We study ionization of atoms in strong two-dimensional (2D) laser fields with various forms, numerically and analytically. We focus on the local most-probable tunneling routes (some specific electron trajectories) which are corresponding to the local maxima of photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs). By making classic-quantum correspondence, we obtain a condition for these routes characterized by the electron position at the tunnel exit. With comparing the identified routes with the classical limit and the partial-decoupling approximation where it is assumed that tunneling is dominated by the main component of the 2D field, some semiclassical properties of 2D tunneling are addressed. The local maxima of PMD related to the local most-probable routes can be used as one of the preferred observables in ultrafast measurements.
Nonlinear relativistic ionization phenomena induced by a strong laser radiation with elliptically polarization are considered. The starting point is the classical relativistic action for a free electron moving in the electromagnetic field created by a strong laser beam. The application of the relativistic action to the classical barrier-suppression ionization is briefly discussed. Further the relativistic version of the Landau-Dykhne formula is employed to consider the semiclassical sub-barrier ionization. Simple analytical expressions have been found for: (i) the rates of the strong-field non…
We investigate the photoelectron angular emission distributions obtained by strong field dissociative ionization of H$_2$ using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. In case of employing laser light with an ellipticity close to 0.9 and an intensity of 1.0 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ W/cm$^2$, we find that the most probable release-time of the electron does not generally coincide with the time when the laser field maximizes. The release-time is affected by the molecular orientation. In addition, we observe that the width of the release-time distribution depends on molecular orientation. We attri…
We present experimental data on the non-adiabatic strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen using elliptically polarized femtosecond laser pulses at a central wavelength of 390 nm. Our measured results are in very good agreement with a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). Experiment and TDSE show four above-threshold ionization (ATI) peaks in the electron's energy spectrum. The most probable emission angle (also known as 'attoclock-offset angle' or 'streaking angle') is found to increase with energy, a trend that is opposite to standard predictions based on Co…
The Salecker-Wigner-Peres quantum-clock approach is applied in order to determine the tunneling time of an electron in strong-field tunnel ionization via a time-dependent electric field. Our results show that the ionization of the electron takes a nonvanishing period of time. This tunneling time is of the order of the Keldysh time but strictly larger than the Keldysh time. Comparing the quantum-clock tunneling time to the mean tunneling time as obtained by the virtual-detector approach, one finds that these two complementary methods give very similar results. Due to the asymmetric distribution…
This is a Reply on the proceeding comment on our paper titled "Classical Simulations Including Electron Correlations for Sequential Double Ionization".
With a classical ensemble model that including electron correlations during the whole ionization process, we investigated strong-field sequential double ionization of Ar by elliptically polarized pulses at the quantitative level. The experimentally observed intensity-dependent three-band or four-band structures in the ion momentum distributions are well reproduced with this classical model. More importantly, the experimentally measured ionization time of the second electrons [A. N. Pfeiffer et al., Nature Phys. 7, 428 (2011)], which can not be predicted by the standard independent-electron mod…
Important information about strong-field atomic or molecular ionization can be missed when using linearly polarized laser fields. The field strength at which an electron was ionized, or the time during a pulse of the ionization event are examples of such missing information. In treating single, double, and triple ionization events we show that information of this kind is made readily available by use of elliptical polarization.
In this paper, a quasistatic model is extended to describe the double ionization of Helium in intense linearly polarized field, yielding achieve an insight to the two-electron correlation effect in the ionization dynamics. Our numerical calculations reproduce the excessive double ionization and the photoelectron spectra observed experimentally both quantitatively and qualitatively. Moreover, it is shown that the classical collisional trajectories are the main source of the double ionization in the knee regime and responsible for the unusual angular distribution of the photoelectrons.
