NGC 5548 was recently monitored intensively from NIR to X-rays as part of the STORM campaign. Its disc emission was found to lag behind the observed X-rays, while the measured time lag was increasing with wavelength. These results are consistent with the assumption that short term variability in AGN emission is driven by the X-ray illumination of the accretion disc. In this work, we studied the power spectrum of UV/optical and X-ray emission of NGC 5548, using the data of the STORM campaign as well as previous Swift data, in order to investigate the relation between the UV/optical and X-ray variability and to examine its consistency with the above picture. We demonstrate that even the power spectrum results are compatible with a standard disc being illuminated by X-rays, with low accretion rates, but the details are not entirely consistent with the results from the modelling of the "τ vs λ" relation. The differences indicate that the inner disc might be covered by a "warm corona" which does not allow the detection of UV/optical emission from the inner disc. Finally, we found strong evidence that the UV emission of NGC 5548 is not stationary.

The central regions of galaxies harbouring active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be quite complex, especially at high activity, presenting, besides variability, a variety of phenomena related, e.g. to ionization/excitation mechanisms. A detailed study is necessary in order to understand better those objects. For that reason, we performed a multiwavelength analysis of the nuclear region of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 7314, using an optical data cube obtained with the Integral Field Unit from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, together with Hubble Space Telescope images, X-ray data from the XMM…
NGC 3115 is the nearest galaxy hosting a billion solar mass black hole and is also a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN). X-ray observations of this LLAGN are able to spatially resolve the hot gas within the sphere of gravitational influence of the supermassive black hole. These observations make NGC 3115 an important testbed for black hole accretion theory in galactic nuclei since they constrain the outer boundary conditions of the hot accretion flow. We present a compilation of the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) of the nucleus of NGC 3115 from radio to X-rays. …
GALEX detected a significant fraction of early-type galaxies showing Far-UV bright structures. These features suggest the occurrence of recent star formation episodes. We aim at understanding their evolutionary path[s] and the mechanisms at the origin of their UV-bright structures. We investigate with a multi-lambda approach 11 early-types selected because of their nearly passive stage of evolution in the nuclear region. The paper, second of a series, focuses on the comparison between UV features detected by Swift-UVOT, tracing recent star formation, and the galaxy optical structure mapping ol…
We present a multiwavelength study of the NGC 281 complex which contains the young cluster IC 1590 at the center, using deep wide-field optical UBVI_c photometry, slitless spectroscopy along with archival data sets in the near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray. The extent of IC 1590 is estimated to be ~6.5 pc. The cluster region shows a relatively small amount of differential reddening. The majority of the identified young stellar objects (YSOs) are low mass PMS stars having age <1-2 Myr and mass 0.5-3.5 M_\odot. The slope (Γ) of the mass function for IC 1590, in the mass range 2 < M/M_\odot \le 54, is…
Most active supermassive black holes (SMBH) in present-day galaxies are underfed and consist of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN). They have multiwavelength broadband spectral energy distributions (SED) dominated by non-thermal processes which are quite different from those of the brighter, more distant quasars. Modelling the observed SEDs of LLAGNs is currently challenging, given the large computational expenses required. In this work, we used machine learning (ML) methods to generate model SEDs and fit sparse observations of LLAGNs. Our ML model consisted of a neural network and …
We study the extended nuclear emission of the starburst galaxy NGC 1365. A weak obscured AGN and a strong starburst both contribute to the observed X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio emission in the inner 2kpc. The X-ray emission is spatially resolved, allowing comparison with multiwavelength data that highlights the structures dominating the nuclear region: the AGN, the nuclear spiral, the circumnuclear starburst ring, and nuclear outflow. The ultrasoft X-ray emission below 0.5keV is spatially coincident with the conical outflow traced by higher excitation optical emission lines like [O III]…
In this paper, we report a detailed study with a variety of data from optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and radio telescopes of the nuclear region of the galaxy NGC 613 with the aim of understanding its complexity. We detected an extended stellar emission in the nucleus that, at first, appears to be, in the optical band, two stellar nuclei separated by a stream of dust. The active galactic nucleus (AGN) is identified as a variable point-like source between these two stellar components. There is a central hard X-ray emission and an extended soft X-ray emission that closely coincides with the ioniz…
