In many extensions of the Standard Model the Higgs boson can decay into two light scalars each of which then subsequently decay into two photons. The underlying event is h $\to$ 4$γ$, but the kinematics from boosted light scalar decays combined with realistic detector resolutions may fail to register the events in straightforward categories and thus may be lost. In this article we investigate the phase space for highly boosted di-photon events from these exotic Higgs decays and discuss search strategies that aim to capture and label events in this difficult region. In the process we develop a new category, $ξ$-jets, which identifies with high selectivity highly collimated di-photon decay modes of the Higgs boson.
The Higgs boson may decay predominantly into a hidden sector, producing lepton jets instead of the standard Higgs signatures. We propose a search strategy for such a signal at hadron colliders. A promising channel is the associated production of the Higgs with a Z or W, where the dominant background is Z or W plus QCD jets. The lepton jets can be discriminated from QCD jets by cutting on the electromagnetic fraction and charge ratio. The former is the fraction of jet energy deposited in the electromagnetic calorimeter and the latter is the ratio of energy carried by charged particles to the el…
The production of both charged and neutral electroweak gauge bosons in association with $b$ jets has attracted a lot of experimental and theoretical attention in recent years because of its central role in the physics programs of both the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The improved level of accuracy achieved both in the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of these processes can promote crucial developments in modeling $b$-quark jets and $b$-quark parton distribution functions, and can provide a more accurate description of some of the most important bac…
We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the pair production of W-bosons in association with two jets at the Tevatron and the LHC. This process is an important background to heavy Higgs-boson production in association with two jets, either in gluon or weak boson fusion. We consider leptonic decays of W-bosons and include all the spin correlations exactly. For natural choices of the renormalization scale, the NLO QCD corrections to pp(ppbar) -> W^+W^-jj are moderate but different for various values of the center-of-mass collision energy at the LHC and the Tevatron, emphasizing the need to compute …
O(100 GeV) physics beyond the standard model (BSM) could be overlooked provided that it is hidden in the untouched Higgs sector or jets. The top quark forward-backward asymmetry measurements and di-jet bump, which is observed in the associated production with charged lepton plus missing energy (supposed arising from W decay), may indicate the existence of a new color-octet axial-vector Z_C with a mass about 145 GeV. Here Z_C only decays into two jets. In this paper we investigated the possibility to discover Z_C pair via analyzing the four jets as the final states, which are heavily polluted b…
The start of the physics program at the LHC has added great impetus in the development of powerful theoretical tools to meet the many challenges that this collider brings. The production of jets and weak vector bosons is at the center of most analyses, from machine performance to new physics searches. In this talk we review some recent advances in the study of jets, in the computation of quantum corrections to processes with large jet multiplicity and their impact in W/Z+jets and W/Z+b-jets production at the Tevatron and the LHC.
We present the computation of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to di-photon production in association with two or three hard jets in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The inclusion of NLO corrections is shown to substantially reduce the theoretical uncertainties estimated from scale variations on total cross section predictions. We study a range of differential distributions relevant for phenomenological studies of photon pair production in association with jets at the LHC. Using an efficient computational set-up we performed a detailed study of uncertainties due to…
Two Higgs doublet extensions of the standard model, such as supersymmetry, predict the existence of charged Higgs bosons. We explore the reach for TeV-scale charged Higgs bosons through their associated production with top quarks, and their decay to boosted top jets and $μ_x$ tagged boosted bottom jets, at a 14 TeV CERN Large Hadron Collider and at a 100 TeV Future Circular Collider. In particular, we show the moderate $\tanβ$ "wedge" region of parameter space cannot be probed at the Large Hadron Collider for TeV-scale $H^\pm$ because the cross section is too small. However, a 100 TeV future p…
I present an analysis of fully differential single-top-quark production plus jets at next-to-leading order. I describe the effects of jet definitions, top-quark mass, and higher orders on the shapes and normalizations of the kinematic distributions, and quantify all theoretical uncertainties. I explain how to interpret next-to-leading-order jet calculations, and compare them to showering event generators. Using the program ZTOP, I show that HERWIG and PYTHIA significantly underestimate both s-channel and t-channel single-top-quark production, and propose a scheme to match the relevant samples …
Sterile neutrinos, if they exist, are potential harbingers for physics beyond the Standard Model. They have the capacity to shed light on our flavor sector, grand unification frameworks, dark matter sector and origins of baryon anti-baryon asymmetry. There have been a few seminal studies that have broached the subject of sterile neutrinos with low, electroweak-scale masses (i.e. $Λ_{\text{\tiny{QCD}}} \ll m_{N_R} \ll m_{W^\pm}$) and investigated their reach at hadron colliders using lepton jets. These preliminary studies nevertheless assume background-free scenarios after certain selection cri…
