Genetic Algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm and a metaheuristic that was introduced to overcome the failure of gradient based method in solving the optimization and search problems. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact on the convergence of Genetic Algorithm vis-a-vis 0/1 knapsack. By keeping the number of generations and the initial population fixed, different crossover methods like one point crossover and two-point crossover were evaluated and juxtaposed with each other. In addition to this, the impact of different selection methods like rank-selection, roulette wheel and tournament selection were evaluated and compared. Our results indicate that convergence rate of combination of one point crossover with tournament selection, with respect to 0/1 knapsack problem that we considered, is the highest and thereby most efficient in solving 0/1 knapsack.
The 0-1 knapsack problem is a well-known combinatorial optimisation problem. Approximation algorithms have been designed for solving it and they return provably good solutions within polynomial time. On the other hand, genetic algorithms are well suited for solving the knapsack problem and they find reasonably good solutions quickly. A naturally arising question is whether genetic algorithms are able to find solutions as good as approximation algorithms do. This paper presents a novel multi-objective optimisation genetic algorithm for solving the 0-1 knapsack problem. Experiment results show t…
The 0/1 knapsack problem is weakly NP-hard in that there exist pseudo-polynomial time algorithms based on dynamic programming that can solve it exactly. There are also the core branch and bound algorithms that can solve large randomly generated instances in a very short amount of time. However, as the correlation between the variables is increased, the difficulty of the problem increases. Recently a new class of knapsack problems was introduced by D. Pisinger called the spanner knapsack instances. These instances are unsolvable by the core branch and bound instances; and as the size of the coe…
The 0/1 multidimensional knapsack problem is the 0/1 knapsack problem with m constraints which makes it difficult to solve using traditional methods like dynamic programming or branch and bound algorithms. We present a genetic algorithm for the multidimensional knapsack problem with Java and C++ code that is able to solve publicly available instances in a very short computational duration. Our algorithm uses iteratively computed Lagrangian multipliers as constraint weights to augment the greedy algorithm for the multidimensional knapsack problem and uses that information in a greedy crossover …
Cryptanalysis of knapsack cipher is a fascinating problem which has eluded the computing fraternity for decades. However, in most of the cases either the time complexity of the proposed algorithm is colossal or an insufficient number of samples have been taken for verification. The present work proposes a Genetic Algorithm based technique for cryptanalysis of knapsack cipher. The experiments conducted prove the validity of the technique. The results prove that the technique is better than the existing techniques. An extensive review has been carried out in order to find the gaps in the existin…
The chance-constrained knapsack problem is a variant of the classical knapsack problem where each item has a weight distribution instead of a deterministic weight. The objective is to maximize the total profit of the selected items under the condition that the weight of the selected items only exceeds the given weight bound with a small probability of $α$. In this paper, consider problem-specific single-objective and multi-objective approaches for the problem. We examine the use of heavy-tail mutations and introduce a problem-specific crossover operator to deal with the chance-constrained knap…
Evolutionary algorithms have been widely used for a range of stochastic optimization problems in order to address complex real-world optimization problems. We consider the knapsack problem where the profits involve uncertainties. Such a stochastic setting reflects important real-world scenarios where the profit that can be realized is uncertain. We introduce different ways of dealing with stochastic profits based on tail inequalities such as Chebyshev's inequality and Hoeffding bounds that allow to limit the impact of uncertainties. We examine simple evolutionary algorithms and the use of heav…
Premature convergence is one of the important issues while using Genetic Programming for data modeling. It can be avoided by improving population diversity. Intelligent genetic operators can help to improve the population diversity. Crossover is an important operator in Genetic Programming. So, we have analyzed number of intelligent crossover operators and proposed an algorithm with the modification of soft brood crossover operator. It will help to improve the population diversity and reduce the premature convergence. We have performed experiments on three different symbolic regression problem…
C++ code snippets from a multi-core parallel memory-efficient crossover for genetic programming are given. They may be adapted for separate generation evolutionary algorithms where large chromosomes or small RAM require no more than M + (2 times nthreads) simultaneously active individuals.
Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) and Genetic Local Search (GLS) are two optimization algorithms that have been successfully applied to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). In this paper we define new crossover operator then redefine ACAs ants as operate according to defined crossover operator then put forward our GLS that uses these ants to solve Symmetric TSP (STSP) instances.
