We study the notion of work fluctuations in quantum field theory, highlighting that the most common definitions used in finite-dimensional quantum systems cannot be applied to quantum field theory (QFT). Then we propose work distributions that are compatible with QFT and we show that they satisfy the first law of thermodynamics up to second moments. We also show how these distributions satisfy Crooks theorem and provide a fully non-perturbative thermodynamic analysis of spacetime localized unitary processes on a quantum field.
Recently, it has been shown that for out-of-equilibrium systems, there are additional constraints on thermodynamical evolution besides the ordinary second law. These form a new family of second laws of thermodynamics, which are equivalent to the monotonicity of quantum Rényi divergences. The second law of classical thermodynamics, based on the positivity of the entropy production, only holds for deterministic processes. Therefore the Second Law in stochastic quantum thermodynamics may not hold. By making a fundamental connection between thermodynamics and information theory we will introduce a new way of defining the Second Law which holds for both deterministic classical and stochastic quantum thermodynamics. Our work incorporates information well into the Second Law and also provides a thermodynamic operational meaning for negative and positive entropy production.

Arguments are presented that the assumption, implicit to traditional statistical thermodynamics, that at zero temperature all erratic motions cease, should be dispensed with. Assuming instead a random ultrarelativistic unobservable motion, similar to zitterbewegung, it is demonstrated that in an ideal gas of classical particles the energy equipartition fails in a way that complies with the third law of thermodynamics.
We demonstrate an area law bound on the ground state entanglement entropy of a wide class of gapless quantum states of matter using a strategy called local entanglement thermodynamics. The bound depends only on thermodynamic data, actually a single exponent, the hyper-scaling violation exponent $θ$. All systems in $d$ spatial dimensions obeying our scaling assumptions and with $θ< d-1$ obey the area law, while systems with $θ= d-1$ can violate the area law at most logarithmically. We investigate the fine-grained uncertainty relations for qubit system by measurements corresponding respectively to two and three spin operators. Then we derive the general bound for a combination of two probabilities of projective measurements in mutually unbiased bases in $d$-dimensional Hilbert space. We reconsider the basic building blocks of classical phenomenological thermodynamics. While doing so we show that the zeroth law is a redundant postulate for the theory by deriving it from the first and the second laws. This is in stark contrast to the prevalent conception that the three laws, the zeroth, first and second, are all necessary and independent axioms.
In quantum statistical mechanics, equilibrium states have been shown to be the typical states for a system that is entangled with its environment, suggesting a possible identification between thermodynamic and von Neumann entropies. In this paper, we investigate how the relaxation toward equilibrium is made possible through interactions that do not lead to significant exchange of energy, and argue for the validity of the second law of thermodynamics at the microscopic scale.
The quantum thermodynamic property of the fractional damping system is investigated extensively. A fractional power-law decaying entropy function is revealed which presents another evidence for the validity of the third law of thermodynamics in the quantum dissipative region. Several non-trivial characters are excavated such as that the entropy varies from a non-linear diverging function to a semi-linear decaying function of the fractional exponent as the temperature tends to absolute zero.

The role of the third law of thermodynamics in the Szilard engine has been addressed. If the ground state is non-degenerate, the entropy production defined as the work extractable from the engine divided by temperature vanishes as temperature approaches zero due to the third law. The degenerate ground state induced by the symmetry or by accidence gives rise to non-zero entropy production at zero temperature associated with the residual entropy. Various physical situations such as the SZE consisting of bosons or fermions either with or without interaction have been investigated.
A heat engine undergoes a cyclic operation while in equilibrium with the net result of conversion of heat into work. Quantum effects such as superposition of states can improve an engine's efficiency by breaking detailed balance, but this improvement comes at a cost due to excess entropy generated from collapse of superpositions on measurement. We consider a recently proposed model of driven open quantum microcircuit [F. Pellegrini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 060401 (2011)] amenable to experimental investigations. We show that such an open quantum system provides a concrete physical instance where to prove that modeling its time-evolution with a dynamics lacking complete positivity conflicts with the second law of thermodynamics.
A new thermodynamic inequality is derived which leads to the maximum work that can be extracted from multi-heat baths with the assistance of discrete quantum feedback control. The maximum work is determined by the free-energy difference and a generalized mutual information content between the thermodynamic system and the feedback controller. This maximum work can exceed that in conventional thermodynamics and, in the case of a heat cycle with two heat baths, the heat efficiency can be greater than that of the Carnot cycle.