The mono-jet search, looking for events involving missing transverse energy (MET) plus one or two jets, is the most prominent collider dark matter search. We show that multi-jet searches, which look for MET plus two or more jets, are significantly more sensitive than the mono-jet search for pseudoscalar- and scalar-mediated interactions. We demonstrate this in the context of a simplified model with a pseudoscalar interaction that explains the excess in GeV energy gamma rays observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We show that multi-jet searches already constrain a pseudoscalar interpretati…
We estimate the future sensitivity of the high luminosity (HL-) and high energy (HE-) modes of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and of a 100 TeV future circular collider (FCC-hh) to leptoquark (LQ) pair production in the muon-plus-jet decay mode of each LQ. Such LQs are motivated by the fact they provide an explanation for the neutral current $B-$anomalies. For each future collider, Standard Model (SM) backgrounds and detector effects are simulated. From these, sensitivities of each collider are found. Our measures of sensitivity are based upon a Run II ATLAS search, which we also use for valid…
Even though jet substructure was not an original design consideration for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments, it has emerged as an essential tool for the current physics program. We examine the role of jet substructure on the motivation for and design of future energy frontier colliders. In particular, we discuss the need for a vibrant theory and experimental research and development program to extend jet substructure physics into the new regimes probed by future colliders. Jet substructure has organically evolved with a close connection between theorists and experimentalists and has …
We calculate the subjet rates for jets produced in hadron collisions. The kt algorithm is used to define the jets and allows the theoretical calculation to sum both the leading and next-to-leading logarithms in the resolution variable, ycut. We also ensure that our calculation matches exactly the leading order in alpha_s result and has sensible behaviour near thresholds.
We study photoproduction of jets and heavy flavors in a polarized collider mode of HERA and in polarized $ep$ collisions at $\sqrt{S}\approx 30$ GeV. We examine the sensitivity of the cross sections and their asymmetries to the proton's polarized gluon distribution and to the completely unknown parton distributions of longitudinally polarized photons.
Results from the study of hadronic jets in hadron-hadron collisions at order $α_s^3$ in perturbation theory are presented. The focus is on various features of the internal structure of jets. The numerical results of the calculation are compared with data where possible and exhibit reasonable agreement.
Recent progress in the perturbative analysis of hadronic jets, especially in the context of hadron colliders, is discussed. The characteristic feature of this work is the emergence of a level of precision in the study of the strong interactions far beyond that previously possible. Inclusive cross sections for high energy jets at the Tevatron are now perturbatively calculable with a reliability on the order of 10%. At present this theoretical precision is comparable to the quoted experimental errors. Progress has also been made towards understanding both the internal structure of jets and the i…
We introduce jet topics: a framework to identify underlying classes of jets from collider data. Because of a close mathematical relationship between distributions of observables in jets and emergent themes in sets of documents, we can apply recent techniques in "topic modeling" to extract jet topics from data with minimal or no input from simulation or theory. As a proof of concept with parton shower samples, we apply jet topics to determine separate quark and gluon jet distributions for constituent multiplicity. We also determine separate quark and gluon rapidity spectra from a mixed Z-plus-j…
In modern technicolor models, there exist very narrow spin-zero and spin-one neutral technihadrons---$pi^0_T$, $rho^0_T$ and $omega_T$---with masses of a few 100 GeV. The large coupling of $π^0_T$ to $μ^+μ^-$, the direct coupling of $rho^0_T$ and $omega_T$ to the photon and $Z^0$, and the superb energy resolution of the First Muon Collider may make it possible to resolve these technihadrons and produce them at extraordinarily large rates.
Precise measurements of the mass of the $W$ boson are important to test the overall consistency of the Standard Model of particle physics. The current best measurements of the $W$ boson mass come from single production measurements at hadron colliders in its decay mode to a lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino and pair production of $W$ bosons at lepton colliders, where also the decay mode of the $W$ boson to hadrons has been considered. In this study, prospects for a measurement of the $W$ boson mass in the all-jet final state at hadron colliders are presented. The feasibility of this mea…
We discuss the prospects of using jets as precision probes in electron-nucleus collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Jets produced in deep-inelastic scattering can be calibrated by a measurement of the scattered electron. Such electron-jet "tag and probe" measurements call for an approach that is orthogonal to most HERA jet measurements as well as previous studies of jets at the future EIC. We present observables such as the electron-jet momentum balance, azimuthal correlations and jet substructure, which can provide constraints on the parton transport coefficient in nuclei. We compa…
In this paper, we report our results on charged hadron multiplicities of heavy quark initiated jets produced in high energy collisions. After implementing the so-called dead cone effect in QCD evolution equations, we find that the average multiplicity decreases significantly as compared to the massless case. Finally, we discuss on the transverse momentum distribution of light quark initiated jets and emphasize on the comparison between our predictions and CDF data.
