Spin measurements of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) provide crucial constraints on the accretion processes that power active galactic nuclei (AGN), fuel outflows, and trigger black hole growth. However, spin measurements are mainly limited to a few dozen nearby sources for which high quality, high S/N spectra (e.g., from Chandra, XMM-Newton, Suzaku, NuSTAR) are available. Here we measure the average SMBH spin of $\sim$1900 AGN in the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy survey using spectral stacking analysis. We find broad Fe K$α$ line emission in the average COSMOS spectrum (Gaussian width $σ=0.27\pm0.05$ keV), and by fitting this emission line profile with relativistic line models, we measure the average black hole spin parameter $a=0.62~\substack{+0.07 \\ -0.17}$. The sample size, availability of multiwavelength data, and spatial resolution of the COSMOS Legacy field also provide a unique environment to investigate the average SMBH spin as a function of other observables (e.g., redshift, luminosity) up to $z\sim5.3$. We find that optically classified Type 1 sources have broader Fe K$α$ line emission than Type 2 sources. X-ray unobscured and obscured sources, as defined by their column densities, have widths that are consistent with the optically defined unobscured and obscured sources, respectively. There is some evidence for evolution of the Fe K$α$ width and black hole spin parameter with luminosity, but not conclusively with redshift. The results of this work provide insights into the average spins of SMBHs in AGN, shedding light on their growth mechanisms and observed co-evolution with their host galaxies.
Dual quasars are precursors of binary supermassive black holes, which are important objects for gravitational wave study, galaxy evolution, and cosmology. I report four double quasars, one of which is newly discovered, with separations of 1$-$2 arcsec selected from the DECam Legacy Survey. The Gemini optical spectra confirm that both sources are quasars at the same redshifts. J0118$-$0104 and J0932+0722 are classified as dual quasars, whereas J0037+2058 could be either a dual quasar or a lensed quasar. I estimate the physical properties such as black hole masses and Eddington ratios for the fo…
The COSMOS-Legacy survey is a 4.6 Ms Chandra program that has imaged 2.2 deg$^2$ of the COSMOS field with an effective exposure of $\simeq$160 ks over the central 1.5 deg$^2$ and of $\simeq$80 ks in the remaining area. The survey is the combination of 56 new observations, obtained as an X-ray Visionary Project, with the previous C-COSMOS survey. We describe the reduction and analysis of the new observations and the properties of 2273 point sources detected above a spurious probability of 2$\times 10^{-5}$. We also present the updated properties of the C-COSMOS sources detected in the new data.…
We investigate the star formation properties of a large sample of ~2300 X-ray-selected Type 2 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) host galaxies out to z~3 in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy Survey in order to understand the connection between the star formation and nuclear activity. Making use of the existing multi-wavelength photometric data available in the COSMOS field, we perform a multi-component modeling from far-infrared to near-ultraviolet using a nuclear dust torus model, a stellar population model and a starburst model of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Through detailed analysis of SED…
Using {\em Chandra} observations in the 2.15 deg$^{2}$ COSMOS legacy field, we present one of the most accurate measurements of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) spectrum to date in the [0.3-7] keV energy band. The CXB has three distinct components: contributions from two Galactic collisional thermal plasmas at kT$\sim$0.27 and 0.07 keV and an extragalactic power-law with photon spectral index $Γ$=1.45$\pm{0.02}$. The 1 keV normalization of the extragalactic component is 10.91$\pm{0.16}$ keV cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ keV$^{-1}$. Removing all X-ray detected sources, the remaining unresolved …
We present here self-consistent zoom-in simulations of massive galaxies forming in a full cosmological setting. The simulations are run with an updated version of the KETJU code, which is able to resolve the gravitational dynamics of their supermassive black holes, while simultaneously modelling the large-scale astrophysical processes in the surrounding galaxies, such as gas cooling, star formation and stellar and AGN feedback. The KETJU code is able to accurately model the complex behaviour of multiple SMBHs, including dynamical friction, stellar scattering and gravitational wave emission, an…
