Optical coupling of two identical dielectric particles gives rise to bonding and anti-bonding resonances.
The latter is featured by significant narrowing of the resonant width and strong enhancement of the $Q$ factor for the high index micron size particles in subwavelength range. We consider particles shaped as spheres and disks under coaxial illumination of dual incoherent counter propagating Bessel beams. In the case of spheres we derive analytical expressions for the optical binding (OB) force which decreases as $1/L^2$ for large distance $L$ between the spheres and displays two periods of oscillations. For close distances the OB force enormously increases in the resonant regime.
The case of two coaxial disks owing to variation of the distance between disks and aspect ratio of each disk is featured by extremal enhancement of the $Q$ factor compared to the case of two spheres. In that case we demonstrate unprecedent enhancement of the OB force up to several decades of nano Newtons. We show that the magnitude and sign of the OB force strongly depend on the longitudinal wave vector of the Bessel beams.
Controlling the near field optical binding force can be a key factor for particle clustering, aggregation and localized surface plasmon sensors. So far there is no generic way to reverse the near field optical binding force for plasmonic or dielectric nano-dimers of distinct shapes (cube, cylinder, ring, sphere). In this article, for both plasmonic and dielectric objects, we have demonstrated a general way to control the reversal of near field binding force for different shaped dimer sets. The force reversal is achieved by simple breaking of symmetry, considering the nano particles are half or…

The general features of the light scattering resulting in the so-called resonant Wood's anomalies in the reflection and transmission spectra are described using the effective parameters of a quasi-guided mode. The expression determining the spectral angular dependence of Wood's anomaly in the case of plasmonic grating structures is given and compared to the analogous expression for dielectric grating structures. Comparison of the resonant Wood's anomalies (RWA) with the surface plasmon-polariton resonances (SPPRs) is discussed as well.
All-dielectric resonant nanophotonics lies at the heart of modern optics and nanotechnology due to the unique possibilities to control scattering of light from high-index dielectric nanoparticles and metasurfaces. One of the important concepts of dielectric Mie-resonant nanophotonics is associated with the Kerker effect that drives the unidirectional scattering of light from nanoantennas and Huygens' metasurfaces. Here we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a novel effect manifested in the nearly complete simultaneous suppression of both forward and backward scattered fields. This effect is…
We theoretically demonstrate mechanical tuning of the spectral response of a Mie-like resonant dielectric metasurface consisting of crossed all-dielectric strip gratings. We use two array of parallel dielectric strips superimposed on each other to mechanically alter the crossing angle between them thereby changing the position of the maximum of the spectral response in a wide frequency range. The metasurface structure is considered as a doubly-periodic system in an oblique mesh. This mechanically controllable metasurface can be perspective in developing of a flexible polarization-sensitive opt…
Future technologies underpinning high-performance optical communications, ultrafast computations and compact biosensing will rely on densely packed reconfigurable optical circuitry based on nanophotonics. For many years, plasmonics was considered as the only available platform for nanoscale optics, but the recently emerged novel field of Mie resonant metaphotonics provides more practical alternatives for nanoscale optics by employing resonances in high-index dielectric nanoparticles and structures. In this mini-review we highlight some recent trends in the physics of dielectric Mie-resonant na…
Subwavelength-thin metasurfaces have shown great promises for the control of optical wavefronts, thus opening new pathways for the development of efficient flat optics. In particular, Huygens' metasurfaces based on all-dielectric resonant meta-atoms have already shown a huge potential for practical applications with their polarization insensitivity and high transmittance efficiency. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a polarization insensitive holographic Huygens' metasurface based on dielectric resonant meta-atoms capable of complex wavefront control at telecom wavelengths. Our metasurface p…
Exceptional points (EPs) are special parameter values of a non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem where eigenfunctions corresponding to a multiple eigenvalue coalesce. In optics, EPs are associated with a number of counter-intuitive wave phenomena, and have potential applications in lasing, sensing, mode conversion and spontaneous emission processes. For open photonic structures, resonant states are complex-frequency solutions of the Maxwell's equations with outgoing radiation conditions. For open dielectric structures without material gain or loss, the eigenvalue problem for resonant states can hav…
Evolution of resonant frequencies and resonant modes as dependent on the aspect ratio is considered in a dielectric high index spheroid. Because of rotational symmetry of the spheroid the solutions are separated by the azimuthal index $m$. By the two-fold variation of a refractive index and the aspect ratio we achieve exceptional points (EPs) at which the resonant frequencies and resonant modes are coalesced in the sectors $m=0$ for both TE and TM polarizations and $m=1$.
