Topological phases of matter have established a new paradigm in physics, bringing quantum phenomena to the macroscopic scale and hosting exotic emergent quasiparticles. In this thesis, I theoretically and experimentally demonstrate with my collaborators the first Weyl semimetal, TaAs, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), directly observing its emergent Weyl fermions and topological Fermi arc surface states [Science 349, 6248 (2015); Nat. Commun. 6, 7373 (2015); PRL 116, 066802 (2016)]. Next, I discover high-degeneracy topological chiral fermions in the chiral crystals RhSi and CoSi, with wide topological energy window, maximal separation in momentum space and giant Fermi arcs [Nature 567, 500 (2019); Nat. Mat. 17, 978 (2018)]. I establish a natural relationship between the structural and topological chirality, associated with a robust topological state which we predict supports a four-unit quantized photogalvanic effect [PRL 119, 206401 (2017)]. I also discuss the first quantum topological superlattice, in multilayer heterostructures consisting of alternating topological and trivial insulators [Sci. Adv. 3, e1501692 (2017)]. The Dirac cones at each interface tunnel across layers, forming an emergent atomic chain where the Dirac cones serve as atomic orbitals. I achieve unprecedented control of hopping amplitudes within the superlattice, realizing a topological phase transition. Lastly, I discover a room-temperature topological magnet in Co$_2$MnGa [Science 365, 1278 (2019); PRL 119, 156401 (2017)]. I observe topological Weyl lines and drumhead surface states by ARPES, demonstrating a topological invariant supported by the material's intrinsic magnetic order. I also find that the large anomalous Hall effect in Co$_2$MnGa arises from the Weyl lines. I hope that my discovery of Co$_2$MnGa establishes topological magnetism as a new frontier in condensed matter physics.
We present a general approach to obtain effective field theories for topological crystalline insulators whose low-energy theories are described by massive Dirac fermions. We show that these phases are characterized by the responses to spatially dependent mass parameters with interfaces. These mass interfaces implement the dimensional reduction procedure such that the state of interest is smoothly deformed into a topological crystal, which serves as a representative state of a phase in the general classification. Effective field theories are obtained by integrating out the massive Dirac fermion…
The tunability of topological surface states (SS) and controllable opening of the Dirac gap are of fundamental and practical interest in the field of topological materials. In topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), a spontaneously generated Dirac gap was recently observed, which was ascribed to broken cubic crystal symmetry. However, this structural distortion has not been directly observed so far, and the microscopic mechanism of Dirac gap opening via crystal symmetry breaking remains elusive. In this work, we present scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of a TCI Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$…
We present a scheme to explicitly construct and classify general topological states jointly protected by an onsite symmetry group and a spatial symmetry group. We show that all these symmetry protected topological states can be adiabatically deformed (allowing for stacking of trivial states) into a special class of states we call topological crystals. A topological crystal in, for example, three dimensions is a real-space assembly of finite-sized pieces of topological states in one and two dimensions protected by the local symmetry group alone, arranged in a configuration invariant under the s…
We introduce a novel class of interaction-enabled topological crystalline insulators in two- and three-dimensional electronic systems, which we call "topological crystalline magnet." It is protected by the product of the time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and a mirror symmetry or a rotation symmetry $\mathcal{R}$. A topological crystalline magnet exhibits two intriguing features: (i) it cannot be adiabatically connected to any Slater insulator and (ii) the edge state is robust against coupling electrons to the edge. These features are protected by the anomalous symmetry transformation proper…
Madsen et al. [arXiv:1307.2577] claim that one-dimensional insulating crystals and one-dimensional insulating quasicrystals are topologically equivalent and, thus, trivial. In this comment, we clarify that in topological classification of one-dimensional systems, quasiperiodicity plays a role similar to that of a symmetry. Hence, periodic systems are out of the quasiperiodic topological space, and the equivalence between quasicrystals and crystals becomes immaterial.
