Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, coupled to metal plasmonic nanocavities, have recently emerged as new platforms for strong light-matter interactions. These systems are expected to have nonlinear optical properties that will enable them to be used as entangled photon sources, compact wave-mixing devices, and other elements for classical and quantum photonic technologies. Here we report the first experimental investigation of the nonlinear properties of these strongly coupled systems, by observing second harmonic generation from a WSe2 monolayer strongly coupled to a single gold nanorod. The pump frequency dependence of the second harmonic signal displays a pronounced splitting that can be explained by a coupled oscillator model with second-order nonlinearities. Rigorous numerical simulations utilizing a nonperturbative nonlinear hydrodynamic model of conduction electrons support this interpretation and reproduce experimental results. Our study thus lays the groundwork for understanding the nonlinear properties of strongly coupled nanoscale systems.
We demonstrate the digital electric field induced switching of plasmonic nanorods between 1 and 0 orthogonal aligned states using an electro-optic fluid fiber component. We show by digitally switching the nanorods, that thermal rotational diffusion of the nanorods can be circumvented, demonstrating an approach to achieve submicrosecond switching times. We also show, from an initial unaligned state, that the nanorods can be aligned into the applied electric field direction in 110 nanoseconds. The high-speed digital switching of plasmonic nanorods integrated into an all-fiber optical component m…
A novel numerical methodology has been developed, which makes possible to optimize arbitrary emitting dipole and plasmonic nano-resonator configuration with an arbitrary objective function. By selecting quantum efficiency as the objective function that has to be maximized at preselected Purcell factor criteria, optimization of plasmonic nanorod based configurations has been realized to enhance fluorescence of NV and SiV color centers in diamond. Gold and silver nanorod based configurations have been optimized to enhance excitation and emission separately, as well as both processes simultaneous…
Optical activity is a fundamental phenomenon originating from the chiral nature of crystals and molecules. While intrinsic chiroptical responses of ordinary chiral materials to circularly polarized light are relatively weak, they can be enhanced by specially tailored nanostructures. Here, nanorod metamaterials, comprising a dense array of vertically aligned gold nanorods, is shown to provide significant enhancement of the circular dichroism response of an embedded material. A nanorod composite, acting as an artificial uniaxial crystal, is filled with chiral mercury sulfide nanocrystals embedde…
Plasmonic dark modes are pure near-field resonances since their dipole moments are vanishing in far field. These modes are particularly interesting to enhance nonlinear light-matter interaction at the nanometer scale because radiative losses are mitigated therefore increasing the intrinsic lifetime of the resonances. However, the excitation of dark modes by standard far field approaches is generally inefficient because the symmetry of the electromagnetic near-field distribution has a poor overlap with the excitation field. Here, we demonstrate the selective optical excitation of bright and dar…
Plasmonically enhanced fluorescence is a widely studied and applied phenomenon, however only a comparative theoretical and experimental analyses of coupled fluorophores and plasmonic nanoresonators makes it possible to uncover, how this phenomenon can be controlled. A numerical optimization method was applied to design configurations that are capable of resulting in an enhancement of excitation and emission, moreover of both phenomena simultaneously in coupled Cy5 dye molecule and gold nanorod systems. Parametric sensitivity studies revealed, how the fluorescence enhancement depends on the mol…
Hyperbolic plasmonic metamaterials provide numerous opportunities for designing unusual linear and nonlinear optical properties. We show that the modal overlap of fundamental and second-harmonic light in an anisotropic plasmonic metamaterial slab results in the broadband enhancement of radiated second-harmonic intensity by up to 2 orders of magnitudes for TM- and TE-polarized fundamental light, compared to a smooth Au film under TM-polarised illumination. The results open up possibilities to design tuneable frequency-doubling metamaterial with the goal to overcome limitations associated with c…