(Abridged) Based on UV to X-ray and radio to UV flux ratios, some argue that low ionization emission line regions (LINERs) and low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) are a scaled-down version of their more luminous predecessors Seyfert galaxies. Others, based on the lack of X-ray short (hours) time-scale variability, the non-detection of an iron line at 6.4 keV, and the faint UV emission, suggest the truncation of the classical thin accretion disk in the inner regions of the AGN where a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) structure forms. We investigate the LINER-Seyfert connection by studying t…
We presented the multiwavelength analysis of a heavily obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 449. We first constructed a broadband X-ray spectrum using the latest NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data. Its column density ($\simeq 10^{24} \rm{cm}^{-2}$) and photon index ($Γ\simeq 2.4$) were reliably obtained by analyzing the broadband X-ray spectrum. However, the scattering fraction and the intrinsic X-ray luminosity could not be well constrained. Combined with the information obtained from the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum and spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, we derived its intrinsic …
We present results of the recent low-frequency radio observations of a tight galaxy pair Arp 143 at 234 and 612 MHz. These data are analysed together with the archive data at 1490, 4860, 8440, and 14940 MHz. From the analysis of the radio emission we derive constraints on the age of the radio emitting structures as well as on the properties of their magnetic field. We show that the collisional ring of NGC 2445 hosts strong magnetic fields (reaching 12 $μ$G in its northwestern part) manifesting as a steep--spectrum, nonthermal radiation at radio frequencies. The spectral age of this structure i…
We present preliminary results from a multi-wavelength study of a merger candidate, NGC3801, hosting a young FR I radio galaxy, with a Z-shaped structure. Analysing archival data from the VLA, we find two HI emission blobs on either side of the host galaxy, suggesting a 30 kpc sized rotating gas disk aligned with stellar rotation, but rotating significantly faster than the stars. Broad, faint, blue-shifted absorption wing and an HI absorption clump associated with the shocked shell around the eastern lobe are also seen, possibly due to an jet-driven outflow. While 8.0 um dust and PAH emission,…
We have combined resolved stellar photometry from Hubble Space Telescope (\emph{HST}), \emph{Spitzer}, and \emph{Gaia} to identify red supergiant (RSG) candidates in NGC~6946, based on their colors, proper motions, visual morphologies, and spectral energy distributions. We start with a large sample of 17,865 RSG candidates based solely on \emph{HST} near-infrared photometry. We then chose a small sample of 385 of these candidates with Spitzer matches for more detailed study. Using evolutionary models and isochrones, we isolate a space where RSGs would be found in our photometry catalogs. We th…
We present deep and high-resolution (FWHM ~ 0.4 arcsec) near-infrared (NIR) imaging observations of the NGC 7538 IRS 1-3 region (in JHK bands), and IRS 9 region (in HK bands) using the 8.2m Subaru telescope. The NIR analysis is complemented with GMRT low-frequency observations at 325, 610, and 1280 MHz, molecular line observations of H13CO+ (J=1-0), and archival Chandra X-ray observations. Using the 'J-H/H-K' diagram, 144 Class II and 24 Class I young stellar object (YSO) candidates are identified in the IRS 1-3 region. Further analysis using 'K/H-K' diagram yields 145 and 96 red sources in th…
We present a comprehensive study of the total X-ray emission from the colliding galaxy pair NGC2207/IC2163, based on Chandra, Spitzer, and GALEX data. We detect 28 ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), 7 of which were not detected previously due to X-ray variability. Twelve sources show significant long-term variability, with no correlated spectral changes. Seven sources are transient candidates. One ULX coincides with an extremely blue star cluster (B-V = -0.7). We confirm that the global relation between the number and luminosity of ULXs and the integrated star formation rate (SFR) of the hos…
We present a high-resolution, multi-wavelength study of the massive protostellar cluster NGC 6334I(N) that combines new spectral line data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and VLA with a reanalysis of archival VLA continuum data, 2MASS and Spitzer images. As shown previously, the brightest 1.3 mm source SMA1 contains substructure at subarcsecond resolution, and we report the first detection of SMA1b at 3.6 cm along with a new spatial component at 7 mm (SMA1d). We find SMA1 (aggregate of sources a, b, c, and d) and SMA4 to be comprised of free-free and dust components, while SMA6 shows only d…
