Curvature-induced effects allow us to tailor the static and dynamic response of a magnetic system with a high degree of freedom. We study corrugated magnonic waveguides deposited on a sinusoidally modulated substrate prepared by focused electron beam deposition. The surface curvature in films with thicknesses comparable to the amplitude of modulation locally modifies the contributions of dipolar and exchange energies and results in an effective anisotropy term which can be tuned on-demand based on the exact geometry. We show, by Brillouin light scattering microscopy, that without the presence of an external magnetic field, spin waves propagate over a distance 10$\times$larger in the corrugated waveguide than in the planar waveguide. Further, we analyze the influence of the modulation amplitude on spin-wave propagation and conclude that for moderate modulation amplitudes, the spin-wave decay length is not affected. For larger amplitudes, the decay length decreases linearly with increasing modulation.
The planar Goubau line is a promising low-loss metal waveguide for terahertz interconnects. To enable advanced system architectures and multi-port measurements based on planar Goubau lines, there is a strong need for broadband impedance-matched loads, which can be used to absorb the energy and minimize standing waves in a system. In this work, we propose a matched load for planar Goubau lines based on an exponentially-tapered corrugated line, gradually increasing conductor losses while maintaining small reflections. The corrugation density is high enough to increase conductor losses without re…
We demonstrate a single-mode phononic waveguide that enables robust propagation of mechanical waves. The waveguide is a highly-stressed silicon nitride membrane that supports the propagation of out-of-plane modes. In direct analogy to rectangular microwave waveguides, there exists a band of frequencies over which only the fundamental mode is allowed to propagate, while multiple modes are supported at higher frequencies. We directly image the mode profiles using optical heterodyne vibration measurement, showing good agreement with theory. In the single-mode frequency band, we show low-loss prop…
The rigorous coupled wave approach (RCWA) was implemented to investigate optical absorption in a triple-p-i-n-junction amorphous-silicon solar cell with a 2D metallic periodically corrugated backreflector (PCBR). Both total and useful absorptances were computed against the free-space wavelength $λ_o$ for both s- and p-polarized polarization states. The useful absorptance in each of the three p-i-n junctions was also computed for normal as well as oblique incidence. Furthermore, two canonical boundary-value problems were solved for the prediction of guided-wave modes (GWMs): surface-plasmon-pol…
Metastable face-centered-cubic Fe78Ni22 thin films grown on Cu(001) substrates are excellent candidates for focused ion beam direct writing of magnonic structures due to their favorable magnetic properties after ion-beam-induced transformation. The focused ion beam transforms the originally nonmagnetic fcc phase into the ferromagnetic bcc phase with additional control over the direction of uniaxial magnetic in-plane anisotropy. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy in transformed areas is strong enough to stabilize the magnetization in transverse direction to the long axis of narrow waveguides. Th…
We study experimentally and by micromagnetic simulations the propagation of spin waves in 100-nm thick YIG waveguides, where the width linearly decreases from 2 to 0.5 micrometers over a transition region with varying length between 2.5 and 10 micrometers. We show that this geometry results in a down-conversion of the wavelength, enabling efficient generation of waves with wavelengths down to 350 nm. We also find that this geometry leads to a modification of the group velocity, allowing for almost-dispersionless propagation of spin-wave pulses. Moreover, we demonstrate that the influence of en…
We demonstrate fabrication of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) by optical patterning combined with chemo-mechanical polishing. The fabricated LNOI waveguides have a nearly symmetric mode profile of a mode field size of ~2.5 micron (full-width at half maximum). We develop a high-precision measurement approach by which the single mode waveguides are characterized to have a propagation loss of ~0.042 dB/cm.