While the thermal and electromagnetic properties of plasmonic nanostructures are well understood, nanoscale thermometry still presents an experimental and theoretical challenge. Plasmonic structures can confine electromagnetic energy at the nanoscale, resulting in local, inhomogeneous, controllable heating. But reading out the temperature with nanoscale precision using optical techniques poses a difficult challenge. Here we report on the optical thermometry of individual gold nanorod trimers that exhibit multiple wavelength-dependent plasmon modes resulting in measurably different local temper…
Plasmonic nanoparticles resonantly couple to and confine light below the diffraction limit. This mechanism has enabled a modern renaissance in optical materials, with potential applications ranging from sensing and circuitry to renewable energies and medicines. However, these plasmonic materials are typically constrained to dilute liquids or solid two-dimensional surfaces, thereby limiting their possibilities. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a plasmonic aerosol by transitioning liquid suspensions of gold nanorods into the gas phase and simultaneously measuring their optical spectra. By mea…
The measurement and control of the temperature in microscopic systems, which are increasingly required in diverse applications, are fundamentally important. Yet, the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) temperature distribution in microscopic systems has not been demonstrated. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the measurement of the 3D temperature distribution by exploiting the temperature dependency of the refractive index (RI). Measurement of the RI distribution of water makes it possible to quantitatively obtain its 3D temperature distribution above a glass substrate coat…
We theoretically investigate the plasmonic coupling in heterogenous Al-Ag nanorod dimer. A pronounced Fano dip is found in the extinction spectrum produced by the destructive interference between the bright dipole mode from a short Al nanorod and the dark quadrupole mode from a long Ag nanorod nearby. This Fano resonance can be widely tuned in both wavelength and amplitude by varying the rod dimensions, the separation distance and the local dielectric environment. The Al-Ag heterogeneous nanorod dimer shows a high sensitivity to the surrounding environment with a local surface plasmon resonanc…
In nano-optics, a formidable challenge remains in precise transport of a single optical nano-object along a programmed and routed path toward a predefined destination. Molecular motors in living cells that can walk directionally along microtubules have been the inspiration for realizing artificial molecular walkers. Here we demonstrate an active plasmonic system, in which a plasmonic nanorod can execute directional, progressive and reverse nanoscale walking on two or three-dimensional DNA origami.Such a walker comprises an anisotropic gold nanorod as its body and discrete DNA strands as its fe…
Strong Stokes and anti-Stokes one-photon luminescence from single gold nanorods is measured in experiments. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions are in strong correlation. Our experimental observation discovered a coherent process in light emission from single gold nanorods. We present a theoretical mode, based on the concept of cavity resonance, for consistently understanding both Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence. Our theory is in good agreement of all our measurements.
Longer near-infrared wavelengths provide better penetration depth in biological tissues, so these are useful for plasmonic photothermal cancer therapeutics. In the context of nanoparticles for such applications, the absorption can be tuned for longer NIR wavelengths. However, on increasing the size of the nanoparticle, the scattering is enhanced and thus is not suitable for plasmonic therapeutics. Therefore, to overcome this issue, different types of small gold nanorods were synthesized and converted into stable aggregates to red-shift the plasmonic resonance wavelength to longer near-infrared…
Quantum aspects, such as electron tunneling between closely separated metallic nanoparticles, are crucial for understanding the plasmonic response of nanoscale systems. We explore quantum effects on the response of the conductively coupled metallic nanoparticle dimer. This is realized by stretching a nanorod, which leads to the formation of a narrowing atomic contact between the two nanorod ends. Based on first-principles time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations, we find a discontinuous evolution of the plasmonic response as the nanorod is stretched. This is especially pronounced …
The influence of the orientation of gold nanorods in different assemblies has been investigated using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation method. To understand the relative orientation, we vary the size and angle in dimer geometries. Significant effects of plasmon coupling emerged in longitudinal resonances having end-to-end configurations of gold nanorods. The effect of orientational plasmon coupling in dimers gives rise to both bonding and anti-bonding plasmon modes. Effects of various geometries like primary monomer, dimer, trimer, and tetramer structures have been explored …
