In this paper, we review the use of parity as a detection observable in quantum metrology as well as introduce some original findings with regards to measurement resolution in Ramsey spectroscopy and quantum non-demolition (QND) measures of atomic parity. Parity was first introduced in the context of Ramsey spectroscopy as an alternative to atomic state detection. It was latter adapted for use in quantum optical interferometry where it has been shown to be the optimal detection observable saturating the quantum Cramér-Rao bound for path symmetric states. We include a brief review of the basics of phase estimation and the connection between parity-based detection and the quantum Fisher information as it applies to quantum optical interferometry. We also discuss the efforts made in experimental methods of measuring photon-number parity and close the paper with a discussion on the use of parity leading to enhanced measurement resolution in multi-atom spectroscopy. We show how this may be of use in the construction of high-precision multi-atom atomic clocks.
An entangled state prepared in the decoherence free sub-space together with a Ramsey type measurement can probe parity violation in heavy alkali ions like Ba+ or Ra+. Here we propose an experiment with Ba+ ions as an example to measure the small parity violating effect in this system.
We investigate the utility of parity detection to achieve Heisenberg-limited phase estimation for optical interferometry. We consider the parity detection with several input states that have been shown to exhibit sub shot-noise interferometry with their respective detection schemes. We show that with parity detection, all these states achieve the sub-shot noise limited phase estimate. Thus making the parity detection a unified detection strategy for quantum optical metrology. We also consider quantum states that are a combination of a NOON states and a dual-Fock state, which gives a great deal…
We present a method of directly obtaining the parity of a Gaussian state of light without recourse to photon-number counting. The scheme uses only a simple balanced homodyne technique, and intensity correlation. Thus interferometric schemes utilizing coherent or squeezed light, and parity detection may be practically implemented for an arbitrary photon flux. Specifically we investigate a two-mode, squeezed-light, Mach-Zehnder interferometer and show how the parity of the output state may be obtained. We also show that the detection may be described independent of the parity operator, and that …
An entangled state prepared in a decoherence free sub-space together with a Ramsey type measurement can probe parity violation in heavy alkali ions like Ba+ or Ra+. Here we propose an experiment with Ba+ as an example to measure the small parity violating effect in this system. It has been shown that a measurement on a maximally correlated system will reduce the uncertainty as compared to that on a single ion measurement. In addition it also provides a feasible solution to measure the nuclear spin dependent part of the total parity violating light shift in an ionic system which has so far not …
We study the sensitivity and resolution of phase measurement in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two-mode squeezed vacuum (<n> photons on average). We show that super-resolution and sub-Heisenberg sensitivity is obtained with parity detection. In particular, in our setup, dependence of the signal on the phase evolves <n> times faster than in traditional schemes, and uncertainty in the phase estimation is better than 1/<n>.
Photon number states are assigned a parity of if their photon number is even and a parity of if odd. The parity operator, which is minus one to the power of the photon number operator, is a Hermitian operator and thus a quantum mechanical observable though it has no classical analog, the concept being meaningless in the context of classical light waves. In this paper we review work on the application of the parity operator to the problem of quantum metrology for the detection of small phase shifts with quantum optical interferometry using highly entangled field states such as the so-called N00…
The aim of quantum metrology is to estimate target parameters as precisely as possible. In this paper, we consider quantum metrology based on symmetry-protected adiabatic transformation. We introduce a ferromagnetic Ising model with a transverse field as a probe and consider the estimation of a longitudinal field. Without the transverse field, the ground state of the probe is given by the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, and thus the Heisenberg limit estimation of the longitudinal field can be achieved through parity measurement. In our scheme, full information of the longitudinal field enco…
To acquire the best path-entangled photon Fock states for robust quantum optical metrology with parity detection, we calculate phase information from a lossy interferometer by using twin entangled Fock states. We show that (a) when loss is less than 50% twin entangled Fock states with large photon number difference give higher visibility while when loss is higher than 50% the ones with less photon number difference give higher visibility; (b) twin entangled Fock states with large photon number difference give sub-shot-noise limit sensitivity for phase detection in a lossy environment. This res…
