The discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA) is a powerful tool for analyzing dynamics of quantum spin systems. Since the DTWA includes the leading-order quantum corrections to a mean-field approximation, it is naturally expected that the DTWA becomes more accurate when the range of interactions of the system increases. However, quantitative corroboration of this expectation is still lacking mainly because it is generally difficult in a large system to evaluate a timescale on which the DTWA is quantitatively valid. In order to investigate how the validity timescale depends on the interaction range, we analyze dynamics of quantum spin models with a step function type interaction subjected to a sudden quench of a magnetic field by means of both DTWA and its extension including the second-order correction, which is derived from the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon equation. We also develop a formulation for calculating the second-order Rényi entropy within the framework of the DTWA. By comparing the time evolution of the Rényi entropy computed by the DTWA with that by the extension including the correction, we find that both in the one- and two-dimensional systems the validity timescale increases algebraically with the range of the step function type interaction.
We study the transport properties of an ultracold gas of Bose-Einstein condensate that is coupled from a magnetic trap into a one-dimensional waveguide. Our theoretical approach to tackle this problem is based on the truncated Wigner method for which we assume the system to consist of two semi-infinite non-interacting leads and a finite interacting scattering region with two constrictions modelling an atomic quantum dot. The transmission is computed in the steady-state regime and we find a good agreement between truncated Wigner and Matrix-Product State calculations. We also identify clear sig…
We consider quasi-stationary scattering of interacting bosonic matter waves in one-dimensional waveguides, as they arise in guided atom lasers. We show how the truncated Wigner (tW) method, which corresponds to the semiclassical description of the bosonic many-body system on the level of the diagonal approximation, can be utilized in order to describe such many-body bosonic scattering processes. Special emphasis is put on the discretization of space at the exact quantum level, in order to properly implement the semiclassical approximation and the tW method, as well as on the discussion of the …
We theoretically study the propagation of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional disorder potential, following the principle of an atom laser. The constructive interference between time-reversed scattering paths gives rise to coherent backscattering, which may be observed under the form of a sharp cone in the disorder-averaged angular backscattered current. As is found by the numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, this coherent backscattering cone is inversed when a non-vanishing interaction strength is present, indicating a crossover from constructive to…
We develop and utilize the SU(3) truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) in order to analyze far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics of strongly interacting Bose gases in an optical lattice. Specifically, we explicitly represent the corresponding Bose--Hubbard model at an arbitrary filling factor with restricted local Hilbert spaces in terms of SU(3) matrices. Moreover, we introduce a discrete Wigner sampling technique for the SU(3) TWA and examine its performance as well as that of the SU(3) TWA with the Gaussian approximation for the continuous Wigner function. We directly compare outputs of thes…
We discuss stochastic phase-space methods within the truncated Wigner approximation and show explicitly that they can be used to solve non-equilibrium dynamics of bosonic atoms in one-dimensional traps. We consider systems both with and without an optical lattice, and address different approximations in the stochastic synthesization of quantum statistical correlations of the initial atomic field. We also present a numerically efficient projection method for analyzing correlation functions of the simulation results, and demonstrate physical examples of non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of solito…
The truncated Wigner approximation is an established approach that describes the dynamics of weakly interacting Bose gases beyond the mean-field level. Although it allows a quantum field to be expressed by a stochastic c-number field, the simulation of the time evolution is still very demanding for most applications. Here, we develop a numerically inexpensive approximation by decomposing the c-number field into a variational ansatz function and a residual field. The dynamics of the ansatz function is described by a tractable set of coupled ordinary stochastic differential equations for the res…
We present a systematic approach for the semiclassical treatment of many-body dynamics of interacting, open spin systems. Our approach overcomes some of the shortcomings of the recently developed discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA) based on Monte-Carlo sampling in a discrete phase space that improves the classical treatment by accounting for lowest-order quantum fluctuations. We provide a rigorous derivation of the DTWA by embedding it in a continuous phase space, thereby introducing a hybrid discrete-continuous truncated Wigner approximation (DCTWA). We derive a set of operator-dif…
