We propose a class of topological superconductivity in which the pairing order is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically obstructed in a three-dimensional time-reversal invariant system. When two Fermi surfaces are related by time-reversal and mirror symmetries, such as those in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Dirac semimetal, the inter-Fermi-surface pairing in the weak-coupling regime inherits the band topological obstruction. As a result, the pairing order cannot be well-defined over the entire Fermi surface and forms a time-reversal invariant generalization of U($1$) monopole harmonic pairing. A tight-binding model of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically obstructed superconductor is constructed based on a doped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Dirac semimetal and exhibits nodal pairings. At an open boundary, the system exhibits a time-reversal pair of topologically protected surface states.
Topological band theory has achieved great success in the high-throughput search for topological band structures both in paramagnetic and magnetic crystal materials. However, a significant proportion of materials are topologically trivial insulators at the Fermi level. In this paper, we show that, remarkably, for a subset of the topologically trivial insulators, knowing only their electron number and the Wyckoff positions of the atoms we can separate them into two groups: the obstructed atomic insulator (OAI) and the atomic insulator (AI). The interesting group, the OAI, have a center of charg…
Non-trivial topology and unconventional pairing are two central guiding principles in the contemporary search for and analysis of superconducting materials and heterostructure compounds. Previously, a topological superconductor has been predominantly conceived to result from a topologically non-trivial band subject to intrinsic or external superconducting proximity effect. Here, we propose a new class of topological superconductors which are uniquely induced by unconventional pairing. They exhibit a boundary-obstructed higher-order topological character and, depending on their dimensionality, …
Since the proposal of monopole Cooper pairing in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 067003 (2018)], considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the study of Cooper pairing order parameters constrained (or obstructed) by the nontrivial normal-state band topology at Fermi surfaces in 3D systems. In the current work, we generalize the topologically obstructed pairings between Chern states (like the monopole Cooper pairing) by proposing Euler obstructed Cooper pairing in 3D systems. The Euler obstructed Cooper pairing widely exists between two Fermi surfaces with nontrivial band topology characterize…
We show that the presence of Majorana zero modes (2D), and chiral-dispersing Majorana modes (3D), in the vortex cores of superconductors are neither sufficient nor necessary conditions for one to conclude the superconductivity is topologically non-trivial. We discuss the relevance of this result to the proximity-induced superconductivity, in the presence of magnetic field, on the surface of topological insulators.
Topologically trivial insulators come in two kinds: atomic, where the Wannier charge centers (WCCs) are localized on the atoms, and obstructed atomic, where the WCCs are located away from the atoms. The latter, which can exhibit interesting surface states and possibly have much larger band gaps than the topological insulators, have so far not been classified in three-dimensional (3D) crystalline materials. In this paper, we developed the 3D real space invariants (RSIs) for the 1651 Shubnikov space groups with the spin-orbit coupling and provide the full classification of 3D obstructed atomic i…
Using superconducting quantum circuit elements, we propose an approach to experimentally construct a Kitaev lattice, which is an anisotropic spin model on a honeycomb lattice with three types of nearest-neighbor interactions and having topologically protected ground states. We study two particular parameter regimes to demonstrate both vortex and bond-state excitations. Our proposal outlines an experimentally realizable artificial many-body system that exhibits exotic topological properties.
We have designed, fabricated and tested a robust superconducting ratchet device based on topologically frustrated spin-ice nanomagnets. The device is made of a magnetic Co honeycomb array embedded in a superconducting Nb film. This device is based on three simple mechanisms: i) the topology of the Co honeycomb array frustrates in-plane magnetic configurations in the array yielding a distribution of magnetic charges which can be ordered or disordered with in-plane magnetic fields, following spin-ice rules, ii) the local vertex magnetization, which consists of a magnetic half vortex with two cha…
The relation of topological insulators and superconductors and the field of nonlinear dynamics is widely unexplored. To address this subject, we adopt the linear coupling geometry of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, a paradigmatic example for a topological insulator, and render it nonlinearly in the context of superconducting circuits. As a consequence, the system exhibits topologically-enforced bifurcations as a function of the topological control parameter, which finally gives rise to chaotic dynamics, separating phases which exhibit clear topological features.
