In this paper, we exploit the metagrating paradigm to achieve coherent control of absorption and reflection in a two-port device. Employing graphene ribbon as a tunable element allows us to, for the first time, realize a reconfigurable metagrating that integrates diversified coherent functionalities into a single planar structure. It is illustrated that the suggested design can behave as a coherent perfect absorber at multiple operating incident angles offered by its period-reconfigurability. Besides, our proposed metagrating is also capable of highly-efficient dynamic beam steering based on the coherent interaction of light with light through finely adjusting its chemical potentials, and its compatibility is then investigated to realize linear all-optical logic gates. Moreover, we use the idea of graphene-based metagrating to put forward an extremely asymmetrical device which exhibits high retroreflection upon illumination from one side and a strong absorption under excitation from the opposite side, revealing a great enhancement in design and fabrication simplicity compared to the previous works. The EM response of our suggested device can also be switched from a strongly asymmetric to a symmetric behavior by merely modulating the chemical potentials of its graphene ribbons.
We present a highly efficient metagrating-assisted antenna (MGA) architecture with a simple integrated feed. Power from a localized line source is distributed throughout the arbitrarily large antenna aperture with the help of a passive and lossless electromagnetic metagrating (MG). With appropriately designed meta-wire loading, the omnidirectional source field can be efficiently transformed into directive radiation. To aid the design process, a 2-dimensional volume-surface integral equation framework which accurately predicts the radiation pattern of the MGA is developed. Through constrained o…
A thorough theoretical study of the optical properties of periodic Si nanosphere arrays is undertaken, placing particular emphasis on the synergy between electric and magnetic Mie resonances, which occur in high-refractive-index nanoparticles and can lead to a rich variety of phenomena ranging from perfect reflection to controlled diffraction. By means of systematic calculations using the layer-multiple-scattering method that we properly extended so as to describe periodic arrays with many scatterers per unit cell, in conjunction with finite-element simulations, we optimized surfaces of Si nan…
Metagrating is a new concept for wavefront manipulation that, unlike phase gradient metasurfaces, does not suffer from low efficiency and also has a less complicated fabrication process. In this paper, a compound metallic grating (a periodic structure with more than one slit in each period) is proposed for anomalous reflection. The electromagnetic response of this grating is analyzed by a proposed analytical method and then a closed-form and analytical expressions are presented for the reflection coefficients of the higher diffracted orders. The proposed method is verified by full-wave simulat…
We present a semianalytical method to obtain perfect transmission across abrupt H-plane bends in single-mode rectangular waveguides using a single passive polarizable element (scatterer). The underlying analysis and synthesis schemes are inspired by the rapidly-growing research on metagratings, typically used to manipulate wave trajectories in free-space. These sparse configurations of subwavelength polarizable particles (meta-atoms) are designed by careful tailoring of inter-element near-field and far-field interactions, relying on analytical models to resolve the required meta-atom distribut…
We present an analytical scheme for designing metagrating-enhanced sparse antenna arrays. Unlike previous work, the proposed method does not involve time-consuming cost function optimizations, complex structural manipulations on the active array or demanding computational capabilities. Instead, it merely requires the integration of a passive metagrating (MG) superstrate, a planar periodic arrangement of subwavelength capacitively-loaded wires (meta-atoms), synthesized conveniently via a semianalytical procedure to guarantee suppression of grating lobes in the sparse configuration. Correspondin…
We present the design, fabrication and experimental investigation of a printed circuit board (PCB) metagrating (MG) for perfect anomalous reflection. The design follows our previously developed analytical formalism, resulting in a single-element MG capable of unitary coupling of the incident wave to the specified (first order) Floquet-Bloch (FB) mode while suppressing the specular reflection. We characterize the MG performance experimentally using a bistatic scattering pattern measurement, relying on an original beam-power integration approach for accurate evaluation of the coupling to the var…
We theoretically formulate and experimentally demonstrate the design of metagratings (MGs) composed of periodic rectangular grooves in a metallic medium, intended for perfect anomalous reflection. Using mode matching, a semianalytical scheme for analysis and synthesis of such MGs, containing multiple, arbitrarily arranged, grooves per period, is derived. Following the typical MG design approach, we use this formalism to identify the relevant Floquet-Bloch (FB) modes and conveniently formulate constraints for suppression of spurious scattering, directly tying the structure's geometrical degrees…
Gradient metasurfaces have been extensively applied in recent years for enabling an unprecedented control of light beam over thin optical components. However, these metasurfaces suffer from low efficiency when it comes to bending light with large angle and high fabrication demand when it requires fine discretion. In this work, we investigate the all-dielectric metagrating based on mie-type resonances interference, allowing extraordinary optical diffraction for beam steering with ultralarge angle. It is found that the coupling inside and among lattice of metagrating can tune the exciting state …
Non-intrusive displacement measurement technique has a distinct edge over displacement sensors working in contact mode. Laser Doppler Vibrometry based schemes (LDV) offer such an advantage. However, the measurements are limited up to $λ/4$, where $λ$ is the wavelength of optical source. An experimental design of high resolution non-intrusive displacement sensor working on the principle of basic LDV is being presented here. Resolution enhancement has been achieved through phase multiplication using multiple reflections within a high-Q cavity created by a vibrating surface and a high reflection …
A single mode electromagnetic resonator coupled to a two-level hybrid-quantum-dot(hQD) is studied theoretically as a laser(maser), when the hQD is driven out of equilibrium with external applied d.c. bias voltage. Using the formalism of the non-equilibrium Green's functions for the hQD and the semi-classical laser equations, we determine the relevant physical quantities of the system. We find that due to the resonant Andreev reflections and the formation of the Floquet-Andreev side-resonances in the sub-gap region, at appropriate gate voltages and above a certain threshold bias voltage and dam…
We have used a plane-wave expansion method to theoretically study the far-field head-media optical interaction in HAMR. For the ASTC media stack specifically, we notice the outstanding sensitivity related to interlayer's optical thickness for media reflection and magnetic layer's light absorption. With 10-nm interlayer thickness change, the recording layer absorption can be changed by more than 25%. The 2-D results are found to correlate well with full 3-D model and magnetic recording tests on flyable disc with different interlayer thickness.
We investigate enhanced harmonic generation processes in gain-assisted, near-zero permittivity metamaterials composed of spherical plasmonic nanoshells. We report the presence of narrow-band features in transmission, reflection and absorption induced by the presence of an active material inside the core of the nanoshells. The damping-compensation mechanism used to achieve the near-zero effective permittivity condition also induces a significant increase in field localization and strength and, consequently, enhancement of linear absorption. When only metal nonlinearities are considered, second …
We study emission from quasi-one-dimensional modes of an asymmetric resonant cavity that are associated with a stable periodic ray orbit confined inside the cavity by total internal reflection. It is numerically demonstrated that such modes exhibit directional emission, which is explained by chaos-assisted emission induced by dynamical tunneling. Fabricating semiconductor microlasers with the asymmetric resonant cavity, we experimentally demonstrate the selective excitation of the quasi-one-dimensional modes by employing the device structure to preferentially inject currents to these modes and…
The way molecules absorb, transfer, and emit light can be modified by coupling them to optical cavities. The extent of the modification is often defined by the cavity-molecule coupling strength, which depends on the number of coupled molecules. We experimentally and numerically study the evolution of photoemission from a thin layered J-aggregated molecular material strongly coupled to a Fabry-Perot microcavity as a function of the number of coupled layers. We unveil an important difference between the strong coupling signatures obtained from reflection spectroscopy and from polariton assisted …
