A two-dimensional, two-electron model atom in a laser pulse: exact treatment, single active electron-analysis, time-dependent density functional theory, classical calculations, and non-sequential ionization
Owing to its numerical simplicity, a two-dimensional two-electron model atom, with each electron moving in one direction, is an ideal system to study non-perturbatively a fully correlated atom exposed to a laser field. Frequently made assumptions, such as the ``single active electron''- approach and calculational approximations, e.g. time dependent density functional theory or (semi-) classical techniques, can be tested. In this paper we examine the multiphoton short pulse-regime. We observe ``non-sequential'' ionization, i.e.\ double ionization at lower field strengths as expected from a sequential, single active electron-point of view. Since we find non-sequential ionization also in purely classical simulations, we are able to clarify the mechanism behind this effect in terms of single particle trajectories. Non-adiabatic photo-ionization is difficult to control as it relies on the derivatives of the envelope and not on phase-details of the short ionizing pulse. Here, we introduce a catalyzing state, whose presence render non-adiabatic ionization sensitive to phase-details of tailored pulses. Since a catalyzing state is in general easy to create, this opens a perspective for coherent control of ultra-fast ionization.
Small Phase Space Structures and their Relevance to Pulsed Quantum Evolution: the Stepwise Ionization of the Excited Hydrogen Atom in a Microwave Pulse
We review the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization. The semiclassical two-step model describes quantum interference and accounts for the ionic potential beyond the semiclassical perturbation theory. We discuss formulation and implementation of this model, its further developments, as well as some of the applications. The reviewed applications of the model include strong-field holography with photoelectrons, multielectron polarization effects in ionization by an intense laser pulse, and strong-field ionization of the hydrogen molecule.
Ionization with ultrashort pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) regime can be used to prepare an ion in a superposition of spin--orbit substates. In this work, we study the coherence properties of such a superposition, created by ionizing xenon atoms using two phase-locked XUV pulses at different frequencies. In general, if the duration of the driving pulse exceeds the quantum beat period, dephasing will occur. If however, the frequency difference of the two pulses matches the spin--orbit splitting, the coherence can be efficiently increased and dephasing does not occur.
How fast can a laser pulse ionize an atom? We address this question by considering pulses that carry a fixed time-integrated energy per-area, and finding those that achieve the double requirement of maximizing the ionization that they induce, while having the shortest duration. We formulate this double-objective quantum optimal control problem by making use of the Pareto approach to multi-objetive optimization, and the differential evolution genetic algorithm. The goal is to find out how much a precise time-profiling of ultra-fast, large-bandwidth pulses may speed up the ionization process wit…
Double electron ionisation process occurs when an intense laser pulse interacts with atoms or molecules. Exact {\it ab initio} numerical simulation of such a situation is extremely computer resources demanding, thus often one is forced to apply reduced dimensionality models to get insight into the physics of the process. The performance of several algorithms for simulating double electron ionization by strong femtosecond laser pulses are studied. The obtained ionization yields and the momentum distributions of the released electrons are compared, and the effects of the model dimensionality on …
Multiphoton ionization of sodium by laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength and 57 fs duration is studied in the range of laser peak intensities belonging to over-the-barrier ionization regime. Photoelectron momentum distributions (PMD) and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al. [Phys. Rev. A 93, 063426 (2016)]. The contributions of photoelectrons with different values of the orbital quantum number in the PMD are determined by expanding the photoelectro…
A simple model for sequential multiphoton ionization by ultra-intense x-rays is presented. The derived scaling of the ion yield with pulse energy quantitatively reproduces the experimental data, which shows that the ion yield increases according to the "power law" behavior typical of multiphoton ionization, followed by saturation at high pulse energies. The calculated average time interval between ionizations for producing ions at a certain charge state is found to be proportional to the pulse duration and independent of all other x-ray pulse parameters. This agrees with previous studies where…
We consider atomic strong-field ionization in the long-pulse limit for linearly polarized infrared laser fields. We show how nondipole effects in the plane formed by the propagation and polarization directions lead to (i) a shift of the origin of the rings describing the energetically allowed final electron momenta for individual above-threshold ionization channels and (ii) a redistribution in the continuum population on each ring.
We investigate the strong-field ionization of atomic hydrogen in a few-cycle elliptically polarized infrared pulse by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The dependence of the photoelectron momentum distribution on the pulse intensity, ellipticity, length, envelope, and carrier envelope phase is analyzed. In particular, we explain the variation of the electron offset angle with asymptotic electron energy through the combined action of the field and the Coulomb potential, and demonstrate that low-ellipticity pulses make it possible to access the electron release time.
