We present a calculation of the pion quark momentum fraction, $\langle x \rangle$, and its third Mellin moment $\langle x^2 \rangle$. We also obtain directly, for the first time, $\langle x \rangle$ and $\langle x^2 \rangle$ for the kaon using local operators. We use an ensemble of two degenerate light, a strange and a charm quark ($N_f=2+1+1$) of maximally twisted mass fermions with clover improvement. The quark masses are chosen so that they reproduce a pion mass of about 260 MeV, and a kaon mass of 530 MeV. The lattice spacing of the ensemble is 0.093 fm and the lattice has a spatial extent of 3 fm. We analyze several values of the source-sink time separation within the range of $1.12-2.23$ fm to study and eliminate excited-states contributions. The necessary renormalization functions are calculated non-perturbatively in the RI$'$ scheme, and are converted to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme at a scale of 2 GeV. The final values for the momentum fraction are $\langle x \rangle^π_{u^+}=0.261(3)_{\rm stat}(6)_{\rm syst}$, $\langle x \rangle^K_{u^+}=0.246(2)_{\rm stat}(2)_{\rm syst}$, and $\langle x \rangle^K_{s^+}=0.317(2)_{\rm stat}(1)_{\rm syst}$. For the third Mellin moments we find $\langle x^2 \rangle^π_{u^+}=0.082(21)_{\rm stat}(17)_{\rm syst}$, $\langle x^2 \rangle^K_{u^+}=0.093(5)_{\rm stat}(3)_{\rm syst}$, and $\langle x^2 \rangle^K_{s^+}=0.134(5)_{\rm stat}(2)_{\rm syst}$. The reported systematic uncertainties are due to excited-state contamination. We also give the ratio $\langle x^2 \rangle/\langle x \rangle$ which is an indication of how quickly the PDFs lose support at large $x$.
We present a calculation of the connected-diagram contributions to the first three non-trivial Mellin moments for the pion and kaon, extracted using local operators with up to 3 covariant derivatives. We use one ensemble of gauge configurations with two degenerate light, a strange and a charm quark ($N_f$=2+1+1) of maximally twisted mass fermions with clover improvement. The ensemble has a pion mass $\sim$260 MeV, and a kaon mass $\sim$530 MeV. We reconstruct the $x$-dependence of the PDFs via fits to our results, and find that our lattice data favor a $(1-x)^2$-behavior in the large-$x$ regio…
We present a calculation of the pion and kaon Mellin moment $\langle x^3 \rangle$ extracted directly in lattice QCD using a three-derivative local operator. We use one ensemble of gauge configurations with two degenerate light, a strange and a charm quark ($N_f=2+1+1$) of maximally twisted mass fermions with clover improvement. The ensemble reproduces a pion mass $\sim260$ MeV, and a kaon mass $\sim530$ MeV. Excited-states contamination is evaluated using four values of the source-sink time separation within the range of $1.12-1.67$ fm. We use an operator that is free of mixing, and apply a mu…

We explore the feasibility of determining Mellin moments of the pion's light cone distribution amplitude using the heavy quark operator product expansion (HOPE) method. As the first step of a proof of principle study we pursue a determination of the second Mellin moment. We discuss our choice of kinematics which allows us to successfully extract the moment at low pion momentum. We describe the numerical simulation, and describe the data analysis, which leads us to a preliminary determination of the second Mellin moment in the continuum limit in the quenched approximation as $\langleξ^2\rangle=…
The pion light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) is a central non-perturbative object of interest for the calculation of high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. In this article, we discuss the calculation of the second and fourth Mellin moment of the pion LCDA using a heavy-quark operator product expansion. The resulting value for the second Mellin moment is $ \langle{ ξ^2 }\rangle(μ= 2~\text{GeV})= 0.210 \pm 0.013\text{ (stat.)} \pm 0.034\text{ (sys.)}$. This result is compatible with those from previous determinations of this quantity.