Highly confining waveguides without degraded nonlinear coefficient and low propagation losses have been fabricated in lithium niobate by a new process that we called High Vacuum Vapor-phase Proton Exchange (HiVac-VPE). Index contrast, index profile, nonlinearity and crystallographic phases are carefully investigated. Original analysis of index profiles indicates that the waveguides contains sub-layers whose depths are depending on the exchange durations. Propagation behavior, propagation losses and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) response of HiVac-VPE channel waveguides are investigated at te…
With the advent of the post-Moore era, researches on beyond-Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) approaches have been attracted more and more attention. Magnonics, or spin wave is one of the most promising technology beyond CMOS, which magnons-quanta for spin waves-process the information analogous to electronic charges in electronics. Information transmission by spin waves, which uses the frequency, amplitude and (or) phase to encode information, has a great many of advantages such as extremely low energy loss and wide-band frequency. Moreover, using the nonlinear characteristics of…
We investigate TE-wave propagation in a hollow waveguide with a graded dielectric layer, described using a hyperbolic tangent function. General formulae for the electric field components of the TE-waves, applicable to hollow waveguides with arbitrary cross sectional shapes, are presented. We illustrate the exact analytical results for the electric field components in the special case of a rectangular waveguide. Furthermore, we derive exact analytical results for the reflection and transmission coefficients valid for waveguides of arbitrary cross sectional shapes. Finally, we show that the obta…
The characteristics of spin waves in ferromagnetic waveguides with nonuniform magnetization have been investigated for situations where the shape anisotropy field of the waveguide is comparable to the external bias field. Spin-wave generation was realized by the magnetoelastic effect by applying normal and shear strain components, as well as by the Oersted field emitted by an inductive antenna. The magnetoelastic excitation field has a nonuniform profile over the width of the waveguide because of the nonuniform magnetization orientation, whereas the Oersted field remains uniform. Using microma…
This paper reports the first demonstration of beta-phase gallium oxide as optical waveguides on sapphire substrates grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The propagation losses from visible to ultraviolet spectra were comprehensively studied. By optimizing the fabrication processes, minimum propagation loss was identified to be 3.7 dB/cm at the wavelength of 810 nm, which is comparable to other wide bandgap materials within the III-N family (GaN, AlN). To further reveal the underlying loss mechanisms, several physical mechanisms such as two-photon absorption, sidewall scatt…
Optoelectronic oscillators have dominated the scene of microwave oscillators in the last few years thanks to their great performances regarding frequency stability and phase noise. However, miniaturization of such a device is an up to date challenge. Recently, devices based on phonon-photon interaction gather a lot of interest thanks to their extreme compactness and working frequency directly in the GHz. In this frame, a still missing element to obtain long-term frequency stability performances is an on-chip delay within the feedback loop. Here, we experimentally show filtering and slow propag…
On-chip optical waveguides with low propagation losses and precisely engineered group velocity dispersion (GVD) are important to nonlinear photonic devices such as soliton microcombs. Yet, despite intensive research efforts, nonlinear integrated photonic platforms still feature propagation losses orders of magnitude higher than in standard optical fiber. The tight confinement and high index contrast of integrated waveguides make them highly susceptible to fabrication induced surface roughness. Therefore, microresonators with ultra-high Q factors are, to date, only attainable in polished bulk c…
We investigate the dependence of photonic waveguide propagation loss on the thickness of the buried oxide layer in Y-cut lithium niobate on insulator substrate to identify trade-offs between optical losses and electromechanical coupling of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices for acousto-optic applications. Simulations show that a thicker oxide layer reduces the waveguide loss but lowers the electromechanical coupling coefficient of the SAW device. Optical racetrack resonators with different lengths were fabricated by argon plasma etching to experimentally extract waveguide losses. By increasin…
Low propagation loss in high confinement waveguides is critical for chip-based nonlinear photonics applications. Sophisticated fabrication processes which yield sub-nm roughness are generally needed to reduce scattering points at the waveguide interfaces in order to achieve ultralow propagation loss. Here, we show ultralow propagation loss by shaping the mode using a highly multimode structure to reduce its overlap with the waveguide interfaces, thus relaxing the fabrication processing requirements. Microresonators with intrinsic quality factors (Q) of 31.8 $\pm$ 4.4 million are experimentally…