Exchange correlation plays an important role in double-ionization of complex atoms by ultrashort laser pulse. In this work, we investigate two-photon double inner-shell electron ionization of neon induced by an attosecond extreme ultraviolent pulse in the framework of the quantum master equation. Our simulations reveal a distinct non-sequential effect via broadened double peaks, as a result of energy sharing between the two ionized electrons. When dissipation is included to show the interplay of coherence and decoherence, the two-photon double-ionization scaling law breaks down. We further stu…
Classical simulations including electron correlations for sequential double ionization
The interaction of a short, few-cycle light pulse and an atom which is prepared initially in a superposition of two stationary states is shown to exhibit strong signatures of atomic coherence. For a given waveform of the laser pulse, appropriate quantum mechanical relative phase between the constituents of the initial superposition can increase the ionization probability by a factor of three. A similarly strong effect can be observed when the waveform of the ionizing pulse is changed. These results allow for intuitive explanations, which are in agreement with the numerical integration of the t…
We propose a new scenario to apply IR-pump-XUV-probe schemes to resolving strong field ionization induced and attosecond pulse driven electron-hole dynamics and coherence in real time. The coherent driving of both the infrared laser and the attoscond pulse correlates the dynamics of the core-hole and the valence-hole which leads to the otherwise forbidden absorption and emission of XUV photon. An analytical model is developed based on the strong-field approximation by taking into account of the essential multielectron configurations. The emission spectra from the core-valence transition and th…
We consider the ionization of neon induced by a femtosecond laser pulse composed of overlapping, linearly polarized bichromatic extreme ultraviolet and infrared fields. In particular, we study the effects of the infrared light on a two-pathway ionization scheme for which Ne 2s22p53s1P is used as intermediate state. Using time-dependent calculations, supported by a theoretical approach based on the strong-field approximation, we analyze the ionization probability and the photoelectron angular distributions associated with the different sidebands of the ionization spectrum. Complex oscillations …
We investigate the laser-assisted single XUV photon double ionization of ground state helium. By solving full six-dimensional time-dependent schr{ö}dinger equation, we study the correlation and angular distribution. The discussion in joint energy and angular distributions reveals the competition in odd and even parity double ionization processes in the presence of weak laser field. The emission angle between two photoelectrons can be adjusted by the laser parameters. We depicts how the laser field enhance and/or enable the back-to-back and side-by-side emission of double ionization.

Strong-field ionization with few-cycle, mid-infrared laser pulses induces a localized ionization followed by long-lasting charge migration in halogenated organic molecules
We present a theoretical study of the ionization dynamics of a hydrogen atom exposed to attosecond laser pulses in the extreme ultra violet region at very high intensities. The pulses are such that the electron is expected to reach relativistic velocities, thus necessitating a fully relativistic treatment. We solve the time dependent Dirac equation and compare its predictions with those of the corresponding non-relativistic Schr{ö}dinger equation. We find that as the electron is expected to reach about 20% of the speed of light, relativistic corrections introduces a finite yet small decrease i…
We report on non-sequential double ionization of Ar by a laser pulse consisting of two counter rotating circularly polarized fields (390 nm and 780 nm). The double ionization probability depends strongly on the relative intensity of the two fields and shows a "knee"-like structure as function of intensity. We conclude that double ionization is driven by a beam of nearly monoenergetic recolliding electrons, which can be controlled in intensity and energy by the field parameters. The electron momentum distributions show the recolliding electron as well as a second electron which escapes from an …
We examine correlated electron and doubly charged ion momentum spectra from strong field double ionization of Neon employing intense elliptically polarized laser pulses. An ellipticity-dependent asymmetry of correlated electron and ion momentum distributions has been observed. Using a 3D semiclassical model, we demonstrate that our observations reflect the sub-cycle dynamics of the recollision process. Our work reveals a general physical picture for recollision-impact double ionization with elliptical polarization, and demonstrates the possibility of ultrafast control of the recollision dynami…
Multiphoton ionization of sodium by femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength in the range of laser peak intensities entering over-the-barrier ionization domain is studied. Photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schroedinger equation for three values of the laser intensity from this domain. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al (Phys. Rev. A 2016 93 063426). A partial wave analysis of the spectral peaks related to Freeman resonances has shown that each peak is a …
We present a theoretical framework to describe state-resolved ionization dynamics of neon atoms driven by ultraintense x-ray free-electron-laser pulses. In general, x-ray multiphoton ionization dynamics of atoms have been described by time-dependent populations of the electronic configurations visited during the ionization dynamics, neglecting individual state-to-state transition rates and energies. Combining a state-resolved electronic-structure calculation, based on first-order many-body perturbation theory, with a Monte Carlo rate-equation method, enables us to study state-resolved dynamics…
Double ionization in intense laser fields can comprise electron correlations, which manifest in the non-independent emission of two electrons from an atom or molecule. However, experimental methods that directly access the electron emission times have been scarce. Here, we explore the application of an all-optical streaking technique to strong-field double ionization both theoretically and experimentally. We show that both sequential and non-sequential double ionization processes lead to streaking delays that are distinct from each other and single ionization. Moreover, coincidence detection o…
We have constructed deep neural networks, which can map fluctuating photo-electron spectra obtained from noisy pulses to spectra from noise-free pulses. The network is trained on spectra from noisy pulses in combination with random Hamilton matrices, representing systems which could exist but do not necessarily exist. In [Giri et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124,113201 (2020)] we performed a purification of fluctuating spectra, that is mapping them to those from Fourier-limited Gaussian pulses. Here, we investigate the performance of such neural-network-based maps for predicting spectra of double pul…
At intensities below-the-recollision threshold, we show that re-collision-induced excitation with one electron escaping fast after re-collision and the other electron escaping with a time delay via a Coulomb slingshot motion is one of the most important mechanisms of non-sequential double ionization, for strongly-driven He at 400 nm. Slingshot-NSDI is a general mechanism present for a wide range of low intensities and pulse durations. Anti-correlated two-electron escape is its striking hallmark. This mechanism offers an alternative explanation of anti-correlated two-electron escape obtained in…
We analyze the photoelectron angular distribution in two-pathway interference between non\-resonant one-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of neon. We consider a bichromatic femtosecond XUV pulse whose fundamental frequency is tuned near the $2p^5 3s$ atomic states of neon. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved and the results are employed to compute the angular distribution and the associated anisotropy parameters at the main photoelectron line. We also employ a time-dependent perturbative approach, which allows obtaining information on the process for a large range of puls…