We evaluate the valence double parton distribution (dPDF) of the pion in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. At the low-energy quark-model scale and in the chiral limit a particularly simple factorized form $D(x_1,x_2, \vec{q}) = δ(1-x_1-x_2) F(\vec{q})$ follows, where $x_{1,2}$ denote the longitudinal momentum fractions of the valence quark and antiquark, and $\vec{q}$ is their relative transverse momentum. For $\vec{q}=\vec{0}$ our result complies to the Gaunt-Sterling sum rules. We carry out the necessary dDGLAP evolution to higher scales via the Mellin moments and explore its impact on the corr…
We present a lattice QCD determination of the distribution amplitude (DA) of the pion and the first few Mellin moments from an analysis of the quasi-DA matrix element within the leading-twist framework. We perform our study on a HISQ ensemble with $a=0.076$ fm lattice spacing with the Wilson-Clover valence quark mass tuned to the physical point. We analyze the ratios of pion quasi-DA matrix elements at short distances using the leading-twist Mellin operator product expansion (OPE) at the next-to-leading order and the conformal OPE at the leading-logarithmic order. We find a robust result for t…
We present a calculation of valence double parton distributions of the pion in the framework of chiral quark models. The result obtained at the low-energy quark model scale is particularly simple, where in the chiral limit a factorized form follows, $D(x_1,x_2, \vec{q}) = δ(1-x_1-x_2) F(\vec{q})$ with $x_{1,2}$ standing for the longitudinal momentum fractions of the valence quark and antiquark, and $\vec{q}$ denotes the relative transverse momentum. For $\vec{q}=\vec{0}$ the result satisfies the Gaunt-Sterling sum rules. The QCD evolution to higher scales is carried out within the dDGLAP frame…
The pion light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) is a central non-perturbative object of interest for high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. In this article, the second Mellin moment of the pion LCDA is determined as a proof-of-concept calculation for the first numerical implementation of the heavy-quark operator product expansion (HOPE) method. The resulting value for the second Mellin moment, determined in quenched QCD at a pion mass of $m_π=550$ MeV at a factorization scale of 2 GeV is $ \langle ξ^2 \rangle = 0.210 \pm 0.013\text{ (stat.)} \pm 0.034\text{ (sys.)}$. This…
Building upon the PDFSense framework developed in Ref. [1], we perform a comprehensive analysis of the sensitivity of present and future high-energy data to a number of quantities commonly evaluated in lattice gauge theory, with a particular focus on the integrated Mellin moments of nucleon parton distribution functions (PDFs), such as $\langle x \rangle_{u^+ - d^+}$ and $\langle x \rangle_{g}$, as well as $x$-dependent quark quasi-distributions -- in particular, that of the isovector combination. Our results demonstrate the potential for lattice calculations and phenomenological quark distrib…
We investigate the pseudoscalar (PS) meson ($π$ and $K$) quasi-distribution amplitude (QDA), which is supposed to be an asymptotic analog to the meson distribution amplitude (DA) $ϕ_{π,K}(x)$ in the limit of the large longitudinal PS-meson momentum, i.e. $p_3\to\infty$, in the nonperturbative region. For this purpose, we employ the nonlocal chiral-quark model (NLChQM) in the light-front formalism with a minimal Fock-state for the mesons $\sim q\bar{q}$ at the low-energy scale parameter of the model $Λ\sim1$ GeV. As a trial, we extract the transverse-momentum distribution amplitude (TMDA) from …
Chiral-scale perturbation theory $χ$PT$_σ$ has been proposed as an alternative to chiral $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ perturbation theory which explains the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule for kaon decays. It is based on a low-energy expansion about an infrared fixed point in three-flavor QCD. In $χ$PT$_σ$, quark condensation $\langle\bar q q \rangle_\mathrm{vac} \neq 0$ induces nine Nambu-Goldstone bosons: $π, K, η$ and a QCD dilaton $σ$ which we identify with the $f_0(500)$ resonance. Partial conservation of the dilatation and chiral currents constrains low-energy constants which enter the effective Lagrangian o…
Gluon dressing of the light quarks within hadrons is very strong and extremely important in that it dynamically generates most of the observable mass through the breaking of chiral symmetry. The quark and gluon parton densities, $q(x)$ and $g(x)$, are necessarily interrelated since any gluon emission and absorption process, especially dressing of a quark, contributes to $g(x)$ and modifies $q(x)$. Guided by long-established results for the parton-in-parton distributions from a strict 1-loop perturbative analysis of a quark target, we extend the non-perturbative QCD approach based on the Rainbo…