Manipulating light on the nanoscale has become a central challenge in metadevices, resonant surfaces, nanoscale optical sensors, and many more, and it is largely based on resonant light confinement in dispersive and lossy metals and dielectrics. Here, we experimentally implement a novel strategy for dielectric nanophotonics: Resonant subwavelength confinement of light in air. We demonstrate that voids created in high-index dielectric host materials support localized resonant modes with exceptional optical properties. Due to the confinement in air, the modes do not suffer from the loss and disp…
The physical origins of the transverse optical binding force and torque beyond the Rayleigh approximation have not been clearly expressed to date. Here, we present analytical expressions of the force and torque for a dual dipolar dielectric dimer illuminated by a plane wave propagating perpendicularly to the dimer axis. Using this analytical model, we explore the roles of the hybridized electric dipolar, magnetic dipolar, and electric-magnetic dipolar coupling interactions in the total force and torque on the particles. We find significant departures from the predictions of the Rayleigh approx…
In general, the optical binding force between identical particles is thought to be symmetric. However,we demonstrate analytically a counter-intuitively asymmetric longitudinal optical binding force between two identical dual dipolar dielectric particles. This homodimer is confined in two counter-propagating incoherent plane waves along the dimer's axis. The force consists of the electric dipolar, magnetic dipolar, and electric-magnetic dipolar coupling interactions. The combined effect of these interactions is markedly different than the expected behavior in the Rayleigh approximation. The asymmetric …
Evanescent waves in a metal thin film with nonlocality are found to propagate in normal direction to film surface with quenched (to zero) energy dissipation associated with intra-band electron transitions when wave numbers satisfy a resonant condition. It is shown that resonant quenching of energy dissipation (RQED) effect occurs in metal films with thicknesses of less or larger than, but still on the order of, the nonlocality scale length. RQED ceases to exist in metal films whose thickness exceeds a cutoff length or in metal films with local dielectric permittivity. Resonant quenching of ene…
We develop a multipolar theory of second-harmonic generation (SHG) by dielectric nanoparticles made of noncentrosymmetric materials with bulk quadratic nonlinearity. We specifically analyze two regimes of optical excitation: illumination by a plane wave and single-mode excitation, when the laser pump drives the magnetic dipole mode only. Considering two classes of nonlinear crystalline solids (dielectric perovskite material and III-V semiconductor), we apply a symmetry approach to derive selection rules for the multipolar composition of the nonlinear radiation. The developed description can be…
We demonstrate how to create all-dielectric metasurfaces with a strong toroidal response by arranging two types of nanodisks into asymmetric quadrumer clusters. We demonstrate that a strong axial toroidal response of the metasurface is related to conditions of the trapped (dark) mode that is excited due the symmetry breaking in the cluster. We study the correlation between the toroidal response and asymmetry in the metasurface and nanocluster geometries, which appears from the different diameters of nanodisks or notches introduced into the nanodisks.
