We use simulated strongly lensed gravitational wave events from the Einstein Telescope to demonstrate how the luminosity and angular diameter distances, $d_L(z)$ and $d_A(z)$ respectively, can be combined to test in a model independent manner for deviations from the cosmic distance duality relation and the standard cosmological model. In particular, we use two machine learning approaches, the Genetic Algorithms and Gaussian Processes, to reconstruct the mock data and we show that both approaches are capable of correctly recovering the underlying fiducial model and can provide percent-level constraints at intermediate redshifts when applied to future Einstein Telescope data.
We propose a new method to test the cosmic distance duality relation using the strongly lensed gravitational waves. The simultaneous observations of image positions, the relative time delay between different images, the redshift measurements of lens and source, together with the mass modelling of the lens galaxy, provide the angular diameter distance to the gravitational wave source. On the other hand, from the observation of gravitational wave signals the luminosity distance to the source can be obtained. This is to our knowledge the first method to simultaneously measure both the angular dia…
The cosmic distance relation (DDR) associates the angular diameters distance ($D_A$) and luminosity distance ($D_L$) by a simple formula, i.e., $D_L=(1+z)^2D_A$. The strongly lensed gravitational waves (GWs) provide a unique way to measure $D_A$ and $D_L$ simultaneously to the GW source, hence can be used as probes to test DDR. In this paper, we prospect the use of strongly lensed GW events from the future Einstein Telescope to test DDR. We write the possible deviation of DDR as $(1+z)^2D_A/D_L=η(z)$, and consider two different parametrizations of $η(z)$, namely, $η_1(z)=1+η_0 z$ and $η_2(z)=1…
We investigate the possibility to have a constraint on the mass of thermal warm dark matter (WDM) particle from the expected data of the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) survey if all the dark matter is warm. For this purpose we consider the lensing effect of large scale structure based on the warm dark matter scenario on the apparent magnitude of SNe Ia. We use HALOFIT as non-linear matter power spectrum and the variance of PDF. We preform a Fisher matrix analysis and obtain the lower bound of $m_{\rm WDM}>0.167$keV.

The observation of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae enables both the luminosity and angular diameter distance to a source to be measured simultaneously using a single observation. This feature can be used to measure the distance duality parameter $η(z)$ without relying on multiple datasets and cosmological assumptions to reconstruct the relation between angular and luminosity distances. In this paper, we show how this can be achieved by future observations of strongly lensed Type Ia systems. Using simulated datasets, we reconstruct the function $η(z)$ using both parametric and non-parametric…
As a completely independent method, the measurement of time delay of strongly lensed quasars (TDSL) are crucial to resolve the Hubble tension. Extensive monitoring is required but so far limited to a small sample of strongly lensed quasars. Together with several partner institutes, Beijing Normal University is constructing a 1.93m reflector telescope at the Muztagh-Ata site in west China, which has the world class observing conditions. The telescope will be equipped with both a three-channel imager/photometer which covers $3500-11000$ Angstrom wavelength band, and a low-medium resolution ($λ/δ…
One of the fundamental hypotheses in observational cosmology is the validity of the so-called cosmic distance-duality relation (CDDR). In this paper, we perform Monte Carlo simulations based on the method developed in Holanda, Goncalves & Alcaniz (2012) [JCAP 1206 (2012) 022] to answer the following question: what is the number of galaxy clusters observations N_{crit} needed to check the validity of this relation at a given confidence level? At 2σ, we find that N_{crit} should be increased at least by a factor of 5 relative to the current sample size if we assume the current observational unce…
[Abridged] Recent results from the BICEP, Keck Array and Planck Collaborations demonstrate that Galactic foregrounds are an unavoidable obstacle in the search for evidence of inflationary gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. Beyond the foregrounds, the effect of lensing by intervening large-scale structure further obscures all but the strongest inflationary signals permitted by current data. With a plethora of ongoing and upcoming experiments aiming to measure these signatures, careful and self-consistent consideration of experiments' foreground- and lensi…

One of the primary mission objectives for the Roman Space Telescope is to investigate the nature of dark energy with a variety of methods. Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) will be one of the principal anchors of the Roman cosmology program, through traditional luminosity distance measurements. This SNIa cosmology program can provide another valuable cosmological probe, without altering the mission strategy: time delay cosmography with gravitationally lensed SN. In this work, we forecast lensed SN cosmology constraints with the Roman Space Telescope, while providing useful tools for fu…
Supernovae that are strongly gravitationally lensed (gLSNe) by galaxies are powerful probes of astrophysics and cosmology that will be discovered systematically by next-generation wide-field, high-cadence imaging surveys such as the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). Here we use pixel-level simulations that include dust, observing strategy, and multiple supernova subtypes to forecast the rates and properties of gLSNe that ZTF and LSST will find. Applying the resolution-insensitive discovery strategy of Goldstein et al. (2018), we forecast that ZTF (…

The possibility of variation of the fundamental constants of nature has been a long-standing question, with important consequences for fundamental physics and cosmology. In particular, it has been shown that variations in the fine-structure constant, $α$, are directly related to violation of the distance duality relation (DDR), which holds true as long as photons travel on unique null geodesics and their number is conserved. In this paper we use the currently available measurements of ${Δα}/α$ to impose the most stringent constraints on departures of the DDR to date, here quantified by the par…

