We present a modification of the Press-Schechter (PS) formalism to derive general mass functions for primordial black holes (PBHs), considering their formation as being associated to the amplitude of linear energy density fluctuations. To accommodate a wide range of physical relations between the linear and non-linear conditions for collapse, we introduce an additional parameter to the PS mechanism, and that the collapse occurs at either a given cosmic time, or as fluctuations enter the horizon. We study the case where fluctuations obey Gaussian statistics and follow a primordial power spectrum of broken power-law form with a blue spectral index for small scales. We use the observed abundance of super-massive black holes (SMBH) to constrain the extended mass functions taking into account dynamical friction. We further constrain the modified PS by developing a method for converting existing constraints on the PBH mass fraction, derived assuming monochromatic mass distributions for PBHs, into constraints applicable for extended PBH mass functions. We find that when considering well established monochromatic constraints there are regions in parameter space where all the dark matter can be made of PBHs. Of special interest is the region for the characteristic mass of the distribution ~10^2 M_Sun, for a wide range of blue spectral indices in the scenario where PBHs form as they enter the horizon, where the linear threshold for collapse is of the order of the typical overdensities, as this is close to the black hole masses detected by LIGO which are difficult to explain by stellar collapse.
We construct merger trees based on the extended Press-Schechter theory (EPS) in order to study the merger rates of dark matter haloes over a range of present day mass ($10^{10}M_{\sun}\leq M_0 \leq10^{15}M_{\sun}$), progenitor mass $(5\times10^{-3}\leq ξ\leq1$) and redshift ($0\leq z\leq 3$). We used the first crossing distribution of a moving barrier of the form $B(S,z)=p(z)+q(z)S^γ$, proposed by Sheth & Tormen, to take into account the ellipsoidal nature of collapse. We find that the mean merger rate per halo $B_m/n$ depends on the halo mass $M$ as $M^{0.2}$ and on the redshift as $(\mathrm{…
The primordial black hole (PBH) is an effective candidate for dark matter. In this work, the PBH abundance $f$ is calculated in peak theory, with one or two perturbations in the inflaton potential. We construct an antisymmetric perturbation that can create a perfect plateau in the inflaton potential, leading inflation to the ultra-slow-roll stage. During this stage, the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation is remarkably enhanced on small scales, generating abundant PBHs. The PBH abundance $f\sim 0.1$ can be achieved in one or two typical mass windows at $10^{-17}M_\odot$, $10^{-…
We introduce a modification of the Press-Schechter formalism aimed to derive general mass functions for primordial black holes (PBHs). In this case, we start from primordial power spectra (PPS) which include a monochromatic spike, typical of ultra slow-roll inflation models. We consider the PBH formation as being associated to the amplitude of the spike on top of the linear energy density fluctuations, coming from a PPS with a blue index. By modelling the spike with a log-normal function, we study the properties of the resulting mass function spikes, and compare these to the underlying extende…
Lagrangian algorithms to simulate the evolution of cold dark matter (CDM) are invaluable tools to generate large suites of mock halo catalogues. In this paper, we first show that the main limitation of current semi-analytical schemes to simulate the displacement of CDM is their inability to model the evolution of overdensities in the initial density field, a limit that can be circumvented by detecting halo particles in the initial conditions. We thus propose `MUltiscale Spherical Collapse Lagrangian Evolution Using Press-Schechter' (muscle-ups), a new scheme that reproduces the results from La…
We study halo mass functions with the Press-Schechter formalism for interacting dark matter models, where matter power spectra are damped due to dark acoustic oscillations in the early universe. After adopting a smooth window function, we calibrate the analytical model with numerical simulations from the "effective theory of structure formation" (ETHOS) project and fix the model parameters in the high mass regime, $M_{\rm h}\gtrsim3\times10^{10}\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$. We also perform high-resolution cosmological simulations with halo masses down to $M_{\rm h}\sim10^8\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$ to cover a w…
It has been recently established that, if the nonlinear relationship between the overdensity perturbations and the curvature perturbations are taken into account, non-Gaussianity is introduced in the overdensity statistics which alters the expected primordial black hole abundance. This is explored by using the nonlinear relationship between the overdensities and curvature perturbations up to second order where a negative skewness and positive kurtosis aims at lowering and increasing the abundance while an abundance comparable to Gaussian perturbations is obtained by adjusting the amplitude of …
Structure formation provides a strong test of any cosmic acceleration model because a successful dark energy model must not inhibit {\black or overpredict} the development of observed large-scale structures. Traditional approaches to studies of structure formation in the presence of dark energy or a modified gravity implement a modified Press-Schechter formalism, which relates the linear overdensities to the abundance of dark matter haloes it at the same time. We critically examine the universality of the Press-Schechter formalism for different cosmologies, and show that the halo abundance is …