We present a mixed quantum-classical approach to strong-field ionization - a semiclassical two-step model with quantum input. In this model the initial conditions for classical trajectories that simulate electron wave packet after ionization are determined by the exact quantum dynamics. As a result, the model allows to overcome deficiencies of standard semiclassical approaches in describing the ionization step. The comparison with the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation shows that for ionization of a one-dimensional atom the model yields quantitative agreement w…
A classical approximation to time dependent quantum mechanical scattering in the Møller formalism is presented. Numerically, our approach is similar to a standard Classical-Trajectory-Monte-Carlo calculation. Conceptually, however, our formulation allows one to release the restriction to stationary initial distributions. This is achieved by a classical forward-backward propagation technique. As a first application and for comparison with experiment we present fully differential cross sections for electron impact ionization of atomic hydrogen in the Erhardt geometry.
In a fully classical simulation, we investigate the recollision mechanism of non-sequential double ionization (NSDI) and its manifestation in the end-of-pulse electron momentum distributions. We compare two different electron-electron potentials: a soft-core Coulombic potential and a Yukawa potential. We also implement the strong-field approximation (SFA), which is commonly made in quantum-mechanical $S$-matrix calculations, in our classical simulations and study its consequences. We find that, regardless of the form of the e-e potential, the SFA modifies the momentum distributions and recolli…
In this paper we present Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) calculations for single and multiple electron ionization of Argon atoms and ions in the threshold region. We are able to recover the Wannier exponents a for the power-law behavior of the cross section s versus excess energy: the exact value of the exponent as well as the existence of its saturation for multiple ionization appear to be related to how the total binding energy is shared between target electrons.
With a recently proposed quasiclassical ansatz [Geyer and Rost, J. Phys. B 35 (2002) 1479] it is possible to perform classical trajectory ionization calculations on many electron targets. The autoionization of the target is prevented by a Møller type backward--forward propagation scheme and allows to consider all interactions between all particles without additional stabilization. The application of the quasiclassical ansatz for helium targets is explained and total and partially differential cross sections for electron impact double ionization are calculated. In the high energy regime the cla…
The influence of electron-electron Coulomb repulsion on nonsequential double ionization of rare-gas atoms is investigated. Several variants of the quantum-mechanical transition amplitude are evaluated that differ by the form of the inelastic electron-ion rescattering and whether or not Coulomb repulsion between the two electrons in the final state is included. For high laser intensity, an entirely classical model is formulated that simulates the rescattering scenario.
Owing to its numerical simplicity, a two-dimensional two-electron model atom, with each electron moving in one direction, is an ideal system to study non-perturbatively a fully correlated atom exposed to a laser field. Frequently made assumptions, such as the ``single active electron''- approach and calculational approximations, e.g. time dependent density functional theory or (semi-) classical techniques, can be tested. In this paper we examine the multiphoton short pulse-regime. We observe ``non-sequential'' ionization, i.e.\ double ionization at lower field strengths as expected from a sequ…
Building on insights about the classical pathways to double ionization in strong laser fields we here propose a 1+1-dimensional model that captures essentials of the 3-d potential landscape and allows efficient studies of the process in reduced dimensions. The reduction to one degree of freedom for each electron is obtained by confining their motion to lines at an angle of pi/6 with respect to the field axis; the justification for this choice is that upon variation of the electric field the Stark saddles move along the same lines. In this way we obtain a low-dimensional representation in which…
A quasi classical approximation to quantum mechanical scattering in the Moeller formalism is developed. While keeping the numerical advantage of a standard Classical--Trajectory--Monte--Carlo calculation, our approach is no longer restricted to use stationary initial distributions. This allows one to improve the results by using better suited initial phase space distributions than the microcanonical one and to gain insight into the collision mechanism by studying the influence of different initial distributions on the cross section. A comprehensive account of results for single, double and tri…
We investigate the possible reasons for the discrepancy between the theoretical two-photon ionization cross section, $\sim 10^{-56}$ $\text{cm}^4 \text{s}$, of Ne$^{8+}$ obtained within the perturbative nonrelativistic framework for monochromatic light [J. Phys. B {\bf 34}, 4857 (2001)] and the experimental value, $7 \times 10^{-54}$ $\text{cm}^4 \text{s}$, reported in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 083002 (2011)] at a photon energy of 1110 eV. To this end, we consider Ne$^{8+}$ exposed to deterministic and chaotic ensembles of intense x-ray pulses. The time-dependent configuration-interaction s…