We present a demographic analysis of the physical and morphological properties of $450/850~μ\rm m$-selected galaxies from the deep observations of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey in the Extended Groth Strip that are detected below the classical submillimeter-galaxy regime ($S_{850 μ\rm m}\lesssim 6~\rm mJy$/beam) and compare them with a sample of optically-selected star-forming galaxies detected in the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey in the same field. We derive the evolution of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, finding a steeper specific star forma…
Feedback processes from active galactic nuclei (AGN) are thought to play a crucial role in regulating star formation in massive galaxies. Previous studies using \textit{Herschel} have resulted in conflicting conclusions as to whether star formation is quenched, enhanced, or not affected by AGN feedback. We use new deep 850 $μ$m observations from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy survey (S2CLS) to investigate star formation in a sample of X-ray selected AGN, probing galaxies up to $L_{0.5-7~\rm keV} = 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Here we present the results of our analysis on a sample of 1957 galaxies at …
We investigate the multi-wavelength properties of host galaxies of 3701 X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to z~5 in the Chandra-COSMOS Legacy Survey. Thanks to the extensive multi-wavelength photometry available in the COSMOS field, we derive AGN luminosities, host stellar masses, and star formation rates (SFRs) via a multi-component SED fitting technique. Type 1 and Type 2 AGNs follow the same intrinsic Lx-L6um relation, suggesting that mid-infrared emission is a reasonably good measure of the AGN accretion power regardless of obscuration. We find that there is a strong increas…
We study the source-subtracted near-infrared and X-ray background fluctuations of the COSMOS field using data from the Spitzer SPLASH program ($\sim$1272 hours) and Chandra COSMOS Legacy Survey (4.6 Ms). The new auto power spectra of the cosmic infrared and X-ray background fluctuations reach maximum angular scales of $\sim$ 3000$''$ and $\sim$ 5000$''$, respectively. We measure the cross power spectra between each infrared and X-ray band and calculate the mean power above 20$''$. We find that the soft X-ray band is correlated with 3.6 and 4.5$μ$m at $\sim$ 4 $σ$ significance level. The signif…
We present the measurement of the projected and redshift space 2-point correlation function (2pcf) of the new catalog of Chandra COSMOS-Legacy AGN at 2.9$\leq$z$\leq$5.5 ($\langle L_{bol} \rangle \sim$10$^{46}$ erg/s) using the generalized clustering estimator based on phot-z probability distribution functions (Pdfs) in addition to any available spec-z. We model the projected 2pcf estimated using $π_{max}$ = 200 h$^{-1}$ Mpc with the 2-halo term and we derive a bias at z$\sim$3.4 equal to b = 6.6$^{+0.60}_{-0.55}$, which corresponds to a typical mass of the hosting halos of log M$_h$ = 12.83$^…
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are ubiquitous in galaxies with a sizable mass. It is expected that a pair of SMBHs originally in the nuclei of two merging galaxies would form a binary and eventually coalesce via a burst of gravitational waves. So far theoretical models and simulations have been unable to predict directly the SMBH merger timescale from ab-initio galaxy formation theory, focusing only on limited phases of the orbital decay of SMBHs under idealized conditions of the galaxy hosts. The predicted SMBH merger timescales are long, of order Gyrs, which could be problematic for future…
We present the catalog of optical and infrared counterparts of the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy Survey, a 4.6 Ms Chandra program on the 2.2 square degrees of the COSMOS field, combination of 56 new overlapping observations obtained in Cycle 14 with the previous C-COSMOS survey. In this Paper we report the i, K, and 3.6 micron identifications of the 2273 X-ray point sources detected in the new Cycle 14 observations. We use the likelihood ratio technique to derive the association of optical/infrared (IR) counterparts for 97% of the X-ray sources. We also update the information for the 1743 sources dete…
We present the X-ray spectral analysis of the 1855 extragalactic sources in the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy survey catalog having more than 30 net counts in the 0.5-7 keV band. 38% of the sources are optically classified Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN), 60% are Type 2 AGN and 2% are passive, low-redshift galaxies. We study the distribution of AGN photon index and of the intrinsic absorption N(H,z) based on the sources optical classification: Type 1 have a slightly steeper mean photon index than Type 2 AGN, which on the other hand have average intrinsic absorption ~3 times higher than Type 1 AGN.…