For successful realization of a quantum computer, its building blocks (qubits) should be simultaneously scalable and sufficiently protected from environmental noise. Recently, a novel approach to the protection of superconducting qubits has been proposed. The idea is to prevent errors at the "hardware" level, by building a fault-free (topologically protected) logical qubit from "faulty" physical qubits with properly engineered interactions between them. It has been predicted that the decoupling of a protected logical qubit from local noises would grow exponentially with the number of physical …
The behavior of thermal fluctuations of a superconducting order parameter with extended $ s $ and chiral $ d + id $ symmetry is investigated. The study is carried out on a triangular lattice within the framework of the quasi-two-dimensional single-band model with attraction between electrons at neighboring sites. The method of consistent consideration of the order parameter fluctuations and the charge carrier scattering by fluctuations of coupled electron pairs, based on the theory of functional integration is used. The distribution functions of the phase fluctuation probabilities depending on…
Topological materials which are also superconducting are of great current interest, since they may exhibit a non-trivial topologically-mediated superconducting phase. Although there have been many reports of pressure-tuned or chemical-doping-induced superconductivity in a variety of topological materials, there have been few examples of intrinsic, ambient pressure superconductivity in a topological system having a stoichiometric composition. Here, we report that the pure intermetallic CaSn3 not only exhibits topological fermion properties but also has a superconducting phase at 1.178 K under a…
A one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled nanowire with proximity-induced pairing from a nearby s-wave superconductor may be in a topological nontrivial state, in which it has a zero energy Majorana bound state at each end. We find that the topological trivial phase may have fermionic end states with an exponentially small energy, if the confinement potential at the wire's ends is smooth. The possible existence of such near-zero energy levels implies that the mere observation of a zero-bias peak in the tunneling conductance is not an exclusive signature of a topological superconducting phase even i…
We study topological stability of nodes in nonsymmorphic superconductors (SCs). In particular, we demonstrate that line nodes in nonsymmirphic odd-parity SCs are protected by the interplay between topology and nonsymmorphic symmetry. As an example, it is shown that the $E_{2u}$-superconducting state of UPt$_3$ hosts the topologically stable line node at the Brillouin zone face. Our theory indicates that the existence of spin-orbit coupling is essential for protecting such a line node, complementing the Norman's group theory argument. Developing the topological arguments, we also argue generali…
The classification of topological states of matter in terms of unitary symmetries and dimensionality predicts the existence of nontrivial topological states even in zero-dimensional systems, i.e., a system with a discrete energy spectrum. Here, we show that a quantum dot coupled with two superconducting leads can realize a nontrivial zero-dimensional topological superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry, which corresponds to the finite size limit of the one-dimensional topological superconductor. Topological phase transitions corresponds to a change of the fermion parity, and to the pr…
This comment is written on the article by Hiroyasu Koizumi, in which an alternative theory of superconductivity is proposed. No Joule heating is predicted in this theory unlike the conventional BCS-London theory of superconductivity. The theory is based on the author's opinion that the kinetic energy for the supercurrent is converted into the energy of the magnetic field during the transition of a bulk superconductor into the normal state in the presence of a magnetic field. The Comment indicates that this opinion cannot be correct, since the kinetic energy is much less than the energy of the …
Topologically non-trivial superconductivity has been predicted to occur in superconductors with a sizable spin-orbit coupling in the presence of an external Zeeman splitting. Two such systems have been proposed: (a) s-wave superconductor pair potential is proximity induced on a semiconductor, and (b) pair potential naturally arises from an intrinsic s-wave pairing interaction. As is now well known, such systems in the form of a 2D film or 1D nano-wires in a wire-network can be used for topological quantum computation. When the external Zeeman splitting $Γ$ crosses a critical value $Γ_c$, the s…
Superconducting proximity pairing in helical edge modes, such as those of topological insulators (TI), is predicted to provide a unique platform for realizing Majorana zero modes (MZMs). We use scanning tunneling microscopy measurements to probe the influence of proximity induced superconductivity and magnetism on the helical hinge states of Bi(111) films, grown on a superconducting Nb substrate and decorated with magnetic Fe clusters. Consistent with model calculations, our measurements reveal the emergence of a localized MZM at the interface between the superconducting helical edge channel a…
It is interesting to ask whether electron interaction can turn a topologically trivial superconductor into a nontrivial one without the presence of spin-obital coupling. In this paper we solve a correlated $s$-wave superconducting model exactly. The variation of the fermion number parity of the superconducting ground state as a function of the electron interaction is calculated and the topological phase diagram is obtained. Topological $s$-wave superconducting states are revealed in the doped Mott insulators, which is further confirmed by the numerical investigation of the topological boundary…
We revisit a venerable question: what is the nature of the ordering in a superconductor? We find that the answer is properly that the superconducting state exhibits topological order in the sense of Wen, i.e. that while it lacks a local order parameter, it is sensitive to the global topology of the underlying manifold and exhibits an associated fractionalization of quantum numbers. We show that this perspective unifies a number of previous observations on superconductors and their low lying excitations and that this complex can be elegantly summarized in a purely topological action of the ``$B…