The quantum phase transition from the Mott insulator state to the superfluid in the Bose-Hubbard model is investigated. We research one, two and three dimensional lattices in the truncated Wigner approximation. We compute both kinetic and potential energy and they turn out to have a power law behaviour as a function of the transition rate, with the power equal to 1/3. The same applies to the total energy in a system with a harmonic trap, which is usually present in the experimental set-up. These observations are in agreement with the experiment of [8], where such scalings were also observed an…
The semi-classical discrete truncated Wigner approximation (dTWA) has recently been proposed as a simulation method for spin-$1/2$ systems. While it appears to provide a powerful approach which shows promising results in higher dimensions and for systems with long-range interactions, its performance is still not well understood in general. Here we perform a systematic benchmark on the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model and point to limitations of the approximation arising after sudden quenches into the quantum critical regime. Our procedure allows to identify the limitations of the s…
We study the effect of quantum fluctuations on the dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose gas in an optical lattice at zero-temperature using the truncated Wigner approximation with a variety of basis sets for the initial fluctuation modes. The initial spatial distributions of the quantum fluctuations are very different when using a limited number of plane-wave (PW), simple-harmonic-oscillator (SHO) and self-consistently determined Bogoliubov (SCB) modes. The short-time transport properties of the Bose gas, characterized by the phase coherence in the PW basis are distinct from those gained u…
By means of the discrete truncated Wigner approximation we study dynamical phase transitions arising in the steady state of transverse-field Ising models after a quantum quench. Starting from a fully polarized ferromagnetic initial condition these transitions separate a phase with nonvanishing magnetization along the ordering direction from a symmetric phase upon increasing the transverse field. We consider two paradigmatic cases, a one-dimensional long-range model with power-law interactions $\propto 1/r^α$ decaying algebraically as a function of distance $r$ and a two-dimensional system with…
We present a general method by which linear quantum Hamiltonian dynamics with exponentially many degrees of freedom is replaced by approximate classical nonlinear dynamics with the number of degrees of freedom (phase space dimensionality) scaling polynomially in the system size. This method is based on generalization of the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) to a higher dimensional phase space, where phase space variables are associated with a complete set of quantum operators spanning finite size clusters. The method becomes asymptotically exact with the increasing cluster size. The crucial…
Although highly successful, the Truncated Wigner Approximation (TWA) does not account for genuine many-body quantum interference between different solutions of the mean-field equations of a bosonic many-body (MB) system. This renders the TWA essentially classical, where a large number of particles formally takes the role of the inverse of Planck's constant $\hbar$. The failure to describe genuine interference phenomena, such as localization and scarring in Fock space, can be seen as a virtue of this quasiclassical method, which thereby allows one to identify genuine quantum effects when being …
In this work we present the formal background used to develop the methods used in earlier works to extend the truncated Wigner representation of quantum and atom optics in order to address multi-time problems. The truncated Wigner representation has proven to be of great practical use, especially in the numerical study of the quantum dynamics of Bose condensed gases. In these cases, it allows for the simulation of effects which are missed entirely by other approximations, such as the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, but does not suffer from the severe instabilities of more exact methods. The numeric…
Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics occur in a wide range of chemical reactions and femtochemistry experiments involving electronically excited states. These dynamics are hard to treat numerically as the system's complexity increases and it is thus desirable to have accurate yet affordable methods for their simulation. Here, we introduce a linearized semiclassical method, the generalized discrete truncated Wigner approximation (GDTWA), which is well-established in the context of quantum spin lattice systems, into the arena of chemical nonadiabatic systems. In contrast to traditional continuous map…
We study the transport of an interacting Bose--Einstein condensate through a 1D correlated disorder potential. We use for this purpose the truncated Wigner method, which is, as we show, corresponding to the diagonal approximation of a semiclassical van Vleck-Gutzwiller representation of this many-body transport process. We also argue that semiclassical corrections beyond this diagonal approximation are vanishing under disorder average, thus confirming the validity of the truncated Wigner method in this context. Numerical calculations show that, while for weak atom-atom interaction strength And…
We compare the continuous and discrete truncated Wigner approximations of various spin models' dynamics to exact analytical and numerical solutions. We account for all components of spin-spin correlations on equal footing, facilitated by a recently introduced geometric correlation matrix visualization technique [R. Mukherjee {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 97}, 043606 (2018)]. We find that at modestly short times, the dominant error in both approximations is to substantially suppress spin correlations along one direction.
