We investigate the production of three Higgs bosons at a proton-proton collider running at a centre-of-mass energy of 100 TeV, all of which decay into $b$-jets. This final state encapsulates by far the largest fraction of the total cross section of triple Higgs boson production, approximately $20\%$. We examine, by constructing detailed phenomenological analyses, two scenarios: (i) one in which the triple and quartic Higgs boson self-couplings are modified independently by new phenomena with respect to their Standard Model (SM) values and (ii) an extension of the SM by a gauge-singlet scalar that could drive first-order electroweak phase transition, within the context of the so-called xSM. In the former, we find that competitive constraints of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ can be placed on the quartic coupling and in the latter we demonstrate that it will be possible to obtain important information on the structure of the extended scalar sector.
We perform a BFKL-NLL analysis of forward jet production at HERA which leads to a good description of data over the full kinematical domain. We also predict the azimuthal angle dependence of Mueller-Navelet jet production at the Tevatron and the LHC using the BFKL NLL formalism.
The merging procedure of tree-level matrix elements and the subsequent parton shower as implemented in the new event generator SHERPA will be validated for the example of W/Z+jets production at the Tevatron. Comparisons with results obtained from other approaches and programs and with experimental results clearly show that the merging procedure yields relevant and correct results at both the hadron and parton levels.
We study the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at 13 TeV LHC, within collinear factorization and including the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms in the next-to-leading approximation. We calculate several azimuthal correlations for different values of the rapidity separation $Y$ between the two jets and evaluate the effect of excluding those events where, for a given $Y$, one of the two jets is produced in the central region.
We analyse CP-violating effects in Z -> 4 jet decays, assuming the presence of a CP-violating effective triple gluon coupling. We discuss the influence of this coupling on the decay width. Furthermore, we analyse different CP-odd observables and propose strategies of a direct search for such a CP-violating GGG coupling. The present data of LEP 1 should give significant information on the coupling.
We study the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at hadron colliders in the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) framework. We show that a measurement of the relative azimuthal angle ΔΦbetween the jets can provide a good testing ground for corrections due to next-leading logarithms (NLL). Besides the well-known azimuthal decorrelation with increasing rapidity interval Δηbetween the jets, we propose to also measure this effect as a function of R=k_2/k_1, the ratio between the jets transverse momenta. Using renormalisation-group improved NLL kernel, we obtain predictions for dσ/dΔηdR dΔΦ. We anal…
Triple gauge boson vertex, which is inherent to the model of a dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry, leads to an effective four-fermion interaction of quarks. Calculation of the effective coupling constant in the framework of the model results in agreement with recent information on enhancement of inclusive high E_T jet cross section at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. Thus this effect may be connected with triple gauge boson vertex with coupling constant λ\approx 0.7, which will clearly manifest itself at the soon forthcoming LEP II.
The jet structure in events with Drell-Yan-produced W bosons is discussed, and a new model for describing such event is presented. The model is shown to explain recent measurements of the W-jet rapidity correlation and predicts a transverse energy flow at high W rapidities (corresponding to probing small-x partons in one of the incoming protons) higher than conventional parton cascade event generators.
We discuss hard rescattering effects that can be measured using CP-even, T$_{\rm N}$-odd triple-product observables in polarized $Z$ decays to three jets. We show that the standard model contributions, from both QCD and electroweak rescattering, are very small. Thus these measurements are potentially sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. We investigate one such contribution which involves a new gauge boson coupling to baryon number.
Inclusive jet production will dominate the high $Q^{2}$ final states at the LHC.~In this work we try to estimate the up-to-date expectations, for high $E_{T}$ jets and their expected origin from the various parton-parton scattering processes. For these studies we have used a standard Parton Distribution Function (PDF) and simulated millions of events with the PYTHIA8 event genertor. The results are compared with simulations for center-of-mass energies of 0.9 TeV, 2.36 TeV, 7 TeV and 14 TeV corresponding to existing and future LHC runs. We present some expectations for the relative cross sectio…
The sensitivity of Standard Model Higgs boson searches at the Tevatron experiments with a mass 135<MH<190 GeV using the channel H->WW->ll+MET (l=e,mu) is discussed. Three new event selections involving Higgs in association with one or two high PT hadronic jets are discussed. Using Leading Order Matrix Elements and a conservative cut-based analysis a 95% confidence level exclusion on sigmaxBR(H->WW), 1.6 times larger than that predicted by the Standard Model for MH=165 GeV, may be achieved with 5fb-1 of integrated luminosity. By combining these three event selections with the existing analysis,…
We investigate the potential of future TeV linear e^+e^- colliders to observe singly-charged Higgs bosons ($H^\pm$) via the coupling $H^\pm W^\mp Z$, which would signal the existence of exotic Higgs representations. In the context of a Higgs-triplet model compatible with the electroweak oblique parameters, we estimate the cross section for pro- ducing charged Higgs-triplet bosons that couple predominantly to $W$ and $Z$ bosons in 0.5--2 TeV-$e^+e^-$ colliders. The principal backgrounds are evaluated and the viability of the signal is discussed and illustrated.