The three-body dynamics of the ionization of the atomic hydrogen by 30 keV antiproton impact has been investigated by calculation of fully differential cross sections (FDCS) using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. The results of the calculations are compared with the predictions of quantum mechanical descriptions: The semi-classical time-dependent close-coupling theory, the fully quantal, time-independent close-coupling theory, and the continuum-distorted-wave-eikonal-initial-state model. In the analysis particular emphasis was put on the role of the nucleus-nucleus (NN) inte…
We report full-dimensionality quantum and classical calculations for double ionization of laser-driven helium at 390 nm. Good qualitative agreement is observed. We show that the classical double ionization trajectories can be divided into two distinct pathways: direct and delayed. The direct pathway, with an almost simultaneous ejection of both electrons, emerges from small laser intensities. With increasing intensity its relative importance, compared to the delayed ionization pathway, increases until it becomes the predominant pathway for total electron escape energy below around 5.25 $U_{p}$…
We study the field-ionization threshold behavior when a Rydberg atom is ionized by a short single-cycle pulse field. Both hydrogen and sodium atoms are considered. The required threshold field amplitude is found to scale \emph{inversely} with the binding energy when the pulse duration becomes shorter than the classical Rydberg period, and, thus, more weakly bound electrons require larger fields for ionization. This threshold scaling behavior is confirmed by both 3D classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations and numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. More surprisingly, t…
We address nonsequential double ionization induced by strong, linearly polarized laser fields of only a few cycles, considering a physical mechanism in which the second electron is dislodged by the inelastic collision of the first electron with its parent ion. The problem is treated classically, using an ensemble model, and quantum-mechanically, within the strong-field and uniform saddle-point approximations. In the latter case, the results are interpreted in terms of "quantum orbits", which can be related to the trajectories of a classical electron in an electric field. We obtain highly asymm…
Experiments have shown that the microwave ionization probability of a highly excited almost monodimensional hydrogen atom subjected to a microwave pulse sometimes grows in steps when the peak electric field of the pulse is increased. Classical pulsed simulations display the same steps, which have been traced to phase-space metamorphoses. Quantum numerical calculations again exhibit the same ionization steps. I show that the time-sequence of two level interactions, responsible for the observed steps in the quantum picture, is strictly related to the classical phase space structures generated by…
We consider the final stage of multiple ionization of atoms in a strong linearly polarized laser field within a classical model. We propose that non-sequential multiple ionization is dominated by symmetric escape from a highly excited intermediate complex. For a configuration of N electrons with C_Nv symmetry in a plane perpendicular to the electric field we analyze the classical motion in phase space and discuss the final momentum distribution parallel and perpendicular to the polarization axis. The results are in good agreement with recent experiment of multiple ionization in Ne.
We consider electron impact-driven single and double ionization of magnesium in the 10-100 eV energy range. Our classical Hamiltonian model of these (e, 2e) and (e, 3e) processes sheds light on their total cross sections and reveals the underlying ionization mechanisms. Two pathways are at play in single ionization: Delayed and direct. In contrast, only the direct process is observed in double ionization, ruling out the excitation-autoionization channel. We also provide evidence that the so-called TS2 (Two-Step 2) mechanism predominates over the TS1 (Two-Step 1) mechanism, in agreement with ex…
We use classical electron ensembles and the aligned-electron approximation to examine the effect of laser pulse duration on the dynamics of strong-field double ionization. We cover the range of intensities $10^{14}-10^{16} W/cm^2$ for the laser wavelength 780 nm. The classical scenario suggests that the highest rate of recollision occurs early in the pulse and promotes double ionization production in few-cycle pulses. In addition, the purely classical ensemble calculation predicts an exponentially decreasing recollision rate with each subsequent half cycle. We confirm the exponential behavior …
Recently, in a strong Coulomb field regime of tunneling ionization an unexpected large enhancement of photoelectron spectra due to the Coulomb field of the atomic core has been identified by numerical solution of time-dependent Schrödinger equation [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{117}, 243003 (2016)] in the upper energy range of the tunnel-ionized direct electrons. We investigate the origin of the enhancement employing a classical theory with Monte Carlo simulations of trajectories, and a quantum theory of Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation based on the generalized eikonal approximation fo…
Stripping cross sections in nitrogen have been calculated using the classical trajectory approximation and the Born approximation of quantum mechanics for the outer shell electrons of 3.2GeV I$^{-}$ and Cs$^{+}$ ions. A large difference in cross section, up to a factor of six, calculated in quantum mechanics and classical mechanics, has been obtained. Because at such high velocities the Born approximation is well validated, the classical trajectory approach fails to correctly predict the stripping cross sections at high energies for electron orbitals with low ionization potential.
