Simple image rotations significantly reduce the accuracy of deep neural networks. Moreover, training with all possible rotations increases the data set, which also increases the training duration. In this work, we address trainable rotation invariant convolutions as well as the construction of nets, since fully connected layers can only be rotation invariant with a one-dimensional input. On the one hand, we show that our approach is rotationally invariant for different models and on different public data sets. We also discuss the influence of purely rotational invariant features on accuracy. The rotationally adaptive convolution models presented in this work are more computationally intensive than normal convolution models. Therefore, we also present a depth wise separable approach with radial convolution. Link to CUDA code https://atreus.informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/seafile/d/8e2ab8c3fdd444e1a135/

We present an interpretation of Inception modules in convolutional neural networks as being an intermediate step in-between regular convolution and the depthwise separable convolution operation (a depthwise convolution followed by a pointwise convolution). In this light, a depthwise separable convolution can be understood as an Inception module with a maximally large number of towers. This observation leads us to propose a novel deep convolutional neural network architecture inspired by Inception, where Inception modules have been replaced with depthwise separable convolutions. We show that th…
Remote sensing image retrieval (RSIR) is the process of ranking database images depending on the degree of similarity compared to the query image. In this work, we introduce a novel method for retrieving aerial images by merging group convolution with attention mechanism and metric learning, resulting in robustness to rotational variations. For video and volumetric data understanding, 3D convolution layers are widely used in deep learning, however, at the cost of increasing computation and training time. Recent works seek to replace the 3D convolution layer with convolution blocks, e.g. structured combinations of 2D and 1D convolution layers. In this paper, we propose a novel convolution block, Parallel Separable 3D Convolution (PmSCn), which applies m parallel streams of n 2D and one 1D convolution layers along different dimensions. We first mathematically justify the need of parallel streams (Pm) to replace a single 3D convolut…
Rotated object detection is a challenging issue of computer vision field. Loss of spatial information and confusion of parametric order have been the bottleneck for rotated detection accuracy. By proposing the orientation-sensitive heatmap, OSKDet could learn the shape and direction of rotated target implicitly and has stronger modeling capabilities for target representation, which imp…
Deep learning based 3D stereo networks give superior performance compared to 2D networks and conventional stereo methods. However, this improvement in the performance comes at the cost of increased computational complexity, thus making these networks non-practical for the real-world applications. Specifically, these networks use 3D convolutions as a major work horse to refine and regress disparities. In this work first, we show that these 3D convolutions in stereo networks consume up to 94% of overall network operations and act as a major bottleneck. Next, we propose a set of "plug-&-run" sepa…

A rooted tree is used to represent human pose by introducing person centroid as the root which connects to all body joints directly or hierarchically. Two branches of sub-networks are used to pre…
As deep learning (DL) is being rapidly pushed to edge computing, researchers invented various ways to make inference computation more efficient on mobile/IoT devices, such as network pruning, parameter compression, and etc. Quantization, as one of the key approaches, can effectively offload GPU, and make it possible to deploy DL on fixed-point pipeline. Unfortunately, not all existing networks design are friendly to quantization. For example, the popular lightweight MobileNetV1, while it successfully reduces parameter size and computation latency with separable convolution, our experiment show…

Depthwise separable convolution has shown great efficiency in network design, but requires time-consuming training procedure with full training-set available. This paper first analyzes the mathematical relationship between regular convolutions and depthwise separable convolutions, and proves that the former one could be approximated with the latter one in closed form. We show depthwise separable convolutions are principal components of regular convolutions. And then we propose network decoupling (ND), a training-free method to accelerate convolutional neural networks (CNNs) by transferring pre…
Standard video frame interpolation methods first estimate optical flow between input frames and then synthesize an intermediate frame guided by motion. Recent approaches merge these two steps into a single convolution process by convolving input frames with spatially adaptive kernels that account for motion and re-sampling simultaneously. These methods require large kernels to handle large motion, which limits the number of pixels whose kernels can be estimated at once due to the large memory demand. To address this problem, this paper formulates frame interpolation as local separable convolut…

An increasing number of models require the control of the spectral norm of convolutional layers of a neural network. While there is an abundance of methods for estimating and enforcing upper bounds on those during training, they are typically costly in either memory or time. In this work, we introduce a very simple method for spectral normalization of depthwise separable convolutions, which introduces negligible computational and memory overhead. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on image classification tasks using standard architectures like MobileNetV2.

One of the practical choices for making a lightweight semantic segmentation model is to combine a depth-wise separable convolution with a dilated convolution. However, the simple combination of these two methods results in an over-simplified operation which causes severe performance degradation due to loss of information contained in the feature map. To resolve this problem, we propose a new block called Concentrated-Comprehensive Convolution (C3) which applies the asymmetric convolutions before the depth-wise separable dilated convolution to compensate for the information loss due to dilated …