The surface of a three-dimensional topological electron system often hosts symmetry-protected gapless surface states. With the effect of electron interactions, these surface states can be gapped out without symmetry breaking by a surface topological order, in which the anyon excitations carry anomalous symmetry fractionalization that cannot be realized in a genuine two-dimensional system. We show that for a mirror-symmetry-protected topological crystalline insulator with mirror Chern number $n=4$, its surface can be gapped out by an anomalous $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order, where all anyons c…
SmB6 has recently been predicted to be a Topological Kondo Insulator, the first strongly correlated heavy fermion material to exhibit topological surface states. High quality crystals are necessary to investigate the topological properties of this material. Single crystal growth of the rare earth hexaboride, SmB6, has been carried out by the floating zone technique using a high power xenon arc lamp image furnace. Large, high quality single-crystals are obtained by this technique. The crystals produced by the floating zone technique are free of contamination from flux materials and have been ch…
SmB6 was recently proposed to be both a strong topological insulator and a topological crystalline insulator. For this and related cubic topological Kondo insulators, we prove the existence of four different topological phases, distinguished by the sign of mirror Chern numbers. We characterize these phases in terms of simple observables, and we provide concrete tight-binding models for each phase. Based on theoretical and experimental results for SmB6 we conclude that it realizes the phase with C^+_{k_z=0}=+2, C^+_{k_z=pi}=+1, C^+_{k_x=k_y}=-1, and we propose a corresponding minimal model.
The celebrated tenfold-way of Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes discern any quantum system by its pattern of non-spatial symmetries. It lays at the core of the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors which provided a complete classification of weakly-interacting electrons' non-crystalline topological phases for all symmetry classes. Over recent years, a plethora of topological phenomena with diverse surface states has been discovered in crystalline materials. In this paper, we obtain an exhaustive classification of topologically distinct groundstates as well as topologica…
Skyrmions are spatially localized magnetic swirls which carry a nonzero integer topological charge. We study crystals of skyrmions in a two-dimensional ferromagnet model with chiral interactions induced by the presence of broken inversion symmetry. We show that non-linear quartic mode-coupling terms allowed by symmetry enhances the Zeeman-field range over which the skyrmion-crystal phase remains stable. Furthermore, it leads to a significant dependence of the lattice constant of this spin crystal over this wide field range. Conduction electrons coupled to such a tunable spin crystal are shown …
Crystalline topological phases have recently attracted a lot of experimental and theoretical attention. Key advances include the complete elementary band representation analyses of crystalline matter by symmetry indicators and the discovery of higher-order hinge and corner states. However, current classification schemes of such phases are either implicit or limited in scope. We present a new scheme for the explicit classification of crystalline topological insulators and superconductors. These phases are protected by crystallographic point group symmetries and are characterized by bulk topolog…
Motivated by recent progress in crystalline symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of interacting bosons, we study topological crystalline insulators/superconductors (TCIs) of strongly interacting fermions. We construct a class of intrinsically interacting fermionic TCIs, and show that they are beyond both free-fermion TCIs and bosonic crystalline SPT phases. We also show how these phases can be characterized by symmetry protected gapless fermion modes on the corners/hinges of an open system.
Topological properties of Harper and generalized Fibonacci chains are studied in crystalline cases, i.e., for rational values of the modulation frequency. The Harper and Fibonacci crystals at fixed frequency are connected by an interpolating one-parameter Hamiltonian. As the parameter is varied, one observes topological phase transitions, i.e., changes in the Chern integers of two bands due to the degeneracy of these bands at some parameter value. For small frequency, corresponding to a semiclassical regime, the degeneracies are shown to occur when the average energy of the two bands is approx…
The discovery of topological insulators has reformed modern materials science, promising to be a platform for tabletop relativistic physics, electronic transport without scattering, and stable quantum computation. Topological invariants are used to label distinct types of topological insulators. But it is not generally known how many or which invariants can exist in any given crystalline material. Using a new and efficient counting algorithm, we study the topological invariants that arise in time-reversal symmetric crystals. This results in a unified picture that explains the relations between…
The discovery of quadrupole topology opens a new horizon in the study of topological phenomena. However, the existing experimental realizations of quadrupole topological insulators in symmorphic lattices with $π$-fluxes often break the protective mirror symmetry. Here, we present a theory for anomalous quadrupole topological insulators in nonsymmorphic crystals without flux, using 2D sonic crystals with $p4gm$ and $p2gg$ symmetry groups as concrete examples. We reveal that the anomalous quadrupole topology is protected by two orthogonal glide symmetries in square or rectangular lattices. The d…
