Despite the apparent ubiquity and variety of quantum spin liquids in theory, experimental confirmation of spin liquids remains to be a huge challenge. Motivated by the recent surge of evidences for spin liquids in a series of candidate materials, we highlight the experimental schemes, involving the thermal Hall transport and spectrum measurements, that can result in smoking-gun signatures of spin liquids beyond the usual ones. For clarity, we investigate the square lattice spin liquids and theoretically predict the possible phenomena that may emerge in the corresponding spin liquids candidates. The mechanisms for these signatures can be traced back to either the intrinsic characters of spin liquids or the external field-driven behaviors. Our conclusion does not depend on the geometry of lattices and can broadly apply to other relevant spin liquids.
We develop two novel numerical schemes to study the conductance of the two-wire junction of inequivalent Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids. In the first scheme we use the static current-current correlation function across the junction to extract the linear conductance through a relation that is derived via the bosonization method. In the second scheme we apply a bias and evaluate the time-dependent current across the junction to obtain the current-voltage characteristic. The conductance is then extracted from the small bias result within the linear response regime. Both schemes are based on the infin…
We study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional hard-core bosonic model with nearest-neighbor interactions (XXZ model) where every site is coupled Ohmically to an independent but identical reservoir, hereby generalizing spin-boson models to interacting spin-boson systems. We show that a bath-induced Bose metal phase can occur in the ground state phase diagram away from half filling. This phase is compressible, gapless, and conducting but not superfluid. At haf-filling, only a Luttinger liquid and a charge density wave are found. The phase transition between them is of Kosterlitz-T…
Motivated by recent numerical discovery of a gapped spin liquid phase in spin-$1/2$ triangular-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model, we classify symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquids on triangular lattice in the Abrikosov-fermion representation. We find 20 phases with distinct spinon symmetry quantum numbers, 8 of which have their counterparts in the Schwinger-boson representation. Among them we identify 2 promising candidates (#1 and #20), which can realize a gapped $Z_2$ spin liquid with up to next nearest neighbor mean-field amplitudes. We analyze their neighboring magnetic orders and valence bond s…
We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin glass order, or valence-bond glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on …
We study the ground state properties, the electronic excitations and lattice dynamics in spin-liquid candidate TbInO$_3$. By employing polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy we define the inter- and intra-multiplet excitations, and establish the low-energy crystal-field (CF) level scheme. In particular, we demonstrate that the ground state of the Tb$^{3+}$ ions is a non-Kramers doublet, and relate the enhanced linewidth of the CF modes to the magnetic fluctuations near the spin-liquid ground state. We identify all 38 allowed Raman-active phonon modes at low temperature. Moreover, we observe …
Mechanism of superconductivity (SC) in a purely interacting electron system has been one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. In the BCS theory, the Landau's Fermi liquid is a normal state against which an SC instability occurs once an \emph{additional} pairing force is added. We show that in the doped Mott insulator an \emph{intrinsic} SC ground state (specifically a Luther-Emery state in a finite-doping two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder) can be directly turned into a Fermi-gas-like state by merely switching off the hidden statistical sign structure via two schemes. It points to a…
We investigate the disorder-driven phase transitions in bosonic fractional quantum Hall liquids at filling factors $f=1/2$ and $f=1$ in the lowest Landau level. We use the evolution of ground-state entanglement entropy, fidelity susceptibility, and Hall conductance with increasing disorder strength to identify the underlying phase transitions. The critical disorder strengths obtained from these different quantities are consistent with each other, validating the reliability of our numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization. At $f=1/2$, we observe a clear transition from the bosonic L…
Based on large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the dynamical spin structure factor of the Balents-Fisher-Girvin kagome lattice quantum spin-$1/2$ model, which is known to harbor an extended $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid phase. We use a correlation-matrix sampling scheme combined with a stochastic analytic continuation method to resolve the spectral functions of this anisotropic quantum spin model with a three-site unit-cell. Based on this approach, we monitor the spin dynamics throughout the phase diagram of this model, from the XY-ferromagnetic region to the $Z_2$ quantum spin l…
Recent experiments reveal that the honeycomb ruthenium trichloride α-RuCl3 is a prime candidate of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, there is no theoretical model which can properly describe its experimental dynamical response, due to the lack of a full understanding of its magnetic interactions. Here, we propose a general scheme to calculate the magnetic interactions in systems (e.g., α-RuCl3) with non-negligible orbital moments by constraining the directions of orbital moments. With this scheme, we put forward a minimal J1-K1-Γ1-J3-K3 model for α-RuCl3 and find that: (I) The thi…