We present a theory illuminating the cross-over from strong-field tunnelling ionization to weak-field multiphoton ionization in the interaction of a classical laser field with a hydrogen atom. A simple formula is derived in which the ionization amplitude appears as a product of two separate amplitudes. The first describes the initial polarization of the atom by virtual multiphoton absorption and the second the subsequent tunnelling out of the polarized atom. Tunnelling directly from the ground state and multiphoton absorption without tunnelling appear naturally as the limits of the theory.
We take advantage of the information provided by use of elliptical polarization in a recent two-electron release time experiment [A.N. Pfeiffer et al., Nature Physics 7, 428 (2011)]. This allows a comparative test of the currently dominant conjectures regarding independent-electron tunneling theory vs. fully electron-correlated classical release theory to describe electron release in strong-field double ionization.
We analyze the formation of the low-energy structure (LES) in above-threshold ionization spectra first observed by Quan et al.\ \cite{quan09} and Blaga et al.\ \cite{blaga09} using both quasi-classical and quantum approaches. We show this structure to be largely classical in origin resulting from a two-dimensional focusing in the energy-angular momentum plane of the strong-field dynamics in the presence of the atomic potential. The peak at low energy is strongly correlated with high angular momenta of the photoelectrons. Quantum simulations confirm this scenario. Resulting parameter dependence…
We report the energy and angular distribution of ejected electrons from CH$_4$ and H$_{2}$O molecules impacted by 1 MeV H$^+$, He$^+$ and 650 keV N$^+$ ions. Spectra were measured at different observation angles, from 2 eV to 2000 eV. The obtained absolute double-differential-electron-emission cross sections (DDCS) were compared with the results of CTMC and CDW-EIS calculations. For the bare H+ projectile both theories show remarkable agreement with the experiment at all observed angles and energies. The CTMC results are in similarly good agreement with the DDCS spectra obtained for impact by …
We discuss the final stages of the simultaneous ionization of two or more electrons due to a strong laser pulse. An analysis of the classical dynamics suggests that the dominant pathway for non-sequential escape has the electrons escaping in a symmetric arrangement. Classical trajectory models within and near to this symmetry subspace support the theoretical considerations and give final momentum distributions in close agreement with experiments.
We theoretically study frustrated double ionization (FDI) of atoms subjected to intense circularly polarized laser pulses using a three-dimensional classical model. We find a novel "knee" structure of FDI probability as a function of intensity, which is similar to the intensity dependence of nonsequential double ionization probability. The observation of FDI is more favourable when using targets with low ionization potentials and short driving laser wavelengths. This is attributed to the crucial role of recollision therein, which can be experimentally inferred from the photoelectron momentum d…
Recent high resolution measurements of the momenta of two electrons emitted from Argon atoms in a strong laser field show a strong preference for the outgoing electrons to have similar momenta and to be ejected in the same direction along the field. We discuss the final stages of this process in a classical model in the spirit of Wanniers approach to double ionization after electron impact. Starting from an intermediate state of high but negative energy the field opens up a channel through which both electrons can escape. Near the threshold for this process Coulomb repulsion favors an escape w…
We present both full quantum mechanical and semiclassical calculations of above threshold ionization (ATI) of a hydrogen atom in the tunneling regime by a few-cycle linearly polarized infrared laser pulse. As a quantum treatment, we applied the direct integration of the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). In the semiclassical approximation (SCA), it is assumed that wavepacket propagation in the post-tunneling process can be well described within the classical framework. With these two methods, we analyze the similarities and deviations for ionization of the hydrogen atom. We found that…
The results of a theoretical investigation of prompt many-body ionization are reported. Our calculations address an experiment that reported ionization in Rydberg gases for densities two orders of magnitude less than expected from ionization between pairs of atoms. The authors argued that the results were due to the simultaneous interaction between many atoms. We performed classical calculations for many interacting Rydberg atoms with the ions fixed in space and have found that the many atom interaction does allow ionization at lower densities than estimates from two atom interactions. However…
We introduce a method to investigate the longitudinal momentum spread resulting from strong-field tunnel ionization of Helium which, unlike other methods, is valid for all ellipticities of laser pulse. Semiclassical models consisting of tunnel ionization followed by classical propagation in the combined ion and laser field reproduce the experimental results if an initial longitudinal spread at the tunnel exit is included. The values for this spread are found to be of the order of twice the transverse momentum spread.