We report the discovery of a ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX; CXO J133815.6+043255) in NGC 5252. This ULX is an off-nuclear point-source, which is 22$^{\prime\prime}$ away from the center of NGC 5252, and has an X-ray luminosity of 1.5 $\times$ $10^{40}$erg s$^{-1}$. It is one of the rare examples of ULX, which exhibits clear counterparts in radio, optical, UV bands. Follow-up optical spectrum of the ULX shows strong emission lines. The redshift of [O III] emission line coincides with the systematic velocity of NGC 5252, suggesting the ULX is gravitationally bound to NGC 5252. The flux of [O I…
To elucidate the location, physical conditions, mass outflow rate, and kinetic luminosity of the outflow from the active nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 we used coordinated ultraviolet and X-ray spectral observations in 2012 to follow up our lengthier campaign conducted in 2009. We observed Mrk 509 with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on 2012-09-03 and 2012-10-11 coordinated with X-ray observations using the High Energy Transmission Grating on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our far-ultraviolet spectra used grating G140L on COS to cover waveleng…
Is the turbulence in cluster-forming regions internally driven by stellar outflows or the consequence of a large-scale turbulent cascade? We address this question by studying the turbulent energy spectrum in NGC 1333. Using synthetic 13CO maps computed with a snapshot of a supersonic turbulence simulation, we show that the VCS method of Lazarian and Pogosyan provides an accurate estimate of the turbulent energy spectrum. We then apply this method to the 13CO map of NGC 1333 from the COMPLETE database. We find the turbulent energy spectrum is a power law, E(k) k^-beta, in the range of scales 0.…
We have measured the HI power spectrum of the nearly face-on spiral galaxy NGC 1058 from radio-interferometric observations using a visibility based estimator. The power spectrum is well fitted by two different power laws $P(U)=AU^α$, one with $α=- 2.5\pm 0.6$ at small length-scales $(600 {\rm pc} {\rm to} 1.5 {\rm kpc})$ and another with $α=- 1.0\pm 0.2$ at large length-scales $(1.5 {\rm kpc} {\rm to} 10.0 {\rm kpc})$. We interpret this change in the slope of the power spectrum as a transition from 3D turbulence at small length-scales to 2D turbulence in the plane of the galaxy's disk at larg…

Spectra of the intermediate age star cluster NGC 1978 and the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 55 and NGC 3109 that span the 0.7 to 1.1um wavelength interval are discussed. The NGC 1978 spectra are used to examine stochastic effects on the integrated red light from an intermediate age cluster. The removal of either the brightest M giant or the brightest C star from the co-added NGC 1978 spectrum has minor effects on the equivalent withs of the Ca triplet. The most robust signature of C stars in the integrated cluster spectrum at these wavelengths is the CN band head near 0.79um. The equivalent wid…
The observed spectra of 9 pulsars for which multiwavelength data are available from radio to $X$- or $γ$-ray bands (Crab, Vela, Geminga, B0656+14, B1055-52, B1509-58, B1706-44, B1929+10, and B1951+32) are compared with the spectrum of the radiation generated by an extended polarization current whose distribution pattern rotates faster than light {\it in vacuo}. It is shown that by inferring the values of two free parameters from observational data (values that are consistent with those of plasma frequency and electron cyclotron frequency in a conventional pulsar magnetosphere), and by adjustin…
The rotational spectrum of the most stable conformer of ethylene glycol (HO(CH$_2$)$_2$OH) has been recorded between 360-890 GHz using a frequency-modulation sub-millimeter spectrometer. The refinement and extension of the spectroscopic parameters over previous efforts provides predicted catalog frequencies for ethylene glycol with sufficient accuracy for comparison to high-frequency astronomical data. The improvement in the cataloged line positions, and the need for improved accuracy enabled by high-frequency laboratory work, is demonstrated by an analysis of ethylene glycol emission at 890 G…
The detailed study of nuclear regions of galaxies is important because it can help understanding the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback mechanisms, the connections between the nuclei and their host galaxies, and ultimately the galaxy formation processes. We present the analysis of an optical data cube of the central region of the galaxy NGC 2442, obtained with the integral field unit (IFU) of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS). We also performed a multiwavelength analysis, with Chandra data, XMM--Newton and NuSTAR spectra, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The analysis reve…
A preliminary VLT-UVES spectrum of NGC 6302 (Casassus et al. 2002, MN), which hosts one of the hottest PN nuclei known (Teff ~ 220000 K; Wright et al. 2011, MN), has been recently analysed by means of X-SSN, a spectrum synthesis code for nebulae (Morisset and Péquignot). Permitted recombination lines from highly-ionized species are detected/identified for the first time in a PN, and some of them probably for the first time in (Astro)Physics. The need for a homogeneous, high signal-to-noise UVES spectrum for NGC 6302 is advocated.