We show how the elusive toroidal dipole moment appears as a radiative excitation eigenmode in a metamolecule resonator that is formed by pairs of plasmonic nanorods. We analyze one such nanorod configuration - a toroidal metamolecule. We find that the radiative interactions in the toroidal metamolecule can be qualitatively represented by a theoretical model based on an electric point dipole arrangement. Both a finite-size rod model and the point dipole approximation demonstrate how the toroidal dipole moment is subradiant and difficult to excite by incident light. By means of breaking the geom…
In this paper we present an analytical solution for the eigenmodes and corresponding electric field of a composite system made of a nanorod in the vicinity of a plasmonic semi-infinite metallic system. To be specific, we choose Silver as the material for both the nanorod and the semi-infinite metal. The system is composed of two sub-systems with different symmetries: the rod has symmetry, while the interface has a rectangular one. Using a boundary integral method, proposed by Eyges, we are able to compute analytically the integrals that sew together the two systems. In the end, the problem is …
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhanc…
Raman spectroscopic characterization of crater walls formed upon single-shot high energy femtosecond laser irradiation of dimethacrylate polymer doped with plasmonic gold nanorods
We propose and describe plasmonic nanomaterials with unique optical properties. These nanostructured materials strongly attenuate light in a broad wavelength interval ranged from 400 nm to 5 um but exhibit a narrow transparency window centered at a given wavelength. The main elements are nanorods and nano-crosses of variable sizes. The nanomaterial can be designed as a solution, nanocomposite film, metastructure or aerosol. The principle of the formation of the transparency window in the abroad extinction spectrum is based on the narrow lines of longitudinal plasmons of single nanorods and nan…
Sensing lower molecular weight in a diluted solution using a label-free biosensor is challenging and requires a miniaturized plasmonic structure, e.g., a vertical Au nanorod (AuNR) array based metamaterials. The sensitivity of a sensor mainly depends on transducer properties and hence for instance, the AuNR array geometry requires optimization. Physical vapour deposition methods (e.g., sputtering and e-beam evaporation) require a vacuum environment to deposit Au, which is costly, time-consuming, and thickness-limited. On the other hand, chemical deposition, i.e., electroplating deposit higher …
Plasmonic nanoresonators of core-shell composition and nanorod shape were optimized to tune their absorption cross-section maximum to the central wavelength of a short pulse. Their distribution along a pulse-length scaled target was optimized to maximize the absorptance with the criterion of minimal absorption difference in between neighbouring layers. Successive approximation of layer distributions made it possible to ensure almost uniform deposited energy distribution up until the maximal overlap of two counter-propagating pulses. Based on the larger absorptance and smaller uncertainty in ab…

Design and Analysis of Plasmonic-Nanorod-Enhanced Lead-Free Inorganic Perovskite/Silicon Heterojunction Tandem Solar Cell Exceeding the Shockley-Queisser Limit
Proximity of the metal nanoparticles enhance the plasmonic coupling and shifts the resonance. This article presents a numerical study of the photothermal effect in aggregates of small gold nanorods considering the ordered as well as random aggregates. In the ordered aggregates, there is lateral coupling which causes blueshifts in the plasmonic resonance, while in the random aggregates there are redshifts in the plasmonic resonance. The plasmon response of latter could be tailored up to the second infrared biological therapeutic window. It has been observed that the aggregates show higher absor…
In this work, we investigate the generation of second harmonic light by gold nanorods and demonstrate that the collected nonlinear intensity depends upon a phase interplay between different modes available in the nanostructure. By recording the backward and forward emitted second harmonic signals from nanorods with various lengths, we find that the maximum nonlinear signal emitted in the forward and backward directions is not obtained for the same nanorod length. We confirm the experimental results with the help of full-wave computations done with a surface integral equation method. These obse…
