To address semi-supervised learning from both labeled and unlabeled data, we present a novel meta-learning scheme. We particularly consider that labeled and unlabeled data share disjoint ground truth label sets, which can be seen tasks like in person re-identification or image retrieval. Our learning scheme exploits the idea of leveraging information from labeled to unlabeled data. Instead of fitting the associated class-wise similarity scores as most meta-learning algorithms do, we propose to derive semantics-oriented similarity representations from labeled data, and transfer such representation to unlabeled ones. Thus, our strategy can be viewed as a self-supervised learning scheme, which can be applied to fully supervised learning tasks for improved performance. Our experiments on various tasks and settings confirm the effectiveness of our proposed approach and its superiority over the state-of-the-art methods.

We consider the problem of complementary fashion prediction. Existing approaches focus on learning an embedding space where fashion items from different categories that are visually compatible are closer to each other. However, creating such labeled outfits is intensive and also not feasible to generate all possible outfit combinations, especially with large fashion catalogs. In this work, we propose a semi-supervised learning approach where we leverage large unlabeled fashion corpus to create pseudo-positive and pseudo-negative outfits on the fly during training. For each labeled outfit in a …
In this paper, we utilize deep visual Representation Learning to address an important problem in fashion e-commerce: color variants identification, i.e., identifying fashion products that match exactly in their design (or style), but only to differ in their color. At first we attempt to tackle the problem by obtaining manual annotations (depicting whether two products are color variants), and train a supervised triplet loss based neural network model to learn representations of fashion products. However, for large scale real-world industrial datasets such as addressed in our paper, it is infea…

In this paper, we address a crucial problem in fashion e-commerce (with respect to customer experience, as well as revenue): color variants identification, i.e., identifying fashion products that match exactly in their design (or style), but only to differ in their color. We propose a generic framework, that leverages deep visual Representation Learning at its heart, to address this problem for our fashion e-commerce platform. Our framework could be trained with supervisory signals in the form of triplets, that are obtained manually. However, it is infeasible to obtain manual annotations for t…
With a growing demand for the search by image, many works have studied the task of fashion instance-level image retrieval (FIR). Furthermore, the recent works introduce a concept of fashion attribute manipulation (FAM) which manipulates a specific attribute (e.g color) of a fashion item while maintaining the rest of the attributes (e.g shape, and pattern). In this way, users can search not only "the same" items but also "similar" items with the desired attributes. FAM is a challenging task in that the attributes are hard to define, and the unique characteristics of a query are hard to be prese…
This work tackles the problem of semi-supervised learning of image classifiers. Our main insight is that the field of semi-supervised learning can benefit from the quickly advancing field of self-supervised visual representation learning. Unifying these two approaches, we propose the framework of self-supervised semi-supervised learning and use it to derive two novel semi-supervised image classification methods. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods in comparison to both carefully tuned baselines, and existing semi-supervised learning methods. We then show that our approach and exi…
Consistency regularization describes a class of approaches that have yielded state-of-the-art results for semi-supervised classification. While semi-supervised semantic segmentation proved to be more challenging, a number of successful approaches have been recently proposed. Recent work explored the challenges involved in using consistency regularization for segmentation problems. In their self-supervised work Chen et al. found that colour augmentation prevents a classification network from using image colour statistics as a short-cut for self-supervised learning via instance discrimination. Recently self supervised learning has seen explosive growth and use in variety of machine learning tasks because of its ability to avoid the cost of annotating large-scale datasets. This paper gives an overview for best self supervised learning approaches for multimodal learning. The presented approaches have been aggregated by extensive study of the literature and tackle the application of self supervised learning in different ways. The approaches discussed are cross modal generation, cross modal pretraining, cyclic translation, and generating unimodal labels in self supervised fashion.
This paper introduces SelfMatch, a semi-supervised learning method that combines the power of contrastive self-supervised learning and consistency regularization. SelfMatch consists of two stages: (1) self-supervised pre-training based on contrastive learning and (2) semi-supervised fine-tuning based on augmentation consistency regularization. We empirically demonstrate that SelfMatch achieves the state-of-the-art results on standard benchmark datasets such as CIFAR-10 and SVHN. For example, for CIFAR-10 with 40 labeled examples, SelfMatch achieves 93.19% accuracy that outperforms the strong p…