We study the process p bar{p} --> gamma gamma gamma as a signal for associated photon-technipion production at the Tevatron. This is a clean signature with relatively low background. Resonant and non-resonant contributions are included and we show that technicolor models can be effectively probed in this mode.
We consider triple Higgs boson production at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. We perform a survey of viable final states and compare and contrast triple production to Higgs boson pair production. Focussing on the $hhh \rightarrow (b\bar{b}) (b\bar{b}) (γγ)$ final state, we construct a baseline analysis for the Standard Model scenario and simple deformations, demonstrating that the process merits investigation in the high-luminosity phase of the future collider as a new probe of the self-coupling sector of the Higgs boson.
We present a new scheme for tagging high-$p_{T}$ bottom and charm jets using energetic muons. Contemporary track-based $b$ tags lose their ability to reject light jet background as jet $p_{T}\rightarrow\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{TeV})$, where the massive boost exposes fundamental limits in tracking resolution. For our "$μ_{x}$" tag, the signal efficiency and light jet rejection is robust versus $p_{T}$. In the tested regime (jet $p_{T}\in[\mathrm{0.5,2.1}]$ TeV), $μ_{x}$ tags $\sim14\%$ of $b$ jets, $\sim6.5\%$ of $c$ jets and $\sim0.65\%$ of light jets. Since $μ_{x}$ tagging should be immediately us…
Two Higgs doublet extensions of the standard model, such as supersymmetry, predict the existence of charged Higgs bosons. We explore the reach for TeV-scale charged Higgs bosons through their associated production with top quarks, and their decay to boosted top jets and $μ_x$ tagged boosted bottom jets, at a 14 TeV CERN Large Hadron Collider and at a 100 TeV Future Circular Collider. In particular, we show the moderate $\tanβ$ "wedge" region of parameter space cannot be probed at the Large Hadron Collider for TeV-scale $H^\pm$ because the cross section is too small. However, a 100 TeV future p…
The ALICE collaboration recently reported high-statistics $\bf p_t$ spectra from 5 TeV and 13 TeV p-p collisions with intent to determine the role of jets in high-multiplicity collisions. In the present study a two-component (soft + hard) model (TCM) of hadron production in p-p collisions is applied to ALICE $\bf p_t$ spectra. As in previous TCM studies of A-B collision systems jet and nonjet contributions to $\bf p_t$ spectra are accurately separated over the entire $\bf p_t$ acceptance. The statistical significance of data-model differences is established leading to insights concerning selec…
Recent advances in superconductor properties and superconducting magnet technology have made it possible to build cost-effective, high-performance dipoles with a field of 12 Tesla - 3 times the field strength of the Tevatron. Such magnets could be used to upgrade Fermilab's collider in its existing tunnel to a collision energy $\sqrt s$= 6 TeV and luminosity {$\cal L$}$>$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. We have calculated the parton luminosities for quark-antiquark and gluon-gluon scattering for the Tevatron, the Tripler, and LHC. In most models of the Higgs field and supersymmetry, the Tripler w…
The LHC search for nearly degenerate gluinos and neutralinos, which can occur, for example, in SUSY axion models, is limited by the reduced missing transverse momentum and effective mass in the events. We propose the use of kinematic correlations between jets coming from initial state radiation (ISR) in gluino pair production events at the 13 TeV LHC. A significant improvement in the signal to background ratio is obtained for the highly compressed gluino-neutralino search, by using cuts on the rapidity and azimuthal angle separation between the pair of tagged jets with the highest transverse m…
Jet substructure variables for hadronic jets with transverse momenta in the range from 2.5 TeV to 20 TeV were studied using several designs for the spatial size of calorimeter cells. The studies used the full Geant4 simulation of calorimeter response combined with realistic reconstruction of calorimeter clusters. In most cases, the results indicate that the performance of jet-substructure reconstruction improves with reducing cell size of a hadronic calorimeter from $Δη\times Δϕ= 0.087\times0.087$, which are similar to the cell sizes of the calorimeters of LHC experiments, by a factor of four,…
