The nuclear symmetry energy is a key quantity in nuclear (astro)physics. It describes the isospin dependence of the nuclear equation of state (EOS), which is commonly assumed to be almost quadratic. In this work, we confront this standard quadratic expansion of the EOS with explicit asymmetric nuclear-matter calculations based on a set of commonly used Hamiltonians including two- and three-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective field theory. We study, in particular, the importance of non-quadratic contributions to the symmetry energy, including the non-analytic logarithmic term introduced by Kaiser [Phys.~Rev.~C \textbf{91}, 065201 (2015)]. Our results suggest that the quartic contribution to the symmetry energy can be robustly determined from the various Hamiltonians employed, and we obtain 1.00(8) MeV (or 0.55(8) MeV for the potential part) at saturation density, while the logarithmic contribution to the symmetry energy is relatively small and model-dependent. We finally employ the meta-model approach to study the impact of the higher-order contributions on the neutron-star crust-core transition density, and find a small 5\% correction.
We present and discuss properties of isospin asymmetric matter whose equation of state is derived from recent high-quality chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials and chiral effective three-nucleon forces. After a brief review of the chiral few-nucleon forces which we adopt, we concentrate on the symmetry energy and its density derivatives. We also explore the correlation between the symmetry energy at saturation density and its slope parameter, L. We estimate the truncation error across three orders of the chiral expansion for both the symmetry energy as a function of density and the slope paramete…
A reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model (RAT-PRM) with a quasi-proton and a quasi-neutron coupled with a reflection-asymmetric triaxial rotor is developed and applied to investigate the multiple chiral doublet (M$χ$D) bands candidates with octupole correlations in $^{78}$Br. The calculated excited energies, energy staggering parameters, and $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratios are in a reasonable agreement with the data of the chiral doublet bands with positive- and negative-parity. The influence of the triaxial deformation $γ$ on the calculated $B(E1)$ is found to be significant. By changing $γ…
Three body effects are studied for both asymmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter to calculate the nuclear Equation of State . The Brueckner Hartree Fock approximation is used using CD Bonn B and Argonne V18 potentials. A two body density dependent Skyrme potential is added to reproduce the empirical saturation point. Good agreement is obtained in comparison with exact calculation including three body forces.
The density and temperature dependence of the nuclear symmetry free energy is investigated using microscopic two- and three-body nuclear potentials constructed from chiral effective field theory. The nuclear force models and many-body methods are benchmarked to properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the vicinity of the saturation density as well as the virial expansion of the neutron matter equation of state at low fugacities. The free energy per particle of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated assuming a quadratic dependence of the interaction contributions on the isospi…
We present the formalism of linear response theory both at zero and finite temperature in the case of asymmetric nuclear matter excited by an isospin flip probe. The particle-hole interaction is derived from a general Skyrme functional that includes spin-orbit and tensor terms. Response functions are obtained by solving a closed algebraic system of equations. Spin strength functions are analyzed for typical values of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature.
Background: The presence of nuclear ground states with stable reflection-asymmetric shapes is supported by rich experimental evidence. Theoretical surveys of odd-multipolarity deformations predict the existence of pear-shaped isotopes in several fairly localized regions of the nuclear landscape in the vicinity of near-lying single-particle shells with $Δ\ell=Δj=3$. Purpose: We analyze the role of isoscalar, isovector, neutron-proton, neutron-neutron, and proton-proton multipole interaction energies in inducing the onset of reflection-asymmetric ground-state deformations. Methods: The calculati…