We propose a compact framework with guided attention for multi-label classification in the fashion domain. Our visual semantic attention model (VSAM) is supervised by automatic pose extraction creating a discriminative feature space. VSAM outperforms the state of the art for an in-house dataset and performs on par with previous works on the DeepFashion dataset, even without using any landmark annotations. Additionally, we show that our semantic attention module brings robustness to large quantities of wrong annotations and provides more interpretable results.
With the rapid development of social websites, recent years have witnessed an explosive growth of social images with user-provided tags which continuously arrive in a streaming fashion. Due to the fast query speed and low storage cost, hashing-based methods for image search have attracted increasing attention. However, existing hashing methods for social image retrieval are based on batch mode which violates the nature of social images, i.e., social images are usually generated periodically or collected in a stream fashion. Although there exist many online image hashing methods, they either ad…

We used the Ladder Network [Rasmus et al. (2015)] to perform Hyperspectral Image Classification in a semi-supervised setting. The Ladder Network distinguishes itself from other semi-supervised methods by jointly optimizing a supervised and unsupervised cost. In many settings this has proven to be more successful than other semi-supervised techniques, such as pretraining using unlabeled data. We furthermore show that the convolutional Ladder Network outperforms most of the current techniques used in hyperspectral image classification and achieves new state-of-the-art performance on the Pavia Un…

We present a plug-in replacement for batch normalization (BN) called exponential moving average normalization (EMAN), which improves the performance of existing student-teacher based self- and semi-supervised learning techniques. Unlike the standard BN, where the statistics are computed within each batch, EMAN, used in the teacher, updates its statistics by exponential moving average from the BN statistics of the student. This design reduces the intrinsic cross-sample dependency of BN and enhances the generalization of the teacher. EMAN improves strong baselines for self-supervised learning by…
We study Online Continual Learning with missing labels and propose SemiCon, a new contrastive loss designed for partly labeled data. We demonstrate its efficiency by devising a memory-based method trained on an unlabeled data stream, where every data added to memory is labeled using an oracle. Our approach outperforms existing semi-supervised methods when few labels are available, and obtain similar results to state-of-the-art supervised methods while using only 2.6% of labels on Split-CIFAR10 and 10% of labels on Split-CIFAR100.

We evaluate the performance of our semi-supervised framework on a public dataset. The evaluation results demonstrate that our semi-supervised approach significantly outperforms supervised frameworks thereby substan…

Multimodal tasks in the fashion domain have significant potential for e-commerce, but involve challenging vision-and-language learning problems - e.g., retrieving a fashion item given a reference image plus text feedback from a user. Prior works on multimodal fashion tasks have either been limited by the data in individual benchmarks, or have leveraged generic vision-and-language pre-training but have not taken advantage of the characteristics of fashion data. Additionally, these works have mainly been restricted to multimodal understanding tasks. To address these gaps, we make two key contrib…

Nonnegative matrix factorization can be used to automatically detect topics within a corpus in an unsupervised fashion. The technique amounts to an approximation of a nonnegative matrix as the product of two nonnegative matrices of lower rank. In this paper, we show this factorization can be combined with regression on a continuous response variable. In practice, the method performs better than regression done after topics are identified and retrains interpretability.

Training deep neural networks for image recognition often requires large-scale human annotated data. To reduce the reliance of deep neural solutions on labeled data, state-of-the-art semi-supervised methods have been proposed in the literature. Nonetheless, the use of such semi-supervised methods has been quite rare in the field of facial expression recognition (FER). In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on recently proposed state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning methods in the context of FER. We conduct comparative study on eight semi-supervised learning methods, namely Pi-Model…
In a series of papers by Dai and colleagues [1,2], a feature map (or kernel) was introduced for semi- and unsupervised learning. This feature map is build from the output of an ensemble of classifiers trained without using the ground-truth class labels. In this critique, we analyze the latest version of this series of papers, which is called Ensemble Projections [2]. We show that the results reported in [2] were not well conducted, and that Ensemble Projections performs poorly for semi-supervised learning.
EEG-based emotion recognition often requires sufficient labeled training samples to build an effective computational model. Labeling EEG data, on the other hand, is often expensive and time-consuming. To tackle this problem and reduce the need for output labels in the context of EEG-based emotion recognition, we propose a semi-supervised pipeline to jointly exploit both unlabeled and labeled data for learning EEG representations. Our semi-supervised framework consists of both unsupervised and supervised components. The unsupervised part maximizes the consistency between original and reconstruc…

