We present a study of the isocyano isomers of the cyanopolyynes HC3N, HC5N, and HC7N in TMC-1 and IRC+10216 carried out with the Yebes 40m radio telescope. This study has enabled us to report the detection, for the first time in space, of HCCCCNC in TMC-1 and to give upper limits for HC6NC in the same source. In addition, the deuterated isotopologues of HCCNC and HNCCC were detected, along with all 13C substitutions of HCCNC, also for the first time in space. The abundance ratios of HC3N and HC5N, with their isomers, are very different in TMC-1 and IRC+10216, namely, N(HC5N)/N(HC4NC) is 300 and >2100, respectively. We discuss the chemistry of the metastable isomers of cyanopolyynes in terms of the most likely formation pathways and by comparing observational abundance ratios between different sources.
We present Yebes 40m telescope observations of the three most stable C4H3N isomers towards the cyanopolyyne peak of TMC-1. We have detected 13 transitions from CH3C3N (A and E species), 16 lines from CH2CCHCN, and 27 lines (a-type and b-type) from HCCCH2CN. We thus provide a robust confirmation of the detection of HCCCH2CN and CH2CCHCN in space. We have constructed rotational diagrams for the three species, and obtained rotational temperatures between 4-8 K and similar column densities for the three isomers, in the range (1.5-3)e12 cm-2. Our chemical model provides abundances of the order of t…
We present the discovery in TMC-1 of allenyl acetylene, H2CCCHCCH, through the observation of nineteen lines with a signal-to-noise ratio ~4-15. For this species, we derived a rotational temperature of 7 +/- 1 K and a column density of (1.2 +/- 0.2)e13 cm-2. The other well known isomer of this molecule, methyl diacetylene (CH3C4H), has also been observed and we derived a similar rotational temperature, Trot = 7.0 +/- 0.3 K, and a column density for its two states (A and E) of (6.5 +/- 0.3)e12 cm-2. Hence, allenyl acetylene and methyl diacetylene have a similar abundance. Remarkably, their abun…
We report the detection of two isomers of ethynyl cyclopentadiene (c-C5H5CCH), namely 1- and 2-ethynyl-1,3-cyclopentadiene, in the direction of TMC-1. We derive column densities of (1.4 +/- 0.2)e12 cm-2, and (2.0 +/- 0.4)e12 cm-2, respectively, for these two cyclopentadiene derivatives, which imply that they are about ten times less abundant than cyclopentadiene. We also report the tentative detection of ethynyl benzene (C6H5CCH), for which we estimate a column density of (2.5 +/-0.4)e12 cm-2. We derived abundances for the corresponding cyano derivatives of cyclopentadiene and benzene and foun…
We report the detection of methyl ketene towards TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey. Nineteen rotational transitions with rotational quantum numbers ranging from J = 3 up to J = 5 and Ka =< 2 were identified in the frequency range 32.0-50.4 GHz, 11 of which arise above the 3σ level. We derived a column density for CH3CHCO of N=1.5x10^11 cm-2 and a rotational temperature of 9 K. Hence, the abundance ratio between ketene and methyl ketene, CH2CO/CH3CHCO, is 93. This species is the second C3H4O isomer detected. The other, trans-propenal (CH2CHCHO), corresponds to the most stable isomer and has a …
We report the first detection in space of the cumulene carbon chain $l$-H$_2$C$_5$. A total of eleven rotational transitions, with $J_{up}$ = 7-10 and $K_a$ = 0 and 1, were detected in TMC-1 in the 31.0-50.4 GHz range using the Yebes 40m radio telescope. We derive a column density of (1.8$\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$. In addition, we report observations of other cumulene carbenes detected previously in TMC-1, to compare their abundances with the newly detected cumulene carbene chain. We find that $l$-H$_2$C$_5$ is $\sim$4.0 times less abundant than the larger cumulene carbene $l$-H$_2$C…
Using radio observations with the Green Bank Telescope, evidence has now been found for a second five-membered ring in the dense cloud Taurus Molecular Cloud-1 (TMC-1). Based on additional observations of an ongoing, large-scale, high-sensitivity spectral line survey (GOTHAM) at centimeter wavelengths toward this source, we have used a combination of spectral stacking, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), and matched filtering techniques to detect 2-cyanocyclopentadiene, a low-lying isomer of 1-cyanocyclopentadiene, which was recently discovered there by the same methods. The new observational dat…