We have studied the interaction between multiple, competing spatial modes that are excited by a quantum quench of an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. We observed Hanbury Brown-Twiss correlations and associated super-Poissonian noise in the mode populations. The decay of these correlations was consistent with experimentally observed spin domain patterns. Data were compared with a real-space Bogoliubov theory as well as numerical solution of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations that were seeded by quantum noise via the truncated Wigner approximation. The spatial modes that we…
We consider the dynamics of a quantum impurity after a sudden interaction quench into a one-dimensional degenerate Bose gas. We use the Keldysh path integral formalism to derive a truncated Wigner like approach that takes the back action of the impurity onto the condensate into account already on the mean-field level and further incorporates thermal and quantum effects up to one-loop accuracy. This framework enables us not only to calculate the real space trajectory of the impurity but also the absorption spectrum. We find that quantum corrections and thermal effects play a crucial role for th…
We study the dynamics of the relative phase of a bilayer of two-dimensional superfluids after the two superfluids have been decoupled, using truncated Wigner approximation. On short time scales the relative phase shows "light cone" like thermalization and creates a metastable superfluid state, which can be supercritical. On longer time scales this state relaxes to a disordered state due to dynamical vortex unbinding. This scenario of dynamically suppressed vortex proliferation constitutes a {\it reverse-Kibble-Zurek effect}. We observe dynamics of creation of vortex anti-vortex pairs and their…
We investigate the real-time evolution of lattice bosons in two spatial dimensions whose dynamics is governed by a Markovian quantum master equation. We employ the Wigner-Weyl phase space quantization and derive the functional integral for open quantum many-body systems that governs the time evolution of the Wigner function. Using the truncated Wigner approximation, in which quantum fluctuations are only taken into account in the initial state whereas the dynamics is governed by classical evolution equations, we study the buildup of long-range correlations due to the action of non-Hermitean qu…
We consider quantum quenches of harmonically trapped one-dimensional bosons from repulsive to attractive interactions, and the resulting breathing dynamics of the so-called `super-Tonks-Girardeau' (sTG) state. This state is highly excited compared to the ground state of the attractive gas, and is the lowest eigenstate where the particles are not bound or clustered. We analyze the dynamics from a spectral point of view, identifying the relevant eigenstates of the interacting trapped many-body system, and analyzing the nature of these quantum eigenstates. To obtain explicit eigenspectra, we use …
We develop a method of simulating the full quantum field dynamics of multi-mode multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap. We use the truncated Wigner representation to obtain a probabilistic theory that can be sampled. This method produces c-number stochastic equations which may be solved using conventional stochastic methods. The technique is valid for large mode occupation numbers. We give a detailed derivation of methods of functional Wigner representation appropriate for quantum fields. Our approach describes spatial evolution of spinor components and properly accounts for nonli…
An optical-lattice quantum simulator is an ideal experimental platform to investigate non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum many-body system, which is in general hard to simulate with classical computers. Here, we use our quantum simulator of the Bose-Hubbard model to study dynamics far from equilibrium after a quantum quench. We successfully confirm the energy conservation law in the one- and three-dimensional systems and extract the propagation velocity of the single-particle correlation in the one- and two-dimensional systems. We corroborate the validity of our quantum simulator through qua…
We study a system of few fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, and focus on the case of dipolar majority particles in contact with a single impurity. The impurity is used both for quenching the system, and for tracking the system evolution after the quench. Employing exact diagonalization, we investigate relaxation and thermalization properties. In the absence of dipolar interactions, the system is near integrability, and the dynamics remains oscillatory even on long time scales. On the other hand, repulsive as well as attractive dipolar interactions lead to quick relaxation to the diag…
We present a theoretical study of the quantum depletion of microcavity polaritons that are excited with a resonant laser pulse. The dynamics of the quantum fluctuations are interpreted in the context of quantum quenches in general and in terms of the dynamical Casimir effect in particular. We compute the time evolution of the first and second order correlation functions of the polariton condensate. Our theoretical modelling is based on the truncated Wigner approximation for interacting Bose gases. For homogeneous systems, analytical results are obtained in the linearised Bogoliubov approximati…
We study a linear ramp of the nearest-neighbor tunneling rate in the Bose-Hubbard model driving the system from the Mott insulator state into the superfluid phase. We employ the truncated Wigner approximation to simulate linear quenches of a uniform system in 1,2, and 3 dimensions, and in a harmonic trap in 3 dimensions. In all these setups the excitation energy decays like one over third root of the quench time. The -1/3 scaling arises from an impulse-adiabatic approximation - a variant of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism - describing a crossover from non-adiabatic to adiabatic evolution when the s…
We formulate the time-dependent Bogoliubov dynamics of colliding Bose-Einstein condensates in terms of a positive-P representation of the Bogoliubov field. We obtain stochastic evolution equations for the field which converge to the full Bogoliubov description as the number of realisations grows. The numerical effort grows linearly with the size of the computational lattice. We benchmark the efficiency and accuracy of our description against Wigner distribution and exact positive-P methods. We consider its regime of applicability, and show that it is the most efficient method in the common sit…
We study the phase-space representation of dynamics of bosons in the semiclassical regime where the occupation number of the modes is large. To this end, we employ the van Vleck-Gutzwiller propagator to obtain an approximation for the Green's function of the Wigner distribution. The semiclassical analysis incorporates interference of classical paths and reduces to the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) when the interference is ignored. Furthermore, we identify the Ehrenfest time after which the TWA fails. As a case study, we consider a single-mode quantum nonlinear oscillator, which displays…
Using a Luttinger liquid theory we investigate the time evolution of the particle density of a one-dimensional spinful fermionic system with open boundaries and subject to a finite-duration quench of the inter-particle interaction. Taking into account also the turning on of an umklapp perturbation to the system Hamiltonian as a result of the quench, we study the possible formation of a Wigner molecule inside the system, focusing in particular on the sudden and adiabatic regimes. We show that the creation of this correlated state is essentially due to the propagation of "light-cone" perturbatio…
In this work, which is based on our previously derived theoretical framework [1], we apply the truncated Born-Bogoliubov-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy for ultracold bosonic systems with a fixed number of particles to two out-of-equilibrium scenarios, namely tunneling in a double-well potential and an interaction quench in a harmonic trap. The efficient formulation of the theory provided in [1] allows for going to large truncation orders such that the impact of the truncation order on the accuracy of the results can be systematically explored. While the short-time dynamics is found to b…
By studying the coarsening dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model in a superfluid regime, we analytically find an unconventional universal dynamical scaling for the growth of the spin correlation length, which is characterized by the exponential integral unlike the conventional power-law or simple logarithmic behavior, and numerically confirmed with the truncated Wigner approximation.