This paper investigates the use of more than one crossover operator to enhance the performance of genetic algorithms. Novel crossover operators are proposed such as the Collision crossover, which is based on the physical rules of elastic collision, in addition to proposing two selection strategies for the crossover operators, one of which is based on selecting the best crossover operator and the other randomly selects any operator. Several experiments on some Travelling Salesman Problems (TSP) have been conducted to evaluate the proposed methods, which are compared to the well-known Modified c…
Genetic algorithms (GAs) are an optimization technique that has been successfully used on many real-world problems. There exist different approaches to their theoretical study. In this paper we complete a recently presented approach to model one-point crossover using pretopologies (or Cech topologies) in two ways. First, we extend it to the case of n-points crossover. Then, we experimentally study how the distance distribution changes when the number of crossover points increases.
The genetic algorithm (GA) is an optimization and search technique based on the principles of genetics and natural selection. A GA allows a population composed of many individuals to evolve under specified selection rules to a state that maximizes the "fitness" function. In that process, crossover operator plays an important role. To comprehend the GAs as a whole, it is necessary to understand the role of a crossover operator. Today, there are a number of different crossover operators that can be used in GAs. However, how to decide what operator to use for solving a problem? A number of test f…
The Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most famous optimization problems. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) is one of metaheuristics that have been applied to TSP. The Crossover and mutation operators are two important elements of GA. There are many TSP solver crossover operators. In this paper, we state implementation of some recent TSP solver crossovers at first and then we use each of them in GA to solve some Symmetric TSP (STSP) instances and finally compare their effects on speed and accuracy of presented GA.
Genetic programming is a powerful heuristic search technique that is used for a number of real world applications to solve among others regression, classification, and time-series forecasting problems. A lot of progress towards a theoretic description of genetic programming in form of schema theorems has been made, but the internal dynamics and success factors of genetic programming are still not fully understood. In particular, the effects of different crossover operators in combination with offspring selection are largely unknown. This contribution sheds light on the ability of well-known GP…
In several combinatorial optimization problems arising in cryptography and design theory, the admissible solutions must often satisfy a balancedness constraint, such as being represented by bitstrings with a fixed number of ones. For this reason, several works in the literature tackling these optimization problems with Genetic Algorithms (GA) introduced new balanced crossover operators which ensure that the offspring has the same balancedness characteristics of the parents. However, the use of such operators has never been thoroughly motivated, except for some generic considerations about sear…
We investigate a family of $(μ+λ)$ Genetic Algorithms (GAs) which creates offspring either from mutation or by recombining two randomly chosen parents. By scaling the crossover probability, we can thus interpolate from a fully mutation-only algorithm towards a fully crossover-based GA. We analyze, by empirical means, how the performance depends on the interplay of population size and the crossover probability. Our comparison on 25 pseudo-Boolean optimization problems reveals an advantage of crossover-based configurations on several easy optimization tasks, whereas the picture for more complex …
In evolutionary algorithms, genetic operators iteratively generate new offspring which constitute a potentially valuable set of search history. To boost the performance of crossover in real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA), in this paper we propose to exploit the search history cached so far in an online style during the iteration. Specifically, survivor individuals over past few generations are collected and stored in the archive to form the search history. We introduce a simple yet effective crossover model driven by the search history (abbreviated as SHX). In particular, the search history is…
Genetic algorithm includes some parameters that should be adjusting so that the algorithm can provide positive results. Crossover operators play very important role by constructing competitive Genetic Algorithms (GAs). In this paper, the basic conceptual features and specific characteristics of various crossover operators in the context of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) are discussed. The results of experimental comparison of more than six different crossover operators for the TSP are presented. The experiment results show that OX operator enables to achieve a better solutions than other…
In practise, it is often desirable to provide the decision-maker with a rich set of diverse solutions of decent quality instead of just a single solution. In this paper we study evolutionary diversity optimization for the knapsack problem (KP). Our goal is to evolve a population of solutions that all have a profit of at least $(1-\varepsilon)\cdot OPT$, where OPT is the value of an optimal solution. Furthermore, they should differ in structure with respect to an entropy-based diversity measure. To this end we propose a simple $(μ+1)$-EA with initial approximate solutions calculated by a well-k…
Multi Expression Programming (MEP) is a Genetic Programming variant that uses linear chromosomes for solution encoding. A unique feature of MEP is its ability of encoding multiple solutions of a problem in a single chromosome. In this paper we use Multi Expression Programming for evolving digital circuits for a well-known NP-Complete problem: the knapsack (subset sum) problem. Numerical experiments show that Multi Expression Programming performs well on the considered test problems.

Traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a well-known in computing field. There are many researches to improve the genetic algorithm for solving TSP. In this paper, we propose two new crossover operators and new mechanism of combination crossover operators in genetic algorithm for solving TSP. We experimented on TSP instances from TSP-Lib and compared the results of proposed algorithm with genetic algorithm (GA), which used MSCX. Experimental results show that, our proposed algorithm is better than the GA using MSCX on the min, mean cost values.
We re-investigate a fundamental question: how effective is crossover in Genetic Algorithms in combining building blocks of good solutions? Although this has been discussed controversially for decades, we are still lacking a rigorous and intuitive answer. We provide such answers for royal road functions and OneMax, where every bit is a building block. For the latter we show that using crossover makes every ($μ$+$λ$) Genetic Algorithm at least twice as fast as the fastest evolutionary algorithm using only standard bit mutation, up to small-order terms and for moderate $μ$ and $λ$. Crossover is b…
In the context of evolutionary quantum computing in the literal meaning, a quantum crossover operation has not been introduced so far. Here, we introduce a novel quantum genetic algorithm which has a quantum crossover procedure performing crossovers among all chromosomes in parallel for each generation. A complexity analysis shows that a quadratic speedup is achieved over its classical counterpart in the dominant factor of the run time to handle each generation.
Explaining to what extent the real power of genetic algorithms lies in the ability of crossover to recombine individuals into higher quality solutions is an important problem in evolutionary computation. In this paper we show how the interplay between mutation and crossover can make genetic algorithms hillclimb faster than their mutation-only counterparts. We devise a Markov Chain framework that allows to rigorously prove an upper bound on the runtime of standard steady state genetic algorithms to hillclimb the OneMax function. The bound establishes that the steady-state genetic algorithms are…
In this paper the approach to solving several combinatorial optimization problems using the local search and the genetic algorithm techniques is proposed. Initially this approach was developed in purpose to overcome some difficulties inhibiting the application of above mentioned techniques to the problems of the Questionnaire Theory. But when the algorithms were developed it became clear that them could be successfully applied also to the Minimum Set Cover, the 0-1-Knapsack and probably to other combinatorial optimization problems.
Inventory management is considered to be an important field in Supply Chain Management because the cost of inventories in a supply chain accounts for about 30 percent of the value of the product. The service provided to the customer eventually gets enhanced once the efficient and effective management of inventory is carried out all through the supply chain. The precise estimation of optimal inventory is essential since shortage of inventory yields to lost sales, while excess of inventory may result in pointless storage costs. Thus the determination of the inventory to be held at various levels…

Neuroevolution has recently been shown to be quite competitive in reinforcement learning (RL) settings, and is able to alleviate some of the drawbacks of gradient-based approaches. This paper will focus on applying neuroevolution using a simple genetic algorithm (GA) to find the weights of a neural network that produce optimally behaving agents. In addition, we present two novel modifications that improve the data efficiency and speed of convergence when compared to the initial implementation. The modifications are evaluated on the FrozenLake environment provided by OpenAI gym and prove to be …
For theoretical analyses there are two specifics distinguishing GP from many other areas of evolutionary computation. First, the variable size representations, in particular yielding a possible bloat (i.e. the growth of individuals with redundant parts). Second, the role and realization of crossover, which is particularly central in GP due to the tree-based representation. Whereas some theoretical work on GP has studied the effects of bloat, crossover had a surprisingly little share in this work. We analyze a simple crossover operator in combination with local search, where a preference for sm…
This paper proposes a generalized Hybrid Real-coded Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm (HRCQEA) for optimizing complex functions as well as combinatorial optimization. The main idea of HRCQEA is to devise a new technique for mutation and crossover operators. Using the evolutionary equation of PSO a Single-Multiple gene Mutation (SMM) is designed and the concept of Arithmetic Crossover (AC) is used in the new Crossover operator. In HRCQEA, each triploid chromosome represents a particle and the position of the particle is updated using SMM and Quantum Rotation Gate (QRG), which can make the balance …