We study topological vortex phases in iron-based superconductors. Besides the previously known vortex end Majorana zero modes (MZMs) phase stemming from the existence of a three dimensional (3D) strong topological insulator state, we show that there is another topologically nontrivial phase as iron-based superconductors can be doped superconducting 3D weak topological insulators (WTIs). The vortex bound states in a superconducting 3D WTI exhibit two different types of quantum states, a robust nodal superconducting phase with pairs of bulk MZMs and a full-gap topologically nontrivial supercondu…
A large number of half-Heusler compounds have been recently proposed as three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) with tunable physical properties. However, no transport measurements associated with the topological surface states have been observed in these half-Heusler candidates due to the dominating contribution from bulk electrical conductance. Here we show that, by reducing the mobility of bulk carriers, a two-dimensional (2D) weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, one of the hallmarks of topological surface states, was experimentally revealed from the tilted magnetic field dependen…
MoTe_2, with the orthorhombic T_d phase, is a new type (type-II) of Weyl semimetal, where the Weyl Fermions emerge at the boundary between electron and hole pockets. Non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR), and superconductivity were also observed in T_d-MoTe_2. Understanding the superconductivity in T_d-MoTe_2, which was proposed to be topologically non-trivial, is of eminent interest. Here, we report high-pressure (p_max = 1.3 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in T_d-MoTe_2. A substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s/m^* and a…
We argue that the frustrated Josephson junction arrays may support a topologically ordered superconducting ground state, characterized by a non-trivial ground state degeneracy on the torus. This superconducting quantum fluid provides an explicit example of a system in which superconductivity arises from a topological mechanism rather than from the usual Landau-Ginzburg mechanism.
An unconventional pairing mechanism in the heavy-fermion material $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$ is studied. We propose a mixed singlet-triplet $d$-density wave to be the hidden-order state in $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$. The exotic order is topologically nontrivial and supports a charge $2e$ skyrmionic spin texture, which is assumed to fractionalize into merons and antimerons at the deconfined quantum critical point. The interaction between these fractional particles results in a (pseudo)spin-singlet chiral $d$-wave superconducting state, which breaks time reversal symmetry. Therefore, it is highly li…
Based on the first-principles calculations, we theoretically propose topologically non-trivial states in a recently experimentally discovered superconducting material CaSn$_3$. When the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored, the material is a host to three-dimensional topological nodal-line semimetal states. Drumhead like surface states protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and mirror symmetry emerge within the two-dimensional regions of the surface Brillouin zone connecting the nodal lines. When SOC is included, unexpectedly, each nodal line evolves into two Weyl nodes (W1, W2) in this…
Recent experiments have pointed to a chiral p-wave-like superconductivity in epitaxial Bi/Ni bilayers that are spontaneously time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), making it a promising platform for exploring physics useful for topologically protected quantum computing. Quite intriguingly, evidence has emerged that in non-epitaxial Bi/Ni bilayers, superconductivity arises due to the formation of NiBi3, which has been reported to host coexisting ferromagnetic and superconducting orders at the surface. We perform high resolution surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE) measurements using a Sag…
We show that finite angular momentum pairing chiral superconductors on the triangular lattice have point zeroes in the complex gap function. A topological quantum phase transition takes place through a nodal superconducting state at a specific carrier density $x_c$ where the normal state Fermi surface crosses the isolated zeros. For spin singlet pairing, we show that the second nearest neighbor $d+id$-wave pairing can be the dominant pairing channel. The gapless critical state at $x_c\simeq0.25$ has six Dirac points and is topologically nontrivial with a $T^3$ spin relaxation rate below $T_c$.…
Nodal-line semimetals are topologically non-trivial states of matter featuring band crossings along a closed curve, i.e. nodal-line, in momentum space. Through a detailed analysis of the electronic structure, we show for the first time that the normal state of the superconductor NaAlSi, with a critical temperature of $T_{\rm c} \approx$ 7 K, is a nodal-line semimetal, where the complex nodal-line structure is protected by non-symmorphic mirror crystal symmetries. We further report on muon spin rotation experiments revealing that the superconductivity in NaAlSi is truly of bulk nature, featurin…
The competition between Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions away from half filling is studied for the the hole-doped Kitaev-Heisenberg $t$-$J_K$-$J_H$ model on a honeycomb lattice. While the isotropic Heisenberg coupling supports a time-reversal violating d-wave singlet state, we find that the Kitaev interaction favors a time-reversal invariant p-wave superconducting phase, which obeys the rotational symmetries of the microscopic model, and is robust for $J_H<J_K/2$. Within the p-wave superconducting phase, a critical chemical potential $μ_c \approx t$ separates a topologically trivial phase fo…
We present a unified description of a junction between $s$-wave (BCS) superconductors and a junction between $p$-wave superconductors in a topologically nontrivial phase, which relies on a scattering state expansion. We compute Josephson current and thermal noise in the two kinds of junction and exhibit some characteristic features for a junction of two topological superconductors hosting Majorana zero-energy modes.
