Multi-view clustering methods have been a focus in recent years because of their superiority in clustering performance. However, typical traditional multi-view clustering algorithms still have shortcomings in some aspects, such as removal of redundant information, utilization of various views and fusion of multi-view features. In view of these problems, this paper proposes a new multi-view clustering method, low-rank subspace multi-view clustering based on adaptive graph regularization. We construct two new data matrix decomposition models into a unified optimization model. In this framework, we address the significance of the common knowledge shared by the cross view and the unique knowledge of each view by presenting new low-rank and sparse constraints on the sparse subspace matrix. To ensure that we achieve effective sparse representation and clustering performance on the original data matrix, adaptive graph regularization and unsupervised clustering constraints are also incorporated in the proposed model to preserve the internal structural features of the data. Finally, the proposed method is compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms. Experimental results for five widely used multi-view benchmarks show that our proposed algorithm surpasses other state-of-the-art methods by a clear margin.
We consider the unsupervised learning problem of assigning labels to unlabeled data. A naive approach is to use clustering methods, but this works well only when data is properly clustered and each cluster corresponds to an underlying class. In this paper, we first show that this unsupervised labeling problem in balanced binary cases can be solved if two unlabeled datasets having different class balances are available. More specifically, estimation of the sign of the difference between probability densities of two unlabeled datasets gives the solution. We then introduce a new method to directl…

We propose the clustered generator model for clustering which contains both continuous and discrete latent variables. Discrete latent variables model the cluster label while the continuous ones model variations within each cluster. The learning of the model proceeds in a unified probabilistic framework and incorporates the unsupervised clustering as an inner step without the need for an extra inference model as in existing variational…
Determining the quality of the results obtained by clustering techniques is a key issue in unsupervised machine learning. Many authors have discussed the desirable features of good clustering algorithms. However, Jon Kleinberg established an impossibility theorem for clustering. As a consequence, a wealth of studies have proposed techniques to evaluate the quality of clustering results depending on the characteristics of the clustering problem and the algorithmic technique employed to cluster data.

Then, an unanimous voting strategy is used to generate a local clustering partition (LCP). The novel MIRBM model is a core feature encoding part of the proposed u…

We are interested in clustering parts of a given single multi-variate series in an unsupervised manner. We would like to segment and cluster the series such that the resulting blocks present in each cluster are coherent with respect to a known model (e.g. physics model). Data points are said to be coherent if they can be described using this model with the same parameters. We have designed an algorithm based on dynamic programming with constraints on the number of clusters, the number of transitions as well as the minimal size of a block such that the clusters are coherent with this process. The goal of unsupervised representation learning is to extract a new representation of data, such that solving many different tasks becomes easier. Existing methods typically focus on vectorized data and offer little support for relational data, which additionally describe relationships among instances. In this work we introduce an approach for relational unsupervised representation learning. Viewing a relational dataset as a hypergraph, new features are obtained by clustering vertices and hyperedges. To find a representation suited for many relational learning tasks, a wide range of similarit…

Unsupervised clustering is one of the most fundamental challenges in machine learning. A popular hypothesis is that data are generated from a union of low-dimensional nonlinear manifolds; thus an approach to clustering is identifying and separating these manifolds. In this paper, we present a novel approach to solve this problem by using a mixture of autoencoders. Our model consists of two parts: 1) a collection of autoencoders where each autoencoder learns the underlying manifold of a group of similar objects, and 2) a mixture assignment neural network, which takes the concatenated latent vec…

This paper proposes a variant of the method of Guédon and Verhynin for estimating the cluster matrix in the Mixture of Gaussians framework via Semi-Definite Programming. A clustering oriented embedding is deduced from this estimate. The procedure is suitable for very high dimensional data because it is based on pairwise distances only. Theoretical garantees are provided and an eigenvalue optimisation approach is proposed for computing the embedding. The performance of the method is illustrated via Monte Carlo experiements and comparisons with other embeddings from the literature.
Discrete random variables are natural components of probabilistic clustering models. A number of VAE variants with discrete latent variables have been developed. Training such methods requires marginalizing over the discrete latent variables, causing training time complexity to be linear in the number clusters. By applying a continuous relaxation to the discrete variables in these methods we can achieve a reduction in the training time complexity to be constant in the number of clusters used. We demonstrate that in practice for one such method, the Gaussian Mixture VAE, the use of a continuous…

Outcome regressed on class labels identified by unsupervised clustering is custom in many applications. However, it is common to ignore the misclassification of class labels caused by the learning algorithm, which potentially leads to serious bias of the estimated effect parameters. Due to its generality we suggest to redress the situation by use of the simulation and extrapolation method. Performance is illustrated by simulated data from Gaussian mixture models. Finally, we apply our method to a study which regressed overall survival on class labels derived from unsupervised clustering of gen…

The random functional data realizations could be measured with error at discrete, and possibly random, points in the definition domain. The idea is to build a set of binary trees by recursive splitting of the observations. The number of groups are determined in a data-driven way. The new algorithm provides easily interpretable results and fast predictions for online data sets. Results on simulated datasets reveal good performance in various complex settings. …
In spectral clustering and spectral image segmentation, the data is partioned starting from a given matrix of pairwise similarities S. the matrix S is constructed by hand, or learned on a separate training set. In this paper we show how to achieve spectral clustering in unsupervised mode. Our algorithm starts with a set of observed pairwise features, which are possible components of an unknown, parametric similarity function. This function is learned iteratively, at the same time as the clustering of the data. The algorithm shows promosing results on synthetic and real data.

We evaluate the performance of our algorithm on synthetic da…
We study a variant of the variational autoencoder model (VAE) with a Gaussian mixture as a prior distribution, with the goal of performing unsupervised clustering through deep generative models. We observe that the known problem of over-regularisation that has been shown to arise in regular VAEs also manifests itself in our model and leads to cluster degeneracy. We show that a heuristic called minimum information constraint that has been shown to mitigate this effect in VAEs can also be applied to improve unsupervised clustering performance with our model. Furthermore we analyse the effect of …

We propose to improve the discriminative ability of the target domain representation by simultaneously learning tightly clustered target representations while encouraging that each cluster is assigned to a unique and different class from the source. This strategy alleviates the effects of negative transfer when combined with adversarial domain matching between source and target representations. Our approach is rob…

We develop a novel method based on robust loss minimization that performs well in clustering such GMM with a uniform background. We give theoretical guarantees for our clustering algorithm to o…
Clustering is essential to many tasks in pattern recognition and computer vision. With the advent of deep learning, there is an increasing interest in learning deep unsupervised representations for clustering analysis. Many works on this domain rely on variants of auto-encoders and use the encoder outputs as representations/features for clustering. In this paper, we show that an l2 normalization constraint on these representations during auto-encoder training, makes the representations more separable and compact in the Euclidean space after training. This greatly improves the clustering accura…

We herein introduce a new method of interpretable clustering that uses unsupervised binary trees. It is a three-stage procedure, the first stage of which entails a series of recursive binary splits to reduce the heterogeneity of the data within the new subsamples. During the second stage (pruning), consideration is given to whether adjacent nodes can be aggregated. Finally, during the third stage (joining), similar clusters are joined together, even if they do not share the same parent originally. Consistency results are obtained, and the procedure is used on simulated and real data sets.
