In the abelian sandpile model, recurrent chip configurations are of interest as they are a natural choice of coset representatives under the quotient of the reduced Laplacian. We investigate graphs whose recurrent identities with respect to different sinks are compatible with each other. The maximal stable configuration is the simplest recurrent chip configuration, and graphs whose recurrent identities equal the maximal stable configuration are of particular interest, and are said to have the complete maximal identity property. We prove that given any graph $G$ one can attach trees to the vertices of $G$ to yield a graph with the complete maximal identity property. We conclude with several intriguing conjectures about the complete maximal identity property of various graph products.
We classify all recurrent configurations of the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on Ferrers graphs. The classification is in terms of decorations of EW-tableaux, which undecorated are in bijection with the minimal recurrent configurations. We introduce decorated permutations, extending to decorated EW-tableaux a bijection between such tableaux and permutations, giving a direct bijection between the decorated permutations and all recurrent configurations of the ASM. We also describe a bijection between the decorated permutations and the intransitive trees of Postnikov, the breadth-first search of w…
The article considers the procedure of connection of graphs to the edges of a cyclic graph and its influence on the sandpile group of the graph thus obtained. A series of classes of graphs CH_n(a_1,...,a_n) is defined. Recurrent and non-recurrent formulas for calculating the sandpile groups of all graphs of classes CH_n (a_1, ..., a_n) are proposed.
We classify recurrent states of the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on the complete split graph. There are two distinct cases to be considered that depend upon the location of the sink vertex in the complete split graph. This characterisation of decreasing recurrent states is in terms of Motzkin words and can also be characterised in terms of combinatorial necklaces. We also give a characterisation of the recurrent states in terms of a new type of parking function that we call a tiered parking function. These parking functions are characterised by assigning a tier (or colour) to each of the cars,…
We answer a question of Laszlo Babai concerning the abelian sandpile model. Given a graph, the model yields a finite abelian group of recurrent configurations which is closely related to the combinatorial Laplacian of the graph. We explicitly describe the group elements and operations in the case of thick trees with loops--that is, graphs which are obtained from trees by setting arbitrary edge multiplicities and adding loops at vertices. We do this both concretely (by describing the so-called recurrent and identity configurations) and abstractly (by computing the group's abstract structure), a…
A permutation graph is a graph whose edges are given by inversions of a permutation. We study the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on such graphs. We exhibit a bijection between recurrent configurations of the ASM on permutation graphs and the tiered trees introduced by Dugan et al. [10]. This bijection allows certain parameters of the recurrent configurations to be read on the corresponding tree. In particular, we show that the level of a recurrent configuration can be interpreted as the external activity of the corresponding tree, so that the bijection exhibited provides a new proof of a famous …
We classify recurrent configurations of the sandpile model on the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n} in which one designated vertex is a sink. We present a bijection from these recurrent configurations to decorated parallelogram polyominoes whose bounding box is a m*n rectangle. Several special types of recurrent configurations and their properties via this bijection are examined. For example, recurrent configurations whose sum of heights is minimal are shown to correspond to polyominoes of least area. Two other classes of recurrent configurations are shown to be related to bicomposition matrice…
It is well known that recurrent sandpile configurations can be characterized as the optimal solution of certain optimization problems. In this article, we present two new integer linear programming models, one that computes recurrent configurations and other that computes the order of the configuration. Finally, by using duality of linear programming, we are able to compute the identity configuration for the cone of a regular graph.
