With the commercial launch of 5G technologies and fast pace of expansion of cellular network infrastructure, it is expected that cellular and mobile networks traffic will exponentially increase. In addition, new services are expected to spread widely, such as the Internet of Things connected to mobile networks. This will add additional burden in terms of traffic load. As a result, some studies suggest that mobile traffic may increase more than 1000 times compared to the amount of traffic that is generated nowadays. This means that network resources for mobile services must be managed and controlled in a smart way, because resources are always limited, but the demand for services and the need for keeping user equipment always connected to mobile networks can be considered unlimited, leaving gap between huge service demands and available resources. In order to narrow this gap, major consideration should be given to the management of network resources to avoid network congestion and performance degradation during peak hour/s and traffic spikes, and allow access to network services to more customers when demand is high. On the other hand, guaranteeing quality of service requirements for the wide range of new services is another challenge that must be met in 5G networks. In this paper we will review 5G networks characteristics and specifications, then carry out a survey on resource management and QoS provisioning to improve and manage resource utilization in 5G networks.
The increasing demand for advanced services in wireless networks raises the problem for quality of service (QoS) provisioning with proper resource management. In this research, such a provisioning technique for wireless networks is performed by Call Admission Control (CAC). A new approach in CAC named by Uniform Fractional Band (UFB) is proposed in this work for the wireless networks for providing proper priority between new calls and handover calls. This UFB scheme is basically a new style of handover priority scheme. Handover priority is provided by two stages in this scheme which help the n…
For the current 5G era, the deployment of small cells in residential and commercial areas plays an imperious preamble in improving network coverage and the quality of service (QoS). Major technical problems associated with the mass deployment of small cells, such as femtocells are interference management and QoS provisioning. These are important for service-providing operators because the system capacity and achievable data rates mainly depend on interference. Future generation wireless networks will use autonomous and distributed architecture for ameliorating the efficacy and flexibility of c…
Wireless traffic attributable to machine learning (ML) inference workloads is increasing with the proliferation of applications and smart wireless devices leveraging ML inference. Owing to limited compute capabilities at these "edge" devices, achieving high inference accuracy often requires coordination with a remote compute node or "cloud" over the wireless cellular network. The accuracy of this distributed inference is, thus, impacted by the communication rate and reliability offered by the cellular network. In this paper, an analytical framework is proposed to characterize inference accurac…
Cellular networks are among the major energy hoggers of communication networks, and their contributions to the global energy consumption increase rapidly due to the surges of data traffic. With the development of green energy technologies, base stations (BSs) can be powered by green energy in order to reduce the on-grid energy consumption, and subsequently reduce the carbon footprints. However, equipping a BS with a green energy system incurs additional capital expenditure (CAPEX) that is determined by the size of the green energy generator, the battery capacity, and other installation expense…
Cloud computing systems promise to offer subscription-oriented, enterprise-quality computing services to users worldwide. With the increased demand for delivering services to a large number of users, they need to offer differentiated services to users and meet their quality expectations. Existing resource management systems in data centers are yet to support Service Level Agreement (SLA)-oriented resource allocation, and thus need to be enhanced to realize cloud computing and utility computing. In addition, no work has been done to collectively incorporate customer-driven service management, c…

We propose a greedy heuristic algorithm to solve the network-wide directional link allocation problem, thereby estimating the achievable capacity and coverage of multi-user mm-wave networks. Our results show that inte…

The combination of business goal input and capability orchestration provides a basis for agile monetization of domain re…
Network virtualization and SDN-based routing allow carriers to flexibly configure their networks in response to demand and unexpected network disruptions. However, cellular networks, by nature, pose some unique challenges because of user mobility and control/data plane partitioning, which calls for new architectures and provisioning paradigms. In this paper, we address the latter part by devising algorithms that can provision the data plane to create a distributed Mobile Edge Cloud (MEC), which provides opportunities for lower latencies and increased resilience (through placement of network fu…

