A quantitative understanding of the electromagnetic response of materials is essential for the precise engineering of maximal, versatile, and controllable light--matter interactions. Material surfaces, in particular, are prominent platforms for enhancing electromagnetic interactions and for tailoring chemical processes. However, at the deep nanoscale, the electromagnetic response of electron systems is significantly impacted by quantum surface-response at material interfaces, which is challenging to probe using standard optical techniques. Here, we show how ultra-confined acoustic graphene plasmons (AGPs) in graphene--dielectric--metal structures can be used to probe the quantum surface-response functions of nearby metals, here encoded through the so-called Feibelman $d$-parameters. Based on our theoretical formalism, we introduce a concrete proposal for experimentally inferring the low-frequency quantum response of metals from quantum shifts of the AGPs' dispersion, and demonstrate that the high field confinement of AGPs can resolve intrinsically quantum mechanical electronic length-scales with subnanometer resolution. Our findings reveal a promising scheme to probe the quantum response of metals, and further suggest the utilization of AGPs as plasmon rulers with ångström-scale accuracy.
We propose a scheme for coupling laser light into graphene plasmons with the help of electrically generated surface acoustic waves. The surface acoustic wave forms a diffraction grating which allows to excite the long lived phonon-like branch of the hybridized graphene plasmon-phonon dispersion with infrared laser light. Our approach avoids patterning the graphene sheet, does not rely on complicated optical near-field techniques, and allows to electrically switch the coupling between far field radiation and propagating graphene plasmons.
Recently, it was demonstrated that a graphene/dielectric/metal configuration can support acoustic plasmons, which exhibit extreme plasmon confinement an order of magnitude higher than that of conventional graphene plasmons. Here, we investigate acoustic plasmons supported in a monolayer and multilayers of black phosphorus (BP) placed just a few nanometers above a conducting plate. In the presence of a conducting plate, the acoustic plasmon dispersion for the armchair direction is found to exhibit the characteristic linear scaling in the mid- and far-infrared regime while it largely deviates fr…
Ultrasensitive acoustic graphene plasmons in a graphene-transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructure: strong plasmon-phonon coupling and wavelength sensitivity enhanced by a metal screen
Recent theoretical considerations have demonstrated that freestanding graphene doped with alkali metals (AC x ) supports strong Dirac and weak acoustic plasmons. Here we show that when AC x is deposited on a metallic surface, the intense Coulomb screening completely washes out these collective modes. However, even small increase of separation between AC x and metallic surface causes recovery of AC x plasmonic properties and especially the enhancement of acoustic plasmons intensities not present in the freestanding case. We further provide the physical background of these intriguing phenomena. …
We theoretically demonstrate the coupling between excitons in 2D semiconductors and surface plasmons in a thin metal film by means of a surface acoustic wave (SAW), proving that the generated exciton-plasmon polaritons (or plexcitons) are in the strong coupling regime. The strain field of the SAW creates a dynamic diffraction grating providing the momentum match for the surface plasmons, whereas the piezoelectric field, that could dissociate the excitons, is cancelled out by the metal. This is exemplified for monolayer MoS$\mathrm{_{2}}$ and mono- and few-layer black phosphorus on top of a thi…
Non-reciprocal plasmons in current-driven, isotropic, and homogenous graphene with proximal metallic gates is theoretically explored. Nearby metallic gates screen the Coulomb interactions, leading to linearly dispersive acoustic plasmons residing close to its particle-hole continuum counterpart. We show that the applied bias leads to spectral broadband focused plasmons whose resonance linewidth is dependent on the angular direction relative to the current flow due to Landau damping. We predict that forward focused non-reciprocal plasmons are possible with accessible experimental parameters and…
We study the effect of two metallic slabs on the collective dynamics of electrons in graphene positioned between the two slabs. We show that if the slabs are perfect conductors the plasmons of graphene display a linear dispersion relation. The velocity of these acoustic plasmons crucially depends on the distance between the two metal gates and the graphene sheet. In the case of generic slabs, the dispersion relation of graphene plasmons is much more complicated but we find that acoustic plasmons can still be obtained under specific conditions.