Aims. We perform clustering measurements of 800 X-ray selected Chandra COSMOS Legacy (CCL) Type 2 AGN with known spectroscopic redshift to probe the halo mass dependence on AGN host galaxy properties, such as galaxy stellar mass Mstar, star formation rate (SFR) and specific black hole accretion rate (BHAR), in the redshift range z = [0 - 3]. Methods. We split the sample of AGN with known spectroscopic redshits according to Mstar, SFR and specific BHAR, while matching the distributions in terms of the other parameters, including redshift. We measure the projected two-point correlation function …
Sub-milllimetre galaxies (SMGs) are some of the most luminous star-forming galaxies in the Universe, however their properties remain hard to determine due to the difficulty of identifying their optical\slash near-infrared counterparts. One of the key steps to determining the nature of SMGs is measuring a redshift distribution representative of the whole population. We do this by applying statistical techniques to a sample of 761 850$μ$m sources from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey observations of the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDS) Field. We detect excess galaxies around $> 98.4$ per cent o…
The Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) is an ongoing high-completeness, deep spectroscopic survey of $\sim$60,000 galaxies to Y$<$21.2 mag, over $\sim$6 deg2 in three well-studied deep extragalactic fields: D10 (COSMOS), D02 (XMM-LSS) and D03 (ECDFS). Numerous DEVILS projects all require consistent, uniformly-derived and state-of-the-art photometric data with which to measure galaxy properties. Existing photometric catalogues in these regions either use varied photometric measurement techniques for different facilities/wavelengths leading to inconsistencies, older imaging data a…
The existence of a large population of Compton thick (CT, $N_{H}>10^{24} cm^{-2}$) AGN is a key ingredient of most Cosmic X-ray background synthesis models. However, direct identification of these sources, especially at high redshift, is difficult due to the flux suppression and complex spectral shape produced by CT obscuration. We explored the Chandra COSMOS Legacy point source catalog, comprising 1855 sources, to select via X-ray spectroscopy, a large sample of CT candidates at high redshift. Adopting a physical model to reproduce the toroidal absorber, and a Monte-Carlo sampling method, we …
We investigate the properties of the galaxies selected from the deepest 850-micron survey undertaken to date with SCUBA-2 on the JCMT. This deep 850-micron imaging was taken in parallel with deep 450-micron imaging in the very best observing conditions as part of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. A total of 106 sources were uncovered at 850 microns from ~150, sq. arcmin in the centre of the COSMOS/UltraVISTA/CANDELS field, imaged to a typical rms depth of ~0.25 mJy. We utilise the wealth of available deep multi-frequency data to establish the complete redshift distribution for this sample, …
We present catalogues of stellar masses, star formation rates, and ancillary stellar population parameters for galaxies spanning $0<z<9$ from the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS). DEVILS is a deep spectroscopic redshift survey with very high completeness, covering several premier deep fields including COSMOS (D10). Our stellar mass and star formation rate estimates are self-consistently derived using the spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling code ProSpect, using well-motivated parameterisations for dust attenuation, star formation histories, and metallicity evolution. W…
Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are among the most luminous dusty galaxies in the Universe, but their true nature remains unclear; are SMGs the progenitors of the massive elliptical galaxies we see in the local Universe, or are they just a short-lived phase among more typical star-forming galaxies? To explore this problem further, we investigate the clustering of SMGs identified in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We use a catalogue of submillimetre ($850μ$m) source identifications derived using a combination of radio counterparts and colour/IR selection to analyse a sample of 914 SMGs in th…
Accretion of matter onto central Black Holes (BHs) in galaxies liberates enormous amounts of feedback energy, which influence the formation and evolution of structures, affecting the environment from pc to Mpc scales. These BHs are usually Supermassive BHs (SMBHs: mass $\geq 10^6 M_{\odot}$) existing at the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are widely observed through their multi-wavelength emission at all cosmic epochs. The SMBH energy output is often observed as powerful AGN outflows in a wide variety of forms. Relatively recently, Intermediate-Mass BHs (IMBHs: mass = $100 - 10^…