Multidimensional genetic programming represents candidate solutions as sets of programs, and thereby provides an interesting framework for exploiting building block identification. Towards this goal, we investigate the use of machine learning as a way to bias which components of programs are promoted, and propose two semantic operators to choose where useful building blocks are placed during crossover. A forward stagewise crossover operator we propose leads to significant improvements on a set of regression problems, and produces state-of-the-art results in a large benchmark study. We discuss …
Crossover is the process of recombining the genetic features of two parents. For many applications where crossover is applied to permutations, relevant genetic features are pairs of adjacent elements, also called edges in the permutation order. Recombination of edges without errors is thought to be an NP-hard problem, typically approximated by heuristics that either introduce new edges or are only able to produce a small variety of offspring. Here, we derive an algorithm for crossover of permutations that achieves perfect transmission of edges and produces a uniform sampling of all possible of…
The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most famous optimization problems. Greedy crossover designed by Greffenstette et al, can be used while Symmetric TSP (STSP) is resolved by Genetic Algorithm (GA). Researchers have proposed several versions of greedy crossover. Here we propose improved version of it. We compare our greedy crossover with some of recent crossovers, we use our greedy crossover and some recent crossovers in GA then compare crossovers on speed and accuracy.
In this paper, we perform an experimental study of optimal recombination operator for makespan minimization problem on single machine with sequence-dependent setup times ($1|s_{vu}|C_{\max}$). The computational experiment on benchmark problems from TSPLIB library indicates practical applicability of optimal recombination in crossover operator of genetic algorithm for $1|s_{vu}|C_{\max}$.
Most evolutionary algorithms (EAs) used in practice employ crossover. In contrast, only for few and mostly artificial examples a runtime advantage from crossover could be proven with mathematical means. The most convincing such result shows that the $(μ+1)$ genetic algorithm (GA) with population size $μ=O(n)$ optimizes jump functions with gap size $k \ge 3$ in time $O(n^k / μ+ n^{k-1}\log n)$, beating the $Θ(n^k)$ runtime of many mutation-based EAs. This result builds on a proof that the GA occasionally and then for an expected number of $Ω(μ^2)$ iterations has a population that is not dominat…
The hyperclimbing hypothesis is a hypothetical explanation for adaptation in genetic algorithms with uniform crossover (UGAs). Hyperclimbing is an intuitive, general-purpose, non-local search heuristic applicable to discrete product spaces with rugged or stochastic cost functions. The strength of this heuristic lie in its insusceptibility to local optima when the cost function is deterministic, and its tolerance for noise when the cost function is stochastic. Hyperclimbing works by decimating a search space, i.e. by iteratively fixing the values of small numbers of variables. The hyperclimbing…
A boundary evolution Algorithm (BEA) is proposed by simultaneously taking into account the bottom and the high-level crossover and mutation, ie., the boundary of the hierarchical genetic algorithm. Operators and optimal individuals based on optional annealing are designed. Based on the numerous versions of genetic algorithm, the boundary evolution approach with crossover and mutation has been tested on the SAT problem and compared with two competing methods: a traditional genetic algorithm and another traditional hierarchical genetic algorithm, and among some others. The results of the compara…

We discuss a novel genetic algorithm that can be used to find global minima on the potential energy surface of disordered ceramics and alloys using a real-space symmetry adapted crossover. Due to a high number of symmetrically equivalent solutions of many alloys a conventional genetic algorithms using reasonable population sizes are unable to locate the global minima for even the smallest systems. We demonstrate the superior performance of the use of symmetry adapted crossover by the comparison of that of a conventional GA for finding global minima of two binary Ising-type alloys that either o…

Universal induction relies on some general search procedure that is doomed to be inefficient. One possibility to achieve both generality and efficiency is to specialize this procedure w.r.t. any given narrow task. However, complete specialization that implies direct mapping from the task parameters to solutions (discriminative models) without search is not always possible. In this paper, partial specialization of general search is considered in the form of genetic algorithms (GAs) with a specialized crossover operator. We perform a feasibility study of this idea implementing such an operator i…
The $(1+(λ,λ))$ genetic algorithm is one of the few algorithms for which a super-constant speed-up through the use of crossover could be proven. So far, this algorithm has been used with parameters based also on intuitive considerations. In this work, we rigorously regard the whole parameter space and show that the asymptotic time complexity proven by Doerr and Doerr (GECCO 2015) for the intuitive choice is best possible among all settings for population size, mutation probability, and crossover bias.