Non-equilibrium state can exhibit the same macroscopic properties, such as conductivity or superconductivity, as a static state when they share the identical average of an observable over a period of time. We investigate the quench dynamics of a Kitaev chain by introducing two kinds of order parameters which relate to two channels of pairing, local pair in real space and BCS-like pair in momentum space. Based on exact solutions, we find that two order parameters are identical for the ground state, indicating the balance between two kinds of pairing channels, and can identify the quantum phase …

The topologically non-trivial band structure of A15 compounds has drawn attention owing to the possible realization of topological superconductivity. Here, we report a microscopic investigation of the superconducting ground state in A15 compound Ti$_{3}$X (X = Ir, Sb) by muon spectroscopy measurements. Zero field muon measurements have shown that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in these materials. Furthermore, specific heat and a transverse field muon spectroscopy measurement rule out any possibility to have a nodal or anisotropic superconducting gap, revealing a conventional s-wave nature…
Discovery of exotic phases of matter from the topologically non-trivial systems not only makes the research on topological materials more interesting but also enriches our understanding of the fascinating physics of such materials. Pb$_{0.6}$Sn$_{0.4}$Te was recently shown to be a topological crystalline insulator. Here we show that by forming a mesoscopic point-contact using a normal non-superconducting elemental metal on the surface of Pb$_{0.6}$Sn$_{0.4}$Te a novel superconducting phase is created locally in a confined region under the point-contact. This happens while the bulk of the sampl…
For superconducting nanowire with the pairing of extended s-type symmetry, Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a magnetic field, the influence of strong intersite charge correlations on single-particle Majorana excitations is analyzed. This problem is investigated on the basis of the density matrix renormalization group numerical method. It is shown that with an increase in the repulsion intensity of electrons located at the neighboring sites, two subbands emerge in the lower Hubbard band of the open system. Based on calculations of the Majorana polarization and degeneracy of the entanglement spe…
Determining the pairing symmetry of single-layer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ is the key to understanding the enhanced pairing mechanism; furthermore, it guides exploring new superconductors with high transition temperatures ($T_\mathrm{c}$). Despite significant efforts, it remains controversial whether the symmetry is the sign-preserving $s$- or the sign-changed $s_{\pm}$-wave. Here, we investigate the pairing symmetry of single-layer FeSe from a topological point of view. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we have systematically characterized the superconducting states at…
We derive an effective two-dimensional low-energy theory for thin superconducting films coupled to a three-dimensional fluctuating electromagnetic field. Using this theory we discuss plasma oscil- lations, interactions between charges and vortices and extract the energy of a vortex. Having found that the effective theory properly describes the long distance physics, we then use it to investigate to what extent the superconducting film is a topologically ordered phase of matter.

The diversity of emergent phenomena in quantum materials often arises from the interplay between different physical energy scales or broken symmetries. Cooperative interactions among them are rare; however, when they do occur, they often stabilize fundamentally new ground states or phase behaviors. For instance, a pair density wave can form when the superconducting order parameter borrows spatial periodical variation from charge order; a topological superconductor can arise when topologically nontrivial electronic states proximitize with or participate in the formation of the superconducting c…
We consider transport properties of a hybrid device composed by a quantum dot placed between normal and superconducting reservoirs, and coupled to a Majorana nanowire: a topological superconducting segment hosting Majorana zero-modes at the opposite ends. It is demonstrated that if topologically protected (nonoverlapping) Majorana zero-modes are formed in the system, zero-bias Andreev conductance through the dot exhibits isoconductance profiles with the shape depending on the spin asymmetry of the coupling between a dot and a topological superconductor. Otherwise, for the topologically trivial…
We theoretically study bilayer superconducting topological insulator film, in which superconductivity exists for both top and bottom surface states. We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive the system into Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase, where electrons are paired with finite momenta. The LO phase is topologically non-trivial and characterized by a Z 2 topological invariant, leading to a Majorana zero mode chain along the edge perpendicular to in-plane magnetic fields.