We present a sample of 40 AGN in dwarf galaxies at redshifts $z \lesssim$ 2.4. The galaxies are drawn from the \textit{Chandra} COSMOS-Legacy survey as having stellar masses $10^{7}\leq M_{*}\leq3 \times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$. Most of the dwarf galaxies are star-forming. After removing the contribution from star formation to the X-ray emission, the AGN luminosities of the 40 dwarf galaxies are in the range $L_\mathrm{0.5-10 keV} \sim10^{39} - 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. With 12 sources at $z > 0.5$, our sample constitutes the highest-redshift discovery of AGN in dwarf galaxies. The record-holder is c…
Here, we present a catalog of blended spectra in Data Release 1 of the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Of the 23197 spectra, 181 showed signs of a blend of redshifts and spectral templates. We examine these blends in detail for signs of either a candidate strong lensing galaxy or a useful overlapping galaxy pair. One of the three DEVILS target fields, COSMOS (D10) is close to complete and it is fully imaged with Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS) and we visually examine the 57 blended spectra in this field in …

We model here the merger histories of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) population in the late stages of a cosmological simulation of a $\sim 2 \times 10^{13} M_\odot$ galaxy group. The gravitational dynamics around the several tens of SMBHs ($M_{\bullet} \gtrsim 7.5\times 10^7 M_\odot$) hosted by the galaxies in the group is computed at high accuracy using regularized integration with the KETJU code. The 11 SMBHs which form binaries and hierarchical triplets eventually merge after hardening through dynamical friction, stellar scattering, and gravitational wave (GW) emission. The binaries for…
We study the evolution of baryonic gas in cosmologically growing dark matter halos. To accurately model both the inner and outer regions of the halos, we use a dark matter density profile that transitions smoothly from the NFW profile within the virial radius to a more realistic flat profile far beyond the halo. We construct a dark matter gravitational potential consistent with this density profile, and we use a "cosmological" potential that accounts for gas evolution consistent with Hubble expansion at large radii. Gas is initialized with a density $\approx$ 0.2 times the dark matter density,…
We present the largest high-redshift (3<z<6.85) sample of X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) on a contiguous field, using sources detected in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey. The sample contains 174 sources, 87 with spectroscopic redshift, the other 87 with photometric redshift (z_phot). In this work we treat z_phot as a probability weighted sum of contributions, adding to our sample the contribution of sources with z_phot<3 but z_phot probability distribution >0 at z>3. We compute the number counts in the observed 0.5-2 keV band, finding a decline in the number of sources at z>3 and…
We build on the evidence provided by our Legacy Survey of Galactic globular clusters (GC) to submit to a crucial test four scenarios currently entertained for the formation of multiple stellar generations in GCs. The observational constraints on multiple generations to be fulfilled are manifold, including GC specificity, ubiquity, variety, predominance, discreteness, supernova avoidance, p-capture processing, helium enrichment and mass budget. We argue that scenarios appealing to supermassive stars, fast rotating massive stars and massive interactive binaries violate in an irreparable fashion …
We study the radio properties of 706 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) selected at 870$μ$m with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey map of the Ultra Deep Survey field. We detect 273 SMGs at $>4σ$ in deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array 1.4 GHz observations, of which a subset of 45 SMGs are additionally detected in 610 MHz Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope imaging. We quantify the far-infrared/radio correlation through parameter $q_\text{IR}$, defined as the logarithmic ratio of the far-infrared and radio luminosity, and include the radio-undetected SMGs thro…
We have used the Submillimeter Array at 860$\,μ$m to observe the brightest SCUBA-2 sources in 4$\,$deg$^{2}$ of the Cosmology Legacy Survey. We have targeted 75 of the brightest single-dish SCUBA-2 850$\,μ$m sources down to $S_{850}\,{\approx}\,8\,$mJy, achieving an average synthesized beam of 2.4$^{\prime\prime}$ and an average rms of $σ_{860}\,{=}\,1.5\,$mJy in our primary beam-corrected maps. We searched our maps for $4σ$ peaks, corresponding to $S_{860}\,{\gtrsim}\,6\,$mJy sources, and detected 59 single galaxies and three pairs of galaxies. We include in our study 28 archival observations…