We present laboratory rotational spectroscopy of five isomers of cyanoindene (2-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-cyanoindene) using a cavity Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer operating between 6-40 GHz. Based on these measurements, we report the detection of 2-cyanoindene (1H-indene-2-carbonitrile; 2-C$_9$H$_7$CN) in GOTHAM line survey observations of the dark molecular cloud TMC-1 using the Green Bank Telescope at centimeter wavelengths. Using a combination of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), spectral stacking, and matched filtering techniques, we find evidence for the presence of this molecule at …
We present the discovery in TMC-1 of vinyl acetylene, CH2CHCCH, and the detection, for the first time in a cold dark cloud, of HCCN, HC4N, and CH3CH2CN. A tentative detection of CH3CH2CCH is also reported. The column density of vinyl acetylene is (1.2 +/- 0.2)e13 cm-2, which makes it one of the most abundant closed-shell hydrocarbons detected in TMC-1. Its abundance is only three times lower than that of propylene, CH3CHCH2. The column densities derived for HCCN and HC4N are (4.4 +/- 0.4)e11 cm-2 and (3.7 +/- 0.4)e11 cm-2, respectively. Hence, the HCCN/HC4N abundance ratio is 1.2 +/- 0.3. For …
We report the detection, for the first time in space, of a new non-functionalised hydrocarbon cycle in the direction of TMC-1: o-C6H4 (ortho-benzyne). We derive a column density for this hydrocarbon cycle of (5 +/- 1)e11 cm-2. The abundance of this species is around 30 times lower than that of cyclopentadiene and indene. We compare the abundance of benzyne with that of other pure hydrocarbons, cycles or chains, and find that it could be formed from neutral-radical reactions such as C2H + CH2CHCCH and C + C5H5, and possibly through C4H + C2H4, C3H + CH2CCH2, and C3H2 + C3H3. Hence, the rich con…
Using the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m radio telescopes, we detected a series of harmonically related lines with a rotational constant B0=4460.590 +/- 0.001 MHz and a distortion constant D0=0.511 +/- 0.005 kHz towards the cold dense core TMC-1. High-level-of-theory ab initio calculations indicate that the best possible candidate is protonated tricarbon monoxide, HC3O+. We have succeeded in producing this species in the laboratory and observed its J = 2-1 and 3-2 rotational transitions. Hence, we report the discovery of HC3O+ in space based on our observations, theoretical calculations, and laborator…
We report the detection of the protonated form of HC7N in TMC-1. The discovery of the cation HC7NH+ was carried out via the observation of nine harmonically related lines in the Q-band using the Yebes 40m radiotelescope. The observed frequencies allowed us to obtain the rotational constants B_0=553.938802(160)MHz and D_0=3.6292(705) Hz. The identification of HC7NH+ is further supported by accurate ab initio calculations. We derived a column density of (5.5+/-0.7)e10 cm-2, which constitutes another piece of evidence for the identification of the carrier. In addition, we revised the HC7N column …
We report the detection, for the first time in space, of cyano thioformaldehyde (HCSCN) and propynethial (HCSCCH) towards the starless core TMC-1. Cyano thioformaldehyde presents a series of prominent a- and b-type lines, which are the strongest previously unassigned features in our Q-band line survey of TMC-1. Remarkably, HCSCN is four times more abundant than cyano formaldehyde (HCOCN). On the other hand, HCSCCH is five times less abundant than propynal (HCOCCH). Surprisingly, we find an abundance ratio HCSCCH/HCSCN of 0.25, in contrast with most other ethynyl-cyanide pairs of molecules for …
Using the QUIJOTE line survey in the 32.0-50.4 GHz range, we report the discovery of the molecule CH2CCHC4H towards the prestellar cold core TMC-1 in the Taurus region. We also present a rigorous detection of CH2CCHC3N, along with its detailed analysis. We identified a total of twenty rotational transitions for each one of these molecules. The rotational quantum numbers range from Ju=17 up to 24 and Ka<=3. The column density for CH2CCHC4H is N=(2.2+/-0.2)x 1E12 cm-2, while for CH2CCHC3N, we derived N=(1.2+/-0.15) x 1E11 cm-2. The rotational temperature is 9.0+/-0.5 K for both species. The abun…
We report the detection in TMC-1 of the cation HCCS+ (3Sigma-), which is the protonated form of the widespread radical CCS. This is the first time that a protonated radical has been detected in a cold dark cloud. Twenty-six hyperfine components from twelve rotational transitions have been observed with the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m radio telescopes. We confidently assign the characteristic rotational spectrum pattern to HCCS+ based on the good agreement between the astronomical and theoretical spectroscopic parameters. The column density of HCCS+ is (1.1+/-0.1)e12 cm-2, and the CCS/HCCS+ abundanc…
