High-intensity laser fields acting on free electrons were proposed to create sufficiently large accelerations to enable detection of Unruh radiation. However, the currently achievable electron accelerations are not large enough. Here we demonstrate that Unruh effect in high-intensity laser fields is strongly enhanced near hyperbolic metamaterials, so that many orders of magnitude smaller accelerations may be used to detect Unruh radiation.
The Unruh effect is the prediction that an accelerating object perceives its surroundings as a bath of thermal radiation even if it accelerates in vacuum. The Unruh effect is believed to be very difficult to observe in the experiment, since an observer accelerating at g=9.8 m/s2 should see vacuum temperature of only 4x10^-20 K. Here we demonstrate that photons in metamaterial waveguides may behave as massive quasi-particles accelerating at up to 10^24 g, which is about twelve orders of magnitude larger than the surface acceleration near a stellar black hole. These record high accelerations may…
Here we demonstrate that photons launched into a specially designed metamaterial waveguide act as massive quasi-particles, which experience strong acceleration. Laser light propagating through such a waveguide may be used as a thermometer which would measure the Unruh temperature. Moreover, the metamaterial waveguide design may be approximated by a tapered optical waveguide.
It is well known that extraordinary photons in hyperbolic metamaterials may be described as living in an effective Minkowski spacetime, which is defined by the peculiar form of the strongly anisotropic dielectric tensor in these metamaterials. Here we demonstrate that within the scope of this approximation the sound waves in hyperbolic metamaterials look similar to gravitational waves, and therefore the quantized sound waves (phonons) look similar to gravitons. Such an analogue model of quantum gravity looks especially interesting near the phase transitions in hyperbolic metamaterials where it…
Optical space in electromagnetic metamaterials may be engineered to emulate various exotic space-time geometries. However, these metamaterial models are limited in many respects. It is believed that real physical space-time strongly fluctuates on the Planck scale. These fluctuations are usually described as virtual black holes. Static metamaterial models introduced so far do not exhibit similar behavior. Here we demonstrate that thermal fluctuations of optical space in hyperbolic metamaterials lead to creation of virtual electromagnetic black holes. This effect is very large if the dielectric …
Recently it was proposed that extraordinary light waves in hyperbolic metamaterials exhibit two times physics behavior (Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 067402, 2010). We report experimental observation of this effect via investigation of gravity-like nonlinear optics of iron/cobalt-based ferrofluid hyperbolic metamaterials. In addition to conventional temporal coordinate, the spatial coordinate oriented along the optical axis of the metamaterial also exhibits timelike character, which leads to very unusual two times physics behavior in these systems.
Recent theoretical and experimental work demonstrated that nonlinear optics of ferrofluid-based hyperbolic metamaterials exhibits very unusual 2+2-dimensional spatiotemporal dynamics. Here we report a detailed microscopic study of mutual interactions of individual self-focused optical filaments inside this metamaterial. In agreement with theoretical expectations, the observed mutual interactions of individual filaments exhibit strong similarities with general relativity in 2+1 dimensions. This observation is very important since 2+1-dimensional gravity is an exactly solvable theory even in the…
Extraordinary rays in a hyperbolic metamaterial behave as particle world lines in a three dimensional (2+1) Minkowski spacetime. We analyze electromagnetic field behavior at the boundaries of this effective spacetime depending on the boundary orientation. If the boundary is perpendicular to the space-like direction in the metamaterial, an effective Rindler horizon may be observed which produces Hawking radiation. On the other hand, if the boundary is perpendicular to the time-like direction an unusual physics situation is created, which can be called "the end of time". It appears that in the l…
Sub-wavelength confinement of light in nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterials due to formation of spatial solitons has attracted much recent attention because of its seemingly counter-intuitive behavior. In order to achieve self-focusing in a hyperbolic wire medium, a nonlinear self-defocusing Kerr medium must be used as a dielectric host. Here we demonstrate that this behavior finds natural explanation in terms of analogue gravity. Wave equation describing propagation of extraordinary light inside hyperbolic metamaterials exhibits 2+1 dimensional Lorentz symmetry. The role of time in the correspo…