We study the precise phase estimation using squeezed states with photon losses present. Our exact quantum Fisher information calculation shows significant quantum enhancement and thus reveals the benchmark for practical quantum metrology in this noisy scenario. However, we find that the existing parity measurement scheme [P.M. Anisimov et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 103602 (2010)] behaves worse than even classical cases given very small losses, unless we take an appropriate loss dependent phase shift. Using our formulae, the two optimized aspects including the pre-detection phase shift and the c…
We propose and analyze a new approach based on parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric microcavities with balanced gain and loss to enhance the performance of cavity-assisted metrology. We identify the conditions under which $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric microcavities allow to improve sensitivity beyond what is achievable in loss-only systems. We discuss its application to the detection of mechanical motion, and show that the sensitivity is significantly enhanced in the vicinity of the transition point from unbroken- to broken-$\mathcal{PT}$ regimes. We believe that our results open a new direction …
By considering matter wave bright solitons from weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a double-well potential, we study the formation of macroscopic non-classical states, including Schrödinger-cat superposition states and maximally path entangled $N00N$-states. With these macroscopic states, we examine Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the context of parity measurements, in order to obtain Heisenberg limit accuracy for linear phase shift measurement. We reveal that the ratio between two-body scattering length and intra-well hopping parameter can be measured with the scaling beyond t…
Analyses based on quantum metrology have shown that the ability to localize the positions of two incoherent point sources can be significantly enhanced through the use of mode sorting. Here we theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of partial coherence on the sub-diffraction limit localization of two sources based on parity sorting. With the prior information of a negative and real-valued degree of coherence, higher Fisher information is obtained than that for the incoherent case. Our results pave the way to clarifying the role of coherence in quantum limited metrology.
By means of the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators and Dirac notation, we introduce a new kind of asymmetric integration projection operators in entangled state representations. These asymmetric projection operators are proved to be the Hermitian operator. Then, we rigorously demonstrate that they correspond to a parity measurement combined with a beam splitter when any two-mode quantum state passes through such device. Therefore we obtain a new relation between a Hermitian operator and the entangled state representation. As applications, we recover the previous re…
Photonic states with large and fixed photon numbers, such as Fock states, enable quantum-enhanced metrology but remain an experimentally elusive resource. A potentially simple, deterministic and scalable way to generate these states consists of fully exciting $N$ quantum emitters equally coupled to a common photonic reservoir, which leads to a collective decay known as Dicke superradiance. The emitted $N$-photon state turns out to be a highly entangled multimode state, and to characterise its metrological properties in this work we: (i) develop theoretical tools to compute the Quantum Fisher I…
We present a new operator method in the Heisenberg representation to obtain the signal of parity measurement within a lossless SU(1,1) interferometer. Based on this method, it is convenient to derive the parity signal directly in terms of input states, including general Gaussian or non-Gaussian state. As applications, we revisit the signal of parity measurement within an SU(1,1) interferometer when a coherent or thermal state and a squeezed vacuum state are considered as input states. In addition, we also obtain the parity signal of a Fock state when it passes through an SU(1,1) interferometer…
It has been proposed and demonstrated that path-entangled Fock states (PEFSs) are robust against photon loss over NOON states [S. D. Huver \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{78}, 063828 (2008)]. However, the demonstration was based on a measurement scheme which was yet to be implemented in experiments. In this work, we quantitatively illustrate the advantage of PEFSs over NOON states in the presence of photon losses by analytically calculating the quantum Fisher information. To realize such an advantage in practice, we then investigate the achievable sensitivities by employing three types of …
Quantum Fisher information is a central quantity in quantum metrology. We discuss an alternative representation of quantum Fisher information for unitary parametrization processes. The highlight of this representation is that all information of parametrization transformation, i.e., the entire dynamical information, is totally involved in a Hermitian operator H. Utilizing this representation, quantum Fisher information is only determined by H and the initial state. We apply this representation in a collective spin system and show the specific expression of H. For a simple case, a spin-half syst…
