In this paper we address the $W^{1,1}$-continuity of several maximal operators at the gradient level. A key idea in our global strategy is the decomposition of a maximal operator, with the absence of strict local maxima in the disconnecting set, into "lateral" maximal operators with good monotonicity and convergence properties. This construction is inspired in the classical sunrise lemma in harmonic analysis. A model case for our sunrise strategy considers the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator $\widetilde{M}$ acting on $W^{1,1}_{\rm rad}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the subspace of $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ consisting of radial functions. In dimension $d\geq 2$ it was recently established by H. Luiro that the map $f \mapsto \nabla \widetilde{M} f$ is bounded from $W^{1,1}_{\rm rad}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and we show that such map is also continuous. Further applications of the sunrise strategy in connection with the $W^{1,1}$-continuity problem include non-tangential maximal operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ acting on radial functions when $d\geq 2$ and general functions when $d=1$, and the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ acting on polar functions when $d\geq 2$ and general functions when $d=1$.
In this paper we study a question related to the continuity of maximal operators of convolution type acting on $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$. We prove that the map $u\mapsto (u^{*})'$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ to $L^{1}(\mathbb{R})$, where $u^{*}$ is the maximal function associated to the Poisson kernel, the Heat kernel or a family of kernels related to the fractional Laplacian. This is the first result of this type for a centered maximal operator.
In this paper we investigate some questions related to the continuity of maximal operators in $W^{1,1}$ and $BV$ spaces, complementing some well-known boundedness results. Letting $\widetilde M$ be the one-dimensional uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, we prove that the map $f \mapsto \big(\widetilde Mf\big)'$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ to $L^1(\mathbb{R})$. In the discrete setting, we prove that $\widetilde M: BV(\mathbb{Z}) \to BV(\mathbb{Z})$ is also continuous. For the one-dimensional fractional Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, we prove by means of counterexample…
We prove the continuity of the map $f \mapsto \widetilde{M}f$ from $BV(\mathbb{R})$ to itself, where $\widetilde{M}$ is the uncentered Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator. This answers a question of Carneiro, Madrid and Pierce.
We prove the continuity of the map $f \mapsto (Mf)'$ from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ to $L^1(\mathbb{R})$, where $M$ is the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator. This solves a question posed by Carneiro, Madrid and Pierce.
In this paper we study some questions about the continuity of classical and fractional maximal operators in the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}$, in both continuous and discrete setting, giving a positive answer to two questions posed recently, one of them regarding the continuity of the map $f \mapsto \big(\widetilde M_βf\big)'$ from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ to $L^q(\mathbb{R})$, for $q=\frac{1}{1-β}$. Here $\widetilde M_β$ denotes the non-centered fractional maximal operator on $\mathbb{R}$ with $β\in(0,1)$. The second one regarding the continuity of the discrete centered maximal operator in the space o…
We establish that the map $f\mapsto |\nabla \mathcal{M}_αf|$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $α\in (0,d)$, $q=\frac{d}{d-α}$ and $\mathcal{M}_α$ denotes either the centered or non-centered fractional Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator. In particular, we cover the cases $d >1$ and $α\in (0,1)$ in full generality, for which results were only known for radial functions.
We establish continuity mapping properties of the non-centered fractional maximal operator $M_β$ in the endpoint input space $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $d \geq 2$ in the cases for which its boundedness is known. More precisely, we prove that for $q=d/(d-β)$ the map $f \mapsto |\nabla M_βf|$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $ 0 < β< 1$ if $f$ is radial and for $1 \leq β< d$ for general $f$. The results for $1\leq β< d$ extend to the centered counterpart $M_β^c$. Moreover, if $d=1$, we show that the conjectured boundedness of that map for $M_β^c$ implies i…
We obtain sharp bounds for the modulus of continuity of the uncentered maximal function in terms of the modulus of continuity of the given function, via integral formulas. Some of the results deduced from these formulas are the following: The best constants for Lipschitz and Hölder functions on proper subintervals of $\mathbb{R}$ are $\operatorname{Lip}_α( Mf) \le (1 + α)^{-1}\operatorname{Lip}_α( f)$, $α\in (0,1]$. On $\mathbb{R}$, the best bound for Lipschitz functions is $ \operatorname{Lip} ( Mf) \le (\sqrt2 -1)\operatorname{Lip}( f).$ In higher dimensions, we determine the asymptotic beha…
This paper will be devoted to study the regularity and continuity properties of the following local multilinear fractional type maximal operators, $$\mathfrak{M}_{α,Ω}(\vec{f})(x)=\sup\limits_{0<r<{\rm dist}(x,Ω^c)}\frac{r^α}{|B(x,r)|^m}\prod\limits_{i=1}^m\int_{B(x,r)}|f_i(y)|dy,\quad \hbox{for \ }0\leqα<mn,$$ where $Ω$ is a subdomain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $Ω^c=\mathbb{R}^n\backslashΩ$ and $B(x,r)$ is the ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ centered at $x$ with radius $r$. Several new pointwise estimates for the derivative of the local multilinear maximal function $\mathfrak{M}_{0,Ω}$ and the fractional maxi…
In this paper we consider properties of medians as they pertain to the continuity and vanishing oscillation of a function. Our approach is based on the observation that medians are related to local sharp maximal functions restricted to a cube of $\R^n$.
