We investigate a quantum vacuum state for $1 + 1$ dimensional de Sitter space, corresponding to a region within a perfectly reflecting symmetric box of fixed physical size. We find that a particle detector inside the box registers zero response, implying that the walls of the box screen out the thermal effects of the de Sitter horizon. The box thus creates a `quiescent oasis' with a temperature below the de Sitter horizon temperature, an unexpected feature that opens the way to an analysis of heat and entropy exchange between the box and the horizon in the context of the generalized second law of thermodynamics. We also calculate the stress-energy-momentum tensor of the region within the box, showing that the total energy in the box is less than the same volume of de Sitter space in the presence of thermal fluctuations.
In this paper, we attempt to further study the heat engine efficiency for the regular black hole (BH) with an anti-de Sitter (AdS) background where the working material is the Hayward-AdS (HAdS) BH. In the extended phase space, we investigate the heat engine efficiency of the HAdS BH by defining the cosmological constant as the thermodynamic pressure $P$ and deriving the mechanical work from the $PdV$ terms. Then, we obtain the relation between the efficiency and the entropy/pressure and plot these function figures. Meanwhile, we compare the relation between the HAdS BH with that of the Bardee…
The Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole solution, which has two event horizons, is considered to examine the relation between the quasi-localized energy complexes on ${\cal M}$ and the heat flows passing through its boundary $\partial {\cal M}$. Here ${\cal M}$ is the patch between cosmological event horizon and black hole event horizon of the SdS black hole solution. Conclusively, the relation, like the Legendre transformation, between the quasi-localized Einstein and Møller energy complex and the heat flows passing through the boundary is obeyed, and these two quasi-localized energy com…
We investigate the thermodynamical properties of black holes in (3+1) and (2+1) dimensional Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. In each case, the thermodynamic internal energy is computed for a finite spatial region that contains the black hole. The temperature at the boundary of this region is defined by differentiating the energy with respect to entropy, and is equal to the product of the surface gravity (divided by~$2π$) and the Tolman redshift factor for temperature in a stationary gravitational field. We also compute the thermodynamic surface pressure and, in the case …
Recent work has uncovered Schottky-like peaks in the temperature dependence of key specific heats of certain black hole thermodynamic systems. They signal a finite window of available energy states for the underlying microscopic degrees of freedom. This paper reports on new families of peaks, found for the Kerr and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in a spacetime with positive cosmological constant. It is known that a system with a highest energy, when coupled to two distinct heat baths, can naturally generate a thermodynamic instability, population inversion, a channel for work output. It is not…
We study quantum fields on spacetimes having a bifurcate Killing horizon by allowing the possibility that left- and right- (in-going and out-going) modes have different temperatures. We consider in particular the Rindler for both massless and massive fields, the static de Sitter and Schwarzschild black hole backgrounds for massive fields. We find that in all three cases, when any of the temperatures is different from the canonical one (Unruh, Hawking and Gibbons--Hawking, correspondingly) the correlation functions have extra singularities at the horizon.
For Anti-de Sitte (AdS) black holes, the isochoric heat capacity of system is vanished, while the isobaric heat capacity is not. However, this situation does not hold on for de Sitter (dS) black holes. In this work, by introducing the interaction between the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon of the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RNdS) spacetime with quintessence, we discuss the phase transition of this system. The results show that the spacetime not only has the similar phase transition behavior to that of Van der Waals (VdW) system, and the non-vanishing isochoric heat capacity f…

Entanglement entropy (EE) of a spatial region quantifies correlations between the region and its surroundings. For a free scalar in the adiabatic vacuum in de Sitter space the EE is known to remain low, scaling as the surface area of the region. Here, we study the evolution of entanglement after the universe transitions from de Sitter to flat space. We concentrate on the case of a massless minimally coupled scalar. We find numerically that, after the de Sitter stage ends, the EE and the Rényi entropy rapidly grow and saturate at values obeying the volume law. The final state of the subsystem (…
A thermodynamical description for the quasi-static collapse of radiating, self-gravitating spherical shells of matter in anti-de Sitter space-time is obtained. It is shown that the specific heat at constant area and other thermodynamical quantities may diverge before a black hole has eventually formed. This suggests the possibility of a phase transition occurring along the collapse process. The differences with respect to the asymptotically flat case are also highlighted.