For device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying a cellular network with uplink resource sharing, both cellular and D2D links cause significant co-channel interference. In this paper, we address the critical issue of interference management in the network considering a practical path loss model incorporating both line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. To reduce the severe interference caused by active D2D links, we consider a mode selection scheme based on the maximum received signal strength (MRSS) for each user equipment (UE) to control the D2D-to-cellular inter…
Mobile edge computing (MEC) has attracted great interests as a promising approach to augment computational capabilities of mobile devices. An important issue in the MEC paradigm is computation offloading. In this paper, we propose an integrated framework for computation offloading and interference management in wireless cellular networks with mobile edge computing. In this integrated framework, the MEC server makes the offloading decision according to the local computation overhead estimated by all user equipments (UEs) and the offloading overhead estimated by the MEC server itself. Then, the …
Novel use cases and verticals such as connected cars and human-robot cooperation in the areas of 5G and Tactile Internet can significantly benefit from the flexibility and reduced latency provided by Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). Existing frameworks managing and orchestrating MEC and NFV are either tightly coupled or completely separated. The former design is inflexible and increases the complexity of one framework. Whereas, the latter leads to inefficient use of computation resources because information are not shared. We introduce APMEC, a dedic…
Internet has shown itself to be a catalyst for economic growth and social equity but its potency is thwarted by the fact that the Internet is off limits for the vast majority of human beings. Mobile phones---the fastest growing technology in the world that now reaches around 80\% of humanity---can enable universal Internet access if it can resolve coverage problems that have historically plagued previous cellular architectures (2G, 3G, and 4G). These conventional architectures have not been able to sustain universal service provisioning since these architectures depend on having enough users p…
Quality of Experience (QoE) provisioning in heterogeneous access networks (HANs) can be achieved via handoffs. The current approaches for QoE-aware handoffs either lack the availability of a network path probing method or lack the availability of efficient methods for QoE prediction. Further, the current approaches do not explore the benefits of proactive QoE-aware handoffs such that user's QoE is maximized by learning from past network conditions and by actions taken by the mobile device regarding handoffs. In this paper, our contributions are two-fold. First, we propose, develop and validate…
With the growing adoption of Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), large-scale NFV infrastructure deployments are gaining momentum. Such infrastructures are home to thousands of network Service Function Chains (SFCs), each composed of a chain of virtual network functions (VNFs) that are processing incoming traffic flows. Unfortunately, in such environments, the failure of a single node may break down several VNFs and thereby breaking many service chains at the same time. In this paper, we address this particular problem and investigate possible solutions …
Cellular operators are continuously densifying their networks to cope with the ever-increasing capacity demand. Furthermore, an extreme densification phase for cellular networks is foreseen to fulfill the ambitious fifth generation (5G) performance requirements. Network densification improves spectrum utilization and network capacity by shrinking base stations' (BSs) footprints and reusing the same spectrum more frequently over the spatial domain. However, network densification also increases the handover (HO) rate, which may diminish the capacity gains for mobile users due to HO delays. In hi…