We present the results for the low energy properties of the infinite dimensional t-J model with $J=0$, using $O(λ^2)$ equations of the extremely correlated Fermi liquid formalism. The parameter $λ\in [0,1]$ is analogous to the inverse spin parameter $1/(2S)$ in quantum magnets. The present analytical scheme allows us to approach the physically most interesting regime near the Mott insulating state $n\lesssim 1$. It overcomes the limitation to low densities $n \lesssim .7$ of earlier calculations, by employing a variant of the skeleton graph expansion, and a high frequency cutoff that is essent…
The pseudofermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) has been put forward as a semi-analytical scheme that, for a given microscopic spin model, allows to discriminate whether the low-temperature states exhibit magnetic ordering or a tendency towards the formation of quantum spin liquids. However, the precise nature of the putative spin liquid ground state has remained hard to infer from the original (single-site) pf-FRG scheme. Here we introduce a cluster pf-FRG approach, which allows for a more stringent connection between a microscopic spin model and its low-temperature spin liquid gr…
Motivated by recent experiments on the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α\text{-RuCl}_3$, we introduce time-domain probes of the edge and quasiparticle content of non-Abelian spin liquids. Our scheme exploits ancillary quantum spins that communicate via time-dependent tunneling of energy into and out of the spin liquid's chiral Majorana edge state. We show that the ancillary-spin dynamics reveals the edge-state velocity and, in suitable geometries, detects individual non-Abelian anyons and emergent fermions via a time-domain counterpart of quantum-Hall anyon interferometry. We anticipate applications …
We study thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid at low temperatures. Gravitational potentials are used as sources for finding the heat density and its correlation function. For a comprehensive study, we extend the renormalization group (RG) analysis developed for electric transport by including the gravitational potentials into the RG scheme. Our analysis reveals that the Wiedemann-Franz law remains valid even in the presence of quantum corrections caused by the interplay of diffusion modes and the electron electron interaction. In the present scheme this fundamental relation is clos…
Insulating $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids are a phase of matter with bulk anyonic quasiparticle excitations and ground state degeneracies on manifolds with non-trivial topology. In this paper, we construct a time-reversal symmetric $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid in two spatial dimensions using an array of quantum wires. We identify the anyons as kinks in the appropriate Luttinger-liquid description, compute their mutual statistics and construct local operators that transport these quasiparticles. We also present a construction of a fractionalized Fermi-liquid (FL*) by coupling the spin sector of the …
We revisit the Ising-nematic quantum critical point with an $m$-dimensional Fermi surface by applying a dimensional regularization scheme, introduced in Phys. Rev. B 92, 035141 (2015). We compute the contribution from two-loop and three-loop diagrams in the intermediate energy range controlled by a crossover scale. We find that for $m=2 $, the corrections continue to be one-loop exact for both the infrared and intermediate energy regimes.
We discuss the violation of spin-charge separation in generic nonlinear Luttinger liquids and investigate its effect on the relaxation and thermal transport of genuine spin-1/2 electron liquids in ballistic quantum wires. We identify basic scattering processes compatible with the symmetry of the problem and conservation laws that lead to the decay of plasmons into the spin modes. We derive a closed set of coupled kinetic equations for the spin-charge excitations and solve the problem of thermal conductance of interacting electrons for an arbitrary relation between the quantum wire length and s…
The family of "Kitaev materials" provides an ideal platform to study quantum spin liquids and their neighboring magnetic orders. Motivated by the possibility of a quantum spin liquid ground state in pressurized hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, we systematically classify and study symmetric quantum spin liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice, using the Abrikosov-fermion representation. Among the 176 symmetric $U(1)$ spin liquids (and 160 $Z_2$ spin liquids), we identify 8 "root" $U(1)$ spin liquids in proximity to the ground state of the solvable Kitave model on hyperhonecyomb lattices.…
A projective symmetry group (PSG) has been regarded as a classification theory of spin liquids. However, it does not include a symmetry-protected topological order of fermionic spinon excitations, and thus the classification of gapped spin liquids is incomplete. We demonstrate the classification beyond PSG by utilizing the Kitaev model on the squareoctagon lattice, where two gapped spin liquids are distinguished by a topological $Z_2$ invariant. This $Z_2$ invariant can be defined solely by the time-reversal and translation symmetries on condition that the time-reversal symmetry is implemented…
Fascinating new phases of matter can emerge from strong electron interactions in solids. In recent years, a new exotic class of many-body phases, described by generalized electromagnetism of symmetric rank-2 electric and magnetic fields and immobile charge excitations dubbed \textit{fractons}, has attracted wide attention. Besides having interesting properties in their own right, the models with generalized electromagnetism are also closely related to gapped fracton quantum orders, new phases of dipole-covering systems, as well as quantum information and quantum gravity. However, experimental …