The hydrodynamic Drude model known from metal plasmonics also applies to semiconductor structures of sizes in between single-particle quantum confinement and bulk. But contrary to metals, for semiconductors two or more types of plasma may have to be taken into account in order to properly describe their plasmonic properties. In this combined analytical and computational study, we explore predictions of the recently proposed two-fluid hydrodynamic Drude model for the optical properties of plasmonic semiconductor nanowires, in particular for thermally excited InSb nanowires. We focus on the low-…
Dispersion of acoustic plasmons and isotropic Landau parameters are calculated in three- and two-dimensional two-component electron-electron and electron-hole liquids at various concentration and mass ratios using Landau-Silin kinetic equation and the random phase approximation for the self-energy. It is shown that the mode propagation and the strength of quasiparticle interaction are determined by the intercomponent screening and are asymmetric with respect to charge composition of two-component liquid. The well-defined acoustic plasmon-zero sound mode arises at strong difference in concentra…
We demonstrate that single-layer graphene in the presence of a metal gate displays a gapless collective (plasmon) mode that has a linear dispersion at long wavelengths. We calculate exactly the acoustic-plasmon group velocity at the level of the random phase approximation and carry out microscopic calculations of the one-body spectral function of such system. Despite screening exerted by the metal, we find that graphene's quasiparticle spectrum displays a very rich structure characterized by composite hole-acoustic plasmon satellite bands (that we term for brevity "soundarons"), which can be o…
Surface plasmon polaritons in graphene couple strongly to surface phonons in polar substrates leading to hybridized surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs). We demonstrate that a surface acoustic wave (SAW) can be used to launch propagating SPPPs in graphene/h-BN heterostructures on a piezoelectric substrate like AlN, where the SAW-induced surface modulation acts as a dynamic diffraction grating. The efficiency of the light coupling is greatly enhanced by the introduction of the h-BN film as compared to the bare graphene/AlN system. The h-BN interlayer not only significantly changes the disp…
Plasmons, the collective excitations of electrons in the bulk or at the surface, play an important role in the properties of materials, and have generated the field of Plasmonics. We report the observation of a highly unusual acoustic plasmon mode on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), Bi2Se3, using momentum resolved inelastic electron scattering. In sharp contrast to ordinary plasmon modes, this mode exhibits almost linear dispersion into the second Brillouin zone and remains prominent with remarkably weak damping not seen in any other systems. This behavior must be…
First-principles calculations of the conventional and acoustic surface plasmons (CSPs and ASPs) on the (111) surfaces of Cu, Ag, and Au are presented. The effect of $s-d$ interband transitions on both types of plasmons is investigated by comparing results from the local density approximation and an orbital dependent exchange-correlation (xc) potential that improves the position and width of the $d$ bands. The plasmon dispersions calculated with the latter xc-potential agree well with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments. For both the CSP and ASP, the same trend of Cu$<$Au$<$Ag …
Massless chiral fermions emergent in inversion symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals (WSMs) reside in the vicinity of multiple low symmetry nodes and thus acquire strongly anisotropic dispersion. We investigate the longitudinal electromagnetic modes of two-component degenerate Weyl plasma relevant to the realistic band structure of type-I WSM. We show that the actual spectrum of three dimensional collective density excitations in TaAs family of WSM is gaples due to emergence of acoustic plasmons corresponding to out-of-phase oscillations of the plasma components. These modes exist around the [001]…
Fundamental interactions induced by lattice vibrations on ultrafast time scales become increasingly important for modern nanoscience and technology. Experimental access to the physical properties of acoustic phonons in the THz frequency range and over the entire Brillouin zone is crucial for understanding electric and thermal transport in solids and their compounds. Here, we report on the generation and nonlinear propagation of giant (1 percent) acoustic strain pulses in hybrid gold/cobalt bilayer structures probed with ultrafast surface plasmon interferometry. This new technique allows for un…
Low-energy collective electronic excitations exhibiting sound-like linear dispersion have been intensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for a long time. However, coherent acoustic plasmon modes appearing in time-domain measurements are rarely observed due to Landau damping by the single-particle continua. Here we report on the observation of coherent acoustic Dirac plasmon (CADP) modes excited in indirectly (electrostatically) opposite-surface coupled films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. Using transient second harmonic generation, a technique capable of independently mon…