Adaptive HTTP streaming with centralized consideration of multiple streams has gained increasing interest. It poses a special challenge that the interests of both content provider and network operator need to be deliberately balanced. More importantly, the adaptation strategy is required to be flexible enough to be ported to various systems that work under different network environments, QoE levels, and economic objectives. To address these challenges, we propose a Markov Decision Process (MDP) based network-assisted adaptation framework, wherein cost of buffering, significant playback variati…
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication is crucial in developing Internet of Things (IoT). As it is well known that cellular networks have been considered as the primary infrastructure for M2M communications, there are several key issues to be addressed in order to deploy M2M communications over cellular networks. Notably, the rapid growth of M2M traffic dramatically increases energy consumption, as well as degrades the performance of existing Human-to-Human (H2H) traffic. Sustainable operation technology and resource management are efficacious ways for solving these issues. In this paper, we i…
Fog computing becomes a promising technology to process user's requests near the proximity of users to reduce response time for latency-sensitive requests. In this paper we introduce our vision of a Cognitive Computing Continuum to address the changing IT service provisioning towards a distributed, opportunistic, self-managed collaboration between heterogeneous devices outside the traditional data center boundaries. The focal point of this continuum are cognitive devices, which have to make decisions autonomously using their on-board computation and storage capacity based on information sensed from their environment. Such devices are moving and cannot rely on fixed infrastructure elements, but instead realise on-the-fly networking and thus freque…
The continuing expansion of Internet media consumption has increased traffic volumes, and hence congestion, on access links. In response, both mobile and wireline ISPs must either increase capacity or perform traffic engineering over existing resources. Unfortunately, provisioning timescales are long, the process is costly, and single-homing means operators cannot balance across the last mile. Inspired by energy and transport networks, we propose demand-side management of users to reduce the impact caused by consumption patterns out-pacing that of edge network provision. By directly affecting …
Provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) is the key concern for Radio Resource Management now-a-days. In this paper, an efficient dynamic channel borrowing architecture has been proposed that ensures better QoS. The proposed scheme lessens the problem of excessive overall call blocking probability without sacrificing bandwidth utilization. If a channel is borrowed from adjacent cells and causing interference, we also propose architecture that diminishes the interference problem. The numerical results show comparison between the proposed scheme and the conventional scheme before channel borrowi…
Flying and ground-based cars require various services such as autonomous driving, remote pilot, infotainment, and remote diagnosis. Each service requires specific Quality of Service (QoS) and network features. Therefore, network slicing can be a solution to fulfill the requirements of various services. Some services, such as infotainment, may have similar requirements to serve flying and ground-based cars. Therefore, some slices can serve both kinds of cars. However, when network slice resource sharing is too aggressive, slices can not meet QoS requirements, where resource under-provisioning c…

Mobility management and bandwidth management are two major research issues in a cellular mobile network. Mobility management consists of two basic components: location management and handoff management. To Provide QoS to the users Handoff is a key element in wireless cellular networks. It is often initiated either by crossing a cell boundary or by deterioration in the quality of signal in the current channel. In this paper, a new admission control policy for cellular mobile network is being proposed. Two important QoS parameter in cellular networks are Call Dropping Probability (CDP) and Hando…

Network slicing is one of the key features for 5G networks to be able to accommodate the anticipated diversity of applications and business actors in a resource-efficient manner. While significant progress has already been achieved at 3GPP specifications level with regard to the system architectural and functional aspects for the realisation of network slicing in 5G networks, management solutions for the exploitation of this feature in the Next Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) are still at a very incipient stage. In this context, this paper presents a framework for the management of ne…

LTEs uplink (UL) efficiency critically depends on how the interference across different cells is controlled. The unique characteristics of LTEs modulation and UL resource assignment poses considerable challenges in achieving this goal because most LTE deployments have 1:1 frequency re-use, and the uplink interference can vary considerably across successive time slots. In this work, we propose LeAP, a measurement data driven machine learning paradigm for power control to manage up-link interference in LTE. The data driven approach has the inherent advantage that the solution adapts based on net…

Thus the tailored provisioning of an end-to-end network slicing solution to a vertical industry that consists of multiple use cases is a critical issue, which motivates this article, aimed at exploring this never-addressed and challenging research proble…
During the past few decades wireless technology has seen a tremendous growth. The recent introduction of high-end mobile devices has further increased subscriber's demand for high bandwidth. Current cellular systems require manual configuration and management of networks, which is now costly, time consuming and error prone due to exponentially increasing rate of mobile users and nodes. This leads to introduction of self organizing capabilities for network management with minimum human involvement. It is expected to permit higher end user Quality of Service (QoS) along with less operational and…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) radio access technologies (RAT) are expected to become a critical part of the future cellular ecosystem providing an abundant amount of bandwidth in areas with high traffic demands. However, extremely directional antenna radiation patterns that need to be utilized at both transmit and receive sides of a link to overcome severe path losses, dynamic blockage of propagation paths by large static and small dynamic objects, macro- and micromobility of user equipment (UE) makes provisioning of reliable service over THz/mmWave RATs an extremely complex tas…
