Binary post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars have orbital periods in the range of 100--2500 days in eccentric orbits. They are surrounded by circumbinary dusty discs. They are the immediate result of unconstrained binary interaction processes. Their observed orbital properties do not correspond to model predictions: Neither the periods nor the high eccentricities are expected. Our goal is to investigate if interactions between a binary and its circumbinary disc during the post-AGB phase can result in their eccentric orbits, while simultaneously explaining the chemical anomaly known as depletion. For this paper, we selected three binaries (EP Lyr, RU Cen, HD 46703) with well-constrained orbits, luminosities, and chemical abundances. We used the MESA code to evolve post-AGB models, while including the accretion of metal-poor gas. This allows us to constrain the evolution of the stars and study the impact of circumbinary discs on the orbital properties of the models. We investigate the effect of torques produced by gas inside the binary cavity and the effect of Lindblad resonances on the orbit, while also including the tidal interaction following the equilibrium tide model. We find that none of our models are able to explain the high orbital eccentricities of the binaries in our sample. The accretion torque does not significantly impact the binary orbit, while Lindblad resonances can pump the eccentricity up to only $e \approx 0.2$. At higher eccentricities, the tidal interaction becomes too strong, so the high observed eccentricities cannot be reproduced. However, even if we assume tides to be ineffective, the eccentricities in our models do not exceed $\approx 0.25$. We conclude that either our knowledge of disc-binary interactions is still incomplete, or the binaries must have left their phase of strong interaction in an eccentric orbit.
During the last years, many observational studies have revealed that binaries play an active role in the shaping of non spherical planetary nebulae. We review the different works that lead to the direct or indirect evidence for the presence of binary companions during the Asymptotic Giant Branch, proto-Planetary Nebula and Planetary Nebula phases. We also discuss how these binaries can influence the stellar evolution and possible future directions in the field.
We focus here on one particular and poorly studied object, IRAS11472-0800. It is a highly evolved post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) star of spectral type F, with a large infrared excess produced by thermal emission of circumstellar dust. We deploy a multi-wavelength study which includes the analyses of optical and IR spectra as well as a variability study based on photometric and spectroscopic time-series. The spectral energy distribution (SED) properties as well as the highly processed silicate N-band emission show that the dust in IRAS11472-0800 is likely trapped in a stable disc. The …
We report on our search for spectroscopic binaries among a sample of AGB stars. Observations were carried out in the framework of the monitoring of radial velocities of (candidate) binary stars performed at the Mercator 1.2m telescope, using the HERMES spectrograph. We found evidence for duplicity in UV Cam, TU Tau, BL Ori, VZ Per, T Dra, and V Hya. This short communication focus on V Hya, found to behave like RV Tau of the b subtype, which are binaries surrounded by a disc.
Post-AGB stars are the final stage of evolution of low-intermediate mass stars (M<8 Solar Masses). Those in binary systems have stable circumbinary discs. Using data from Herschel (PACS/SPIRE), we extend the SEDs of 50 galactic post-AGB binary systems to sub-millimetre wavelengths and use the slope of the SED as a diagnostic tool to probe the presence of large grains. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code (MCMax), we create a large grid of models to quantify the observed spectral indices and use the presence of large grains in the disc as a proxy for evolution.
