In most calculations of hard particle suppression in heavy-ion reactions the hadronic stage has been neglected due to formation time arguments. Most of the hard particle shower exits the hot and dense medium before the system enters the hadronic evolution. In this contribution, a first assessment within the hadronic transport approach SMASH (Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons) of rescattering effects on hard particles is presented. In particular, it is shown that the hadronic energy loss depends on the particle species as well as the energy of the probe. A parametrization for the $\langle \tilde{q} \rangle$ parameter as a function of temperature and particle energy is given for pions. Overall, major effects of the hadronic stage are expected in the transverse momentum range from 2-10 GeV and therefore jet sub-structure analysis and (hard-soft) correlation observables might be affected.
The suppression of high momentum particles in heavy-ion collisions in comparison to elementary reactions is one of the main indications for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. In recent studies, full jets are being reconstructed and substructure observables are gaining importance in assessing the medium modifications of hard probes. In this work, the effect of the late stage hadronic interactions are explored within the hadronic transport approach SMASH (Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons). High momentum particles are incorporated in a radially expanding hadron gas to …
We estimate the energy loss distribution and investigate the quenching of hadron spectra in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions due to the collisional energy loss of energetic partons from hard parton collisions in the initial stage.
The generic features of parton energy loss effects on the quenching of single hadron spectra in heavy-ion collisions are discussed, paying attention to the expected differences from RHIC to LHC. The need for precise baseline measurements in p-Pb collisions at the LHC is also emphasized. Finally I briefly mention the production of prompt photons in heavy-ion collisions as well as some open questions.
Theoretical understanding of the observed jet quenching measurements at RHIC and LHC is challenging in QCD because it requires understanding of parton to hadron fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD. In this paper, by using closed-time path integral formalism, we derive the gauge invariant definition of the gluon to hadron fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD which is consistent with factorization theorem in non-equilibrium QCD from first principles.
A parton produced with a high transverse momentum in a hard collision is regenerating its color field, intensively radiating gluons and losing energy. This process cannot last long, if it ends up with production of a leading hadron carrying the main fraction z_h of the initial parton momentum. So energy conservation imposes severe constraints on the length scale of production of a single hadron with high pT. As a result, the main reason for hadron quenching observed in heavy ion collisions, is not energy loss, but attenuation of the produced colorless dipole in the created dense medium. The la…
We determine how the yield of large transverse momentum hadrons is modified due to induced gluon radiation off a hard parton traversing a QCD medium. The quenching factor is formally a collinear- and infrared-safe quantity and can be treated perturbatively. In spite of that, in the $p_\perp$ region of practical interest, its value turns out to be extremely sensitive to large distances and can be used to unravel the properties of dense quark-gluon final states produced in heavy ion collisions. We also find that the standard modelling of quenching by shifting $p_\perp$ in the hard parton cross s…
Multiple interactions between parton showers and the surrounding QCD matter are expected to underlie the strong medium-modifications of jet observables in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. Here, we note that such jet-medium interactions alter generically and characteristically the color correlations in the parton shower. We characterize these effects in a color-differential calculation of the medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum to first and second order in opacity. By interfacing simple branching histories of medium-modified color flow with the Lund hadronizat…
Significant jet quenching in central $Au+Au$ collisions has been discovered at RHIC. This paper provides theoretical arguments and lists experimental evidence that the observed jet quenching at RHIC is due to parton energy loss instead of hadron rescattering or absorption in a hadronic medium. These include: (1) hadron formation time based on the uncertainty principle, (2) $p_T$ dependence and (3) centrality dependence of the observed jet quenching, (4) jet-like leading hadron correlations (5) high-$p_T$ azimuthal anisotropy and (6) experimental data from $Pb+Pb$ collisions at SPS and $e+A$ co…
A new scenario, alternative to energy loss, for the observed suppression of high-pT hadrons observed at RHIC is proposed. In the limit of a very dense medium crated in nuclear collisions the mean free-path of the produced (pre)hadron vanishes, and and the nuclear suppression, R_{AA} is completely controlled by the production length. The RHIC data are well explained in a parameter free way, and predictions for LHC are provided.