We review various aspects of jet physics in the context of hadron colliders. We start by discussing the definitions and properties of jets and recent development in this area. We then consider the question of factorization for processes with jets, in particular for cases in which jets are produced in special configurations, like for example in the region of forward rapidities. We review numerous perturbative methods for calculating predictions for jet processes, including the fixed-order calculations as well as various matching and merging techniques. We also discuss the questions related to n…
Hadronic decays of boosted resonances, e.g., top quark jets, at hadronic super colliders are frequent predictions in TeV-scale extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In such scenarios, accurate modeling of QCD radiation is necessary for trustworthy predictions. We present the automation of fully differential, next-to-leading-order (NLO) in QCD corrections with parton shower (PS) matching for an effective Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) that features $W_R^\pm, Z_R$ gauge bosons and heavy Majorana neutrinos $N$. Publicly available universal model files require remarkably fewer u…
We present results on dijet and W+dijet production at hadron colliders obtained by supplementing the leading log BFKL resummation with energy and momentum conservation. For pure dijet production, the inclusion of the BFKL radiation in the energy conservation leads to a decrease in the parton flux sufficient to counter-act the expected exponential increase in the cross section obtained for the partonic cross section. Other BFKL signatures such as the dijet azimuthal angle decorrelation do still survive.
It was shown that at typical energies and luminosities of an $e^+e^-$ linear collider one can observe a significant suppression of fluctuations of the number of gluons in small angular regions. This property of jets is expected in $e^+e^-$ annihilation as well as in any collision producing high energy quarks which give rise to the QCD gluon cascade. The reduction of multiplicity fluctuations was obtained from perturbative QCD using bunching parameters and then cross checked with a Monte Carlo simulation. The parton-level Monte Carlo simulation confirms the prediction, while the hadron level il…
A next-to-leading order QCD calculation for single-inclusive jet photoproduction in unpolarized and longitudinally polarized lepton-hadron collisions is presented which consistently includes ``direct'' and ``resolved'' photon contributions. The computation is performed within the ``small-cone approximation'' in a largely analytical form. Phenomenological aspects of jet production at future ep colliders such as the CERN-LHeC and the polarized BNL-eRHIC are discussed, placing particular emphasis on the perturbative stability of the predictions and the possibility to constrain the parton content …
Jet substructure variables for hadronic jets with transverse momenta in the range from 2.5 TeV to 20 TeV were studied using several designs for the spatial size of calorimeter cells. The studies used the full Geant4 simulation of calorimeter response combined with realistic reconstruction of calorimeter clusters. In most cases, the results indicate that the performance of jet-substructure reconstruction improves with reducing cell size of a hadronic calorimeter from $Δη\times Δϕ= 0.087\times0.087$, which are similar to the cell sizes of the calorimeters of LHC experiments, by a factor of four,…
The azimuthal angular decorrelation that is relevant to small-x QCD physics is studied in this paper to show the BFKL effect with a recent event generator. Events are generated at \sqrt{s} = 100 TeV with proton-proton collisions and jets, that are reconstructed by the Anti-k_{T} algorithm (R=0.7), with p_{T}>35GeV and in the rapidity range of |y|<6 are selected for the study. The azimuthal-angle difference between Mueller-Navelet Jets (Δ\text{Φ} ) in the rapidity seperation (Δy) up to 12 is analysed. The distributions of <cosn(π-ΔΦ)> for n=1,2,3 and their ratio are also presented as a function…
We study the planar-flow distributions of narrow, highly boosted, massive QCD jets. Using the factorization properties of QCD in the collinear limit, we compute the planar-flow jet function from the one-to-three splitting function at tree-level. We derive the leading-log behavior of the jet function analytically. We also compare our semi-analytic jet function with parton-shower predictions using various generators.