Binaries with circumbinary disks are commonly found among optically bright post-AGB stars. Although clearly linked to binary interaction processes, the formation, evolution and fate of these disks are still badly understood. Due to their compactness, interferometric techniques are required to resolve them. Here, we discuss our high-quality multiwavelength interferometric data of two prototypical yet very different post-AGB binaries, AC and 89 Herculis, as well as the modeling thereof with radiative transfer models. A detailed account of the data and models of both objects is published in three…
Roughly 30% of variable AGB stars show a Long Secondary Period, or LSP. These LSPs have posed something of a problem in recent years and their cause remains a mystery. By combining VLT-derived velocity curves with MACHO and OGLE light curves we were able to examine many properties of these stars and test the theory that LSPs are caused by binarity. We show why we concluded that the binary model for LSPs is unlikely. Examining mid-infrared SAGE observations for stars with LSPs shows that these stars are surrounded by a significant amount of cool dust in a nonspherical distribution, e.g. a disk …
Many disc-type post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars are chemically peculiar, showing underabundances of refractory elements in their photospheres that correlate with condensation temperature. The aim of this paper is to investigate how accretion from a circumbinary disc can cause this phenomenon of depletion and how this impacts the evolution of post-AGB stars. We used the \texttt{MESA} code to evolve stars in the post-AGB phase, while including accretion of metal-poor gas. We compared the models to a sample of 58 observed disc-type post-AGB stars with chemical abundance data. For eac…
We performed a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of two RV Tauri stars GK Car and GZ Nor. Both objects are surrounded by hot circumstellar dust. Their pulsation periods, derived from ASAS photometric time series, have been used to derive their luminosities and distances via the PLC relation. In addition, for both objects, GAIA distances are available. The Gaia distances and luminosities are consistent with the values obtained from the PLC relationship. GK Car is at distance of 4.5$\pm{1.3}$ kpc and has a luminosity of 1520$\pm{840}$ L$_{\odot}$, while GZ Nor is at distance of 8.4$\pm{2.3}…
This paper is the third one in a series devoted to studying the properties of binaries involving M giants. We use a new set of orbits to construct the first (e-logP) diagram of an extensive sample of M giant binaries, to obtain their mass-function distribution, and to derive evolutionary constraints for this class of binaries and related systems. The orbital properties of binaries involving M giants were analysed and compared with those of related families of binaries (K giants, post-AGB stars, barium stars, Tc-poor S stars). The orbital elements of post-AGB stars and M giants are not differen…
Post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars with discs are all binaries. Many of these binaries have orbital periods between 100 and 1000 days so cannot have avoided mass transfer between the AGB star and its companion, likely through a common-envelope type interaction. We report on preliminary results of our project to model circumbinary discs around post-AGB stars using our binary population synthesis code binary_c. We combine a simple analytic thin-disc model with binary stellar evolution to estimate the impact of the disc on the binary, and vice versa, fast enough that we can model stell…
We aim at describing and understanding binary interaction processes in systems with very evolved companions. Here, we focus on understanding the origin and determining the properties of the high-velocity outflow observed in one such system. We present a quantitative analysis of BD+46$^{\circ}$442, a post-AGB binary which shows active mass transfer that leads to the creation of a disk-driven outflow or jet. We obtained high-resolution optical spectra from the HERMES spectrograph, mounted on the 1.2m Flemish Mercator Telescope. By performing a time-series analysis of the Halpha profile, we disse…
We have derived elemental abundances for a sample of nine IRAS sources with colours similar to those of post-AGB stars. For IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208-2035, IRAS 04535+3747 and IRAS 08187-1905 this is the first detailed abundance analysis based upon high resolution spectra. Mild indication of s-processing for IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208-2035 and IRAS 08187-1905 have been found and a more comprehensive study of s-process enhanced objects IRAS 17279-1119 and IRAS 22223+4327 have been carried out. We have also made a contemporary abundance analysis of the high galactic latitude supergiants BD+39…
Half or more of stars more massive than our Sun are orbited by a companion star in a binary system. Many binaries have short enough orbits that the evolution of both stars is greatly altered by an exchange of mass and angular momentum between the stars. Such mass transfer is highly likely on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) because this is when a star is both very large and has strong wind mass loss. Direct mass transfer truncates the AGB, and its associated nucleosynthesis, prematurely compared to in a single star. In wide binaries we can probe nucleosynthesis in the long-dead AGB primary st…
In low-mass binary systems, mass transfer is likely to occur via a slow and dense stellar wind when one of the stars is in the AGB phase. Observations show that many binaries that have undergone AGB mass transfer have orbital periods of 1-10 yr, at odds with the predictions of binary population synthesis models. We investigate the mass-accretion efficiency and angular-momentum loss via wind mass transfer in AGB binary systems. We use these quantities to predict the evolution of the orbit. We perform 3D hydrodynamical simulations of the stellar wind lost by an AGB star using the AMUSE framework…