We demonstrate the role of interactions in driving the relaxation of an isolated integrable quantum system following a sudden quench. We consider a family of integrable hard-core lattice anyon models that continuously interpolates between noninteracting spinless fermions and strongly interacting hard-core bosons. A generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation maps the entire family to noninteracting fermions. We find that, aside from the singular free-fermion limit, the entire single-particle density matrix and therefore all one-body observables relax to the predictions of the generalized Gibbs en…
In this work we look at the quantum dynamics of the process known as either transport without transit (TWT), or coherent transfer of atomic population (CTAP), of a Bose-Einstein condensate from one well of a lattice potential to another, non-adjacent well, without macroscopic occupation of the well between the two. This process has previously been analysed and in this work we extend those analyses by considering the effects of quantum statistics on the dynamics and entanglement properties of the condensate modes in the two relevant wells. In order to do this, we go beyond the mean-field analys…
We discuss the non-equilibrium time evolution of the phase field in the sine-Gordon model using two very different approaches: the truncated Wigner approximation and the truncated conformal space approach. We demonstrate that the two approaches agree for a period covering the first few oscillations, thereby giving a solid theoretical prediction in the framework of sine-Gordon model, which is thought to describe the dynamics of two bosonic condensates in quasi-one-dimensional traps coupled via a Josephson tunneling term. We conclude, however, that the recently observed phase-locking behavior ca…
We analyze the time evolution of the Bose-Hubbard model after a sudden quantum quench to a weakly interacting regime. Specifically, motivated by a recent experiment at Kyoto University, we numerically simulate redistribution of the kinetic and onsite-interaction energies at an early time, which was observed in non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold Bose gases in a cubic optical lattice starting with a singly-occupied Mott-insulator state. In order to compute the short-time dynamics corresponding to the experimental situation, we apply the truncated-Wigner approximation (TWA) to the Bose-Hubbard…
The truncated Wigner and positive-P phase-space representations are used to study the dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas. This allows calculations of the breathing quantum dynamics of higher-order solitons with 10^{3}-10^{5} particles, as in realistic Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) experiments. Although classically stable, these decay quantum mechanically. Our calculations show that there are large nonlocal correlations. These also violate the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, showing the presence of nonclassical quantum entanglement.
We study the dynamics of the relative phase of a bilayer of two-dimensional superfluids after the two superfluids have been decoupled. We find that on short time scales the relative phase shows "light cone" like dynamics and creates a metastable superfluid state, which can be supercritical. We also demonstrate similar light cone dynamics for the transverse field Ising model. On longer time scales the supercritical state relaxes to a disordered state due to dynamical vortex unbinding. This scenario of dynamically suppressed vortex proliferation constitutes a reverse-Kibble-Zurek effect. We stud…
We consider the dynamics of an impurity atom immersed in an ideal Fermi gas at zero temperature. We focus on the coherent quantum evolution of the impurity following a quench to strong impurity-fermion interactions, where the interactions are assumed to be short range like in cold-atom experiments. To approximately model the many-body time evolution, we use a truncated basis method, where at most two particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea are included. When the system is initially non-interacting, we show that our method exactly captures the short-time dynamics following the quench, and we…
The goal of this master thesis is to give a different perspective on the problem of quasi-particle tunneling in Fractional Quantum Hall liquids by using a typical Quantum Optics tool such as the Truncated Wigner Approximation. Our novel approach provides a mapping of the quasi-particle tunneling problem into a stochastic classical field problem. This offers an intuitive physical picture which allows us to recover non-trivial features of FQH physics and predict novel phenomena.
We discuss a phase space representation of quantum dynamics of systems with many degrees of freedom. This representation is based on a perturbative expansion in quantum fluctuations around one of the classical limits. We explicitly analyze expansions around three such limits: (i) corpuscular or Newtonian limit in the coordinate-momentum representation, (ii) wave or Gross-Pitaevskii limit for interacting bosons in the coherent state representation, and (iii) Bloch limit for the spin systems. We discuss both the semiclassical (truncated Wigner) approximation and further quantum corrections appea…
