An omitted value of a transcendental meromorphic function $f$ is called a Baker omitted value, in short \textit{bov} if there is a disk $D$ centered at the bov such that each component of the boundary of $f^{-1}(D)$ is bounded. Assuming that the bov is in the Fatou set of $f$, this article investigates the dynamics of the function. Firstly, the connectivity of all the Fatou components are determined. If $U$ is the Fatou component containing the bov then it is proved that a Fatou component $U'$ is infinitely connected if and only if it lands on $U$, i.e. $f^{k}(U') \subset U$ for some $k \geq 1$. Every other Fatou component is either simply connected or lands on a Herman ring. Further, assuming that the number of critical points in the Fatou set whose forward orbits do not intersect $U$ is finite, we have shown that the connectivity of each Fatou component belongs to a finite set. This set is independent of the Fatou components. It is proved that the Fatou component containing the bov is completely invariant whenever it is forward invariant. Further, if the invariant Fatou component is an attracting domain and compactly contains all the critical values of the function then the Julia set is totally disconnected. Baker domains are shown to be non-existent whenever the bov is in the Fatou set. It is also proved that, if there is a $2$-periodic Baker domain (these are not ruled out when the bov is in the Julia set), or a $2$-periodic attracting or parabolic domain containing the bov then the function has no Herman ring. Some examples exhibiting different possibilities for the Fatou set are discussed. This includes the first example of a meromorphic function with an omitted value which has two infinitely connected Fatou components.
We define Baker omitted value, in short bov, of an entire or meromorphic function f in the complex plane as an omitted value for which there exists r0 > 0 such that for each ball Dr(a) centered at a and with radius r satisfying 0 < r < r0, every component of the boundary of f only asymptotic value. An entire function has bov if and only if the image of every unbounded curve is unbounded. It follows that an entire function has bov whenever it has a Baker wandering domain. Functions with bov has at most one completely invariant Fatou component.
Baker proved that for transcendental entire functions there is at most one completely invariant component of the Fatou set. It was observed by Julien Duval that there is a missing case in Baker's proof. In this article we follow Baker's ideas and give some alternative arguments to establish the result.
We study the iteration of transcendental self-maps of $\mathbb{C}^*:=\mathbb{C}\setminus \{0\}$, that is, holomorphic functions $f:\mathbb{C}^*\to\mathbb{C}^*$ for which both zero and infinity are essential singularities. We use approximation theory to construct functions in this class with escaping Fatou components, both wandering domains and Baker domains, that accumulate to $\{0,\infty\}$ in any possible way under iteration. We also give the first explicit examples of transcendental self-maps of $\mathbb{C}^*$ with Baker domains and with wandering domains. In doing so, we developed a suffic…
Iteration of the function $f_λ(z)=λ+ z+\tan z, z \in \mathbb{C}$ is investigated in this article. It is proved that for every $λ$, the Fatou set of $f_λ$ has a completely invariant Baker domain $B$; we call it the primary Fatou component. The rest of the results deals with $f_λ$ when it is topologically hyperbolic. For all real $λ$ or $λ$ such that $ λ=πk +i λ_2$ for some integer $k$ and $0 < λ_2<1$, the only other Fatou component is shown to be another completely invariant Baker domain. It is proved that if $|2+λ^2|<1$, then the Fatou set is the union of $B$ and infinitely many invariant attr…
For a transcendental entire function, a partial affirmative answer to Baker's question on the boundedness of its Fatou components is given. In addition, we have addressed Wang's question on Fejér gaps. Certain results about functions with Fabry gaps and of infinite order have also been generalized.
We investigate the existence and distribution of Herman rings of transcendental meromorphic functions which have at least one omitted value. If all the poles of such a function are multiple then it has no Herman ring. Herman rings of period one or two do not exist. Functions with a single pole or with at least two poles one of which is an omitted value have no Herman ring. Every doubly connected periodic Fatou component is a Herman ring.