High index dielectric spherical particle supports the high-$Q$ resonant Mie modes that results in a regular series of sharp resonances in the radiation pressure. A presence of perfectly conducting metal surface transforms the Mie modes into the extremely high-$Q$ magnetic bonding or electric anti-bonding modes for close approaching of the sphere to the surface. We show that the electromagnetic plane wave with normal incidence results in repulsive or attractive resonant optical forces relative to metal for excitation of the electric bonding or magnetic anti-bonding resonant modes respectively. …
Two-parametric variation over the aspect ratio of each disk and distance between disks gives rise to numerous events of avoided crossing of resonances of individual disks. For these events the hybridized anti-bonding resonant modes can acquire a morphology close to the Mie resonant mode with high orbital momentum of equivalent sphere. The $Q$ factor of such resonance can exceed the $Q$ factor of isolated disk by two orders in magnitude. We show that dual incoherent counter propagating coaxial Bessel beams with power $1mW/μm^2$ with frequency resonant to such a anti-bonding modes result in unpr…
Resonant metasurfaces have received extensive attention due to their sharp spectral feature and extraordinary field enhancement. In this work, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of silicon nanopillars, we achieve a sharp Fano resonance. The far-field radiation and near-field distribution of metasurfaces are calculated and analyzed to further uncover the resonant performance of metasurfaces. Moreover, the theoretical derivation and simulation exhibit an inverse quadratic dependence of Q-factors on asymmetry parameters, revealing that the resonance is governed by the symmetry-protected bound stat…
Mie-resonant high-index dielectric particles are at the core of modern all-dielectric photonics. In many situations, their response to the external fields is well-captured by the dipole model which neglects the excitation of higher-order multipoles. In that case, it is commonly assumed that the dipole moments induced by the external fields are given by the product of particle polarizability tensor and the field in the particle center. Here, we demonstrate that the dipole response of non-spherical subwavelength dielectric particles is significantly more complex since the dipole moments are defi…
In recent years resonant semiconductor and all-dielectric nanophotonics offered a lot of possibilities for thermally-induced light manipulation at the nanoscale. Owing to high-quality resonant states, such nanostructures allow for efficient light-to-heat conversion supported by various temperature detection approaches based on thermally sensitive intrinsic optical responses (photoluminescence, Raman scattering, thermorefraction etc.). In this work, we study theoretically a phenomenon of the photothermal reshaping of the radiation pattern of second-harmonic generation (SHG) that occurs in reson…
Fano resonance has raised great attention in nanophotonics attributing to its unique properties. In this work, we study the imaging function of Fano-resonant silicon metasurfece governed by quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). First, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of nanodisks, a symmetry-protected quasi-BIC is excited with the emergence of a sharp Fano resonance. The near field distributions, multipole contributions and radiation patterns of the metasurface are performed to uncover the mechanism and characteristics of this resonance. In addition, we investigate the imaging function o…
Resonant dielectric nanoparticles (RDNs) made of materials with large positive dielectric permittivity, such as Si, GaP, GaAs, have become a powerful platform for modern light science, enabling various fascinating applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. In addition to light localization at the nanoscale, dielectric nanostructures provide electric and magnetic resonant responses throughout the visible and infrared spectrum, low dissipative losses and optical heating, low doping effect and absence of quenching, which are interesting for spectroscopy and biosensing applications. In this…
Nonlinear optical phenomena in nanostructured materials have been challenging our perceptions of nonlinear optical processes that have been explored since the invention of lasers. For example, the ability to control optical field confinement, enhancement, and scattering almost independently, allows nonlinear frequency conversion efficiencies to be enhanced by many orders of magnitude compared to bulk materials. Also, the subwavelength length scale renders phase matching issues irrelevant. Compared with plasmonic nanostructures, dielectric resonator metamaterials show great promise for enhanced…
Optically resonant all-dielectric nanostructures attractively exhibit reduced losses compared to their plasmonic counterparts; however, achieving strong field enhancements at the nanoscale, especially within solid-state media, has remained a significant challenge. In this work, we demonstrate how subwavelength modifications to a conventional silicon nanodisk enable strong sub-diffractive and polarization dependent field enhancements in devices supporting anapole-like modes. We examine the electromagnetic properties of both individual and arrayed diabolo nanodisks, which are found to exhibit |E…