Highly efficient information processing in brain is based on processing and memory components called synapses, whose output is dependent on the history of the signals passed through them. Here we have developed an artificial synapse with both electrical and optical memory effects using reactive tunnel junctions based on plasmonic nanorods. In an electronic realization, the electrons tunneled into plasmonic nanorods under low bias voltage are harvested to write information into the tunnel junctions via hot-electron-mediated chemical reactions with the environment. In an optical realization, the…
By tuning the radiative coupling of localized surface plasmons to diffracted orders, we demonstrate how stop-gaps in plasmonic crystals of nanorods may be opened and tuned. The stop-gap arises from the mutual coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs), which are collective resonances associated with counter-propagating surface polaritons. We present experimental results for three different nanorod arrays, where we show how the dispersion of SLRs can be controlled by modifying the size of the rods. Combining experiments with numerical simulations, we show how the properties of the stop-gap c…
It is challenging to strongly localize temperature in small volumes because heat transfer is a diffusive process. Here we show how to overcome this limitation using electrodynamic hot spots and interference effects in the regime of continuous-wave (CW) excitation. We introduce a set of figures of merit for the localization of temperature and for the efficiency of the plasmonic photo-thermal effect. Our calculations show that the temperature localization in a trimer nanoparticle assembly is a complex function of the geometry and sizes. Large nanoparticles in the trimer play the role of the nano…
Optical antennas link objects to light. Here, we analyze metal nanorod antennas as cavities with variable reflection coefficients to derive the interaction of dipolar transitions with radiation through the antenna modes. The presented analytical model accurately describes the complete emission process, and is summarized in a phase-matching equation. We show how antenna modes evolve as they become increasingly more bound, i.e. plasmonic. The results illustrate why efficient antennas should not be too plasmonic, and how subradiant even modes can evolve into weakly-interacting dark modes. Our des…
We demonstrate that almost 100 % of incident photons can interact with a monolayer of scatterers in a symmetrical environment. Nearly-perfect optical extinction through free-standing transparent nanorod arrays has been measured. The sharp spectral opacity window, in the form of a characteristic Fano resonance, arises from the coherent multiple scattering in the array. In addition, we show that nanorods made of absorbing material exhibit a 25-fold absorption enhancement per unit volume compared to unstructured thin film. These results open new perspectives for light management in high-Q, low vo…
We analyze a whispering gallery mode biosensor with a metallic nanorod bound to its surface. It is found that a localized surface plasmon resonance in the nanorod can reduce the optical mode volume of the resonator by as much as four orders of magnitude via a local enhancement of the electric field, thus improving the detection sensitivity. Optical frequency shifts as large as 15 MHz are predicted for typical proteins and, for typical experimental parameters, the biosensor is predicted to be limited by laser frequency noise, leading to a minimum detectable polarizability on the order of 10 cub…
The capability to dynamically control the nonlinear refractive index of plasmonic suspensions may enable innovative nonlinear sensing and signaling nanotechnologies. Here, we experimentally determine the effective nonlinear refractive index for gold nanorods suspended in an index matching oil aligned using electric fields, demonstrating an approach to modulate the nonlinear optical properties of the suspension. The nonlinear optical experiments were carried out using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer in a collimated beam configuration with a high repetition rate femtosecond laser. The sus…
Gold nanoparticle assemblies show a strong plasmonic response due to the combined effects of the individual nanoparticles' plasmon modes. Increasing the number of nanoparticles in structured assemblies leads to significant shifts in the optical and physical properties. We use Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations to analyze the electromagnetic response of structurally ordered gold nanorods in monomer and dimer configurations. The plasmonic coupling between nanorods in monomers or dimers configurations provides a unique technique for tuning the spectrum intensity, spatial distributio…
Although TMDC monolayers offer giant optical nonlinearity within few-angstrom thickness, it is still elusive to modulate and engineer the wavefront of nonlinear emissions. The grain size of high-quality monolayers also restricts possibilities of imparting inhomogeneous or gradient profiles of phases and amplitudes by classical light sources. Plasmonic nanosieves can support huge field enhancement and precise nonlinear phase control with hundred-nanometer pixel-level resolution, however they suffer from intrinsically weak nonlinear susceptibility. In nature, epoxy represents a strong glue whose…