We introduce a positive Hermitian operator, the Fisher operator, and use it to examine a measurement process incorporating unitary dynamics and complete measurements. We develop the idea of information complement, the minimization of which establishes the optimal precision for a fixed input. The formalism demonstrates that, in general, the classical Fisher Information has the Hamiltonian semi-norm as an upper bound. This is achievable with a qubit probe and only projective measurements, and is independent of the true value of the estimated parameter. In an interferometry context, we show that …
Multiphoton heralding generates large-amplitude squeezed Schrödinger cat states and parity-selective Fock superpositions from squeezed vacuum via an OPA
We show that when a suitable entanglement generating unitary operator depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, and an appropriate observable is measured, a precision of order 2 raised to the power (-N) in estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the precision achievable in classical and in quantum non-entangling parallel strategies. We propose a quantum-optics model of laser light interacting with an N-qubit system, say a polyatomic molecule, via a generalized Jaynes-Cummings interaction which, in principle, could achieve the exponentially enhan…
We study the sensitivity of phase estimation in a lossy Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) using two general, and practical, resources generated by a laser and a nonlinear optical medium with passive optimal elements, which are readily available in the laboratory: One is a two-mode separable coherent and squeezed vacuum state at a beam splitter and the other is a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. In view of the ultimate precision given by quantum Fisher information, we show that the two-mode squeezed vacuum state can achieve a lower bound of estimation error than the coherent and squeezed vacuum …
Quantum error correction has recently emerged as a tool to enhance quantum sensing under Markovian noise. It works by correcting errors in a sensor while letting a signal imprint on the logical state. This approach typically requires a specialized error-correcting code, as most existing codes correct away both the dominant errors and the signal. To date, however, few such specialized codes are known, among which most require noiseless, controllable ancillas. We show here that such ancillas are not needed when the signal Hamiltonian and the error operators commute; a common limiting type of dec…
We introduce general bounds for the parameter estimation error in nonlinear quantum metrology of many-body open systems in the Markovian limit. Given a $k$-body Hamiltonian and $p$-body Lindblad operators, the estimation error of a Hamitonian parameter using a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state as a probe is shown to scale as $N^{-\left(k-\frac{p}{2}\right)}$, surpassing the shot-noise limit for $2k>p+1$. Metrology equivalence between initial product states and maximally entangled states is established for $p\geq 1$. We further show that one can estimate the system-environment coupling pa…
The parity operator $\cal P$ and time reversal operator $\cal T$ are two important operators in the quantum theory, in particular, in the $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum theory. By using the concrete forms of $\cal P$ and $\cal T$, we discuss their geometrical properties in two dimensional spaces. It is showed that if $\cal T$ is given, then all $\cal P$ links with the quadric surfaces; if $\cal P$ is given, then all $\cal T$ links with the quadric curves. Moreover, we give out the generalized unbroken $\cal PT$-symmetric condition of an operator. The unbroken $\cal PT$-symmetry of a Hermitian ope…
The maximally entangled states are excellent candidates for achieving Heisenberg-limited measurements in ideal quantum metrology, however, they are fragile against dissipation such as particle losses and their achievable precisions may become even worse than the standard quantum limit (SQL). Here we present a robust high-precision measurement scheme via spin cat states (a kind of non-Gaussian entangled states in superposition of two spin coherent states) in the presence of particle losses. The input spin cat states are of excellent robustness against particle losses and their achievable precis…
We analyse the problem of estimating a scalar parameter $g$ that controls the Hamiltonian of a quantum system subject to Markovian noise. Specifically, we place bounds on the growth rate of the quantum Fisher information with respect to $g$, in terms of the Lindblad operators and the $g$-derivative of the Hamiltonian $H$. Our new bounds are not only more generally applicable than those in the literature -- for example, they apply to systems with time-dependent Hamiltonians and/or Lindblad operators, and to infinite-dimensional systems such as oscillators -- but are also tighter in the settings…
Quantum multi--photon spin--boson model is considered. We solve an operator Riccati equation associated with that model and present a candidate for a generalized parity operator allowing to transform spin--boson Hamiltonian to a block diagonal form what indicates an existence of the related symmetry of the model.
