelength, scheme that highlights the simplicity, the stability and potential for fully integrated photonic solutions. Exploiting high-efficiency superconducting detectors, the gain, the fidelity and the performance of the amplifier are studied as a function of loss. We also demonstrate the first heralded Fock-state qubit amplifier without post-selection. This provides a significant advance towards demonstrating Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution as well as fundamental tests of qua…
Based on heralded interference on a six-port Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we propose protocols to generate a series of multiphoton states in primary output port, by injecting a coherent state in primary input port and two Fock states in two ancillary input ports, and measuring two Fock states in two ancillary output ports. Only manipulating at the single-photon level (i.e, |0> or |1>) in all ancillary ports, we generate sixteen types (six categories) of multiphoton nonclassical states, whose state vectors are unified as superposition of a new coherent state, a single-photon added coherent stat…
We develop a technique for generating multi-photon nonclassical states via interference between coherent and Fock states using quantum catalysis. By modulating the coherent field strength, the number of catalyst photons and the ratio of the beam splitter upon which they interfere, a wide range of nonclassical phenomena can be created, including squeezing of up to 1.25 dB, anti- and super-bunched photon statistics and states exhibiting over 90% fidelity to displaced coherent superposition states. We perform quantum catalysis experimentally, showing tunability into the nonclassical regime. Our p…
A BosonSampling device is a quantum machine expected to perform tasks intractable for a classical computer, yet requiring minimal non-classical resources as compared to full-scale quantum computers. Photonic implementations to date employed sources based on inefficient processes that only simulate heralded single-photon statistics when strongly reducing emission probabilities. BosonSampling with only single-photon input has thus never been realised. Here, we report on a BosonSampling device operated with a bright solid-state source of single-photon Fock states with high photon-number purity: t…
Heralded single photons are prepared at a rate of ~100 kHz via conditional measurements on polarization-nondegenerate biphotons produced in a periodically poled KTP crystal. The single-photon Fock state is characterized using high frequency pulsed optical homodyne tomography with a fidelity of (57.6 +- 0.1)%. The state preparation and detection rates allowed us to perform on-the-fly alignment of the apparatus based on real-time analysis of the quadrature measurement statistics.
We propose a setup for a heralded, i.e. announced generation of a pure single-photon state given two imperfect sources whose outputs are represented by mixtures of the single-photon Fock state $\ket{1}$ with the vacuum $\ket{0}$. Our purification scheme uses beam splitters, photodetection and a two-photon-absorbing medium. The admixture of the vacuum is fully eliminated. We discuss two potential realizations of the scheme.
We analyze theoretically how to use the radiation pressure coupling between a mechanical oscillator and an optical cavity field to generate in a heralded way a single quantum of mechanical motion (a Fock state), and release on-demand the stored excitation as a single photon. Starting with the oscillator close to its ground state, a laser pumping the upper motional sideband leads to dynamical backaction amplification and to the creation of correlated photon-phonon pairs. The detection of one Stokes photon thus projects the macroscopic oscillator into a single-phonon Fock state. The non-classica…
We report the implementation of a high-rate source of single and two-photon states. By combining the advantages of short pulses and cavities, heralding rates up to 250kHz with 88% fidelity have been obtained for the single photons as well as 800Hz with 82% fidelity for the two-photon states. Furthermore, we developed a setup where the homodyne measurement is conditioned by the heralding of the quantum states, enabling the detection of most of the heralded events. This allows a faster characterization of the photon source leading to an increase in the fidelities up to 91% and 88% respectively f…
Realistic single-photon sources do not generate single photons with certainty. Instead they produce statistical mixtures of photons in Fock states $\ket{1}$ and vacuum (noise). We describe how to eliminate the noise in the output of the sources by means of another noisy source or a coherent state and cross phase modulation (XPM). We present a scheme which announces the production of pure single photons and thus eliminates the vacuum contribution. This is done by verifying a XPM related phase shift with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
Multiphoton heralding generates large-amplitude squeezed Schrödinger cat states and parity-selective Fock superpositions from squeezed vacuum via an OPA
We propose a robust scheme for generating macroscopic superposition states of spin or motion with the aid of a single photon. Shaping the wave packet of the photon enables high-fidelity preparation of non-classical states of matter even in the presence of photon loss. Success is heralded by photodetection, enabling the scheme to be implemented with a weak coherent field. We analyze applications to preparing Schrödinger cat states of a collective atomic spin or of a mechanical oscillator coupled to an optical resonator. The method generalizes to preparing arbitrary superpositions of coherent st…
Using a continuous-wave type-II optical parametric oscillator below threshold, we have demonstrated a novel source of heralded single-photons with high-fidelity. The generated state is characterized by homodyne detection and exhibits a 79% fidelity with a single-photon Fock state (91% after correction of detection loss). The low admixture of vacuum and the well-defined spatiotemporal mode are critical requirements for their subsequent use in quantum information processing.
Polarized light microscopy using path-entangled $N$-photon states (i.e., the N00N states) has been demonstrated to surpass the shot-noise limit at very low light illumination. However, the microscopy images suffer from divergence of phase sensitivity, which inevitably reduces the image quality. Here, we show that due to experimental imperfections, such a singularity also takes place in the microscopy that uses twin-Fock states of light for illumination. We propose two schemes to completely eliminate this singularity: (i) locking the phase shift sensed by the beams at the optimal working point,…
We consider conditional photonic non-Gaussian state preparation using multimode Gaussian states and photon-number-resolving detectors in the presence of photon loss. While simulation of such state preparation is often computationally challenging, we show that obtaining the required multimode Gaussian state Fock matrix elements can be reduced to the computation of matrix functions known as loop hafnians, and develop a tailored algorithm for their calculation that is faster than previously known methods. As an example of its utility, we use our algorithm to explore the loss parameter space for t…

Advancing quantum information, communication and sensing relies on the generation and control of quantum correlations in complementary degrees of freedom. Here, we demonstrate the preparation of electron-photon pair states using the phase-matched interaction of free electrons with the evanescent vacuum field of a photonic-chip-based optical microresonator. Spontaneous inelastic scattering produces intracavity photons coincident with energy-shifted electrons. Harnessing these pairs for correlation-enhanced imaging, we achieve a two-orders of magnitude contrast improvement in cavity-mode mapping…
The quantum world distinguishes itself from the classical world by being governed by probability amplitudes rather than probabilities. On a single-particle level, quantum phases can be manipulated leading to observable interference patterns that can be used as a probe e.g. in matter wave microscopy. But the quantum world bears even more fascinating effects when it comes to the interplay between more than one particle. Correlations between quantum particles such as entanglement can be exploited to speed up computational algorithms or enable secure cryptography. Here, we propose and numerically …
It is a long-standing goal to generate robust deterministic states of light with unique quantum properties, such as squeezing, sub-Poissonian statistics and entanglement. It is of interest to consider whether such quantum states of light could be generated by exploiting interactions with free electrons, going beyond their already ubiquitous use in generating classical light. This question is motivated by developments in electron microscopy, which present a new platform for manipulating photons through their interaction with quantum free electrons. Here, we explore the shaping of photon statist…
