Possible existence of topologically protected surface in samarium hexaboride has created a strong need for investigations allowing to distinguish between properties coming from the surface states and those originating in the (remaining) bulk. Studies of SmB6 thin films represent a favorable approach allowing well defined variations of the bulk volume that is not affected by surface states. Moreover, thin films are highly desirable for potential technology applications. However, the growth of SmB6 thin films is accompanied by technology problems, which are typically associated with maintaining the correct stoichiometry of samarium and boron. Here we present feasibility study of SmB6 thin film synthesis by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from a single stoichiometric SmB6 target. As proved by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS), we succeeded to obtain the same ratio of samarium and boron in the films as that in the target. Thin films revealing characteristic electrical properties of (crystalline) SmB6 were successfully deposited on MgO, sapphire, and glass-ceramics substrates, when the substrates were kept at temperature of 600$^\circ$ C during the deposition. Performed electrical resistance studies have revealed that bulk properties of the films are only slightly affected by the substrate. Our results indicate that PLD is a suitable method for complex and intensive research of SmB6 and similar systems.
We report a detailed study of surface and interface properties of pulsed-laser deposited NiMnSb films on Si (100) substrate as a function of film thickness. As the thickness of films is reduced below 35 nm formation of a porous layer is observed. Porosity in this layer increases with decrease in NiMnSb film thickness. These morphological changes of the ultra thin films are reflected in the interesting transport and magnetic properties of these films. On the other hand, there are no influences of compositional in-homogeneity and surface/interface roughness on the magnetic and transport properti…
A comparative experimental study of pulsed laser ablation in vacuum of two binary semiconductors, zinc oxide and indium phosphide, has been performed using IR-and visible laser pulses with particular attention to cluster generation. Neutral and cationic Zn\_n O\_m and In\_n P\_m particles of various stoichiometry have been produced and investigated by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. At ZnO ablation, large cationic (n>9) and all neutral clusters are mainly stoichiometric in the ablation plume. In contrast, indium phosphide clusters are strongly indium-rich with In\_4 P being a magic cluster. …
An experimental study was conducted on controlling the growth mode of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films on SrTiO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) by tuning growth temperature, pressure and laser fluence. Different thin film morphology, crystallinity and stoichiometry have been observed depending on growth parameters. To understand the microscopic origin, the adatom nucleation, step advance processes and their relationship to film growth were theoretically analyzed and a growth diagram was constructed. Three boundaries between highly and poorly crystallized growth, 2D and 3D growth, stoi…
Control of thin film stoichiometry is of primary relevance to achieve desired functionality. Pulsed laser deposition ablating from binary-oxide targets (sequential deposition) can be applied to precisely control the film composition, offsetting the importance of growth conditions on the film stoichiometry. In this work, we demonstrate that the cation stoichiometry of SrTiO$_3$ thin films can be finely tuned by sequential deposition from SrO and TiO$_2$ targets. Homoepitaxial SrTiO$_3$ films were deposited at different substrate temperatures and Ti/Sr pulse ratios, allowing the establishment of…
Lanthanum manganite, LaMnO (LMO) is the parent compound for a class of hole doped(e.g. La1-xCaxMnO3, La1-xSrxMnO3) and electron doped (e.g. . La1-xCexMnO3, La1-xSnxMnO3) perovskite complex oxide materials. Strong correlation between the spin, lattice, charge and orbital degrees of freedom is a hallmark of these class of materials (popularly known as manganites). Competition and interplay of these degrees of freedom lead to a wide range of interesting electronic behavior including half-metallicity, colossal magneto-resistivity, etc. Although a lot of experimental research has been carried out on…
A special shaping of YAG:Nd^{3+} laser beam profile has been found to improve homogeneity and T_c of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} films being deposited by the pulsed laser. Targets of a considerably non-stoichiometric composition and substrates of slanting cuts have turned to be necessary for the high-quality film growing. Multiple droplets and solid particles ejected from the target surface by the infrared radiation are removed successfuly from the laser-induced plasma by use of a velocity filter.