The two-photon luminescence (TPL) of gold nanoparticles (NP) was shown to result from the excitation of hot carriers, the plasmonic NP resonances playing an important role both for plasmon enhanced absorption and plasmon enhanced emission. However, the exact parameters enabling to control or optimize the NP nonlinear luminescence still need to be understood in detail. In this paper, we report the two-photon excited photoluminescence of single gold nanorods exhibiting identical aspect ratio (close to 4) and thus identical plasmonic resonances, but increasing volumes V (707 <V< 160 103 nm3 i.e. …
Systems of closely-spaced resonators can be strongly coupled by interactions mediated by scattered electromagnetic fields. In large systems the resulting response has been shown to be more sensitive to these collective interactions than to the detailed structure of individual resonators. Attempts to describe such systems have resulted in point-dipole approximations to resonators that are computationally efficient for large resonator ensembles. Here we provide a detailed study for the validity of point dipole approximations in small systems of strongly coupled plasmonic nanorods, including the …

Aggregation of the nanoparticles is a natural phenomena due to various biological and physical parameters but these aggregates are highly unstable. If aggregates would have been stable then it might be useful for some biomedical applications. To study the optical properties and photothermal heat generation of stable aggregates of the metal nanopartilces, we present a forced synthesis of aggregates of small gold nanorods in a mixture of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). We synthesised hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) coated gold nanorods and then…
Optical response of silicon (SiV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancy diamond color centers coupled to silver and gold nanorod dimers was numerically inspected. Optimization of the coupled emitter - nanorod dimer configurations was performed to attain the highest possible fluorescence enhancement by enhancing the excitation and emission of color centers simultaneously through plasmonic antenna resonances. To minimize losses conditional optimization was realized by setting a criterion regarding the minimum quantum efficiency of the coupled system (cQE). Restricted symmetric and allowed asymmetric antenna…
We present a rigorous photonic mode model to describe the strong coupling between a monolayer of $\rm MoSe_2$ and a single gold nanoparticle. The onset of strong coupling is quantified by computing the three-dimensional hybrid quasinormal modes of the combined structure, allowing one to accurately model light-matter interactions without invoking the usual phenomenological theories of strong coupling. We explore the hybrid quasinormal modes as a function of gap size and temperature and find spectral splittings in the range of around 80-110 meV, with no fitting parameters for the material models…
Molecular chirality plays a crucial role in innumerable biological processes. The chirality of a molecule can typically be identified by its characteristic optical response, the circular dichroism (CD). CD signals have thus long been used to identify the state of molecules or to follow dynamic protein configurations. In recent years, the focus has moved towards plasmonic nanostructures, as they show potential for applications ranging from pathogen sensing to novel optical materials. The plasmonic coupling of the individual elements of such chiral metallic structures is a crucial prerequisite t…
We introduce an efficient computational scheme based on Macro Basis Function (MBF) method, to analyze the scattering of a plane wave by the V-shaped plasmonic optical nano-antennas. The polarization currents and the scattered fields for symmetric and anti-symmetric excitations are investigated. We investigate how the resonant frequency of the plasmonic V-shaped nanoantenna is tailored by engineering the geometrical parameters and by changing the polarization state of the incident plane wave. The computational model presented herein is faster by orders of magnitude than commercially available f…
The long-wavelength optical properties of a plasmonic crystal composed of gold nanorod particles have been studied. Because of the strong coupling between the incident light and vibrations of free electrons, bulk polariton excitation can be induced and a polaritonic stop band will be created. An analytical model has been established, which was confirmed by the numerical simulations. The similarity between the plasmonic and ionic crystals, as well as various optical properties, may be of both fundamental and practical interests.