Since large $p_T$ particles in high-energy hadronic or nuclear collisions come from jet fragmentation, jet quenching due to parton energy loss in dense matter will cause the suppression of large $p_T$ hadron spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Assuming an effective energy loss $dE/dx$ for the high $E_T$ partons, effective jet fragmentation functions are constructed in which leading hadrons will be suppressed. Using such effective fragmentation functions, high $p_T$ hadron spectra and particle suppression factors relative to $pp$ collisions are estimated in central high-energy nuclear …
I examine the role of final state interactions in cold nuclear matter in modifying hadron production on nuclear targets with leptonic or hadronic beams. I demonstrate the extent to which available experimental data in electron-nucleus collisions can give direct information on final state effects in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. For hadron-nucleus collisions, a theoretical estimate based on a parton energy loss model tested in lepton-nucleus collisions shows a large effect on mid-rapidity hadrons at fixed target experiments. At RHIC energy, the effect is large for negative rapi…
Recent experiments have observed large anisotropic collective flows in high multiplicity proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which indicates the possible formation of mini quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in small collision systems. However, no jet quenching has been confirmed in such small systems so far. To understand this intriguing result, the system size scan experiments have been proposed to bridge the gap between large and small systems. In this work, we perform a systematic study on both heavy and light flavor jet quenching in different collision systems at the LHC energ…
Relativistic heavy-ion experiments have observed similar quenching effects for (prompt) $D$ mesons compared to charged hadrons for transverse momenta larger than 6-8~GeV, which remains a mystery since heavy quarks typically lose less energies in quark-gluon plasma than light quarks and gluons. Recent measurements of the nuclear modification factors of $B$ mesons and $B$-decayed $D$ mesons by the CMS Collaboration provide a unique opportunity to study the flavor hierarchy of jet quenching. Using a linear Boltzmann transport model combined with hydrodynamics simulation, we study the energy loss …
In jet quenching, a hard QCD parton, before fragmenting into a jet of hadrons, deposits a fraction of its energy in the medium, leading to suppressed production of high-$p_T$ hadrons. Assuming that the deposited energy quickly thermalizes, we simulate the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP fluid. Hydrodynamic evolution and subsequent particle emission depend on the jet trajectories. Azimuthal distribution of excess $π^-$ due to quenching jet, averaged over all the trajectories, reasonably well reproduce the di-hadron correlation as measured by the STAR and PHENIX collaboration in cen…
High-pT hadrons produced in hard collisions and detected inclusively bear peculiar features: (i) they originate from jets whose initial virtuality and energy are of the same order; (ii) such jets are rare and have a very biased energy sharing among the particles, namely, the detected hadron carries the main fraction of the jet energy. The former feature leads to an extremely intensive gluon radiation and energy dissipation at the early stage of hadronization, either in vacuum or in a medium. As a result, a leading hadron must be produced on a short length scale. Evaluation within a model of pe…
Hydrodynamics and jet quenching are responsible for the elliptic flow $v_2$ and suppression of large transverse momentum ($p_T$) hadrons, respectively, two of the most important phenomena leading to the discovery of a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A consistent description of the hadron suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$, especially at intermediate $p_T$, however, remains a challenge. We solve this long-standing $R_{AA}\otimes v_2$ puzzle by including quark coalescence for hadronization and final state hadron cascade in the coupled linear Bolt…
We evaluate the nuclear suppression factor, $R_{AA}(p_T)$ for light hadrons by taking into account the collisional energy loss. We show that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC the elastic process is the dominant mechanism for the partonic energy loss.
Recent RHIC data have shown novel nuclear modifications of moderate to high pt particle production in central Au+Au collisions, including a suppression of hadron production and a disappearance of back-to-back hadron pairs. In this paper, we investigate whether final-state hadronic interactions of the jet fragments can reproduce the RHIC data. We find that hadronic rescattering can account for the disappearance of back-to-back hadron pairs, but cannot reproduce other features of the RHIC data.