We show that the quality of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 films grown by pulsed laser deposition can be enhanced by using a non-stoichiometric target with extra copper added to suppress the formation of a parasitic (Nd, Ce)2O3 phase. The properties of these films are less dependent on the exact annealing procedure after deposition as compared to films grown from a stoichiometric target. Film growth can be followed by a 1 bar oxygen annealing, after an initial vacuum annealing, while retaining the superconducting properties and quality. This enables the integration of electron-doped cuprates with their hole…
SrVO3 and SrNbO3 are perovskite-type transition-metal oxides with the same d1 electronic configuration. Although SrNbO3 (4d1) has a larger d orbital than SrVO3 (3d1), the reported electrical resistivity of SrNbO3 is much higher than that of SrVO3, probably owing to nonstoichiometry. In this paper, we grew epitaxial, high-conductivity stoichiometric SrNbO3 using pulsed laser deposition. The growth temperature strongly affected the Sr/Nb ratio and the oxygen content of the films, and we obtained stoichiometric SrNbO3 at a very narrow temperature window around 630 $°$C. The stoichiometric SrNbO3 …
We report the growth of highly c-axis oriented topological insulator (TI) BiSbTe1.5Se1.5 (BSTS) thin films by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The various growth parameters such as substrate temperature, Argon pressure in the deposition chamber and target to substrate distance are tuned to obtain the optimized conditions essential for stoichiometric and bulk insulating TI thin films. These films are highly c-axis oriented and exhibit all the four Raman modes characteristic to the R-3m space group. The quality of the deposited thin films is investigated using X-ray diffraction for cryst…
Superconducting magnesium diboride films with Tc0 ~ 24 K and sharp transition \~ 1 K were successfully prepared on silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition from a stoichiometric MgB2 target. Contrary to previous reports, anneals at 630 degree and a background of 2x10^(-4) torr Ar/4%H2 were performed without the requirement of Mg vapor or an Mg cap layer. This integration of superconducting MgB2 films on silicon may thus prove enabling in superconductor-semiconductor device applications. Images of surface morphology and cross-section profiles by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that…
In many transition metal oxides (TMOs), oxygen stoichiometry is one of the most critical parameters that plays a key role in determining the structural, physical, optical, and electrochemical properties of the material. However, controlling the growth to obtain high quality single crystal films having the right oxygen stoichiometry, especially in a high vacuum environment, has been viewed as a challenge. In this work, we show that through proper control of the plume kinetic energy, stoichiometric crystalline films can be synthesized without generating oxygen defects, even in high vacuum. We us…
Epitaxial thin films of stoichiometric ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ were grown on ${\rm SrTiO_3(110)}$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. From the high resolution x-ray diffraction measurements, the lattice parameters were determined as a function of temperature and the cooperative Jahn-Teller transition was found to occur at $T_{JT}$=573.0 K. Also measured was resonant x-ray scattering intensity of the orthorhombic (100) peak of ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ near the Mn K edge from low temperatures to above $T_{JT}$. We demonstrate that the integrated intensity of the (100) peak is proportional to …
High-mobility oxide heterostructures could be applied for high-frequency devices, transparent conductors, and spin-orbit logic devices. SrTiO$_3$ is one of the most studied oxide substrate materials for heterostructures. To date, the highest SrTiO3-based charge carrier mobility at 2 K was measured in the interfacial 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) of $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$. The formation mechanism and origin of the high electron mobility are not yet fully understood. This investigation presents a successful growth protocol to synthesise high mobility $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces, …