The origin of chemically peculiar stars and non-zero eccentricity in evolved close binaries have been long-standing problems in binary stellar evolution. Answers to these questions may trace back to an intense mass transfer during AGB binary phase. In this work, we use AstroBEAR to solve the 3D radiation-hydrodynamic equations and calculate the mass transfer rate in asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) binaries that undergo the wind-Roche-lobe-overflow or Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion. MESA produces the density and temperature of the boundary condition of the AGB star. To improve the resoluti…
Binary post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars are thought to be the products of a strong but poorly-understood interaction during the AGB phase. The aim of this contribution is to update the orbital elements of a sample of galactic post-AGB binaries observed in a long-term radial-velocity monitoring campaign. Radial velocities are computed from high signal-to-noise spectra by use of a cross-correlation method. The radial-velocity curves are fitted by using both a least-squares algorithm and a Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm. We use a Monte Carlo method to compute uncertainties on the orbi…
Several classes of stellar binaries with post-main sequence (post-MS) components - millisecond pulsars with the white dwarf companions (MSP+WD) and periods P_b~30 d, binaries hosting post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars or barium stars with P_b~several yr - feature high eccentricities (up to 0.4) despite the expectation of their efficient tidal circularization during the AGB phase. It was suggested that the eccentricities of these binaries can be naturally excited by their tidal coupling to the circumbinary disk, formed by the material ejected from the binary. Here we critically reass…
Jets are a commonly observed phenomenon in post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries. Due to the orbital motion of the binary, the jet causes variable absorption in the Balmer profiles. In previous work, we have developed spatio-kinematic and radiative transfer models to reproduce the observed Balmer line variability and derive the spatio-kinematic structure of the jet and its mass-loss rate. Here, we apply our jet model to five post-AGB binaries with distinct Hα line variability and diverse orbital properties. Our models fit the Hα line variations very well. We estimate jet mass-loss r…
We present a mid-IR interferometric survey of the circumstellar environment of a specific class of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) binaries. For this class the presence of a compact dusty disk has been postulated on the basis of various spatially unresolved measurements. Our interferometric survey was performed with the MIDI instrument on the VLTI. In total 19 different systems were observed using variable baseline configurations. Combining all the visibilities at a single wavelength at 10.7 micron, we fitted two parametric models to the data: a uniform disk (UD) and a ring model mimic…
Post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries are surrounded by massive disks of gas and dust that are similar to protoplanetary disks around young stars. We assembled a catalog of all known Galactic post-AGB binaries with disks. We explore the correlations between the different observables with the aim of learning more about potential disk-binary interactions. We compiled spectral energy distributions of 85 Galactic post-AGB binary systems. We built a color-color diagram to differentiate between the different disk morphologies traced by the infrared excess. We categorized the different dis…
Carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars, CH stars and barium stars, among other classes of chemically peculiar stars, are thought to be products of the interaction of low- and intermediate-mass binaries which occurred when the most evolved star was in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. Binary evolution models predict that if the initial orbital periods of such systems are shorter than a few thousand days, their orbits should have circularised due to tidal effects. However, observations of the progeny of AGB binaries show that many of these objects have substantial eccentricities, up to about 0.…

Modelling dust formation in single stars evolving through the carbon-star stage of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) reproduces well the mid-infrared colours and magnitudes of most of the C-rich sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), apart from a small subset of extremely red objects (EROs). The analysis of EROs spectral energy distribution suggests the presence of large quantities of dust, which demand gas densities in the outflow significantly higher than expected from theoretical modelling. We propose that binary interaction mechanisms that involve common envelope (CE) evolution could…
Post-AGB binaries are surrounded by circumbinary disks of gas and dust that are similar to protoplanetary disks found around young stars. We aim to understand the structure of these disks and identify the physical phenomena at play in their very inner regions. We want to understand the disk-binary interaction and to further investigate the comparison with protoplanetary disks. We have conducted an interferometric snapshot survey of 23 post-AGB binaries in the near-infrared (H-band) using VLTI/PIONIER. We have fitted the multiwavelength visibilities and closure phases with purely geometrical mo…