The boundary of topological phases of matter can manifest its topology nature, which leads to the so-called boundary-bulk correspondence (BBC) of topological phases. In this Letter, we construct a one-to-one correspondence between the boundary theories of fermionic SPT (fSPT) phases protected by crystalline symmetry and on-site symmetry in 2D fermionic systems, which follow the so-called crystalline equivalence principle. We dub such correspondence crystalline equivalent BBC. We illustrate this correspondence by two simple examples and as an application, we discover the topological boundary th…
Skyrmions are topologically nontrivial, magnetic quasi-particles, that are characterized by a topological charge. A regular array of skyrmions - a skyrmion crystal (SkX) - features the topological Hall effect (THE) of electrons, that, in turn, gives rise to the Hall effect of the skyrmions themselves. It is commonly believed that antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystals (AFM-SkXs) lack both effects. In this Rapid Communication, we present a generally applicable method to create stable AFM-SkXs by growing a two sublattice SkX onto a collinear antiferromagnet. As an example we show that both types of…
A crystalline topological phase is a topological phase with spatial symmetries. In this work, we give a very general physical picture of such phases: a topological phase with spatial symmetry $G$ (with internal symmetry $G_{\mathrm{int}} \leq G$) is described by a *defect network*: a $G$-symmetric network of defects in a topological phase with internal symmetry $G_{\mathrm{int}}$. The defect network picture works both for symmetry-protected topological (SPT) and symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, in systems of either bosons or fermions. We derive this picture both by physical argument…
Motivated by intertwined crystal symmetries and topological phases, we study the possible realization of topological insulator in nonsymmorphic crystals at integer fillings. In particular, we consider spin orbit coupled electronic systems of two-dimensional crystal Shastry-Sutherland lattice at integer filling where the gapless line degeneracy is protected by glide reflection symmetry. Based on a simple tight-binding model, we investigate how the topological insulating phase is stabilized by breaking nonsymmorphic symmetries but in the presence of time reversal symmetry and inversion symmetry.…
We put the theory of interacting topological crystalline phases on a systematic footing. These are topological phases protected by space-group symmetries. Our central tool is an elucidation of what it means to "gauge" such symmetries. We introduce the notion of a "crystalline topological liquid", and argue that most (and perhaps all) phases of interest are likely to satisfy this criterion. We prove a Crystalline Equivalence Principle, which states that in Euclidean space, crystalline topological liquids with symmetry group $G$ are in one-to-one correspondence with topological phases protected …
Recently discovered Weyl semimetals (WSM) have found special place in topological condensed matter studies for they represent first example of massless Weyl fermions found in condensed matter systems. A WSM shows gapless bulk energy spectra with Dirac-like point degeneracies, famously called Weyl nodes, which carry with themselves well defined chiralities and topologically protected chiral charges. One finds the Berry curvature of the Bloch bands to become singular, like in a magnetic monopole, at these Weyl nodes. Moreover, these systems feature topological surface states in the form of open …
Spin textures with nontrivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, have attracted attention as a source of unconventional magnetic, transport, and optical phenomena. Recently, a new generation of topological spin textures has been extensively studied in itinerant magnets; in contrast to the conventional ones induced, e.g., by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric systems, they are characterized by extremely short magnetic periods and stable even in centrosymmetric systems. Here we review such new types of topological spin textures with particular emphasis on their st…
We show that in crystalline insulators point group symmetry alone gives rise to a topological classification based on the quantization of electric polarization. Using C3 rotational symmetry as an example, we first prove that the polarization is quantized and can only take three inequivalent values. Therefore, a Z3 topological classification exists. A concrete tight-binding model is derived to demonstrate the Z3 topological phase transition. Using first-principles calculations, we identify graphene on BN substrate as a possible candidate to realize the Z3 topological states. To complete our ana…
We investigate the tensor network representations of fermionic crystalline symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases on two-dimensional lattices. As a mapping from virtual indices to physical indices, projected entangled-pair state (PEPS) serves as a concrete way to construct the wavefunctions of 2D crystalline fermionic SPT (fSPT) phases protected by 17 wallpaper group symmetries, for both spinless and spin-1/2 fermions. Based on PEPS, the full classification of 2D crystalline fSPT phases with wallpaper groups can be obtained. Tensor network states provide a natural framework for studying 2…