We study combinatorial aspects of the sandpile model on wheel and fan graphs, seeking bijective characterisations of the model's recurrent configurations on these families. For wheel graphs, we exhibit a bijection between these recurrent configurations and the set of subgraphs of the cycle graph which maps the level of the configuration to the number of edges of the subgraph. This bijection relies on two key ingredients. The first consists in considering a stochastic variant of the standard Abelian sandpile model (ASM), rather than the ASM itself. The second ingredient is a mapping from a give…
We introduce two operators on stable configurations of the sandpile model that provide an algorithmic bijection between recurrent and parking configurations. This bijection preserves their equivalence classes with respect to the sandpile group. The study of these operators in the special case of the complete bipartite graph ${K}_{m,n}$ naturally leads to a generalization of the well known Cyclic Lemma of Dvoretsky and Motzkin, via pairs of periodic bi-infinite paths in the plane having slightly different slopes. We achieve our results by interpreting the action of these operators as an action …
A EW-tableau is a certain 0/1-filling of a Ferrers diagram, corresponding uniquely to an acyclic orientation, with a unique sink, of a certain bipartite graph called a Ferrers graph. We give a bijective proof of a result of Ehrenborg and van Willigenburg showing that EW-tableaux of a given shape are equinumerous with permutations with a given set of excedances. This leads to an explicit bijection between EW-tableaux and the much studied Le-tableaux, as well as the tree-like tableaux introduced by Aval, Boussicault and Nadeau. We show that the set of EW-tableaux on a given Ferrers diagram are i…
We prove several results concerning a polynomial that arises from the sandpile model on directed graphs; these results are previously only known for undirected graphs. Implicit in the sandpile model is the choice of a sink vertex, and it is conjectured by Perrot and Pham that the polynomial $c_0+c_1y+\ldots c_n y^n$, where $c_i$ is the number of recurrent classes of the sandpile model with level $i$, is independent of the choice of the sink. We prove their conjecture by expressing the polynomial as an invariant of the sinkless sandpile model. We then present a bijection between arborescences o…
We introduce a new model of a stochastic sandpile on a graph $G$ containing a sink. When unstable, a site sends one grain to each of its neighbours independently with probability $p \in (0,1]$. For $p=1$, this coincides with the standard Abelian sandpile model. In general, for $p\in(0,1)$, the set of recurrent configurations of this sandpile model is different from that of the Abelian sandpile model. We give a characterisation of this set in terms of orientations of the graph $G$. We also define the lacking polynomial $L_G$ as the generating function counting this set according to the number o…
The height probabilities for the recurrent configurations in the Abelian Sandpile Model on the square lattice have analytic expressions, in terms of multidimensional quadratures. At first, these quantities have been evaluated numerically with high accuracy, and conjectured to be certain cubic rational-coefficient polynomials in 1/pi. Later their values have been determined by different methods. We revert to the direct derivation of these probabilities, by computing analytically the corresponding integrals. Yet another time, we confirm the predictions on the probabilities, and thus, as a coroll…
The Abelian Sandpile Model is a discrete diffusion process defined on graphs (Dhar [10], Dhar et al. [11]) which serves as the standard model of self-organized criticality. The transience class of a sandpile is defined as the maximum number of particles that can be added without making the system recurrent ([3]). Using elementary combinatorial arguments and symmetry properties, Babai and Gorodezky (SODA 2007,[2]) demonstrated a bound of O(n^30) on the transience class of an nxn grid. This was later improved by Choure and Vishwanathan (SODA 2012,[7]) to O(n^7) using techniques based on harmonic…
Sums of the form $\sum_{N_m=q}^{n}{\cdots \sum_{N_1=q}^{N_2}{a_{(m);N_m}\cdots a_{(1);N_1}}}$ where the $a_{(k);N_k}$'s are same or distinct sequences appear quite often in mathematics. We will refer to them as recurrent sums. In this paper, we introduce a variety of formulas to help manipulate and work with this type of sums. We begin by developing variation formulas that allow the variation of a recurrent sum of order $m$ to be expressed in terms of lower order recurrent sums. We then proceed to derive theorems (which we will call inversion formulas) which show how to interchange the order o…
Hereditary chip-firing models generalize the Abelian sandpile model and the cluster firing model to an exponential family of games induced by covers of the vertex set. This generalization retains some desirable properties, e.g. stabilization is independent of firings chosen and each chip-firing equivalence class contains a unique recurrent configuration. In this paper we present an explicit bijection between the recurrent configurations of a hereditary chip-firing model on a graph and its spanning trees.
Two classes of avalanche-finite matrices and their critical groups (integer cokernels) are studied from the viewpoint of chip-firing/sandpile dynamics, namely, the Cartan matrices of finite root systems and the McKay-Cartan matrices for finite subgroups G of general linear groups. In the root system case, the recurrent and superstable configurations are identified explicitly and are related to minuscule dominant weights. In the McKay-Cartan case for finite subgroups of the special linear group, the cokernel is related to the abelianization of the subgroup G. In the special case of the classica…