We prove several results concerning the relative position of points in the postsingular set $P(f)$ of a meromorphic map $f$ and the boundary of a Baker domain or the successive iterates of a wandering component. For Baker domains we answer a question of Mihaljević-Brandt and Rempe-Gillen. For wandering domains we show that if the iterates $U_n$ of such a domain have uniformly bounded diameter, then there exists a sequence of postsingular values $p_n$ such that ${\rm dist}(p_n,\partial U_n)\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. We also prove that if $U_n \cap P(f)=\emptyset$ and the postsingular set of $f$ l…
The dynamics of transcendental functions in the complex plane has received a significant amount of attention. In particular much is known about the description of Fatou components. Besides the types of periodic Fatou components that can occur for polynomials, there also exist so-called Baker domains, periodic components where all orbits converge to infinity, as well as wandering domains. In trying to find analogues of these one dimensional results, it is not clear which higher dimensional transcendental maps to consider. In this paper we find inspiration from the extensive work on the dynamics…
A Baker omitted value, in short \textit{bov} of a transcendental meromorphic function $f$ is an omitted value such that there is a disk $D$ centered at the bov for which each component of the boundary of $f^{-1}(D)$ is bounded. Assuming all the iterates $f^n$ are analytic in a neighborhood of its bov, this article proves that the number of Herman rings of a particular period is finite and every Julia component intersects the boundaries of at most finitely many Herman rings. Further, if the bov is the only limit point of the critical values then it is shown that $f$ has infinitely many repellin…
We study the dynamical behaviour of points in the boundaries of simply connected invariant Baker domains $U$ of meromorphic maps $f$ with a finite degree on $U$. We prove that if $f|_U$ is of hyperbolic or simply parabolic type, then almost every point in the boundary of $U$ with respect to harmonic measure escapes to infinity under iteration. On the contrary, if $f|_U$ is of doubly parabolic type, then almost every point in the boundary of $U$ with respect to harmonic measure has dense forward trajectory in the boundary of $U$, in particular the set of escaping points in the boundary of $U$ h…

We introduce a new technique that allows us to make progress on two long standing conjectures in transcendental dynamics: Baker's conjecture that a transcendental entire function of order less than 1/2 has no unbounded Fatou components, and Eremenko's conjecture that all the components of the escaping set of an entire function are unbounded. We show that both conjectures hold for many transcendental entire functions whose zeros all lie on the negative real axis, in particular those of order less than 1/2. Our proofs use a classical distortion theorem based on contraction of the hyperbolic metr…
Possible periods of Herman rings are studied for general meromorphic functions with at least one omitted value. A pole is called $H$-relevant for a Herman ring $H$ of such a function $f$ if it is surrounded by some Herman ring of the cycle containing $H$. In this article, a lower bound on the period $p$ of a Herman ring $H$ is found in terms of the number of $H$-relevant poles, say $h$. More precisely, it is shown that $p\geq \frac{h(h+1)}{2}$ whenever $f^j(H)$, for some $j$, surrounds a pole as well as the set of all omitted values of $f$. It is proved that $p \geq \frac{h(h+3)}{2}$ in the ot…
Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function and let $A(f)$ denote the set of points that escape to infinity `as fast as possible' under iteration. By writing $A(f)$ as a countable union of closed sets, called `levels' of $A(f)$, we obtain a new understanding of the structure of this set. For example, we show that if $U$ is a Fatou component in $A(f)$, then $\partial U\subset A(f)$ and this leads to significant new results and considerable improvements to existing results about $A(f)$. In particular, we study functions for which $A(f)$, and each of its levels, has the structure of an `infinite …
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational and transcendental entire functions has recently been extended to quasiregular maps in more than two real dimensions. Our goal in this paper is similar; we extend the iteration theory of analytic self-maps of the punctured plane to quasiregular self-maps of punctured space. We define the Julia set as the set of points for which the complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood of the point is a finite set. We show that the Julia set is non-empty, and shares many properties with the classical Julia set of an analytic function. These properties…
We describe conditions under which a multiply connected wandering domain of a transcendental meromorphic function with a finite number of poles must be a Baker wandering domain, and we discuss the possible eventual connectivity of Fatou components of transcendental meromorphic functions. We also show that if $f$ is meromorphic, $U$ is a bounded component of $F(f)$ and $V$ is the component of $F(f)$ such that $f(U)\subset V$, then $f$ maps each component of $\partial U$ onto a component of the boundary of $V$ in $\hat{\C}$. We give examples which show that our results are sharp; for example, we…