We present here a self-consistent cosmological zoom-in simulation of a triple supermassive black hole (SMBH) system forming in a complex multiple galaxy merger. The simulation is run with an updated version of our code KETJU, which is able to follow the motion of SMBHs down to separations of tens of Schwarzschild radii while simultaneously modeling the large-scale astrophysical processes in the surrounding galaxies, such as gas cooling, star formation, and stellar and AGN feedback. Our simulation produces initially a SMBH binary system for which the hardening process is interrupted by the late…
(Abridged) We present a method that tracks the growth of supermassive black holes (BHs) and the feedback from AGN in cosmological simulations. Our model is a substantially modified version of the one by Springel et al. (2005). Because cosmological simulations lack both the resolution and the physics to model the multiphase interstellar medium, they tend to strongly underestimate the Bondi-Hoyle accretion rate. To allow low-mass BHs to grow, it is therefore necessary to increase the predicted Bondi-Hoyle rates in dense gas by large, ad-hoc factors. We explore the physical regimes where the use …
We study the early stage of the formation of seed supermassive black holes via direct collapse in dark matter (DM) halos, in the cosmological context. We perform high-resolution zoom-in simulations of such collapse at high-$z$. Using the adaptive mesh refinement code ENZO, we resolve the formation and growth of a DM halo, until its virial temperature reaches $\sim 10^4$K, atomic cooling turns on, and collapse ensues. We demonstrate that direct collapse proceeds in two stages, although they are not well separated. The first stage is triggered by the onset of atomic cooling, and leads to rapidly…
We present the catalogue and properties of sources in AS2UDS, an 870-$μ$m continuum survey with the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) of 716 single-dish sub-millimetre sources detected in the UKIDSS/UDS field by the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. In our sensitive ALMA follow-up observations we detect 708 sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) at $>$\,4.3$σ$ significance across the $\sim$\,1-degree diameter field. We combine our precise ALMA positions with the extensive multi-wavelength coverage in the UDS field to fit the spectral energy distributions of our SMGs to derive a media…
We have modeled direct collapse of a primordial gas within dark matter halos in the presence of radiative transfer, in high-resolution zoom-in simulations in a cosmological framework, down to the formation of the photosphere and the central object. Radiative transfer has been implemented in the flux-limited diffusion (FLD) approximation. Adiabatic models were run for comparison. We find that (a) the FLD flow forms an irregular central structure and does not exhibit fragmentation, contrary to adiabatic flow which forms a thick disk, driving a pair of spiral shocks, subject to Kelvin-Helmholtz s…
We report the first results of AS2UDS: an 870 $μ$m continuum survey with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) of a total area of $\sim$ 50 arcmin$^2$ comprising a complete sample of 716 submillimeter sources drawn from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) map of the UKIDSS/UDS field. The S2CLS parent sample covers a 0.96 degree$^2$ field at $σ_{850}=0.90\pm0.05$ mJy beam$^{-1}$. Our deep, high-resolution ALMA observations with $σ_{\rm 870}\sim$ 0.25 mJy and a 0.15"--0.30" FWHM synthesized beam, provide precise locations for 695 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) responsibl…

The growth of supermassive black holes (BHs) located at the centers of their host galaxies comes mainly from accretion of gas, but how to fuel them remains an outstanding unsolved problem in quasar evolution. This issue can be elucidated by quantifying the radiative efficiency parameter ($η$) as a function of redshift, which also provides constraints on the average spin of the BHs and its possible evolution with time. We derive a formalism to link $η$ with the luminosity density, BH mass density, and duty cycle of quasars, quantities we can estimate from existing quasar and galaxy survey data.…
We study the 850um emission in X-ray selected AGN in the 2 sq-deg COSMOS field using new data from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We find 19 850um bright X-ray AGN in a high-sensitivity region covering 0.89 sq-deg with flux densities of S850=4-10 mJy. The 19 AGN span the full range in redshift and hard X-ray luminosity covered by the sample - 0.7<z<3.5 and 43.2<log10(LX) <45. We report a highly significant stacked 850um detection of a hard X-ray flux-limited population of 699 z>1 X-ray AGN - S850=0.71+/-0.08mJy. We explore trends in the stacked 850um flux densities with redshift, finding…