Supervised learning methods have been suffering from the fact that a large-scale labeled dataset is mandatory, which is difficult to obtain. This has been a more significant issue for fashion compatibility prediction because compatibility aims to capture people's perception of aesthetics, which are sparse and changing. Thus, the labeled dataset may become outdated quickly due to fast fashion. Moreover, labeling the dataset always needs some expert knowledge; at least they should have a good sense of aesthetics. However, there are limited self/semi-supervised learning techniques in this field. …

We propose to employ visual data to infer size and fit characteristics of fashion articles. We introduce SizeNet, a weakly-supervised teacher-student training framework that leverages the power of …
Many self-supervised learning (SSL) methods have been successful in learning semantically meaningful visual representations by solving pretext tasks. Thus, these SSL methods perform poorly on downstream tasks where these concepts provide critical information. In this paper, we present an SSL framework that enables us to learn color and texture-aware features without requiring any labels during t…

The task of continual learning requires careful design of algorithms that can tackle catastrophic forgetting. However, the noisy label, which is inevitable in a real-world scenario, seems to exacerbate the situation. While very few studies have addressed the issue of continual learning under noisy labels, long training time and complicated training schemes limit their applications in most cases. In contrast, we propose a simple purification technique to effectively cleanse the online data stream that is both cost-effective and more accurate. The remarkable success of today's deep neural networks highly depends on a massive number of correctly labeled data. However, it is rather costly to obtain high-quality human-labeled data, leading to the active research area of training models robust to noisy labels. To achieve this goal, on the one hand, many papers have been dedicated to differentiating noisy labels from clean ones to increase the generalization of DNN. On the other hand, the increasingly prevalent methods of self-semi-supervised learning have been proven to benefit the tasks when labels are incomplete. By 'semi' we regard t…
Semi-supervised learning has been gaining attention as it allows for performing image analysis tasks such as classification with limited labeled data. Some popular algorithms using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for semi-supervised classification share a single architecture for classification and discrimination. However, this may require a model to converge to a separate data distribution for each task, which may reduce overall performance. While progress in semi-supervised learning has been made, less addressed are small-scale, fully-supervised tasks where even unlabeled data is unava…
We propose a new strategy to improve the accuracy and robustness of image classification. First, we train a baseline CNN model. Then, we identify challenging regions in the feature space by identifying all misclassified samples, and correctly classified samples with low confidence values. Learning from data sequentially arriving, possibly in a non i.i.d. way, with changing task distribution over time is called continual learning. Much of the work thus far in continual learning focuses on supervised learning and some recent works on unsupervised learning. In many domains, each task contains a mix of labelled (typically very few) and unlabelled (typically plenty) training examples, which necessitates a semi-supervised learning approach. To address this in a continual learning setting, we propose a framework for semi-supervised continual learning called Meta-Consolidation for Cont…
Recent advances in semi-supervised learning have shown tremendous potential in overcoming a major barrier to the success of modern machine learning algorithms: access to vast amounts of human-labeled training data. Previous algorithms based on consistency regularization can harness the abundance of unlabeled data to produce impressive results on a number of semi-supervised benchmarks, approaching the performance of strong supervised baselines using only a fraction of the available labeled data. In this work, we challenge the long-standing success of consistency regularization by introducing se…

At the semi-supervised fine-tuning stage, we adopt an exponential moving average (EMA)-Teacher framework instead of the popular FixMatch, since the former is more stable and delivers higher accuracy for semi-supervised vision transformers. We introduce the SaaS Algorithm for semi-supervised learning, which uses learning speed during stochastic gradient descent in a deep neural network to measure the quality of an iterative estimate of the posterior probability of unknown labels. Training speed in supervised learning correlates strongly with the percentage of correct labels, so we use it as an inference criterion for the unknown labels, without attempting to infer the model parameters at first. Despite its simplicity, SaaS achieves state-of-the-art results in semi-supervised learning benchmarks.
One of the greatest obstacles in the adoption of deep neural networks for new applications is that training the network typically requires a large number of manually labeled training samples. We consider the problem of semi-supervised 3D action recognition which has been rarely explored before. Its major challenge lies in how to effectively learn motion representations from unlabeled data. Self-supervised learning (SSL) has been proved very effective at learning representations from unlabeled data in the image domain. However, few effective self-supervised approaches exist for 3D action recognition, and directly applying SSL for semi-supervised learning suffers from misalignment of representations learned from SSL and supervised learning tasks.