In this talk we give a short review of forward jets and forward $W$-boson production at hadron colliders, in view of the extraction of footprints of BFKL physics. We argue that at Tevatron energies, dijet production at large rapidity intervals is still subasymptotic with respect to the BFKL regime, thus the cross section is strongly dependent on the various cuts applied in the experimental setup. In addition, the choice of equal transverse momentum cuts on the tagging jets makes the cross section dependent on large logarithms of non-BFKL origin, and thus may spoil the BFKL analysis. For vector…
The cross section for the production of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in association with a high-pT hadronic jet, calculated in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), is presented. The expectations for the hadronic cross section at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed using reasonable kinematical cuts. In particular the contributions from superpartner loops to the cross section and their dependence on the parameters of the MSSM are investigated and found to be significant. Comparisons show that the production rate for h0 + jet in the MSSM can differ widely fro…
We investigate diffractive events in hadron-hadron collisions, in which two jets are produced and separated by a large rapidity gap. In perturbative QCD, the hard color-singlet object exchanged in the t-channel, and responsible for the rapidity gap, is the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) Pomeron. We perform a phenomenological study including the corrections due to next-to-leading logarithms (NLL). Using a renormalisation-group improved NLL kernel, we show that the BFKL predictions are in good agreement with the Tevatron data, and present predictions which could be tested at the LHC.
We critically examine the definition of dijet cross sections at large rapidity intervals in hadron-hadron collisions, taking proper account of the various cuts applied in a realistic experimental setup. We argue that the dependence of the cross section on the precise definition of the parton momentum fractions and the presence of an upper bound on the momentum transfer cannot be neglected, and we provide the relevant modifications to the analytical formulae by Mueller and Navelet. We also point out that the choice of equal transverse momentum cuts on the tagging jets can spoil the possibility …
We discuss non-perturbative QCD corrections to jet distributions in hadron collisions, focussing on hadronisation and underlying event contributions. Using soft gluon resummation and Monte-Carlo modelling we show that hadronisation dominates at small values of the jet radius R, behaving as 1/R, while underlying event corrections grow with the jet area. This provides a handle to disentangle them and parametrize them in terms of measurable QCD parameters, which might enjoy a degree of universality.
Strategies are presented for discovering light, color-singlet technipions (pi_T) produced in association with a vector boson through s-channel technirho production, at the Tevatron and LHC. Signal and W+jets background were simulated including detector effects. Tagging of b-quarks from the pi_T -> bb decay is found to be important to reduce the W+jets background. Kinematic properties of signal and background events are significantly different and simple cuts can be used to further improve the signal to background ratio.
In this talk we present a calculation of Higgs production via gluon fusion in association with two jets, including the full top-quark mass dependence, and compare it to the large top-mass limit. We find that the large top-mass limit is a good approximation as long as the Higgs mass is smaller than the top quark pair mass, and the jet transverse energies are smaller than the top mass. In addition, we compare Higgs production via gluon fusion and via weak-boson fusion, and consider final-state distributions, like the rapidity interval between the jets and the jet-jet azimuthal decorrelation, whi…
We present total and differential cross sections for the production of a hard photon with up to two b jets at both the Tevatron with center-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV and the Large Hadron Collider with center-of-mass energy 8 TeV, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections and full b-quark mass effects. We study the theoretical uncertainty due to the residual renormalization- and factorization-scale dependence and explain its origin on the basis of the different subprocesses contributing to the NLO cross section. We specifically address the case of the production of a hard photon with …
Inspired by the success of analytical models for non-perturbative effects, used to investigate event shape variables at LEP and HERA, we apply them to a study of jets at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron and the LHC. We find that simple analytical estimates are able to shed considerable light on issues that could previously be tackled only through Monte-Carlo simulations, for example the role of different non-perturbative effects in various jet algorithms. In this context, we also provide testable numerical results for the commonly studied inclusive-jet $p_t$ distribution, and we introduce…

A spectrum of massive graviton states is present in several recent theoretical models that include extra space dimensions. In some such models the graviton states are well separated in mass, and can be detected as resonances in collider experiments. The ability of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider to identify such states and measure their properties is considered, in the case that the resonances are narrow compared to the experimental resolution. The discovery limits for the detection of the decay mode G->e+e- are derived. The angular distribution of the lepton pair is used to de…
We present the cross section for production of a Z boson in association with four jets at the Large Hadron Collider, at next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling. When the Z decays to neutrinos, this process is a key irreducible background to many searches for new physics. Its computation has been made feasible through the development of the on-shell approach to perturbative quantum field theory. We present the total cross section for pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, after folding in the decay of the Z boson, or virtual photon, to a charged-lepton pair. We also provide distributions of the tr…
Jet emission at hadron colliders follows simple scaling patterns. Based on perturbative QCD we derive Poisson and staircase scaling for final state as well as initial state radiation. Parton density effects enhance staircase scaling at low multiplicities. We propose experimental tests of our theoretical findings in Z+jets and QCD gap jets production based on minor additions to current LHC analyses.