We present deep observations at 450 um and 850 um in the Extended Groth Strip field taken with the SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the deep SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS), achieving a central instrumental depth of $σ_{450}=1.2$ mJy/beam and $σ_{850}=0.2$ mJy/beam. We detect 57 sources at 450 um and 90 at 850 um with S/N > 3.5 over ~70 sq. arcmin. From these detections we derive the number counts at flux densities $S_{450}>4.0$ mJy and $S_{850}>0.9$ mJy, which represent the deepest number counts at these wavelengths derived using directly extracte…
Feedback from accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is thought to be a primary driver of quenching in massive galaxies, but the best way to implement SMBH physics into galaxy formation simulations remains ambiguous. As part of the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project, we explore the effects of different modeling choices for SMBH accretion and feedback in a suite of $\sim500$ cosmological zoom-in simulations across a wide range of halo mass (10^10-10^13 Msun). Within the suite, we vary the numerical schemes for BH accretion and feedback, the accretion efficiency, and the stren…
We present a self-consistent prediction from a large-scale cosmological simulation for the population of `wandering' supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of mass greater than $10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ on long-lived, kpc-scale orbits within Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies. We extract a sample of MW-mass halos from the Romulus25 cosmological simulation (Tremmel et al. 2017), which is uniquely able to capture the orbital evolution of SMBHs during and following galaxy mergers. We predict that such halos, regardless of recent merger history or morphology, host an average of $5.1 \pm 3.3$ SMBHs, including their c…
We provide detailed comparison between the AMR code Enzo-2.4 and the SPH/N- body code GADGET-3 in the context of isolated or cosmological direct baryonic collapse within dark matter (DM) halos to form supermassive black holes. Gas flow is examined by following evolution of basic parameters of accretion flows. Both codes show an overall agreement in the general features of the collapse, however, many subtle differences exist. For isolated models, the codes increase their spatial and mass resolutions at different pace, which leads to substantially earlier collapse in SPH than in AMR cases due to…

We present high-resolution 870-um ALMA continuum maps of 30 bright sub-millimeter sources in the UKIDSS UDS field. These sources are selected from deep, 1-square degrees 850-um maps from the SCUBA--2 Cosmology Legacy Survey, and are representative of the brightest sources in the field (median SCUBA2 flux S_850=8.7+/-0.4 mJy). We detect 52 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) at >4-sigma significance in our 30 ALMA maps. In 61+/-17% of the ALMA maps the single-dish source comprises a blend of >=2 SMGs, where the secondary SMGs are Ultra--Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with L_IR>10^12 Lo. The bri…
It is well established that the properties of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies are correlated through scaling relations. While hydrodynamical cosmological simulations have begun to account for the co-evolution of BHs and galaxies, they typically have neglected the BH spin, even though it may play an important role in modulating the growth and feedback of BHs. Here we introduce a new sub-grid model for the BH spin evolution in the moving-mesh code {\small AREPO} in order to improve the physical faithfulness of the BH modelling in galaxy formation simulations. We account for seve…
We present an analysis of the spatial clustering of a large sample of high-resolution, interferometically identified, submillimetre galaxies (SMGs). We measure the projected cross-correlation function of ~350 SMGs in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep-Survey Field across a redshift range of $z=1.5-3$ utilising a method that incorporates the uncertainties in the redshift measurements for both the SMGs and cross-correlated galaxies through sampling their full probability distribution functions. By measuring the absolute linear bias of the SMGs we derive halo masses of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm halo}[{h^{-1}\,\rm M_{…
Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are an inevitable consequence of galaxy mergers. At subparsec separations, they are practically impossible to resolve, and the most promising technique is to search for quasars with periodic variability. However, searches for quasar periodicity in time-domain data are challenging due to the stochastic variability of quasars. In this paper, we used Bayesian methods to disentangle periodic SMBHB signals from intrinsic damped random walk (DRW) variability in active galactic nuclei light curves. We simulated a wide variety of realistic DRW and DRW+sine lig…