We reinspect the calculation for the mass fraction of primordial black holes (PBHs) which are formed from primordial perturbations, finding that performing the calculation using the comoving curvature perturbation $\mathcal{R}_{c}$ in the standard way vastly overestimates the number of PBHs, by many orders of magnitude. This is because PBHs form shortly after horizon entry, meaning modes significantly larger than the PBH are unobservable and should not affect whether a PBH forms or not - this important effect is not taken into account by smoothing the distribution in the standard fashion. We d…
We study the effect of the nonlinear relation between density and curvature perturbations on the formation of PBHs. By calculating the variance and skewness of the density perturbation we derive the non-Gaussian property. As a criterion for PBH formation, the compaction function is used and it is found that larger curvature perturbations are required due to the nonlinear effect. We estimate the PBH abundance based on the Press-Schechter formalism with non-Gaussian probability density function during Radiation dominated era. It is found that the nonlinear effect slightly suppresses the PBH form…
We study the effect of dark matter (DM) being encapsulated in primordial black holes (PBHs) on the power spectrum of density fluctuations $P(k)$; we also look at its effect on the abundance of haloes and their clustering. We allow the growth of Poisson fluctuations since matter and radiation equality and study both monochromatic and extended PBH mass distributions. We present updated monochromatic black hole mass constraints by demanding $<10\%$ deviations from the $Λ$ cold dark matter power spectrum at a scale of $k=1$hMpc$^{-1}$. Our results show that PBHs with masses $>10^4$h$^{-1}M_\odot$ …
In this paper, the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) is reinvestigated using inflationary $α$-attractors. Instead of using the conventional Press-Schechter theory to compute the abundance, the optimized peaks theory is used, which was developed in Ref. \cite{Yoo:2018kvb,Yoo:2020dkz}. This method takes into account how curvature perturbations play a rôle in modifying the mass of primordial black holes. Analyzing the model proposed in \cite{Mahbub:2019uhl} it is seen that the horizon mass of the collapsed Hubble patch is larger by $\mathcal{O}(10)$ compared to the usual computation. Mor…
We propose a model of inflation capable of generating a population of light black holes (about $10^{-16}$ - $10^{-14}$ solar masses) that might account for a significant fraction of the dark matter in the Universe. The effective potential of the model features an approximate inflection point arising from two-loop order logarithmic corrections in well-motivated and perturbative particle physics examples. This feature decelerates the inflaton before the end of inflation, enhancing the primordial spectrum of scalar fluctuations and triggering efficient black hole production with a peaked mass dis…
In this paper we present a class of potentials derived by no-scale supergravity in order to explain the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the Universe. By breaking the SU(2,1)/SU(2)$\times$U(1) symmetry we fix one of the two chiral fields and we derive effective scalar potentials which are capable of generating PBHs. Specifically, we modify well-known superpotentials, which reduce to Starobinsky-like effective scalar potentials. Thus, we derive scalar potentials which, on the one hand, explain the production of PBHs and, on the other hand, they conserve the transformation laws, wh…
We introduce a statistical method for estimating magnetic field fluctuations generated from primordial black hole (PBH) populations. To that end, we consider monochromatic and extended Press-Schechter PBH mass functions, such that each constituent is capable of producing its own magnetic field due to some given physical mechanism. Assuming linear correlation between magnetic field fluctuations and matter over-densities, our estimates depend on the mass function, the physical field generation mechanism by each PBH constituent, and the characteristic PBH separation. After computing the power spe…

The primordial black hole (PBH) abundance evaluated by the conventional Press-Schechter (PS) probability distribution is shown to be equivalent to the high-peak limit of a special point-like peak statistics via unphysical dimensionality reduction of the Bardeen-Bond-Kaiser-Szalay (BBKS) theory. The fact that PBHs are formed at high peak values $ν_c \gg 1$ leads to a systematic bias proportional to $ν_c^3$ between the predictions of the PS method and the physical BBKS peak theory in a general three-dimensional spatial configuration. As long as realistic PBHs are collapsed from three-dimensional…
Recent observations with JWST have identified several bright galaxy candidates at $z\gtrsim 10$, some of which appear unusually massive (up to $\sim 10^{11}\ \rm M_{\odot}$). Such early formation of massive galaxies is difficult to reconcile with standard $Λ\rm CDM$ predictions, demanding very high star formation efficiency (SFE), possibly even in excess of the cosmic baryon mass budget in collapsed structures. With an idealized analysis based on linear perturbation theory and the Press-Schechter formalism, we show that the observed massive galaxy candidates can be explained with lower SFE tha…
We study the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) during the preheating stage that follows a chaotic inflationary phase. The scalar fields present in the process are evolved numerically using a modified version of the HLATTICE code. From the output of the numerical simulation, we compute the probability distribution of curvature fluctuations, paying particular attention to sub-horizon scales. We find that in some specific models these modes grow to large amplitudes developing highly non-Gaussian probability distributions. We then calculate PBH abundances using the standard Press-Schecht…