Nonradiating sources of energy have traditionally been studied in quantum mechanics and astrophysics, while receiving a very little attention in the photonics community. This situation has changed recently due to a number of pioneering theoretical studies and remarkable experimental demonstrations of the exotic states of light in dielectric resonant photonic structures and metasurfaces, with the possibility to localize efficiently the electromagnetic fields of high intensities within small volumes of matter. These recent advances underpin novel concepts in nanophotonics, and provide a promisin…
By combining analytical and numerical approaches, we study resonantly enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) by individual high-index dielectric nanoparticles made of centrosymmetric materials. Considering both bulk and surface nonlinearities, we describe second-harmonic nonlinear scattering from a silicon nanoparticle optically excited in the vicinity of the magnetic and electric dipolar resonances. We discuss the contributions of different nonlinear sources, and the effect of the low-order optical Mie modes on the characteristics of the generated far-field. We demonstrate that the multipo…
Localized electromagnetic modes and negligible Ohmic losses dictate the growing interest in subwavelength all-dielectric nanoparticles. Although an exhaustive volume of study dealt with interaction of all-dielectric nanostructures with free-space electromagnetic fields, their performance as integrated photonics elements remains untackled. We present an experimental study of optical coupling between a resonant subwavelength silicon nanodisk and a non-resonant silicon waveguide, as probed by third harmonic generation microscopy. By placing the nanodisks at different distances from the waveguide,…
We study the behavior of resonant modes under variation of the distance between two coaxial dielectric disks and show an avoided crossing of resonances because of interaction between the disks. Owing to coaxial arrange of disks the consideration is separated by the azimuthal index $m=0, 1, 2, \ldots$. In the present paper we consider the case $m=0$. For a long enough distance the resonant modes can be classified as symmetric and antisymmetric hybridizations of the resonant modes of the isolated disk. With decreasing of the distance the interaction becomes stronger that gives rise to avoided cr…
We experimentally demonstrate that the next-nearest-neighbor(NNN)coupling in an array of waveguides can naturally be negative. To do so, dielectric zig-zag shaped waveguide arrays are fabricated with direct laser writing (DLW). By changing the angle of the zig-zag shape it is possible to tune between positive and negative ratios of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor coupling, which also allows to reduce the impact of the NNN-coupling to zero at the correct respective angle. We describe how the correct higher order coupling constants in tight-binding models can be derived, based on non-orthogona…
Recently a hypothesis explaining the non-resonant mechanism of subwavelength imaging granted by a dielectric microsphere has been suggested. In accordance to the hypothesis, the far-field image of a subwavelength scatterer strongly coupled to a microsphere by near fields is offered by the scatterer polarization normal to the sphere surface. The radiation of a closely located normally oriented dipole is shaped by the microsphere so that the transmitted wave beam has a practically flat phase front. Then this beam turns out to be imaging -- keeping the subwavelength information about the dipole l…

We propose a field-based design for dielectric antennas to interface diamond color centers with a Gaussian propagating far field. This antenna design enables an efficient spin-photon interface with a Purcell factor exceeding 400 and a 93% mode overlap to a 0.4 numerical aperture far-field Gaussian mode. The antenna design is robust to fabrication imperfections, such as variations in the dimensions of the dielectric perturbations and the emitter dipole location. The field-based dielectric antenna design provides an efficient free-space interface to closely packed arrays of quantum memories for …
All-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of nanostructured high-refractive-index materials, typically Si, are re-writing what is achievable in terms of the manipulation of light. Such devices support very strong magnetic, as well as electric, resonances, and are free of ohmic losses that severely limit the performance of their plasmonic counterparts. However, the functionality of dielectric-based metasurfaces is fixed-by-design, i.e. the optical response is fixed by the size, arrangement and index of the nanoresonators. A far wider range of applications could be addressed if active/rec…
A special kind of degeneracies known as the exceptional points (EPs), for resonant states on a dielectric periodic slab, are investigated. Due to their unique properties, EPs have found important applications in lasing, sensing, unidirectional operations, etc. In general, EPs may appear in non-Hermitian eigenvalue problems, including those related to PT-symmetric systems and those for open dielectric structures (due to the existence of radiation loss). In this paper, we study EPs on a simple periodic structure: a slab with a periodic array of gaps. Using an efficient numerical method, we calcu…
Effective refractive index of disordered all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of gallium phosphide (GaP) spheres is studied by means of three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations at the wavelength of 532~nm. It is shown that a mixture of the high index nanoparticles with sizes close to the first magnetic and electric resonances randomly dispersed on metasurface may possess negative refraction. The dependence of the metasurface effective refractive index on the nanoparticle concentration and size is constructed. The feasibility of negative refraction at large concentra…