Longitudinal momentum spectra and electron drift directions are considered for several laser wavelengths in Non-Sequential Double Ionization of helium using three dimensional classical ensembles. In this model, the familiar doublet for wavelength 800 nm and intensities of order 0.5 PW/cm^2, becomes a triplet for wavelength 1314 nm, then a doublet with plateau for 2017 nm. The results are explained based on whether the post-ionization impulse from the laser results in backward drift for one or both electrons.
We study double ionization of Mg by electron impact through the vantage point of classical mechanics. We consider all electron-electron correlations in a Coulomb four-body problem, where three electrons belong to the atom and the fourth electron causes the impact ionization. From our model we compute the double-ionization probability of Mg for impact energies from 15, to 125 eV. Double ionization occurs through eight double-ionization mechanisms, which we classify into four categories: inner shell capture, direct, delay and ionized inner shell mechanisms. We show that delay and ionized inner s…
We develop the two-electron attosecond streak camera under realistic conditions using a quasi-classical model. We assume extreme ultra-violet (XUV) attosecond pulses with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 24 attoseconds, centered at 120 eV and a streaking infrared laser field of 1600 nm, and intensity of $1.8 \times 10^{12}$ W/cm$^2$. The proposed method is shown to be capable to time resolve intra-atomic collisions in double ionization.
Tunnel ionization rates of triplet Rydberg states in helium with principal quantum numbers close to 37 have been measured in electric fields at the classical ionization threshold of $\sim197$ V/cm. The measurements were performed in the time domain by combining high-resolution continuous-wave laser photoexcitation and pulsed electric field ionization. The observed tunnel ionization rates range from $10^5$ s$^{-1}$ to $10^7$ s$^{-1}$ and have, together with the measured atomic energy-level structure in the corresponding electric fields, been compared to the results of calculations of the eigenv…
We investigate dissociative single and double ionization of HeH+ induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses. By employing a semi-classical model with nuclear trajectories moving on field-dressed surfaces and ionization events treated as stochastical jumps, we identify a strong-field mechanism wherein the molecules dynamically align along the laser polarization axis and stretch towards a critical internuclear distance before getting dissociative ionized. As the tunnel-ionization rate is greater for larger internuclear distance and for aligned samples, ionization is enhanced. The strong dynamic…

Based upon our previous works (Eur.Phys.J.D 6, 319(1999); Chin.Phys.Lett. 18, 236(2001)), we develop a classical approach to calculate the high-order harmonic generation of the laser driven atoms and molecules. The Coulomb singularities in the system have been removed by a regularization procedure. Action-angle variables have been used to generate the initial microcanonical distribution which satisfies the inversion symmetry of the system. The numerical simulation show, within a proper laser intensity, a harmonic plateau with only odd harmonics appears. At higher intensities, the spectra becom…
Using a semi-classical model, we investigate frustrated double ionization (FDI) in $\mathrm{D_3^+}$, a two-electron triatomic molecule, when driven by an intense, linearly polarized, near-infrared (800 nm) laser field. We compute the kinetic energy release of the nuclei and find a good agreement between experiment and our model. We explore the two pathways of FDI and show that, with increasing field strength, over-the-barrier ionization overtakes tunnel ionization as the underlying mechanism of FDI. Moreover, we compute the angular distribution of the ion fragments for FDI and identify a featu…
We formulate a three-dimensional semi-classical model to address triple and double ionization in three-electron atoms driven by intense infrared laser pulses. During time propagation, our model fully accounts for the Coulomb singularities, the magnetic field of the laser pulse and for the motion of the nucleus at the same time as for the motion of the three electrons. The framework we develop is general and can account for multi-electron ionization in strongly-driven atoms with more than three electrons. To avoid unphysical autoionization arising in classical models of three or more electrons,…