We study the heat engine by a $d$-dimensional charged anti-de Sitter black hole by making a comparison between the small-large black hole phase transition and the liquid-vapour phase transition of water. With the help of the first law and equal-area law, we obtain an exact formula for the efficiency of a black hole engine modeled with a Rankine cycle with or without a back pressure mechanism. When the low temperature is fixed, both the heat and work decreases with the high temperature $T_{1}$. And the efficiency increases with $T_{1}$, while decreases with the charge $q$. For a Rankine cycle w…
We consider three dimensional gravity with a positive cosmological constant and non- zero gravitational Chern-Simons term. This theory has inflating de Sitter solutions and local metric degrees of freedom. The Euclidean signature partition function of the theory is evaluated including both perturbative and non-perturbative corrections. The perturbative one-loop correction is computed using heat kernel techniques. The non- perturbative corrections come from gravitational instantons with non-trivial topology which can be enumerated explicitly. We compute the sum over an infinite class of ge- ome…
The main objective of this paper is to study thermodynamics and stability of static electrically charged Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space in D=4. The Euclidean action for the grand canonical ensemble is computed with the appropriate boundary terms. The thermodynamical quantities such as the Gibbs free energy, entropy and specific heat of the black holes are derived from it. The global stability of black holes are studied in detail by studying the free energy for various potentials. For small values of the potential, we find that there is a Hawking-Page phase transition between a BIAdS blac…
In this note we compute the 1-loop partition function of spin-$s$ fields on Euclidean de Sitter space $S^{2n+1}$ using the quasinormal mode method. Instead of computing the quasinormal mode frequencies from scratch, we use the analytic continuation prescription $L_{\text{AdS}}\to iL_{\text{dS}}$, appearing in the dS/CFT correspondence, and Wick rotate the normal mode frequencies of fields on thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ into the quasinormal mode frequencies of fields on de Sitter space. We compare the quasinormal mode and heat kernel methods of calculating 1-loop determinants, finding exact agr…
We consider quantum Einstein gravity in three dimensional de Sitter space. The Euclidean path integral is formulated as a sum over geometries, including both perturbative loop corrections and non-perturbative instanton corrections coming from geometries with non-trivial topology. These non-trivial geometries have a natural physical interpretation. Conventional wisdom states that the sphere is the unique Euclidean continuation of de Sitter space. However, when considering physics only in the causal patch of a single observer other Euclidean geometries, in this case lens spaces, contribute to ph…
During a de Sitter stage of expansion the spectator fields of different spin are constrained by the critical density bound and by further requirements determined by their specific physical nature. The evolution of spectator electric fields in conformally flat background geometries is occasionally concocted by postulating the existence of ad hoc currents but this apparently innocuous trick violates the second law of thermodynamics. Such a problem occurs, in particular, for those configurations (customarily employed for the analysis of the Schwinger effect in four-dimensional de Sitter backgroun…
We study the thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RNdS) black hole in the view of global and effective thermodynamic quantities. Making use of the effective first law of thermodynamics, we can derive the effective thermodynamic quantities of de Sitter black holes. It is found that these effective thermodynamic quantities also satisfy Smarr-like formula. Especially, the effective temperatures are nonzero in the Nariai limit, which is consistent with the idea of Bousso and Hawking. By calculating heat capacity and Gibbs free energ…
We first study the thermodynamics of Bardeen-AdS black hole by the $T$-$r_{h}$ diagram, where T is the Hawking temperature and $r_{h}$ is the radius of event horizon. The cut-off radius which is the minimal radius of the thermodynamical stable Bardeen black hole can be got, and the cut-off radius is the same with the result of the heat capacity analysis. Moreover, by studying the parameter $g$, which is interpreted as a gravitationally collapsed magnetic monopole arising in a specific form of non-linear electrodynamics, in the Bardeen black hole, we can get a critical value $g_{m}$ and differe…
We discuss charged and static solutions in a shift-symmetric scalar-tensor gravity model including a negative cosmological constant. The solutions are only approximately Anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotically. While spherically symmetric black holes with scalar-tensor hair do exist in our model, the uncharged spherically symmetric scalar-tensor solitons constructed recently cannot be generalised to include charge. We point out that this is due to the divergence of the electric monopole at the origin of the coordinate system, while higher order multipoles are well-behaved. We also demonstrate that…