High quality stoichiometric magnetite (Fe3O4) films grown by infrared pulsed laser deposition (IR-PLD) on different surfaces were investigated in order to study the influence of the substrate, orientation, and thickness on their magnetic behavior. Different single crystal (001)-oriented substrates, i.e., SrTiO3(001), MgAl2O4(001) and MgO(001), have been used for the preparation of epitaxial Fe3O4(001) films. By comparison, polycrystalline magnetite films were obtained on both single crystal Al2O3(0001) and amorphous Si/SiO2 substrates. The thickness has been varied between 50 - 400 nm. All fil…
Tungsten trioxide is a versatile material with widespread applications ranging from electrochromic and optoelectronic devices to water splitting and catalysis of chemical reactions. For technological applications, thin films of WO3 are particularly appealing, taking advantage from high surface-to-volume ratio and tunable physical properties. However, the growth of stoichiometric, crystalline thin films is challenging because the deposition conditions are very sensitive to the formation of oxygen vacancies. In this work, we show how background oxygen pressure during pulsed laser deposition can …
The use of oxide materials in oxide electronics requires their controlled epitaxial growth. Recently, it was shown that Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) allows to monitor the growth of oxide thin films even at high oxygen pressure. Here, we report the sub-unit cell molecular or block layer growth of the oxide materials Sr2RuO4, MgO, and magnetite using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) from stoichiometric targets. Whereas for perovskites such as SrTiO3 or doped LaMnO3 a single RHEED intensity oscillation is found to correspond to the growth of a single unit cell, in materials wh…
Epitaxial perovskite (110) oriented SrIrO3 (SIO) thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on (110) oriented DyScO3 (DSO) substrates with various film thickness t (2 nm < t < 50 nm). All the films were produced with stoichiometric composition, orthorhombic phase, and with high crystallinity. The nearly perfect in-plane lattice matching of DSO with respect to SIO and same symmetry result in a full epitaxial inplane alignment, i.e., the c-axis of DSO and SIO are parallel to each other with only slightly enlarged d110 out-of-plane lattice spacing (+0.38%) due to the small in-plane compress…
Methane (CH_4) gas sensing properties of novel vanadium dioxide (VO_2) nanostructured films is reported for the first time. The single phase nanostructures are synthesized by pulsed dc-magnetron sputtering of V target followed by oxidation in O_2 atmosphere at 550 ^oC. The partial pressure of O_2 is controlled to obtain stoichiometric VO_2 with the samples showing rutile monoclinic crystalline symmetry and regions of rod shaped nano-architectures. These nanostructured films exhibit a reversible semiconductor to metal transition in the temperature range of 60-70 ^oC. Gas sensing experiments are…
High entropy carbides (HECs) are a promising new class of ultra-high temperature ceramics that could provide novel material solutions for leading edges of hypersonic vehicles, which can reach temperatures above 3500C and experience extreme thermal gradients. Although the mechanical and thermal properties of HECs have been studied extensively at room temperature, few works have examined HEC properties at high temperatures or considered these materials' responses to thermal shock. In this work, we measure the thermal conductivity of a five-cation HEC up to 1200C. We find that thermal conductivit…
Heteroepitaxial growth of BaSnO$_3$ (BSO) and Ba$_{1-x}$La$_x$SnO$_3$ (x = 7 %) (LBSO) thin films on different perovskite single crystal (SrTiO$_3$ (001) and SmScO$_3$ (110)) substrates has been achieved by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) under optimized deposition conditions. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the films on either of these substrates are relaxed due to the large mismatch and present a high degree of crystallinity with narrow rocking curves and smooth surface morphology while analytical quantification by proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE) confirms the stoichiometric L…
Biaxially textured LuNi2BC thin films with Tc up to 15.8 K and a residual resistivity ratio up to 15 have been prepared. The films were deposited on MgO(110) substrates using pulsed laser deposition from a stoichiometric target. Via the precise control of the deposition rate, a biaxial texture is favored within a broad range of the deposition temperature. The full epitaxial relationship between the borocarbide film, the \luo interface layer and the substrate is (110)[001]MgO II (110)[001]Lu2O3 II (001)[100]LuNi2B2C. A very sharp in--plane alignment of about 1\textdegree and an out--of--plane o…