We report the discovery of the C5H+ cation toward TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey. Four lines from J=7-6 up to J=10-9 have been identified in perfect harmonic frequency relation that can be fit with B=2411.94397 +/-0.00055 MHz and D=138+/-3 Hz. The standard deviation of the fit is 4.4 kHz. After discarding potential candidates, C5H- among them, we conclude that the carrier is C5H+, for which accurate ab initio calculations provide B=2410.3 MHz. We also report for the first time in a cold starless core the detection of the C3H+ cation. The column densities we derive for C5H+ and C3H+ are (8.…
Cyclic C5H (c-C5H), the radical formed by substituting an ethynyl group CCH for the hydrogen atom in the c-C3H radical, has been detected for the first time in the space. The c-C5H species is an isomer of the well-known linear radical l-C5H and is 6 kcal/mol less stable. A total of 17 rotational transitions were detected for the c-C5H species in TMC-1 within the 31.0-50.3 GHz range using the Yebes 40m radio telescope. We derive a column density of (9.0 +/- 0.9)e10 cm-2 for c-C5H. Additionally, we observed 12 lines for l-C5H and derive a column density for it of (1.3 +/- 0.3)e12 cm-2, which res…
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have long been invoked in the study of interstellar and protostellar sources, but the unambiguous identification of any individual PAH has proven elusive until very recently. As a result, the formation mechanisms for this important class of molecules remain poorly constrained. Here we report the first interstellar detection of a pure hydrocarbon PAH, indene (C$_9$H$_8$), as part of the GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting for Aromatic Molecules (GOTHAM) survey. This detection provides a new avenue for chemical inquiry, complementing the existing detections…
We report the detection for the first time in space of three new pure hydrocarbon cycles in TMC-1: c-C3HCCH (ethynyl cyclopropenylidene), c-C5H6 (cyclopentadiene) and c-C9H8 (indene). We derive a column density of 3.1e11 cm-2 for the former cycle and similar values, in the range (1-2)e13 cm-2, for the two latter molecules. This means that cyclopentadiene and indene, in spite of their large size, are exceptionally abundant, only a factor of five less abundant than the ubiquitous cyclic hydrocarbon c-C3H2. The high abundance found for these two hydrocarbon cycles, together with the high abundanc…
We report the discovery of two unsaturated organic species, trans-(E)-cyanovinylacetylene and vinylcyanoacetylene, using the second data release of the GOTHAM deep survey towards TMC-1 with the 100 m Green Bank Telescope. For both detections, we performed velocity stacking and matched filter analyses using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations, and for trans-(E)-cyanovinylacetylene, three rotational lines were observed at low signal-to-noise (${\sim}$3$σ$). From this analysis, we derive column densities of $2\times10^{11}$ and $3\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ for vinylcyanoacetylene and trans-(E)-cya…
We report the detection of fulvenallene ($c$-C$_5$H$_4$CCH$_2$) in the direction of TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey. Thirty rotational transitions with $K_a$=0,1,2,3 and $J$=9-15 were detected. The best rotational temperature fitting of the data is 9\,K and a derived column density is (2.7$\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is only a factor of 4.4 below that of its potential precursor cyclopentadiene ($c$-C$_5$H$_6$), and 1.4--1.9 times higher than that of the ethynyl derivatives of cyclopentadiene. We searched for fulvene ($c$-C$_5$H$_4$CH$_2$), a CH$_2$ derivative of cyclopentadie…
We report the detection of the oxygen-bearing complex organic molecules propenal (C2H3CHO), vinyl alcohol (C2H3OH), methyl formate (HCOOCH3), and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) toward the cyanopolyyne peak of the starless core TMC-1. These molecules are detected through several emission lines in a deep Q-band line survey of TMC-1 carried out with the Yebes 40m telescope. These observations reveal that the cyanopolyyne peak of TMC-1, which is the prototype of cold dark cloud rich in carbon chains, contains also O-bearing complex organic molecules like HCOOCH3 and CH3OCH3, which have been previously s…