The type-III see-saw model holding out a riveting rationale for the minuscule neutrino masses caters for a well-to-do phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Several searches targetting the triplet fermions have been performed at the LHC. Not only are the signals for the leptonic final states considered in these searches suppressed by the branching fractions of the Standard Model (SM) bosons, but they are also beset with considerably large SM backgrounds. Thus, these searches are deemed not to be sensitive enough in probing the triplet fermions much heavier than 1 TeV. To this end, w…
More than 25 years ago, Mueller Navelet jets were proposed as a decisive test of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. We here study this process at NLL BFKL accuracy, taking into account NLL corrections to the Green's function and to the jet vertices. We present detailed predictions for various observables that can be measured at LHC in ongoing experiments like ATLAS or CMS at sqrt{s}=7 TeV: the cross-section, the azimuthal correlations and the angular distribution of these jets. For this purpose, we apply realistic kinematical cuts and binning, and study the dependence of our results with respe…
We propose a realization of mass varying neutrino dark energy in two extensions of the Standard Model (SM) with a dynamical neutrino mass related to the acceleron field while satisfying the naturalness. In the first scenario the SM is extended to include a TeV scale scalar Higgs triplet ($ξ$) and a TeV scale second Higgs doublet ($η$), while in the second scenario an extension of the SM with fermion triplet $(Σ)$ is considered. We also point out the possible leptogenesis mechanisms for simultaneously generating the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe in both the scenarios and discuss the…
Signatures with an electroweak vector boson and many jets play a crucial role at the Large Hadron Collider, both in the measurement of Standard-Model parameters and in searches for new physics. Precise predictions for these multi-scale processes are therefore indispensable. We present next-to-leading order QCD predictions for $W^\pm/Z$+jets at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, including up to five/four jets in the final state. All production channels are included and leptonic decays of the vector bosons are considered at the amplitude level. We assess theoretical uncertainties arising from renormalization- a…
We discuss the possibility that microquasar jets may be powerful emitters of TeV neutrinos. We estimate the neutrino fluxes produced by photopion production in the jets of a sample of identified microquasars and microquasar candidates, for which available data enables rough determination of the jet parameters. We demonstrate that in several of the sources considered, the neutrino flux at Earth, produced in events similar to those observed, can exceed the detection threshold of a km^2 neutrino detector. Sources with bulk Lorentz factors larger than those characteristic of the sample considered …
An interpretation of the ridge phenomenon found in pp collisions at 7 TeV is given in terms of enhancement of soft partons due to energy loss of semihard jets. A description of ridge formation in nuclear collisions can directly be extended to pp collisions, since hydrodynamics is not used, and azimuthal anisotropy is generated by semihard scattering. Both the p_T and multiplicity dependencies are well reproduced. Some suggestions are made about other observables.
Cross section predictions of W and Z bosons in association with jets (up to 6 jets, $W\to\ell^{\pm}ν$ and $Z\to\ell^{\pm}$ where $\ell^{\pm}$=$e^{\pm}$ or $μ^{\pm}$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=14 TeV is performed using Alpgen MC generator with CTEQ6L1 leading order parton distribution function. In addition, W and Z boson cross sections are obtained up to next to next to leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections using MCFM MC generator. To validate the predictions, a detailed comparison of NNLO QCD calculations with 8 TeV CMS results for total cross section is performed and a fiducial…
We study high-energy neutrino production in collimated jets inside progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae, considering both collimation and internal shocks. We obtain simple, useful constraints, using the often overlooked point that shock acceleration of particles is ineffective at radiation-mediated shocks. Classical GRBs may be too powerful to produce high-energy neutrinos inside stars, which is consistent with IceCube nondetections. We find that ultralong GRBs avoid such constraints and detecting the TeV signal will support giant progenitors. Predictions for low-power GRB cla…