In this work, we present a novel technique to directly measure the phase shift of the optical signal scattered by single plasmonic nanoparticles in a diffraction-limited laser focus. We accomplish this by equipping an inverted confocal microscope with a Michelson interferometer and scanning single nanoparticles through the focal volume while recording interferograms of the scattered and a reference wave for each pixel. For the experiments, lithographically prepared gold nanorods where used, since their plasmon resonances can be controlled via their aspect ratio. We have developed a theoretical…
The nonlinear processes of frequency conversion like second harmonic generation (SHG) usually obey certain selection rules, resulting from the preservation of different kind of physical quantities, e.g., the angular momentum. For SHG created by monolayer of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) like WS2, the valley-exciton locked selection rule predicts an SHG signal in the cross-polarization state. By combining plasmonic nanostructures with a monolayer of TMDC, a hybrid metasurface is realized which affects this nonlinear process due to an additional polarization conversion process. Here, …
The plasmon-mediated manipulation of light-matter interaction in two-dimensional atomically transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) critically depends on the design of plasmonic nanostructures to achieve the maximum optical field in TMDs. Here, a metal-isolator-metal Salisbury-type perfect absorber was fabricated to serve as a generator of the localized surface plasmons. The significant photoluminescence (PL) enhancement up to 60-fold was observed experimentally in the monolayer (ML) MoS2 on the top of this gold plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. Furthermore, the PL linear polarization can appro…
Nanostars (NSTs) are spiky nanocrystals with plasmonic hot spots. In this study, we show that strong electromagnetic fields localized in the nanostar tips are able to generate large numbers of energetic (hot) electrons, which can be used for photochemistry. To compute plasmonic nanocrystals with complex shapes, we develop a quantum approach based on the effect of surface generation of hot electrons. We then apply this approach to nanostars, nanorods and nanospheres. We found that that the plasmonic nanostars with multiple hot spots have the best characteristics for optical generation of hot el…
We investigate the process of the second harmonic generation by plasmonic nano-antennas that exhibit Fano-like resonances. A rigorous fully vectorial Maxwell-hydrodynamics approach is employed to directly calculate the second order susceptibilities as function of the pump frequency, considering a periodic array of nanodolmens comprised of three Au nanorods. The results of the numerical simulations demonstrate noticeable enhancement of the second harmonic efficiency by the antisymmetric mode. Additionally, a simple analytical model based on two coupled nonlinear oscillators is proposed. It is s…

Simple high-performance two-stage hybrid technique was developed for fabrication of different plasmonic nanostructures, including nanorods, nanorings, as well as more complex structures on glass substrates. In this technique a thin noble metal film on a dielectric substrate is irradiated by a tightly focused single nanosecond laser pulse and then the modified region is slowly polished by an accelerated argon ion (Ar+) beam. As a result, each nanosecond laser pulse locally modifies the initial metal film through initiation of fast melting and subsequent hydrodynamic processes, while the followi…
We study theoretically optical response of WS2 monolayer located near periodic metal nanostructured arrays in two and three dimensions. The emphasis of simulations is on the strong coupling regime of excitons supported by WS2 and surface plasmon-polaritons supported by various periodic plasmonic interfaces. It is demonstrated that a monolayer of WS2 placed in a close proximity of periodic arrays of either slits or holes results in a Rabi splitting of the corresponding surface plasmon-polariton resonance as revealed in calculated transmission and reflection spectra. The nonlinear regime, at whi…
We investigate the far-field optical resonances of individual dimer nanoantennas using confocal scattering spectroscopy. Experiments on a single-antenna array with varying arm lengths and interparticle gap sizes show large spectral shifts of the plasmon modes due to a combination of geometrical resonances and plasmon hybridization. All resonances are considerably broadened compared to those of small nanorods in the quasistatic limit, which we attribute to a greatly enhanced radiative damping of the antenna modes. The scattering spectra are compared with rigorous model calculations that demonst…