We report the detection of the sulfur-bearing species NCS, HCCS, H2CCS, H2CCCS, and C4S for the first time in space. These molecules were found towards TMC-1 through the observation of several lines for each species. We also report the detection of C5S for the first time in a cold cloud through the observation of five lines in the 31-50 GHz range. The derived column densities are N(NCS) = (7.8 +/- 0.6)e11 cm-2, N(HCCS) = (6.8 +/- 0.6)e11 cm-2, N(H2CCS) = (7.8 +/- 0.8)e11 cm-2, N(H2CCCS) = (3.7 +/- 0.4)e11 cm-2, N(C4S) = (3.8 +/- 0.4)e10 cm-2, and N(C5S) = (5.0 +/- 1.0)e10 cm-2. The observed ab…
We report on the discovery of the C7N- anion towards the starless core TMC-1 and towards the carbon-rich evolved star IRC+10216. We used the data of the QUIJOTE line survey towards TMC-1 and found six lines in perfect harmonic frequency relation from J=27-26 up to J=32-31. The frequency of the lines can be reproduced with a rotational constant and a distortion constant of B=582.68490+/-0.00024 MHz and D=4.01+/-0.13 Hz, respectively. The standard deviation of the fit is 4 kHz. Towards IRC+10216, we identify 17 lines from J=27-26 up to J=43-42; their frequencies are also in harmonic relation, pr…
We present the first identification in interstellar space of the propargyl radical (CH2CCH). This species was observed in the cold dark cloud TMC-1 using the Yebes 40m telescope. The six strongest hyperfine components of the 2,0,2-1,0,1 rotational transition, lying at 37.46~GHz, were detected with signal-to-noise ratios in the range 4.6-12.3 sigma. We derive a column density of 8.7e13 cm-2 for CH2CCH, which translates to a fractional abundance relative to H2 of 8.7e-9. This radical has a similar abundance to methyl acetylene, with an abundance ratio CH2CCH/CH3CCH close to one. The propargyl ra…
We present the results of mapping observations toward a nearby starless filamentary cloud, the Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1), in the CCS(JN=43-32, 45.379033 GHz) emission line, using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The map shows that the TMC-1 filament has a diameter of ~0.1 pc and a length of ~0.5 pc at a distance of 140 pc. The position-velocity diagrams of CCS clearly indicate the existence of velocity-coherent substructures in the filament. We identify 21 substructures that are coherent in the position-position-velocity space by eye. Most of the substructures are elongated along the major …
The previous detection of two species related to the non polar molecule cyanogen (NCCN), its protonated form (NCCNH+) and one metastable isomer (CNCN), in cold dense clouds supported the hypothesis that dicyanopolyynes are abundant in space. Here we report the first identification in space of NC4NH+, which is the protonated form of NC4N, the second member of the series of dicyanopolyynes after NCCN. The detection was based on the observation of six harmonically related lines within the Yebes 40m line survey of TMC-1 QUIJOTE. The six lines can be fitted to a rotational constant B = 1293.90840 +…
We report on the detection, for the first time in space, of the radical HCCCO and of pentacarbon monoxide, C5O. The derived column densities are (1.6+/-0.2)e11 cm-2 and (1.5+/-0.2)e10 cm-2, respectively. We have also analysed the data for all the molecular species of the families HCnO and CnO within our QUIJOTE line survey. Upper limits are obtained for HC4O, HC6O, C4O, and C6O. We report a robust detection of HC5O and HC7O based on 14 and 12 rotational lines detected with a signal-to-noise ratio >30 and >5,respectively. The derived N(HC3O)/N(HC5O) abundance ratio is 0.09+/-0.03, while N(C3O)/…
We report the detection in TMC-1 of the protonated form of C3S. The discovery of the cation HC3S+ was carried through the observation of four harmonically related lines in the Q band using the Yebes 40m radiotelescope, and is supported by accurate ab initio calculations and laboratory measurements of its rotational spectrum. We derive a column density N(HC3S+) = (2.0 +/- 0.5)e11 cm-2, which translates to an abundance ratio C3S/HC3S+ of 65 +/- 20. This ratio is comparable to the CS/HCS+ ratio (35 +/- 8) and is a factor of about ten larger than the C3O/HC3O+ ratio previously found in the same so…

We report the discovery of five cyano derivatives of propene towards TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey: $trans$ and $cis$-crotononitrile ($t$-CH$_3$CHCHCN, $c$-CH$_3$CHCHCN), methacrylonitrile (CH$_2$C(CH$_3$)CN), and $gauche$ and $cis$-allyl cyanide ($g$-CH$_2$CHCH$_2$CN and $c$-CH$_2$CHCH$_2$CN). The observed transitions allowed us to derive a common rotational temperature of 7$\pm$1 K for all them. The derived column densities are N($t$-CH$_3$CHCHCN)=(5$\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$, N($c$-CH$_3$CHCHCN)=(1.3$\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, N(CH$_2$C(CH$_3$)CN)=(1.0$\pm$0.1)$\tim…