Quantum fidelity is a measure to quantify the closeness of two quantum states. In an operational sense, it is defined as the minimal overlap between the probability distributions of measurement outcomes and the minimum is taken over all possible positive-operator valued measures (POVMs). Quantum fidelity has been investigated in various scientific fields, but the identification of associated optimal measurements has often been overlooked despite its great importance for practical purposes. We find here the optimal POVMs for quantum fidelity between multi-mode Gaussian states in a closed analyt…
The central issue in quantum parameter estimation is to find out the optimal measurement setup that leads to the ultimate lower bound of an estimation error. We address here a question of whether a Gaussian measurement scheme can achieve the ultimate bound for phase estimation in single-mode Gaussian metrology that exploits single-mode Gaussian probe states in a Gaussian environment. We identify three types of optimal Gaussian measurement setups yielding the maximal Fisher information depending on displacement, squeezing, and thermalization of the probe state. We show that the homodyne measure…
We consider a general model of unitary parameter estimation in presence of Markovian noise, where the parameter to be estimated is associated with the Hamiltonian part of the dynamics. In absence of noise, unitary parameter can be estimated with precision scaling as $1/T$, where $T$ is the total probing time. We provide a simple algebraic condition involving solely the operators appearing in the quantum Master equation, implying at most $1/\sqrt{T}$ scaling of precision under the most general adaptive quantum estimation strategies. We also discuss the requirements a quantum error-correction li…
The founding fathers of the quantum theory already struggled with the different roles of space and time in quantum theory. Position is by default represented by an operator, whereas time is usually treated as a parameter. Time operator models exist, in particular a certain Time Operator model denoted the Temporal Wave Function (T.W.F.). This one extends the Born's rule to the time domain. The statistics of pure exponential decay does not allow to exclude this Born rule for time. However the tiny violation of the combined discrete symmetries $P$ (parity) and $C$ (charge conjugation) observed in…
Using exponential quadratic operators, we present a general framework for studying the exact dynamics of system-bath interaction in which the Hamiltonian is described by the quadratic form of bosonic operators. To demonstrate the versatility of the approach, we study how the environment affects the squeezing of quadrature components of the system. We further propose that the squeezing can be enhanced when parity kicks are applied to the system.
Zitterbewegung (ZB), the trembling of free relativistic electrons in a vacuum could be simulated by a single trapped ion. We focus on the variations of ZB under different parity conditions and find no ZB in the case of odd or even parity. ZB occurs only for admixture of the odd and even parity states. We also show the similar role played by the parity operator for the trapped ion in Fock-state representation and the space inversion operator for a realistic relativistic electron. Although the ZB effect is invisible in a relativistic electron, preparation of the trapped ion in different parity s…
We show that continuous quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble is able to improve the precision of frequency estimation even in the presence of independent dephasing acting on each atom. We numerically simulate the dynamics of an ensemble with up to N = 150 atoms initially prepared in a (classical) spin coherent state, and we show that, thanks to the spin squeezing dynamically generated by the measurement, the information obtainable from the continuous photocurrent scales superclassically with respect to the number of atoms N. We provide evidence that such superclassical…
A parity-dependent squeezing operator is introduced which imposes different SU(1,1) rotations on the even and odd subspaces of the harmonic oscillator Hilbert space. This operator is used to define parity-dependent squeezed states which exhibit highly nonclassical properties such as strong antibunching, quadrature squeezing, strong oscillations in the photon-number distribution, etc. In contrast to the usual squeezed states whose $Q$ and Wigner functions are simply Gaussians, the parity-dependent squeezed states have much more complicated $Q$ and Wigner functions that exhibit an interesting in…
Notwithstanding radical conceptual differences between classical and quantum mechanics, it is usually assumed that physical measurements concern observables common to both theories . Not so with the eigenvalues ($\pm 1$) of the parity operator. The effect of such a measurement on a mixture of even and odd states of the harmonic oscillator is akin to separating at a single stroke a pair of shuffled card decks: the result is a set of definite parity, though otherwise mixed. The Wigner function should be a sensitive probe for this phenomenon, for it can be interpreted as the expectation value of …

Identification of the optimal quantum metrological protocols in realistic many particle quantum models is in general a challenge that cannot be efficiently addressed by the state-of-the-art numerical and analytical methods. Here we provide a comprehensive framework exploiting matrix product operators (MPO) type tensor networks for quantum metrological problems. Thanks to the fact that the MPO formalism allows for an efficient description of short-range spatial and temporal noise correlations, the maximal achievable estimation precision in such models, as well as the optimal probe states in pre…
We show that the Fano operator for one dimensional quantum system is uniquely determined by assuming the reasonable behavior under translation and parity transformation on phase space. Contrarily, for the system with lattice phase space the same procedure does not work.
