We present the first results obtained from an extensive study of eclipsing binary (EB) system candidates recently detected in the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) near-infrated (NIR) Survey. We analyze the VVV tile d040 in the southern part of the Galactic disc wherein the interstellar reddening is comparatively low, which makes it possible to detect hundreds of new eclipsing binary candidates. We present here the light curves and the determination of the geometric and physical parameters of the best candidates found in this "NIR window", including 37 contact, 50 detached and 13 semi-detached eclipsing binary systems. We infer that the studied systems have an average of the $K_s$ amplitudes of $0.8$ mag and a median period of 1.22 days where, in general, contact binaries have shorter periods. Using the "Physics Of Eclipsing Binaries" (PHOEBE) interactive interface, which is based on the Wilson and Devinney code, we find that the studied systems have low eccentricities. The studied EBs present mean values of about 5700 K and 4900 K for the $T_1$ and $T_2$ components, respectively. The mean mass-ratio ($q$) for the contact EB stars is $\sim$ 0.44. This new Galactic disc sample is a first approach to the massive study of NIR EB systems.
Most of our knowledge about the structure of the Milky Way has come from the study of variable stars. Among the variables, mimicking the periodic variation of pulsating stars, are the eclipsing binaries. These stars are important in astrophysics because they allow us to directly measure radii and masses of the components, as well as the distance to the system, thus being useful in studies of Galactic structure alongside pulsating RR Lyrae and Cepheids. Using the distinguishing features of their light curves, one can identify them using a semi-automated process. In this work, we present a strat…
With the advent of large-scale photometric surveys of the sky, modern science witnesses the dawn of big data astronomy, where automatic handling and discovery are paramount. In this context, classification tasks are among the key capabilities a data reduction pipeline must possess in order to compile reliable datasets, to accomplish data processing with an efficiency level impossible to achieve by means of detailed processing and human intervention. The VISTA Variables of the Vía Láctea Survey, in the southern part of the Galactic disc, comprises multi-epoch photometric data necessary for the …
We present the photometric analysis of three ultra-short period total eclipsing binaries in contact configuration, CRTS_J172718.0+431624, OGLE-BLG-ECL-000104, and OGLE-BLG-ECL-000012, mined from massive astronomical surveys. Using the available archival light curves (LCs) from Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV), Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) in different passbands and new multi-band photometric observations with the 2.3 m Aristarchos telescope at Helmos Observatory, their relative physical parameters were der…
This project is a massive near-infrared (NIR) search for variable stars in highly reddened and obscured open cluster (OC) fields projected on regions of the Galactic bulge and disk. The search is performed using photometric NIR data in the $J$-, $H$- and $K_s$- bands obtained from the Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) Survey. We performed in each cluster field a variability search using Stetson's variability statistics to select the variable candidates. Later, those candidates were subjected to a frequency analysis using the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and the Phase Dispersion Minimization …
The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV) is a near-IR ESO public survey devoted to study the Galactic bulge and southern inner disk covering 560 deg$^2$ on the sky. This multi-epoch and multi-wavelength survey has helped to discover the first brown dwarfs towards the Galactic center, one of the most crowded areas in the sky, and several low mass companions to known nearby stars. The multi-epoch information has allowed us to calculate precise parallaxes, and put some constraints on the long-term variability of these objects. We expect to discover above a hundred more brown dwarfs. The…
We characterize the population of blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the bulge-halo transition region of the Milky Way using the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey data. The selection of BHB stars is made using the globular cluster M22 as a reference standard, and constructing color-magnitude and color-color diagrams with specific cuts in the $ZYJHK_s$ near-infrared (IR) passbands. A total of 12,554 BHB stars were detected, in a region within $-10.0^{\circ} \leq \ell \leq 10.2^{\circ}$ and $-10.2^{\circ} \leq b \leq -8.0^{\circ}$. We provide accurate coordinates and n…
Context. The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is a variability survey of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk carried out from 2010 on ESO Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). VVV will eventually deliver a deep near-IR atlas with photometry and positions in five passbands (ZYJHK_S) and a catalogue of 1-10 million variable point sources - mostly unknown - which require classifications. Aims. The main goal of the VVV Templates Project, that we introduce in this work, is to develop and test the machine-learning algorithms for the…
We present the discovery of 816 high amplitude infrared variable stars ($ΔK_{\rm s} >$ 1 mag) in 119 deg$^2$ of the Galactic midplane covered by the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey. Almost all are new discoveries and about 50$\%$ are YSOs. This provides further evidence that YSOs are the commonest high amplitude infrared variable stars in the Galactic plane. In the 2010-2014 time series of likely YSOs we find that the amplitude of variability increases towards younger evolutionary classes (class I and flat-spectrum sources) except on short timescales ($<$25 days) where this tren…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a late-type giant star that exhibited a smooth, eclipse-like drop in flux to a depth of 97 per cent. Minimum flux occurred in April 2012 and the total event duration was a few hundred days. Light curves in V, I and K$_s$ from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea surveys show a remarkably achromatic event. During 17 years of observational coverage of this source only one such event was detected. The physical properties of the giant star itself appear somewhat unusual, which may ultimately provide a clue towar…
The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) has contributed with deep multi-epoch photometry of the Galactic bulge and the adjacent part of the disk over 526 square degrees. More than a hundred cluster candidates have been reported thanks to this survey. We present the fifth article in a series of papers focused on young and massive clusters discovered in the VVV survey. In this paper, we present the physical characterization of five clusters with a spectroscopically confirmed OB-type stellar population. To characterize the clusters, we used near-infrared photometry ($J$, $H,…