Aims. We aim to determine the geometry, density gradient, and velocity structure of jets in post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries. Methods. Our high cadence time series of high-resolution optical spectra of jet-creating post-AGB binary systems provide us with a unique tomography of the jet. We determine the spatio-kinematic structure of the jets based on these data by fitting the synthetic spectral line profiles created by our model to the observed, orbital phase-resolved, Hα-line profiles of these systems. The fitting routine is provided with an initial spectrum and is allowed to t…
We study the dynamical effects of gravitational focusing by a binary companion on winds from late-type stars. In particular, we investigate the mass transfer and formation of accretion disks around the secondary in detached systems consisting of an AGB mass-losing star and an accreting companion. The presence of mass outflows is studied as a function of mass loss rate, wind temperature and binary orbital parameters. A 2-dimensional hydrodynamical model is used to study the stability of mass transfer in wind accreting symbiotic binary systems. In our simulations we use an adiabatic equation of …
While the first binary post-AGB stars were serendipitously discovered, the distinct characteristics of their Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) allowed us to launch a more systematic search for binaries. We selected post-AGB objects which show a broad dust excess often starting already at H or K, pointing to the presence of a gravitationally bound dusty disc in the system. We started a very extensive multi-wavelength study of those systems and here we report on our radial velocity and photometric monitoring results for six stars of early F type, which are pulsators of small amplitude. To deter…
In this chapter the focus is on the properties of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) stars in binary systems. Their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are very characteristic: they show a near-infrared excess, indicative of the presence of warm dust, while the central stars are too hot to be in a dust-production evolutionary phase. This allows for an efficient detection of binary post-AGB candidates. It is now well established that the near-infrared excess is produced by the inner rim of a stable dusty disc that surrounds the binary system. These discs are scaled-up versions of protopla…
We show that substantially enhanced mass loss at periastron passages, as is expected in the grazing envelope evolution (GEE), can compensate for the circularization effect of the tidal interaction in binary systems composed of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star and a main sequence secondary star. By numerically integrating the equations of motion we show that under our assumptions the binary system can maintain its high eccentricity as the AGB star evolves toward the post-AGB phase. Our results can explain the high eccentricity of some post-AGB intermediate binaries (post-AGBIBs), i.e., tho…
Context: Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) binaries are surrounded by stable dusty and gaseous disks similar to the ones around young stellar objects. Whereas significant effort is spent on modeling observations of disks around young stellar objects, the disks around post-AGB binaries receive significantly less attention, even though they pose significant constraints on theories of disk physics and binary evolution. Aims: We want to examine the structure of and phenomena at play in circumbinary disks around post-AGB stars. We continue the analysis of our near-infrared interferometric image of…
AGB stars appear to lose mass spherically, but many PNe resulting from the AGB mass-loss have non-spherical morphologies. Compact disks have been found in some bipolar PNe, but their role in the shaping process remains unknown. Compact Keplarian disks are found to be common around post-AGB binaries, however, these objects may never develop into PNe. Another group of post-AGB stars, known as pre-PNe, are surrounded by collimated nebulae shining by reflected light or shock ionisation. We are observing the inner circumstellar regions of pre-PNe at high angular resolutions with the VLTI. We seek t…
Recently Kamath et al. (2021) analysed Gaia EDR3 data of eighteen post-AGB supergiants with overabundance of s-process elements. For some of these stars in their sample they find unusually very low absolute luminosities which is not in agreement with the s-process nucleosynthesis on the AGB stage of evolution. It appears that they have not taken into account the RUWE values of these stars. I have taken a look at the RUWE values of these eighteen post-AGB stars with over abundance of s-process elements. Of the eighteen stars thirteen have RUWE values much greater than 1.4 and hence their distan…
Wind mass transfer in binary systems with AGB donor stars plays a fundamental role in the formation of a variety of objects, including barium stars and CEMP stars. We carry out a comprehensive set of SPH simulations of wind-losing AGB stars in binaries, for a variety of binary mass ratios, orbital separations, initial wind velocities and rotation rates of the donor star. The initial parameters of the simulated systems are chosen to match the expected progenitors of CEMP stars. We find that the strength of interaction between the wind and the stars depends on both the wind-velocity-to-orbital-v…