It is shown that the geometry of multi-electron threshold ionization in atoms depends on the initial configuration of bound electrons. The reason for this behavior is found in the stability properties of the classical fixed point of the equations of motion for multiple threshold fragmentation. Specifically for three-electron break-up, apart from the symmetric triangular configuration also a break-up of lower symmetry in the form of a T-shape can occur, as we demonstrate by calculating triple photoionization for the lithium ground and first excited states. We predict the electron break-up geome…
We formulate a three-dimensional semi-classical model to treat three-electron escape dynamics in a strongly-driven linear triatomic molecule, HeH$_{2}^{+}$. Our model includes the Coulomb singularities. Hence, to avoid unphysical autoionization, we employ two criteria to switch off the Coulomb repulsive force between two bound electrons and switch it on when the motion of one electron is mostly determined by the laser field. We investigate triple and "frustrated" triple ionization. In the latter process two electrons escape while one electron remains bound in a Rydberg state. We find that two …
We studied nonrelativistic collision of antiproton with hydrogen atom by solving time-dependent Schrodinger equation numerically. Coulomb wave function discrete variable method (CWDVR) had been used to calculate electron wave function evolution, while projectile defined classically, moving along the straight line trajectories with constant velocity. The ionization amplitude calculated by projection of the wave function into continuum wave function of the hydrogen electron. The fully differential cross sections calculated depending on projectile impact energy, scattering angle and electron ejec…
Using a semi-classical model, we study the formation of highly excited neutral fragments during the fragmentation of $\mathrm{H_3^+}$, a two-electron triatomic molecule, driven by an intense near-IR laser field. To do so, we first formulate a microcanonical distribution for arbitrary one-electron triatomic molecules. We then study frustrated double and single ionization in strongly-driven $\mathrm{H_3^+}$ and compute the kinetic energy release of the nuclei for these two processes. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of frustrated ionization on the strength of the laser field as well as on…
We continue our investigation concerning the question of whether atomic bound states begin to stabilize in the ultra-intense field limit. The pulses considered are essentially arbitrary, but we distinguish between three situations. First the total classical momentum transfer is non-vanishing, second not both the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement are vanishing together with the requirement that the potential has a finite number of bound states and third both the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement are vanishing. For the fir…
With the classical three-dimensional ensemble model, we have investigated the microscopic recollision dynamics in nonsequential double ionization of helium by 800 nm laser pulses at 2.0 PW/cm^2. We demonstrate that the asymmetric energy sharing between the two electrons at recollision plays a decisive role in forming the experimentally observed V-shaped structure in the correlated longitudinal electron momentum spectrum at the high laser intensity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 263003 (2007)]. This asymmetric energy sharing recollision leaves footprints on the transverse electron momentum spectra, whic…
We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of the magnetic component of an electromagnetic field on high-order above-threshold ionization of xenon atoms driven by ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses. The nondipole shift of the electron momentum distribution along the light-propagation direction for high energy electrons beyond the classical cutoff is found to be vastly different from that below the cutoff. A V-shape structure in the momentum dependence of the nondipole shift above the cutoff is identified for the first time. With the help of classical and quantum-orbit analy…
Quantum control of the pathway along which a Rydberg electron field ionizes is experimentally and computationally demonstrated. Selective field ionization is typically done with a slowly rising electric field pulse. The $(1/n^*)^4$ scaling of the classical ionization threshold leads to a rough mapping between arrival time of the electron signal and principal quantum number of the Rydberg electron. This is complicated by the many avoided level crossings that the electron must traverse on the way to ionization, which in general leads to broadening of the time-resolved field ionization signal. In…