We explore the feasibility of the measurement of charm-jet cross sections in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering at the future Electron-Ion Collider. This channel provides clean sensitivity to the strangeness content of the nucleon in the high-$x$ region. We estimate charm-jet tagging performance with parametrized detector simulations. We show the expected sensitivity to various scenarios for strange parton distribution functions. We argue that this measurement will be key to future QCD global analyses, so it should inform EIC detector designs and luminosity requirements.
We discuss non-perturbative QCD contributions to jet observables, computing their dependence on the jet radius R, and on the colour and transverse momentum of the parton initiating the jet. We show, using analytic QCD models of power corrections as well as Monte Carlo simulations, that hadronisation corrections grow at small values of R, behaving as 1/R, while underlying event contributions grow with the jet area as R^2. We highlight the connection between hadronisation corrections to jets and those for event shapes in e^+e^- and DIS; we note the limited dependence of our results on the choice…
We present a classification of energy flow variables for highly collimated jets. Observables are constructed by taking moments of the energy flow and forming scalars of a suitable Lorentz subgroup. The jet shapes are naturally arranged in an expansion in both angular and energy resolution, allowing us to derive the natural observables for describing an N-particle jet. We classify the leading variables that characterize jets with up to 4 particles. We rediscover the familiar jet mass, angularities, and planar flow, which dominate the lowest order substructure variables. We also discover several…
We study the prospect of determining the decay properties of the gluino in the supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model at a 100 TeV future hadron collider. We consider the case where the neutral Wino is the lightest superparticle. In this case, the long-lived charged Wino can be used to eliminate standard model backgrounds, which enables us to study the details of superparticles. We show that, based on the analysis of the numbers of high $p_T$ leptons, boosted $W$-jets, and $b$-tagged jets, we may determine the gaugino species and the quark flavors in the gluino decay. With such determinations, w…
We describe the impact of the full one-loop electroweak terms of O(alpha_s alpha_EM^3) entering the electron-positron into three-jet cross-section from sqrt(s)=M_Z to TeV scale energies. We include both factorisable and non-factorisable virtual corrections and photon bremsstrahlung. Their importance for the measurement of alpha_S from jet rates and shape variables is explained qualitatively and illustrated quantitatively, also in presence of b-tagging.
Many models of Beyond the Standard Model physics contain particles that are charged under both Standard Model and Hidden Valley gauge groups, yet very little effort has been put into establishing their experimental signatures. We provide a general overview of the collider phenomenology of spin 0 or 1/2 mediators with non-trivial gauge numbers under both the Standard Model and a single new confining group. Due to the possibility of many unconventional signatures, the focus is on direct production with semivisible jets. For the mediators to be able to decay, a global $U(1)$ symmetry must be brok…
The degenerate stop NLSP and neutralino LSP scenario is well motivated but hard to detect at the collider experiments. We propose a novel signature for detection this scenario at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and demonstrate its feasibility.
We study double parton scattering (DPS) processes involving electroweak gauge bosons at the 13 TeV and 100 TeV proton-proton colliders. Specifically, we focus on three DPS channels: $W$-boson plus two jets ($W\otimes jj$), $Z$-boson plus two jets ($Z\otimes jj$), and same-sign $W$ pair production ($W^\pm\otimes W^\pm$). We demonstrate that the $Z\otimes jj$ process, which has not been paid too much attentions, is the best channel for measuring effective cross section $σ_{\rm eff}$. The accuracy of $σ_{\rm eff}$ measurement in the three DPS channels, especially the $W^\pm\otimes W^\pm$ producti…
We investigate the production of three Higgs bosons at a proton-proton collider running at a centre-of-mass energy of 100 TeV, all of which decay into $b$-jets. This final state encapsulates by far the largest fraction of the total cross section of triple Higgs boson production, approximately $20\%$. We examine, by constructing detailed phenomenological analyses, two scenarios: (i) one in which the triple and quartic Higgs boson self-couplings are modified independently by new phenomena with respect to their Standard Model (SM) values and (ii) an extension of the SM by a gauge-singlet scalar t…
We present next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD predictions to $W^+W^-$ production in association with up to three jets at hadron colliders. We include contributions from couplings of the $W$ bosons to light quarks as well as trilinear vector couplings. These processes are used in vector-boson coupling measurements, are background to Higgs signals and are needed to constrain many new physics scenarios. For the first time NLO QCD predictions are shown for electroweak di-vector boson production with three jets at a hadron collider. We show total and differential cross sections for the LHC with proton…