An acoustic plasmon is predicted to occur, in addition to the conventional two-dimensional (2D) plasmon, as the collective motion of a system of two types of electronic carriers coexisting in the very same 2D band of extrinsic (doped or gated) graphene. The origin of this novel mode resides in the strong anisotropy that is present in the graphene band structure near the Dirac point. This anisotropy allows for the coexistence of carriers moving with two distinct Fermi velocities along the Gamma-K direction, which leads to two modes of collective oscillation: one mode in which the two types of e…
Plasmonic cavities can confine electromagnetic radiation to deep sub-wavelength regimes. This facilitates strong coupling phenomena to be observed at the limit of individual quantum emitters. Here we report an extensive set of measurements of plasmonic cavities hosting one to a few semiconductor quantum dots. Scattering spectra show Rabi splitting, demonstrating that these devices are close to the strong coupling regime. Using Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry, we observe non-classical emission, allowing us to directly determine the number of emitters in each device. Surprising features i…

Hydrodynamic flow in two-dimensional electron systems has so far been probed only by dc transport and scanning gate microscopy measurements. In this work we discuss theoretically signatures of the hydrodynamic regime in near-field optical microscopy. We analyze the dispersion of acoustic plasmon modes in two-dimensional electron liquids using a non-local conductivity that takes into account the effects of (momentum-conserving) electron-electron collisions, (momentum-relaxing) electron-phonon and electron-impurity collisions, and many-body interactions beyond the celebrated Random Phase Approxi…
We study Dirac plasmons and their damping in spatially separated $N$-layer graphene structures at finite doping and temperatures. The plasmon spectrum consists of one optical excitation with a square-root dispersion and $N-1$ acoustical excitations with linear dispersions, which are undamped at zero temperature within a triangular energy region outside the electron-hole continuum. For any finite number of graphene layers we have found that the energy and weight of the optical plasmon increase in the long wavelength limit, respectively, as square-root and linear functions of $N$. This is in agr…
Recent years have seen a growing interest in strong coupling between plasmons and excitons, as a way to generate new quantum optical testbeds and influence chemical dynamics and reactivity. Strong coupling to bright plasmonic modes has been achieved even with single quantum emitters. Dark plasmonic modes fare better in some applications due to longer lifetimes, but are difficult to probe as they are subradiant. Here, we apply electron energy loss (EEL) spectroscopy to demonstrate that a dark mode of an individual plasmonic bowtie can interact with a small number of quantum emitters, as evidenc…
Surface plasmons are collective oscillations of electrons in metals or semiconductors enabling confinement and control of electromagnetic energy at subwavelength scales. Rapid progress in plasmonics has largely relied on advances in device nano-fabrication, whereas less attention has been paid to the tunable properties of plasmonic media. One such medium-graphene-is amenable to convenient tuning of its electronic and optical properties with gate voltage. Through infrared nano-imaging we explicitly show that common graphene/SiO2/Si back-gated structures support propagating surface plasmons. The…
We reveal new aspects of the interaction between plasmons and phonons in 2D materials that go beyond a mere shift and increase in plasmon width due to coupling to either intrinsic vibrational modes of the material or phonons in a supporting substrate. More precisely, we predict strong plasmon splitting due to this coupling, resulting in a characteristic avoided crossing scheme. We base our results on a computationally efficient approach consisting in including many-body interactions through the electron self-energy. We specify this formalism for a description of plasmons based upon a tight-bin…
We analyze the effect of a strong Zeeman field on the spectrum of collective excitations of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. The combination of the Dresselhaus type spin orbit coupling and an external Zeeman field result in the lifting of the valley degeneracy in the valence band of these crystals. We show that this lifting of the valley degeneracy manifests in the appearance of an additional plasmon mode with linear in wavenumber dispersion along with the standard square root in wavenumber mode. Despite this novel mode being subject to the Landau damping, it corresponds to a well d…