Recent advances in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons have led to the development of a new method that gives a unified description of inclusive hadron production in reactions with nucleons and heavy nuclei. We show how this approach, based on the generalization of the DGLAP evolution equations to include final-state medium-induced parton showers, can be combined with initial-state effects for applications to jet quenching phenomenology. We demonstrate that the traditional parton energy loss calculations can be regarded as a special soft-gluon emission limit of the general QCD …
Jet quenching provides a very flexible variety of observables which are sensitive to different energy- and time-scales of the strongly interacting matter created in heavy-ion collisions. Exploiting this versatility would make jet quenching an excellent chronometer of the yoctosecond structure of the evolution process. Here we show, for the first time, that a combination of jet quenching observables is sensitive to the initial stages of heavy-ion collisions, when the approach to local thermal equilibrium is expected to happen. Specifically, we find that in order to reproduce at the same time th…
We present the first application of a recently-developed effective theory of jet propagation in matter SCETG to inclusive hadron suppression in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. SCETG-based splitting kernels allow us to go beyond the traditional energy loss approximation and unify the treatment of vacuum and medium-induced parton showers. In the soft gluon emission limit, we establish a simple analytic relation between the QCD evolution and energy loss approaches to jet quenching. We quantify the uncertainties associated with the implementation of the in-medim modification of hadron produ…
The quenching of jets (and high-pT particle spectra) observed in heavy-ion collisions is interpreted as due to the energy lost by hard partons crossing the Quark Gluon Plasma. Here we review recent efforts to include in its modeling important qualitative features of QCD, like the correlations in multiple gluon emissions and the color-flow pattern in parton branchings. In particular, the modification of color connections among the partons of a shower developing in the presence of a medium is a generic occurrence accompanying parton energy-loss. We show how this effect can leave its fingerprints…
We present a transport theoretical analysis of hadron attenuation in deep inelastic lepton scattering (DIS) off complex nuclei in the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment. The HERMES data indicate the presence of strong prehadronic final state interactions shortly after the elementary lepton-nucleon interaction. The contribution of such (pre-)hadronic final state interactions to the observed jet quenching in ultra-relaticistic heavy ion collisions (HIC) at RHIC is estimated under the assumption that a similar space-time picture for hadronization also holds in a hot hadronic medium. Our re…
Suppression of high $p_T$ hadron spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at different energies is studied within a pQCD parton model incorporating medium induced parton energy loss. The $p_T$ dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_T)$ is found to depend on both the energy dependence of the parton energy loss and the power-law behavior of the initial jet spectra. The high $p_T$ hadron suppression at $\sqrt{s}=62.4$ GeV and its centrality dependence are studied in detail. The overall values of the modification factor are found to provide strong constraints on the lifetime of…
The value of the parton to hadron fragmentation function in QCD in vacuum (for example from proton-proton collisions at high energy colliders) is directly/indirectly used in the literature to study the jet quenching and the hadron production from quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC. In this paper we show that this is not possible because, unlike the perturbative propagator in non-equilibrium QCD, the parton to hadron fragmentation function is a non-perturbative quantity in QCD and hence it is not possible to decompose the fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD into the vacuum part and th…
The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model coupled to hydrodynamical background is extended to include transport of both light partons and heavy quarks through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The LBT model includes both elastic and inelastic medium-interaction of both primary jet shower partons and thermal recoil partons within perturbative QCD (pQCD). It is shown to simultaneously describe the experimental data on heavy and light flavor hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions for different centralities at RHIC and LHC energies. More detailed in…
We study the dependence of parton energy loss (quenching) on rapidity in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC. This can provides invaluable information on the density of the medium, which should be more dilute going away from mid-rapidity, thereby reducing the effect of quenching. We predict a clear effect at moderate transverse momenta $\sim$ 3 GeV.
In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons, results and predictions for inclusive hadron suppression, based upon in-medium parton shower evolution, are presented for Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV and $\sqrt{s}=2.76, \, 5.1$ ATeV, respectively. The $\rm SCET_G$ medium-induced splitting kernels are further implemented to evaluate the attenuation of reconstructed jet cross in such reactions and to examine their centrality and radius $R$ dependence. Building upon a previously developed method to systematically resum the jet sha…
Because of the rapidly falling particle spectrum at large $p_T$ from jet fragmentation at the CERN SPS energy, the high-$p_T$ hadron distribution should be highly sensitive to parton energy loss inside a dense medium as predicted by recent perturbative QCD (pQCD) studies. A careful analysis of recent data from CERN SPS experiments via pQCD calculation shows little evidence of energy loss. This implies that either the life-time of the dense partonic matter is very short or one has to re-think about the problem of parton energy loss in dense matter. The hadronic matter does not seem to cause jet…
The $p_\perp$ dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{\text{AA}}$ measured in PbPb collisions at the LHC exhibits a universal shape, which can be very well reproduced in a simple energy loss model based on the BDMPS medium-induced gluon spectrum. We update a former study by including in the analysis the recent CMS measurements on $J/ψ$ production in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV and charged hadron production in XeXe collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.44$ TeV. The average parton energy loss extracted from minimum bias XeXe collisions is reduced typically by 20% compared to PbPb collis…
We present a comprehensive review of the physics of hadron and jet production at large transverse momentum in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. Emphasis is put on experimental and theoretical "jet quenching" observables that provide direct information on the (thermo)dynamical properties of hot and dense QCD matter.