High-pressure synthesis techniques have allowed for the growth of samples on the indium-rich side of (Pb,In)Te, which have increased superconducting transition temperatures compared to lead-rich compounds. In this study we present measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ in the compound In$_{0.8}$Pb$_{0.2}$Te, which shows a bulk $T_{c,onset}$ of $\sim4.75$ K. The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity, topologically nontrivial $A_{2u}$ pairing; however, odd-parity $A_{1u}$ pairing is still possible. Critical field values…
Superconducting vortices are promising traps to confine non-Abelian Majorana quasi-particles. It has been widely believed that bulk-state topology, of either normal-state or superconducting ground-state wavefunctions, is crucial for enabling Majorana zero modes in solid-state systems. This common belief has shaped two major search directions for Majorana modes, in either intrinsic topological superconductors or trivially superconducting topological materials. Here we show that Majorana-carrying superconducting vortex is not exclusive to bulk-state topology, but can arise from topologically tri…
Motivated by recent developments in the field of one-dimensional topological superconductors, we investigate the topological properties of s-matrix of generic superconducting junctions where dimension should not play any role. We argue that for a finite junction the s-matrix is always topologically trivial. We resolve an apparent contradiction with the previous results by taking into account the low-energy resonant poles of s-matrix. Thus no common topological transition occur in a finite junction. We reveal a transition of a different kind that concerns the configuration of the resonant poles…
We numerically compute the low-energy spectrum of a gate-controlled superconducting topological nanowire segmented into two islands, each Josephson-coupled to a bulk superconductor. This device may host two pairs of Majorana bound states and could provide a platform for testing Majorana fusion rules. We analyze the crossover between (i) a charge-dominated regime utilizable for initialization and readout of Majorana bound states, (ii) a single-island regime for dominating inter-island Majorana coupling, (iii) a Josephson-plasmon regime for large coupling to the bulk superconductors, and (iv) a …
It has previously been found that a magnetic impurity in a conventional $s$-wave superconductor can give rise to a local $π$-phase shift of the superconducting order parameter. By studying a finite wire of ferromagnetic impurities, we are able to trace the origin of the $π$-phase shift to a resonance condition for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticle states. When non-resonating states localized at the impurity sites are pulled into the condensate for increasing magnetic strength, the superconducting order parameter is reduced in discrete steps, eventually resulting in a $π$-phase shift. We a…
The recent discovery of the topologically protected surface states in the beta-phase of PdBi2 has reignited the research interest in this class of superconductors. Here, we show results of our muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements carried out to investigate the superconducting and magnetic properties and the topological effect in the superconducting ground state of beta-PdBi2. Zero-field muSR data reveal that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity implying that the time reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of beta…
We establish the topology of the spin-singlet superconducting states in the bare hyperhoneycomb lattice and derive analytically the full phase diagram using only symmetry and topology in combination with simple energy arguments. The phase diagram is dominated by two states preserving time-reversal symmetry. We find that the line-nodal state dominating at low doping levels is topologically nontrivial and exhibits surface Majorana flat bands, which we show perfectly match the bulk-boundary correspondence using Berry phase approach. At higher doping levels we find a fully gapped state with trivia…
The study of classical spins in topological insulators [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 115216 (2009)] is generalized to topological superconductors. Based on the characteristic features of the so-called $F$-function, Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian for superconductors is classified to positive, negative, and zero "gap" categories for topologically trivial and nontrivial phases of a topological superconductor as well as a BCS superconductor respectively. It is found that the $F$-function determines directly the presence or absence of localized excited states, induced by bulk classical spins and nonmag…
The study of topological classes and their associated edge states has been of ongoing interest. In one dimension, the standard platform of these studies has been the conventional Kitaev wire and its realizations. In this work, we study the edge states in coupled p-wave platforms in 1D, in the presence of experimentally relevant perturbations, like a Zeeman field and s-wave SC. Firstly, we show that the unperturbed coupled p-wave setup by itself can have two types of Majorana edge states, depending on the value of the effective onsite potential. We show that additional components like Zeeman fi…
We discuss the properties of topologically nontrivial superconducting phases and the conditions for their realization in condensed matter, and the principles for identifying Majorana bound states (MBSs). Along with the well-known Kitaev chain and superconducting nanowire (SW) models with spin-orbit coupling in an external magnetic field, we discuss models of quasi-2D materials in which MBSs are realized in the presence of noncollinear spin ordering. For finite-length SWs, we demonstrate a cascade of quantum transitions occurring with a change in the magnetic field, accompanied by a change in t…