The existence of an acoustic plasmon in extrinsic (doped or gated) monolayer graphene was found recently in an {\it ab initio} calculation with the frozen lattice [M. Pisarra {\it et al.}, arXiv:1306.6273, 2013]. By the {\em fully dynamic} density-functional perturbation theory approach, we demonstrate a strong coupling of the acoustic plasmonic mode to lattice vibrations. Thereby, the acoustic plasmon in graphene does not exist as an isolated excitation, but it is rather bound into a combined plasmon-phonon mode. We show that the coupling provides a mechanism for the {\em bidirectional} energ…
Terahertz (THz) fields are widely applied for sensing, communication and quality control. In future applications, they could be efficiently confined, enhanced and manipulated - well below the classical diffraction limit - through the excitation of graphene plasmons (GPs). These possibilities emerge from the strongly reduced GP wavelength, lp, compared to the photon wavelength, l0, which can be controlled by modulating the carrier density of graphene via electrical gating. Recently, GPs in a graphene-insulator-metal configuration have been predicted to exhibit a linear dispersion (thus called a…
We present a microscopic theory on the observation of a beating pattern in the radiation-induced magnetoresistance oscillations at very low magnetic field. We con- sider that such a beating pattern develops as a result of the coupling between two oscillatory components: the first is a system of electron Landau states being harmon- ically driven by radiation. The second is a lattice oscillation, i.e., an acoustic phonon mode. We analyze the dependence of the beating pattern on temperature, radiation frequency and power. We conclude that the beating pattern is an evidence of the radiation-driven…
We study plasmon modes of the two-dimensional electron gas residing at the interface of band insulators $\rm{LaAlO_3}$ and $\rm{SrTiO_3}$ (LAO/STO) and the plasmon excitations of graphene-LAO/STO double layer as well. Considering the electron-electron interaction within random phase approximation, we calculate the plasmon dispersions of both systems numerically and in the long wavelength limit analytical expressions for collective modes are found. One optical mode and two (three) acoustic modes are predicted for the LAO/STO (graphene-LAO/STO) system where only the uppermost acoustic mode of bo…
We investigate the dispersion relation and damping of plasmon modes in a bilayer-monolayer graphene heterostructure with carrier densities and at zero temperature within the random-phase-approximation taking into account the nonhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. We derive analytical expressions for plasmon frequencies by using long wavelength expansion of response and bare Coulomb interaction functions. We show that optical plasmon dispersion curve of the bilayer-monolayer system lies slightly below that of double-layer graphene (DLG) and the acoustic one lies much lower t…
Strong light-matter interactions in both the single-emitter and collective strong coupling regimes attract significant attention due to emerging quantum and nonlinear optics applications, as well as opportunities for modifying material-related properties. Further exploration of these phenomena requires an appropriate theoretical methodology, which is demanding since polaritons are at the intersection between quantum optics, solid state physics and quantum chemistry. Fortunately, however, nanoscale polaritons can be realized in small plasmon-molecule systems, which in principle allows treating …
We study plasmon modes in doped AA-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) within the nearest-neighbor tight-binding and the random phase approximation. We obtain closed analytical expressions for the polarizability function which are used to obtain the low-energy dispersion relations of and the numerical results for both acoustic and optical plasmon modes. Our result reveal the potential of AA-stacked BLG to be used as a tunable plasmonic device. In particular we find that the long-wavelength acoustic plasmon disperse as $ω_{+}\approx\sqrt{max(|μ|,t_{1})q}$ with a phase space which shrinks and vanishe…
We report angle-resolved Raman scattering observations of the temperature dependent Landau damping of the acoustic plasmon in an electron bilayer system realised in a GaAs double quantum well structure. Corresponding calculations of the charge-density excitation spectrum of the electron bilayer using forms of the random phase approximation (RPA), and the static local field formalism of Singwi, Tosi, Land and Sjölander (STLS) extended to incorporate non-zero electron temperature $T_{\rm e}$ and phenomenological damping, are also presented. The STLS calculations include details of the temperatur…
We present numerical and analytical results for the optical and acoustic plasmon collective modes of coupled massless-Dirac two-dimensional electron systems. Our results apply to topological insulator (TI) thin films and to two graphene sheets separated by a thin dielectric barrier layer. We find that because of strong bulk dielectric screening TI acoustic modes are locked to the top of the particle-hole continuum and therefore probably unobservable.