The non-singular bouncing cosmology is an alternative paradigm to inflation, wherein the background energy density vanishes at the bounce point, in the context of Einstein gravity. Therefore, the non-linear effects in the evolution of density fluctuations ($δρ$) may be strong in the bounce phase, which potentially provides a mechanism to enhance the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). This article presents a comprehensive illustration for PBH enhancement due to the bounce phase. To calculate the non-linear evolution of $δρ$, the Raychaudhuri equation is numerically solved here. Since t…
The mass distribution of dark matter halos is a sensitive probe of primordial non-Gaussianity (NG). We derive an analytical formula of the halo mass function by perturbatively computing excursion set path-integrals for a non-Gaussian density field with non-vanishing skewness, fnl. We assume a stochastic barrier model which captures the main features of the ellipsoidal collapse of halos. Contrary to previous results based on extensions of the Press-Schechter formalism to NG initial conditions, we find that the non-spherical collapse of halos directly alter the signature of primordial NG. This p…
In this paper we present a class of models in order to explain the production of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) and Gravitational Waves (GWs) in the Universe. These models are based on no-scale theory. By breaking the SU(2,1)/SU(2)$\times$U(1) symmetry we fix one of the two chiral fields and we derive effective scalar potentials which are capable of generating PBHs and GWs. As it is known in the literature there is an important unification of the no-scale models, which leads to the Starobinsky effective scalar potential based on the coset SU(2,1)/SU(2)$\times$U(1). We use this unification in or…
This work investigates the formation of primordial black holes within a radiation fluid with an anisotropic pressure. We focus our attention on the initial conditions describing cosmological perturbations in the super horizon regime, using a covariant form of the equation of state in terms of pressure and energy density gradients. The effect of the anisotropy is to modify the initial shape of the cosmological perturbations with respect to the isotropic case. Using the dependence of the threshold $δ_\mathrm{c}$ for primordial black holes with respect to the shape of cosmological perturbations, …
Analytic formulas reproducing the warm dark matter (WDM) primordial spectra are obtained for WDM particles decoupling in and out of thermal equilibrium which provide the initial data for WDM non-linear structure formation. We compute and analyze the corresponding WDM overdensities and compare them to the CDM case. We consider the ratio of the WDM to CDM primordial spectrum and the WDM to CDM overdensities: they turn to be self-similar functions of k/k_{1/2} and R/R_{1/2} respectively, k_{1/2} and R_{1/2} being the wavenumber and length where the WDM spectrum and overdensity are 1/2 of the resp…
We compute the effect of primordial non-Gaussianity on the halo mass function, using excursion set theory. In the presence of non-Gaussianity the stochastic evolution of the smoothed density field, as a function of the smoothing scale, is non-markovian and beside "local" terms that generalize Press-Schechter (PS) theory, there are also "memory" terms, whose effect on the mass function can be computed using the formalism developed in the first paper of this series. We find that, when computing the effect of the three-point correlator on the mass function, a PS-like approach which consists in ne…
Weinberg et al. calculated the anthropic likelihood of the cosmological constant using a model assuming that the number of observers is proportional to the total mass of gravitationally collapsed objects, with mass greater than a certain threshold, at t \rightarrow \infty. We argue that Weinberg's model is biased toward small Λ, and to try to avoid this bias we modify his model in a way that the number of observers is proportional to the number of collapsed objects, with mass and time equal to certain preferred mass and time scales. Compared to Weinberg's model, this model gives a lower anthro…
Using the global 21-cm signal measurement by the EDGES collaboration, we derive constraints on the fraction of the dark matter that is in the form of primordial black holes (PBHs) with masses in the range $10^{15}$-$10^{17}\,$g. Improving upon previous analyses, we consider the effect of the X-ray heating of the intergalactic medium on these constraints, and also use the full shape of the 21-cm absorption feature in our inference. In order to account for the anomalously deep absorption amplitude, we also consider an excess radio background motivated by LWA1 and ARCADE2 observations. Because th…
We explore the prospect of producing primordial black holes around the solar mass region during an early matter domination epoch. The early matter-dominated epoch can arise when a moduli field comes to dominate the energy density of the Universe prior to big bang nucleosynthesis. The absence of radiation pressure during a matter-dominated epoch enhances primordial black hole formation from the gravitational collapse of primordial density fluctuations. In particular, we find that primordial black holes are produced in the $0.1-10~M_{\odot}$ mass range with a favorable choice of parameters in th…