For the higher-dimensional dS spacetime embedded with black holes with non-linear charges, there are two horizons with different radiation temperatures. By introducing the interplay between two horizons this system can be regarded as an ordinary thermodynamic system in the thermodynamic equilibrium described by the thermodynamic quantities ($T_{eff},~P_{eff},~V,~S,~Φ_{eff}$). In this work, our focus is on the thermodynamic properties of phase transition for the four-dimensional dS spacetime with different values of the charge correction $\barϕ$. We find that with the increasing of the non-line…

We investigate the fine-grained entropy of the de Sitter cosmological horizon. Starting from three-dimensional pure de Sitter space, we consider a partial reduction approach, which supplies an auxiliary system acting as a heat bath both at future infinity and inside the static patch. This allows us to study the time-dependent entropy of radiation collected for both observers in the out-of-equilibrium Unruh-de Sitter state, analogous to black hole evaporation for a cosmological horizon. Central to our analysis in the static patch is the identification of a weakly gravitating region close to the…

We consider the one-loop partition function of free quantum field theory in locally Anti-de Sitter space-times. In three dimensions, the one loop determinants for scalar, gauge and graviton excitations are computed explicitly using heat kernel techniques. We obtain precisely the result anticipated by Brown and Henneaux: the partition function includes a sum over "boundary excitations" of AdS3, which are the Virasoro descendants of empty Anti-de Sitter space. This result also allows us to compute the one-loop corrections to the Euclidean action of the BTZ black hole as well its higher genus gen…
The holographic principle implies a vast reduction in the number of degrees of freedom of quantum gravity. This idea can be made precise in AdS_3, where the the stringy or gravitational exclusion principle asserts that certain perturbative excitations are not present in the exact quantum spectrum. We show that this effect is visible directly in the bulk gravity theory: the norm of the offending linearized state is zero or negative. When the norm is negative, the theory is signaling its own breakdown as an effective field theory; this provides a perturbative bulk explanation for the stringy exc…
In this paper, we study thermodynamic features of the charged rotating accelerating black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime. First, we consider these black holes as the thermodynamic systems and analyze thermal stability/instability through the use of heat capacity in the canonical ensemble. We also investigate the effects of angular momentum, electric charge and string tension on the thermodynamic quantities and stability of the system. Considering the known relation between pressure and the cosmological constant, we extract the critical quantities and discuss how the mentioned parameters aff…

It has been predicted that an accelerating electron performs a Brownian motion in the inertial frame. This Brownian motion in the inertial frame has its roots in the interaction with the thermal excitation given by the Unruh effect in the accelerating frame. If such a prediction is possible, we correspondingly propose a prediction in this study that the thermal radiation appears in the inertial frame from an electron heated by the Unruh effect in the accelerating frame. The point in our prediction is, although the Unruh effect is only in the accelerating frame, if the appearance of the Brownia…
In General Relativity coupled to a non-linear electromagnetic field, together with a negative cosmological constant, we obtain the general static spherical symmetric black hole solution with magnetic charges, which is asymptotic to anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-times. In particular, for a degenerate case the solution becomes a Hayward-AdS black hole, which is regular everywhere in the full space-time. The existence of such a regular black hole solution preserves the weak energy condition while the strong energy condition is violated. We then derive the first law and the Smarr formula of the black…
The Snyder-de Sitter (SdS) model which is invariant under the action of the de Sitter group, is an example of a noncommutative spacetime with three fundamental scales. In this paper, we considered the massless Dirac fermions in graphene layer in a curved Snyder spacetime which are subjected to an external magnetic field. We employed representation in the momentum space to derive the energy eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the system. Then, we used the deduced energy function obtaining the internal energy, heat capacity, and entropy functions. We investigated the role of the fundamental sc…