We explore the temperature-dependent plasmonic modes of an n-doped double-layer silicene system which is composed of two spatially separated single layers of silicene with a distance large enough to prevent the interlayer electron tunneling. By applying an externally applied electric field, we numerically obtain the poles of the loss function within the so-called random phase approximation, to investigate the effects of temperature and geometry on the plasmon branches in three different regimes: topological insulator, valley-spin polarized metal, and band insulator. Also, we present the finite…
Manipulation of mechanical motion at the micro-scale has been attracting continuous attention, leading to the successful implementation of various strategies with potential impact on classical and quantum information processing. We here propose an approach based on the interplay between a pair of localized mechanical resonators and travelling surface acoustic waves (SAW). We demonstrate the existence of a two-sided interaction, allowing to use SAW to trigger and control the resonator oscillation, and to manipulate the elastic energy distribution on the substrate through resonator coupling. Obs…
Pump-probe spectroscopy is central for exploring ultrafast dynamics of fundamental excitations, collective modes and energy transfer processes. Typically carried out using conventional diffraction-limited optics, pump-probe experiments inherently average over local chemical, compositional, and electronic inhomogeneities. Here we circumvent this deficiency and introduce pump-probe infrared spectroscopy with ~20 nm spatial resolution, far below the diffraction limit, which is accomplished using a scattering scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). This technique allows us to investigate …
Graphene plasmons have recently attracted a great deal of attention because of their tunability, long lifetime, and high degree of field confinement in the vertical direction. Nearby metal gates have been shown to modify the graphene plasmon dispersion and further confine their electric field. We study the plasmons of a graphene sheet deposited on a metal, in the regime in which metal bands do not hybridize with massless Dirac fermion bands. We derive exact results for the dispersion and lifetime of the plasmons of such hybrid system, taking into account metal nonlocalities. The graphene plasm…
Graphene sheets encapsulated between hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) slabs display superb electronic properties due to very limited scattering from extrinsic disorder sources such as Coulomb impurities and corrugations. Such samples are therefore expected to be ideal platforms for highly-tunable low-loss plasmonics in a wide spectral range. In this Article we present a theory of collective electron density oscillations in a graphene sheet encapsulated between two hBN semi-infinite slabs (hBN/G/hBN). Graphene plasmons hybridize with hBN optical phonons forming hybrid plasmon-phonon (HPP) modes. W…
We report a plasmon-polaron mode of a 2D electron gas occupying surface states of a 3D topological crystal. This new, low-frequency, acoustic plasmon mode splits-off from the conventional spin-plasmon mode as a result of strong interactions of the surface electrons with bulk phonons. We show that, like in the case of the conventional spin-plasmon, the scattering of this mode is strongly suppressed in some regions of the phase space. This signature of the topological protection leads to an Umklapp-free mode dispersion at the Brillouin zone boundary. Such a plasmon polaron mode has indeed been r…
In an earlier work, it was shown that the dispersion of the van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) of graphene monolayer on 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (GrTMD) substrate comprises of the spin-split, gapped bands. Using these it was also shown that the intra-band plasmon dispersion for the finite doping and the long wavelength limit involves the q2/3 (unconventional) behaviour and not the well known q1/2 behaviour. In this paper the optical conductivity and the optical properties of this vdWH are reported. We find that there are no (inter-band) plasmons for electron doping as long as the…
We study the selective excitation at infrared and THz frequencies of optical and acoustic plasmonic modes supported by thin topological insulators. These modes are characterized by effective net charge or net spin density, respectively, and we study their excitation by combining many-body and electromagnetic calculations. We first show that non-locality can significantly modify the plasmonic response: it changes the energy of propagating plasmons up to tens of percent. We then discuss how, by changing the distance between a dipolar source and a semi-infinite 10 nm thin film, it is possible to …