Primordial black holes may have formed in the radiative era of the early Universe from the collapse of large enough amplitude perturbations of the metric. These correspond to non linear energy density perturbations characterized by an amplitude larger than a certain threshold, measured when the perturbations reenter the cosmological horizon. The process of primordial black hole formation is studied here within spherical symmetry, using the gradient expansion approximation in the long wavelength limit, where the pressure gradients are small, and the initial perturbations are functions only of a…
We compare primordial black hole (PBH) constraints on the power spectrum and mass distributions using the traditional Press Schechter formalism, peaks theory, and a recently developed version of peaks theory relevant to PBHs. We show that, provided the PBH formation criteria and the power spectrum smoothing are treated consistently, the constraints only vary by $\sim$10\% between methods (a difference that will become increasingly important with better data). Our robust constraints from PBHs take into account the effects of critical collapse, the non-linear relation between $ζ$ and $δ$, and th…
We study the halo mass function and inner halo structure at high redshifts ($z\geq5$) for a suite of simulations within the structure formation ETHOS framework. Scenarios such as cold dark matter (CDM), thermal warm dark matter (WDM), and dark acoustic oscillations (DAO) of various strengths are contained in ETHOS with just two parameters $h_{\rm peak}$ and $k_{\rm peak}$, the amplitude and scale of the first DAO peak. The Extended Press-Schechter (EPS) formalism with a smooth-$k$ filter is able to predict the cut-off in the halo mass function created by the suppression of small scale power in…
We study the spherical collapse model in the presence of quintessence with negligible speed of sound. This case is particularly motivated for w<-1 as it is required by stability. As pressure gradients are negligible, quintessence follows dark matter during the collapse. The spherical overdensity behaves as a separate closed FLRW universe, so that its evolution can be studied exactly. We derive the critical overdensity for collapse and we use the extended Press-Schechter theory to study how the clustering of quintessence affects the dark matter mass function. The effect is dominated by the modi…
Using the concept of apparent horizon for dynamical black holes, we revisit the formation of primordial black holes (PBH) in the early universe for both linear and non-linear regimes. First, we develop the perturbation theory for spherically symmetric spacetimes to study the formation of spherical PBHs in linear regime and we fix two gauges. We also introduce a well defined gauge invariant quantity for the expansion. Using this quantity, we argue that PBHs do not form in the linear regime. Finally, we study the non-linear regime. We adopt the spherical collapse picture by taking a closed FRW m…
We study perturbations of a complex scalar field during reheating with no self-interaction in the regime $ μ\gg H$, when the scalar field has a fast oscillatory behaviour (close to a pressure-less fluid). We focus on the precise determination of the instability scale and find it differs from that associated with a real scalar field. We further look at the probability that unstable fluctuations form Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) obtaining a significant production of tiny PBHs which quickly evaporate and may subsequently leave a population of Planck-mass relics. We finally impose restrictions on…
Non-thermal histories for the early universe have received notable attention as they are a rich source of phenomenology, while also being well motivated by top-down approaches to beyond the Standard Model physics. The early (pre-BBN) matter phase in these models leads to enhanced growth of density perturbations on sub-Hubble scales. Here we consider whether primordial black hole formation associated with the enhanced growth is in conflict with existing observations. Such constraints depend on the tilt of the primordial power spectrum, and we find that non-thermal histories are tightly constrai…
We explore the conditions prevailing in primordial planets in the framework of the HGD cosmologies as discussed by Gibson and Schild. The initial stages of condensation of planet-mass H-4He gas clouds in trillion-planet clumps is set at 300,000 yr (0.3My) following the onset of plasma instabilities when ambient temperatures were >1000K. Eventual collapse of the planet-cloud into a solid structure takes place against the background of an expanding universe with declining ambient temperatures. Stars form from planet mergers within the clumps and die by supernovae on overeating of planets. For pl…
Primordial magnetic fields generated in the early universe are subject of considerable investigation, and observational limits on their strength are required to constrain the theory. Due to their impact on the reionization process, the strength of primordial fields can be limited using the latest data on reionization and the observed UV-luminosity function of high-redshift galaxies. Given the steep faint-end slope of the luminosity function, faint galaxies contribute substantial ionizing photons, and the low-luminosity cutoff has an impact on the total budget thereof. Magnetic pressure from pr…
We revisit the derivation of the mass function and the bias of dark matter halos for non-Gaussian initial conditions. We use a steepest-descent approach to point out that exact results can be obtained for the high-mass tail of the halo mass function and the two-point correlation of massive halos. Focusing on primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type, we check that these results agree with numerical simulations. The high-mass cutoff of the halo mass function takes the same form as the one obtained from the Press-Schechter formalism, but with a linear threshold $δ_L$ that depends on the defin…