The current gravitational-wave localization methods rely mainly on sources with electromagnetic counterparts. Unfortunately, a binary black hole does not emit light. Due to this, it is generally not possible to localize these objects precisely. However, strongly lensed gravitational waves, which are forecasted in this decade, could allow us to localize the binary by locating its lensed host galaxy. Identifying the correct host galaxy is challenging because there are hundreds to thousands of other lensed galaxies within the sky area spanned by the gravitational-wave observation. However, we can…

The dominant uncertainty in the current measurement of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) with strong gravitational lensing time delays is attributed to uncertainties in the mass profiles of the main deflector galaxies. Strongly lensed supernovae (glSNe) can provide, in addition to measurable time delays, lensing magnification constraints when knowledge about the unlensed apparent brightness of the explosion is imposed. We present a hierarchical Bayesian framework to combine a dataset of SNe that are not strongly lensed and a dataset of strongly lensed SNe with measured time delays. We jointly constr…

Probing the relative speeds of gravitational waves and light acts as an important test of General Relativity and alternative theories of gravity. Measuring the arrival time of gravitational waves and electromagnetic counterparts can be used to measure the relative speeds, but only if the intrinsic time-lag between emission of the photons and gravitational waves is well understood. Here we suggest a method that does not make such an assumption, using future strongly lensed GW events and EM counterparts; Biesiada et al forecast that 50-100 strongly lensed GW events will be observed each year wit…
Time delays between the multiple images of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae (gl\sneia) have the potential to deliver precise cosmological constraints, but the effects of microlensing on the measurement have not been studied in detail. Here we quantify the effect of microlensing on the gl\snia\ yield of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the effect of microlensing on the precision and accuracy of time delays that can be extracted from LSST gl\sneia. Microlensing has a negligible effect on the LSST gl\snia\ yield, but it can be increased by a factor of $\sim$2 to 930 systems using …

LSST's wide-field of view and sensitivity will revolutionize studies of the transient sky by finding extraordinary numbers of new transients every night. The recent discovery of a kilonova counterpart to LIGO/Virgo's first detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from a double neutron star (NS-NS) merger also creates an exciting opportunity for LSST to offer a Target of Opportunity (ToO) mode of observing. We have been exploring the possibility of detecting strongly lensed GWs, that would enable new tests of GR, extend multi-messenger astronomy out to $z\gtrsim1$, and deliver a new class of sub-…

In metric theories of gravity with photon number conservation, the luminosity and angular diameter distances are related via the Etherington relation, also known as the distance-duality relation (DDR). A violation of this relation would rule out the standard cosmological paradigm and point at the presence of new physics. We quantify the ability of Euclid, in combination with contemporary surveys, to improve the current constraints on deviations from the DDR in the redshift range $0<z<1.6$. We start by an analysis of the latest available data, improving previously reported constraints by a fact…
This paper proposes a systematic study of cosmological signatures of modifications of gravity via the presence of a scalar field with a multiplicative coupling to the electromagnetic Lagrangian. We show that, in this framework, variations of the fine structure constant, violations of the distance duality relation, evolution of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and CMB distortions are intimately and unequivocally linked. This enables one to put very stringent constraints on possible violations of the distance duality relation, on the evolution of the CMB temperature and on admis…
The gravitational lens SDSS J1148+1930, also known as the Cosmic Horseshoe, is one of the biggest and of the most detailed Einstein rings ever observed. We use the forward reconstruction method implemented in the lens fitting code Lensed to investigate with great detail the properties of the lens and of the background source. We model the lens with different mass distributions, focusing in particular on the determination of the slope of the dark matter component. The inherent degeneracy between the lens slope and the source size can be broken when we can isolate separate components of each len…
We use gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens, in addition to Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) mock data, to forecast constraints on the electromagnetic and gravitational distance duality relations (DDR). We make use of a parameterised approach based on a specific DDR violation model, along with a machine learning reconstruction method based on the Genetic Algorithms. We find that GW provide an alternative to the use of BAO data to constrain violations of the DDR, reaching $3\%$ constraints on the violation parameter we consider when combined with SNIa, which is…

This paper aims to quantify how the lowest halo mass that can be detected with galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing depends on the quality of the observations and the characteristics of the observed lens systems. Using simulated data, we measure the lowest detectable NFW mass at each location of the lens plane, in the form of detailed \emph{sensitivity maps}. In summary, we find that: (i) the lowest detectable mass $M_{\rm low}$ decreases linearly as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increases and the sensitive area is larger when we decrease the noise; (ii) a moderate increase in angular …
We present a simulation analysis of weak gravitational lensing flexion and shear measurement using shapelet decomposition, and identify differences between flexion and shear measurement noise in deep survey data. Taking models of galaxies from the Hubble Space Telescope Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) and applying a correction for the HUDF point spread function we generate lensed simulations of deep, optical imaging data from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), with realistic galaxy morphologies. We find that flexion and shear estimates differ in our measurement pipeline: whereas intrinsic gal…
GW number count can be used as a novel tracer of the large scale structure (LSS) in the luminosity distance space (LDS), just like galaxies in the redshift space. It is possible to obtain the $D_L-D_A$ duality relation with clustering effect. However, several LSS induced errors will contaminate the GW luminosity distance measurement, such as the peculiar velocity dispersion error of the host galaxy as well as the foreground lensing magnification. The distance uncertainties induced from these effects will degrade the GW clustering from a spectroscopic-like data down to a photometric-like data. …