We present a multiwavelength (ultraviolet, infrared, optical and CO) study of a set of luminous HII regions in M33: NGC 604, NGC 595, NGC 592, NGC 588 and IC131. We study the emission distribution in the interiors of the HII regions to investigate the relation between the dust emission at 8 micron and 24 micron and the location of the massive stars and gas. We find that the 24 micron emission is closely related to the location of the ionized gas, while the 8 micron emission is more related to the boundaries of the molecular clouds consistently with its expected association with photodissociati…
We report on a multiwavelength survey of a sample of 42 flat-spectrum radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RLNLS1s). This is the largest known sample of this type of active galactic nucleus (AGN) to date. We found that 17% of sources were detected at high-energy gamma rays (E>100 MeV), and 90% at X-rays (0.3-10 keV). The masses of the central black holes are in the range $\sim 10^{6-8}M_{\odot}$, smaller than the values of blazars. The disk luminosities are about 1-49% of the Eddington value, with one outlier at 0.3%, comparable with the luminosities observed in flat-spectrum radio quasa…
We present multiwavelength observations and a model for flat spectrum radio quasar NVSS J141922-083830, originally classified as a blazar candidate of unknown type (BCU II object) in the Third Fermi-LAT AGN Catalog (3LAC). Relatively bright flares (>3 magnitudes) were observed on 21 February 2015 (MJD 57074) and 8 September 2018 (MJD 58369) in the optical band with the MASTER Global Robotic Net (MASTER-Net) telescopes. Optical spectra obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) on 1 March 2015 (MJD 57082), during outburst, and on 30 May 2017 (MJD 57903), during quiescence, showed…
We report on a long-lasting, elevated gamma-ray flux state from VER J0521+211 observed by VERITAS, MAGIC, and Fermi-LAT in 2013 and 2014. The peak integral flux above 200 GeV measured with the nightly-binned light curve is $(8.8 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-7} \;\text{ph}\;\text{m}^{-2}\; \text{s}^{-1}$, or ~37% of the Crab Nebula flux. Multiwavelength observations from X-ray, UV, and optical instruments are also presented. A moderate correlation between the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes was observed, and the X-ray spectrum appeared harder when the flux was higher. Using the gamma-ray spectrum and fo…
We summarize results of a search for X-ray-emitting binary stars in the massive globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) using Chandra and HST. ACIS-I imaging reveals 180 X-ray sources, of which we estimate that 45-70 are associated with the cluster. We present 40 identifications, most of which we have obtained using ACS/WFC imaging with HST that covers the central 10'x10' of the cluster. Roughly half of the optical IDs are accreting binary stars, including 9 very faint blue stars that we suggest are cataclysmic variables near the period limit. Another quarter comprise a variety of different…
The early-type galaxy NGC 3115, at a distance of 10.2 Mpc, hosts the nearest billion-solar-mass black hole. Wong et al. recently inferred a substantial Bondi accretion rate near the black hole. Bondi-like accretion is thought to fuel outflows, which can be traced through their radio emission. This paper reports the discovery of a radio nucleus in NGC 3115, with a diameter less that 0.17 arcsec (8.4 pc), a luminosity at 8.5 GHz of 3.1 x 10^35 ergs/s and a flat spectrum (alpha = -0.23+/-0.20, flux density ~ frequency^alpha). The radio source coincides with the galaxy's photocenter and candidate …
The Seyfert galaxy NGC 5515 has double-peaked narrow-line emission in its optical spectrum, and it has been suggested that this could indicate that it has two active nuclei. We observed the source with high resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at two radio frequencies, reduced archival Very Large Array data, and re-analysed its optical spectrum. We detected a single, compact radio source at the position of NGC 5515, with no additional radio emission in its vicinity. The optical spectrum of the source shows that the blue and red components of the double-peaked lines have very sim…
The high redhsift blazars powered by supermassive black holes with masses exceeding $10^9\:M_\odot$ have the highest jet power and luminosity and are important probes to test the physics of relativistic jets at the early epochs of the Universe. We present a multi-frequency spectral and temporal study of high redshift blazar PKS 0537-286 by analyzing data from Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR Swift XRT and UVOT. Although the time averaged $γ$-ray spectrum of the source is relatively soft (indicating the high-energy emission peak is below the GeV range), several prominent flares were observed when the spectrum…