Localized surface plasmons are confined collective oscillations of electrons in metallic nanoparticles. When driven by light, the optical response is dictated by geometrical parameters and the dielectric environment and plasmons are therefore extremely important for sensing applications. Plasmons in graphene disks have the additional benefit to be highly tunable via electrical stimulation. Mechanical vibrations create structural deformations in ways where the excitation of localized surface plasmons can be strongly modulated. We show that the spectral shift in such a scenario is determined by …
Full ranges of both hybrid plasmon-mode dispersions and their damping are studied systematically by our recently developed mean-field theory in open systems involving a conducting substrate and a two-dimensional (2D) material with a buckled honeycomb lattice, such as silicene, germanene, and a group \rom{4} dichalcogenide as well. In this hybrid system, the single plasmon mode for a free-standing 2D layer is split into one acoustic-like and one optical-like mode, leading to a dramatic change in the damping of plasmon modes. In comparison with gapped graphene, critical features associated with …
Self-consistent field theory is used to obtain the non-local plasmon dispersion relation of monolayer graphene which is Coulomb-coupled to a thick conductor. We calculate numerically the undamped plasmon excitation spectrum for arbitrary wave number. For gapped graphene, both the low-frequency (acoustic) and high frequency (surface) plasmons may lie within an undamped opening in the particle-hole region. Furthermore, we obtain plasmon excitations in a region of frequency-wave vector space which do not exist for free-standing gapped graphene.
Graphene hybrids, made of thin insulators, graphene, and metals can support propagating acoustic plasmons (AGPs). The metal screening modifies the dispersion relation of usual graphene plasmons leading to slowly propagating plasmons, with record confinement of electromagnetic radiation. Here, we show that a graphene monolayer, covered by a thin dielectric material and an array of metallic nanorods can be used as a robust platform to emulate the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We calculate the Zak's phase of the different plasmonic bands to characterise their topology. The system shows bulk-edge co…
Exploring low-loss two-dimensional plasmon modes is considered central for achieving light manipulation at the nanoscale and applications in plasmonic science and technology. In this context, pump-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating these collective modes and the corresponding energy transfer processes. Here, I present a first-principles study on non-equilibrium Dirac plasmon in graphene, wherein damping channels under ultrafast conditions are still not fully explored. The laser-induced blueshift of plasmon energy is explained in terms of thermal increase of the electron-ho…
We report the dispersion measurements, using angle-resolved reflection electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy (AREELS), on two-dimensional (2D) plasmons in single and multilayer graphene which couple strongly to surface optical phonon (FK phonon) modes of silicon carbide substrate. The coupled modes show discrete dispersion behaviors in the single and bilayer graphene. With increasing graphene layers on SiC(0001), a transition from plasmon-like dispersion to phonon-like dispersion is observed. For plasmon-like modes, the dispersion is strongly damped by electron-hole pair excitations at entering si…
A periodic arrangement of 2D conducting planes is known to host a (bulk) plasmon dispersion that interpolates between the typical, gapped behavior of 3D metals and a gapless, acoustic regime as a function of the out-of-plane wavevector. The semi-infinite system -- the configuration relevant to Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) in a reflection geometry, as in High Resolution EELS (HREELS) -- is known to host a surface plasmon that ceases to propagate below a cutoff wavevector. As the f-sum rule requires a finite response whether or not there exist sharp excitations, we demonstrate that w…
The present paper theoretically investigates features of quantum dynamics for localized plasmons in three-particle or four-particle spaser systems consisting of metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots. In the framework of the mean field approximation, the conditions for the observation of stable stationary regimes for single-particle plasmons in spaser systems are revealed, and realization of these regimes is discussed. The strong dipole-dipole interaction between adjacent nanoparticles for the four-particle spaser system is investigated. We show that this interaction can lead to th…