The Mass loss of Evolved StarS (MESS) sample offers a selection of 78 Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and Red Supergiants (RSGs) observed with the PACS photometer on-board Herschel at 70 and 160 μm. For most of these objects, the dusty AGB wind differs from spherical symmetry and the wind shape can be subdivided into four classes. In the present paper we concentrate on the influence of a companion on the morphology of the stellar wind. Literature was searched to find binaries in the MESS sample and these are subsequently linked to their wind-morphology class to assert that the binaries are…
We focus on post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries and study the interaction between the different components of these complex systems. These components comprise the post-AGB primary, a main sequence secondary, a circumbinary disk, as well as a fast bipolar outflow (jet) launched by the companion. We obtained well-sampled time series of high resolution optical spectra over the last decade and these spectra provide the basis of our study. The jet is detected in absorption, at superior conjunction, when the line of sight towards the primary goes through the bipolar cone. Our spectral t…
Binary post-AGB stars are interesting laboratories to study both the evolution of binaries as well as the structure of circumstellar disks. A multiwavelength high angular resolution study of the prototypical object 89 Herculis is performed with the aim of identifying and locating the different emission components seen in the SED. A large interferometric data set, collected over the past decade and covering optical and near-IR wavelengths, is analyzed with simple geometric models. Combining the interferometric constraints with the photometry and the optical spectra, we reassess the energy budge…
Using 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations and analytic theory, we study the orbital evolution of asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) binary systems for various initial orbital separations and mass ratios, and thus different initial accretion modes. The time evolution of binary separations and orbital periods are calculated directly from the averaged mass loss rate, accretion rate and angular momentum loss rate. We separately consider spin-orbit synchronized and zero spin AGB cases. We find that the the angular momentum carried away by the mass loss together with the mass transfer can effectively s…
It is now well established that FGK post-AGB stars that are surrounded by both hot and cold dust (as derived from the spectral energy distribution), are almost always part of a binary system with $100 < P_{orb} < 5000$~days. The properties and long-term stability of the dust emission requires it to arise from a gas- and dust-rich, puffed-up and (semi-)stable circumbinary disk. This interpretation has been confirmed with spatially resolved observations at a range of wavelengths for various individual objects. Here I present the first results of the first mid-IR interferometric survey of this cl…
The late stellar evolutionary phases of low and intermediate-mass stars are strongly constrained by their mass-loss rates. The wind surrounding cool evolved stars frequently shows non-spherical features, thought to be due to an unseen companion orbiting the donor star. We study the morphology of the circumbinary envelope, in particular around oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We run a grid of 70 3D hydrodynamics simulations of a progressively accelerating wind propagating in the Roche potential formed by a mass-loosing evolved star in orbit with a main sequence companion. We res…
We have used the tidal equations of Zahn to determine the maximum orbital distance at which companions are brought into Roche lobe contact with their giant primary, when the primary expands during the giant phases. This is a key step when determining the rates of interaction between giants and their companions. Our stellar structure calculations are presented as maximum radii reached during the red and asymptotic giant branch (RGB and AGB, respectively) stages of evolution for masses between 0.8 and 4.0 Mo (Z=0.001 - 0.04) and compared with other models to gauge the uncertainty on radii derivi…
We have carried out a search for optically visible post-AGB candidates in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We used mid-IR observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope to select optically visible candidates with a mid-IR excess. We obtained low-resolution optical spectra for 801 candidates. After removing contaminants and poor quality spectra, the final sample comprised of 63 post-AGB/RGB candidates of A - F spectral type. Using the spectra, we estimated the stellar parameters: effective temperature, surface gravity and [Fe/H]. We also estimated the reddening and deduced the luminosity using …
Barium stars are s-process enriched giants. They owe their chemical peculiarities to a past mass transfer phase. During which they were polluted by their binary companion, which at the time was an AGB star, but is now an extinct white dwarf. Barium stars are thus ideal targets for understanding and constraining the s-process in low and intermediate-mass AGB stars. We derive the abundances of a large number of heavy elements in order to shed light on the conditions of operation of the neutron source responsible for the production of s-elements in the former companions of the barium stars. Adopt…
Context. The circumstellar environment of evolved stars is generally rich in molecular gas and dust. Typically, the entire environment is either oxygen-rich or carbon-rich, depending on the evolution of the central star. Aims. In this paper we discuss three evolved disc sources with evidence of atypical emission lines in their infrared spectra. The stars were taken from a larger sample of post-AGB binaries for which we have Spitzer infrared spectra, characterised by the presence of a stable oxygen-rich circumbinary disc. Our previous studies have shown that the infrared spectra of post-AGB dis…