The VVV microlensing search has recently surveyed the region of the Galactic plane at b=0 within -10.00 < l < 10.44 deg. in the near-infrared (IR), discovering hundreds of microlensing events. In this paper we explore the microlensing events with background sources that might be located in the far disk of the Galaxy, beyond the bulge. We discuss the possible configurations for the microlensing lenses and sources located at different places within the Galactic plane. Then we search for these events using the local red clump centroids of the VVV near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. According to the…
VISTA variables in the Via Lactea is an ESO Public survey dedicated to scan the bulge and an adjacent portion of the Galactic disk in the fourth quadrant using the VISTA telescope and the near-infrared camera VIRCAM. One of the leading goals of the VVV survey is to contribute to the knowledge of the star cluster population of the Milky Way. To improve the census of the Galactic star clusters, we performed a systematic scan of the JHKs images of the Galactic plane section of the VVV survey. Our detection procedure is based on a combination of superficial density maps and visual inspection of pr…
We implement a search for exoplanets in campaigns zero through eight (C0-8) of the K2 extension of the Kepler spacecraft. We apply a modified version of the QATS planet search algorithm to K2 light curves produced by the EVEREST pipeline, carrying out the C0-8 search on $1.5 \times 10^5$ target stars with magnitudes in the range of Kp = 9-15. We detect 818 transiting planet candidates, of which 374 were undiscovered by prior searches, with {64,15,5,2,1} in {2,3,4,5,6}-planet multi-planet candidate systems, respectively. Of the new planets detected, 100 orbit M dwarfs, including one which is po…
Wide-field time-domain photometric sky surveys are now finding hundreds of eclipsing white dwarf plus M dwarf binaries, a population encompassing a wealth of information and potential insight into white dwarf and close binary astrophysics. Precise follow-up observations are essential in order to fully constrain these systems and capitalise on the power of this sample. We present the first results from our program of high-speed, multi-band photometric follow-up. We develop a method to measure temperatures, (model-dependent) masses, and radii for both components from the eclipse photometry alone…
We apply the ${\tt weirddetector}$, a nonparametric signal detection algorithm based on phase dispersion minimization, in a search for low duty-cycle periodic signals in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (${\it TESS}$) photometry. Our approach, in contrast to commonly used model-based approaches specifically for flagging transits, eclipsing binaries, or other similarly periodic events, makes minimal assumptions about the shape of a periodic signal, with the goal of finding "weird" signals of unexpected or arbitrary shape. In total, 248,301 ${\it TESS}$ sources from the first-year South…
The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) continuously monitors hundreds of thousands of eclipsing binaries in the field of galactic bulge and the Magellanic Clouds. These objects have been classified into main morphological sub-classes, such as contact, non-contact, ellipsoidal and cataclysmic variables, both by matching the light curves with predefined templates and visual inspections. Here we present the result of a machine learned automatic classification based on the morphology of light curves inspired by the classification of eclipsing binaries observed by the original Kepler m…
We present VIVACE, the VIrac VAriable Classification Ensemble, a catalogue of variable stars extracted from an automated classification pipeline for the Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) infrared survey of the Galactic bar/bulge and southern disc. Our procedure utilises a two-stage hierarchical classifier to first isolate likely variable sources using simple variability summary statistics and training sets of non-variable sources from the Gaia early third data release, and then classify candidate variables using more detailed light curve statistics and training labels primarily from OGLE…
We present the analysis results of an eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CV) V729 Sgr, based on our observations and AAVSO data. Some outburst parameters were determined such as outburst amplitude ($A_{n}$) and recurrence time ($T_{n}$), and then the relationship between $A_{n}$ and $T_{n}$ is discussed. A cursory examination for the long-term light curves reveals that there are small-amplitude outbursts and dips present, which is similar to the behaviors seen in some nova-like CVs (NLs). More detailed inspection suggests that the outbursts in V729 Sgr may be Type A (outside-in) with a rise time …
Numerous EWs were discovered by several deep photometric survey and there are about 40785 EW-type binary systems listed in the international variable star index (VSX) by March 13, 2017. 7938 of them were observed by LAMOST by November 30, 2016 and their spectral types were given. Stellar atmospheric parameters of 5363 EW-type binary stars were determined based on good spectroscopic observations. In the paper, those EWs were catalogued and their properties are analyzed. The distributions of the orbital period (P), the effect temperature (T), the gravitational acceleration (Log(g)), the metallic…

We present time-series observations of Population \rom{2} Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud at near-infrared ($JHK_s$) wavelengths. Our sample consists of 81 variables with accurate periods and optical ($VI$) magnitudes from the OGLE survey, covering various subtypes of pulsators (BL Herculis, W Virginis and RV Tauri). We generate light curve templates using high-quality $I$-band data in the LMC from OGLE and $K_s$-band data in the Galactic Bulge from VVV and use them to obtain robust mean magnitudes. We derive Period-Luminosity (P-L) relations in the near-infrared and Period-Wesenheit (P…
We present the discovery of 37 pulsars from $\sim$ 20 years old archival data of the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey using a new FFT-based search pipeline optimised for discovering narrow-duty cycle pulsars. When developing our pulsar search pipeline, we noticed that the signal-to-noise ratios of folded and optimised pulsars often exceeded that achieved in the spectral domain by a factor of two or greater, in particular for narrow duty cycle ones. Based on simulations, we verified that this is a feature of search codes that sum harmonics incoherently and found that many promising pulsar candida…