In this paper a Metaheuristic approach for solving the N-Queens Problem is introduced to find the best possible solution in a reasonable amount of time. Genetic Algorithm is used with a novel fitness function as the Metaheuristic. The aim of N-Queens Problem is to place N queens on an N x N chessboard, in a way so that no queen is in conflict with the others. Chromosome representation and genetic operations like Mutation and Crossover are described in detail. Results show that this approach yields promising and satisfactory results in less time compared to that obtained from the previous appro…
In this paper, we propose a method to solve a bi-objective variant of the well-studied Traveling Thief Problem (TTP). The TTP is a multi-component problem that combines two classic combinatorial problems: Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) and Knapsack Problem (KP). We address the BI-TTP, a bi-objective version of the TTP, where the goal is to minimize the overall traveling time and to maximize the profit of the collected items. Our proposed method is based on a biased-random key genetic algorithm with customizations addressing problem-specific characteristics. We incorporate domain knowledge th…
Understanding how crossover works is still one of the big challenges in evolutionary computation research, and making our understanding precise and proven by mathematical means might be an even bigger one. As one of few examples where crossover provably is useful, the $(1+(λ, λ))$ Genetic Algorithm (GA) was proposed recently in [Doerr, Doerr, Ebel: TCS 2015]. Using the fitness level method, the expected optimization time on general OneMax functions was analyzed and a $O(\max\{n\log(n)/λ, λn\})$ bound was proven for any offspring population size $λ\in [1..n]$. We improve this work in several wa…
Genetic algorithms have been used in recent decades to solve a broad variety of search problems. These algorithms simulate natural selection to explore a parameter space in search of solutions for a broad variety of problems. In this paper, we explore the effects of introducing temporal heterogeneity in genetic algorithms. In particular, we set the crossover probability to be inversely proportional to the individual's fitness, i.e., better solutions change slower than those with a lower fitness. As case studies, we apply heterogeneity to solve the $N$-Queens and Traveling Salesperson problems.…
The heavy-tailed mutation operator proposed in Doerr, Le, Makhmara, and Nguyen (GECCO 2017), called \emph{fast mutation} to agree with the previously used language, so far was proven to be advantageous only in mutation-based algorithms. There, it can relieve the algorithm designer from finding the optimal mutation rate and nevertheless obtain a performance close to the one that the optimal mutation rate gives. In this first runtime analysis of a crossover-based algorithm using a heavy-tailed choice of the mutation rate, we show an even stronger impact. For the $(1+(λ,λ))$ genetic algorithm opt…

In this paper, we present a heuristic for designing facility layouts that are convenient for designing a unidirectional loop for material handling. We use genetic algorithm where the objective function and crossover and mutation operators have all been designed specifically for this purpose. Our design is made under flexible bay structure and comparisons are made with other layouts from the literature that were designed under flexible bay structure.
Bacteria have been a source of inspiration for the design of evolutionary algorithms. At the beginning of the 20th century synthetic biology was born, a discipline whose goal is the design of biological systems that do not exist in nature, for example, programmable synthetic bacteria. In this paper, we introduce as a novelty the designing of evolutionary algorithms where all the steps are conducted by synthetic bacteria. To this end, we designed a genetic algorithm, which we have named BAGA, illustrating its utility solving simple instances of optimization problems such as function optimizatio…
In this paper we study the problem of optimal layout of an offshore wind farm to minimize the wake effect impacts. Considering the specific requirements of concerned offshore wind farm, we propose an adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) which introduces location swaps to replace random crossovers in conventional GAs. That way the total number of turbines in the resulting layout will be effectively kept to the initially specified value. We experiment the proposed AGA method on three cases with free wind speed of 12 m/s, 20 m/s, and a typical offshore wind distribution setting respectively. Numerica…

(iii) Greedy constructive heuristic of W.Zhang and 3-opt local search heuristic are used to generate the initial population. A computational experiment on TSPLIB instances shows that the proposed algorithm yields competitive results…