Let $m\ge 1$, in this paper, our object of investigation is the regularity and and continuity properties of the following multilinear strong maximal operator $${\mathscr{M}}_{\mathcal{R}}(\vec{f})(x)=\sup_{\substack{R \ni x R\in\mathcal{R}}}\prod\limits_{i=1}^m\frac{1}{|R|}\int_{R}|f_i(y)|dy,$$ where $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathcal{R}$ denotes the family of all rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with sides parallel to the axes. When $m=1$, denote $\mathscr{M}_{\mathcal{R}}$ by $\mathcal {M}_{\mathcal{R}}$.Then, $\mathcal {M}_{\mathcal{R}}$ coincides with the classical strong maximal function initia…
Let $\mathcal{B}$ be a homothecy invariant basis consisting of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and define the associated geometric maximal operator $M_{\mathcal{B}}$ by $$ M_{\mathcal{B}} f(x) :=\sup_{x \in R \in \mathcal{B}}\frac{1}{|R|}\int_R |f| $$ and the halo function $ϕ_{\mathcal{B}}(α)$ on $(1,\infty)$ by $$ϕ_{\mathcal B}(α) :=\sup_{E \subset \mathbb{R}^n :\, 0 < |E| < \infty}\frac{1}{|E|}|\{x\in \mathbb{R}^n : M_{\mathcal{B}} χ_E (x) >1/α\}|. $$ It is shown that if $ϕ_{\mathcal{B}}(α)$ satisfies the Solyanik estimate $ϕ_{\mathcal B}(α) - 1 \leq C (1 - \frac{1}α)^p$ for $α\in(1,\infty)$ …
We consider a conjecture attributed to Muckenhoupt and Wheeden which suggests a positive relationship between the continuity of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator and the Hilbert transform in the weighted setting. Although continuity of the two operators is equivalent for $A_p$ weights with $1 < p < \infty$, through examples we illustrate this is not the case in more general contexts. In particular, we study weights for which the maximal operator is bounded on the corresponding $L^p$ spaces while the Hilbert transform is not. We focus on weights which take the value zero on sets of non-zero…
This paper concerns the smoothness of Tauberian constants of maximal operators in the discrete and ergodic settings. In particular, we define the discrete strong maximal operator $\tilde{M}_S$ on $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by \[ \tilde{M}_S f(m) := \sup_{0 \in R \subset \mathbb{R}^n}\frac{1}{\#(R \cap \mathbb{Z}^n)}\sum_{ j\in R \cap \mathbb{Z}^n} |f(m+j)|,\qquad m\in \mathbb{Z}^n, \] where the supremum is taken over all open rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^n$ containing the origin whose sides are parallel to the coordinate axes. We show that the associated Tauberian constant $\tilde{C}_S(α)$, defined by \[ \ti…
We study the Sobolev regularity on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ of the uncentered fractional Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_β$ at the endpoint $p=1$, when acting on polar data. We first prove that if $q=\frac{d}{d-β}$, $0<β<d$ and $f$ is a polar $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{S}^d)$ function, we have $$\|\nabla \widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_βf\|_q\lesssim_{d,β}\|\nabla f\|_1.$$ We then prove that the map $$f\mapsto \big | \nabla \widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_βf \big |$$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{S}^d)$ to $L^q(\mathbb{S}^d)$ when restricted to polar data. Our methods allow us to give …
Given a space of homogeneous type $(X,μ,d)$, we prove strong-type weighted norm inequalities for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator over the variable exponent Lebesgue spaces $L^\pp$. We prove that the variable Muckenhoupt condition $\App$ is necessary and sufficient for the strong type inequality if $\pp$ satisfies log-Hölder continuity conditions and $1 < p_- \leq p_+ < \infty$. Our results generalize to spaces of homogeneous type the analogous results in Euclidean space proved by Cruz-Uribe, Fiorenza and Neugebuaer (2012).
We derive sparse bounds for the bilinear spherical maximal function in any dimension $d\geq 1$. When $d\geq 2$, this immediately recovers the sharp $L^p\times L^q\to L^r$ bound of the operator and implies quantitative weighted norm inequalities with respect to bilinear Muckenhoupt weights, which seems to be the first of their kind for the operator. The key innovation is a group of newly developed continuity $L^p$ improving estimates for the single scale bilinear spherical averaging operator.
In this paper we investigate the $L^p$ boundedness of the lacunary maximal function $ M_{\Ha}^{lac} $ associated to the spherical means $ A_r f$ taken over Koranyi spheres on the Heisenberg group. Closely following an approach used by M. Lacey in the Euclidean case, we obtain sparse bounds for these maximal functions leading to new unweighted and weighted estimates. The key ingredients in the proof are the $L^p$ improving property of the operator $A_rf$ and a continuity property of the difference $A_rf-τ_y A_rf$, where $τ_yf(x)=f(xy^{-1})$ is the right translation operator.
Let $\mathsf M$ and $\mathsf M _{\mathsf S}$ respectively denote the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator with respect to cubes and the strong maximal operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, and let $w$ be a nonnegative locally integrable function on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We define the associated Tauberian functions $\mathsf{C}_{\mathsf{HL},w}(α)$ and $\mathsf{C}_{\mathsf{S},w}(α)$ on $(0,1)$ by \[ \mathsf{C}_{\mathsf{HL},w}(α) :=\sup_{\substack{E \subset \mathbb{R}^n \\ 0 < w(E) < \infty}} \frac{1}{w(E)}w(\{x \in \mathbb{R}^n : \mathsf M χ_E(x) > α\}) \] and \[ \mathsf{C}_{\mathsf{S},w}(α) := \sup_{\substack{E \s…
Let $M_{Ω,α}$ and $T_{Ω,α}$ be the fractional maximal and integral operators with rough kernels, where $0<α<n$. In this paper, we shall study the continuity properties of $M_{Ω,α}$ and $T_{Ω,α}$ on the weighted Morrey spaces $L^{p,κ}(w)$. The boundedness of their commutators with BMO functions is also obtained.