We investigate the transverse dynamics in Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV by emphasis upon the interplay between soft and hard components through p_T dependences of particle spectra, ratios of yields, suppression factors, and elliptic flow for identified hadrons. From hydrodynamics combined with traversing minijets which go through jet quenching in the hot medium, we calculate interactions of hard jets with the soft hydrodynamic components. It is shown by the explicit dynamical calculations that the hydrodynamic radial flow and the jet quenching of hard jets are the keys to understand …
I review the main experimental results on jet physics in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions as studied via inclusive leading hadron spectra and di-hadron correlations at high transverse momentum. In central Au+Au at RHIC (sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV), the observed large suppression of high-$p_T$ hadron spectra as well as the strongly modified azimuthal dijet correlations compared to baseline p+p results in free space, provide crucial information on the thermodynamical and transport properties of QCD matter.
In this paper we present with full details a systematic quantification, on an even-by-event basis, of the hard probe response to the geometry and fluctuations of the hot QCD matter created in heavy ion collisions at both the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The azimuthal anisotropy of jet quenching is extracted and decomposed as harmonic responses (for n=1,2,3,4,5,6) to the corresponding harmonics in the fluctuating initial condition. We show that such jet response harmonics are sensitive to the jet quenching models as well as to the bulk matter initi…
This contribution discusses the geometric tomography by highly energetic jets penetrating the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions from RHIC to LHC energies. In particular the geometric data on the azimuthal anisotropy of high $p_t$ hadrons discriminate different models and strongly hint at energy loss mechanism beyond those based on perturbation theory. Taking together the RHIC and LHC data, the comparison with models is in favor of the model with strong enhancement of jet quenching in near-$T_c$ matter.

We present results for the quenching, elliptic flow and azimuthal correlations of heavy flavour particles in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained through the POWLANG transport setup, developed in the past to study the propagation of heavy quarks in the Quark-Gluon Plasma and here extended to include a modeling of their hadronization in the presence of a medium. Hadronization is described as occurring via the fragmentation of strings with endpoints given by the heavy (anti-)quark Q(Qbar) and a thermal parton $qbar(q)$ from the medium. The flow of the light quarks is shown to affect s…
We present a jet quenching model within a unified multi-stage framework and demonstrate for the first time a simultaneous description of leading hadrons, inclusive jets, and elliptic flow observables which spans multiple centralities and collision energies. This highlights one of the major successes of the JETSCAPE framework in providing a tool for setting up an effective parton evolution that includes a high-virtuality radiation dominated energy loss phase (MATTER), followed by a low-virtuality scattering dominated (LBT) energy loss phase. Measurements of jet and charged-hadron $R_{AA}$ set s…

The renormalization of the weak charge-changing hadronic current as a function of the reaction energy release is studied at the nucleonic level. We have calculated the average quenching factors for each type of current (vector, axial vector and induced pseudoscalar). The obtained quenching in the axial vector part is, at zero momentum transfer, 19% for the sd shell and 23% in the fp shell. We have extended the calculations also to heavier systems such as $^{56}$Ni and $^{100}$Sn, where we obtain stronger quenchings, 44% and 59%, respectively. Gamow--Teller type transitions are discussed, along…
Explicit simulation of Au+Au collision with and without a quenching jet indicate that elliptic flow is greatly reduced in a jet event. The result can be used to identify the jet events in heavy ion collisions.
The final state energy loss of fast partons penetrating a longitudinally expanding quark-gluon plasma of effective gluon rapidity density $dN^{g}/dy=650-800$ is evaluated and incorporated together with the multiple initial state Cronin scattering in the lowest order perturbative QCD hadron production formalism. Predictions for the neutral pion attenuation in central $Au+Au$ collisions at the intermediate RHIC energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=62$ GeV relative to the binary collision scaled $p+p$ result are given. The quenching is found to be a factor of 2-3 with a moderate transverse momentum dependenc…
Jet quenching has been used successfully as a hard probe to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-collisions at both the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental measurements and their implication on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.
Non-abelian energy loss in quark gluon plasmas is shown to lead to novel hadron ratio suppression patterns in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. We apply GLV estimates for the gluon radiative energy loss. The K^-/K^+ and K^+/π^+ ratios are found to be most sensitive to the initial density of the plasma.
We study the effects of jet quenching on the hydrodynamical evolution of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) fluid created in a heavy-ion collision. In jet quenching, a hard QCD parton, before fragmenting into a jet of hadrons, deposits a fraction of its energy in the medium, leading to suppressed production of high-pT hadrons. Assuming that the deposited energy quickly thermalizes, we simulate the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP fluid. For partons moving at supersonic speed, v_p > c_s, and sufficiently large energy loss, a shock wave forms leading to conical flow [1]. The PHENIX Collabo…
The production of $π^0$, $η$, and $ϕ$ in the most central (0%-5%) Xe+Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV is investigated in the framework of the perturbative QCD (pQCD) improved parton model at an accuracy of next-to-leading order (NLO). The jet quenching effect is effectively incorporated by medium-modified fragmentation functions via the higher-twist approach. Predictions of the nuclear modification factors of $π^0$, $η$, and $ϕ$ as functions of the transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ are made with the jet transport parameter $\hat{q}_0$, which is extracted from the available experimenta…
Recent observation of high-$p_T$ hadron spectra suppression and mono-jet production in central $Au+Au$ collisions and their absence in $d+Au$ collisions at RHIC have confirmed the long predicted phenomenon of jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Detailed analyses of the experimental data also show parton energy loss as the mechanism for the discovered jet quenching. Using a pQCD parton model that incorporates medium modified parton fragmentation functions and comparing to experimental data from deeply inelastic scattering off nuclei, one can conclude that the initial gluon (energ…
We study dependence of jet quenching on matter density, using "tomography" of the fireball provided by RHIC data on azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ of high $p_t$ hadron yield at different centralities. Slicing the fireball into shells with constant (entropy) density, we derive a "layer-wise geometrical limit" $v_2^{max}$ which is indeed above the data $v_2<v_2^{max}$. Interestingly, the limit is reached only if quenching is dominated by shells with the entropy density exactly in the near-$T_c$ region. We show two models that simultaneously describe the high $p_t$ $v_2$ and $R_{AA}$ data and conclud…
Within five different approaches to parton propagation and energy loss in dense matter, a phenomenological study of experimental data on suppression of large $p_T$ single inclusive hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC was carried out. The evolution of bulk medium used in the study for parton propagation was given by 2+1D or 3+1D hydrodynamic models which are also constrained by experimental data on bulk hadron spectra. Values for the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ at the center of the most central heavy-ion collisions are extracted or calculated within each model, with parame…
One of the non-Abelian features of parton energy loss is the ratio $ΔE_g/ΔE_q=9/4$ between gluon and quark jets. Since jet production rate is dominated by quark jets at high $x_T=2p_T/\sqrt{s}$ and by gluon jets at low $x_T$, high $p_T$ hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions should reflect such a non-Abelian feature. Within a leading order perturbative QCD parton model that incorporates transverse expansion and Woods-Saxon nuclear distribution, the energy dependence of large $p_T\sim 5-20$ GeV/$c$ hadron suppression is found to be sensitive to the non-Abelian feasture of parton…
Within the picture of jet quenching induced by multiple parton scattering and gluon bremsstrahlung, medium modification of parton fragmentation functions and therefore the suppression of large transverse momentum hadron spectra are controlled by both the value and the space-time profile of the jet transport parameter along the jet propagation path. Experimental data on single hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC energy are analyzed within the higher-twist (HT) approach to the medium modified fragmentation functions and the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative …
The study of the structure of strongly interacting dense matter via hard jets is reviewed. High momentum partons produced in hard collisions produce a shower of gluons prior to undergoing the non-perturbative process of hadronization. In the presence of a dense medium this shower is modified due to scattering of the various partons off the constituents in the medium. The modified pattern of the final detected hadrons is then a probe of the structure of the medium as perceived by the jet. Starting from the factorization paradigm developed for the case of particle collisions, we review the basic…
Dijet, dihadron, hadron-jet angular correlations have been reckoned as important probes of the transverse momentum broadening effects in relativistic nuclear collisions. When a pair of high-energy jets created in hard collisions traverse the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions, they become de-correlated due to the vacuum soft gluon radiation associated with the Sudakov logarithms and the medium-induced transverse momentum broadening. For the first time, we employ the systematical resummation formalism and establish a baseline calculation to describe the dihadron and hadron-jet …