Hyperbolic metamaterials were originally introduced to overcome the diffraction limit of optical imaging. Soon thereafter it was realized that hyperbolic metamaterials demonstrate a number of novel phenomena resulting from the broadband singular behavior of their density of photonic states. These novel phenomena and applications include super resolution imaging, new stealth technologies, enhanced quantum-electrodynamic effects, thermal hyperconductivity, superconductivity, and interesting gravitation theory analogues. Here we briefly review typical material systems, which exhibit hyperbolic be…
Recently we demonstrated that mapping of monochromatic extraordinary light distribution in a hyperbolic metamaterial along some spatial direction may model the flow of time and create an experimental toy model of the big bang. Here we extend this model to emulate cosmological inflation. This idea is illustrated in experiments performed with two-dimensional plasmonic hyperbolic metamaterials. Spatial dispersion which is always present in hyperbolic metamaterials results in scale-dependent (fractal) structure of the inflationary "metamaterial spacetime". This feature of our model replicates hypo…
Metamaterials have been already used to model various exotic "optical spaces". Here we demonstrate that mapping of monochromatic extraordinary light distribution in a hyperbolic metamaterial along some spatial direction may model the "flow of time". This idea is illustrated in experiments performed with plasmonic hyperbolic metamaterials. Appearance of the "statistical arrow of time" is examined in an experimental scenario which emulates a Big Bang-like event.
Extraordinary light rays propagating inside a hyperbolic metamaterial look similar to particle world lines in a 2+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime [1]. Magnetic nanoparticles in a ferrofluid are known to form nanocolumns aligned along the magnetic field, so that a hyperbolic metamaterial may be formed at large enough nanoparticle concentration nH. Here we investigate optical properties of such a metamaterial just below nH. While on average such a metamaterial is elliptical, thermal fluctuations of nanoparticle concentration lead to transient formation of hyperbolic regions (3D Minkowski space…
In the metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion (an array of silver nanowires in alumina membrane) we have observed six-fold reduction of the emission life-time of dye deposited onto the metamaterials surface. This serves as the evidence of the earlier predicted high density of photonic states in hyperbolic metamaterials.
Nanoscale slot waveguides of hyperbolic metamaterials are proposed and demonstrated for achieving large optical field enhancement. The dependence of the enhanced electric field within the air slot on waveguide mode coupling and permittivity tensors of hyperbolic metamaterials is analyzed both numerically and analytically. Optical intensity in the metamaterial slot waveguide can be more than 25 times stronger than that in a conventional silicon slot waveguide, due to tight optical mode confinement enabled by the ultrahigh refractive indices supported in hyperbolic metamaterials. The electric fi…
We demonstrate that high Tc superconductors exhibit hyperbolic metamaterial behavior in the far infrared and THz frequency ranges. In the THz range the hyperbolic behavior occurs only in the normal state, while no propagating modes exist in the superconducting state. Wave equation, which describes propagation of extraordinary light inside a hyperbolic metamaterial exhibits 2+1 dimensional Lorentz symmetry. The role of time in the corresponding effective 3D Minkowski spacetime is played by the spatial coordinate aligned perpendicular to the copper oxide layers. Such superconductor-based hyperbo…
Strongly anisotropic media with hyperbolic dispersion can be used for claddings of plasmonic waveguides. In order to analyze the fundamental properties of such waveguides, we analytically study 1D waveguides arranged of a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) in a HMM-Insulator-HMM (HIH) structure. We show that hyperbolic metamaterial claddings give flexibility in designing the properties of HIH waveguides. Our comparative study on 1D plasmonic waveguides reveals that HIH-type waveguides can have a higher performance than MIM or IMI waveguides.
We theoretically consider infrared-driven hyperbolic metamaterials able to spatially filtering terahertz radiation. The metamaterial is a slab made of alternating semiconductor and dielectric layers whose homogenized uniaxial response, at terahertz frequencies, shows principal permittivities of different signs. The gap provided by metamaterial hyperbolic dispersion allows the slab to stop spatial frequencies within a bandwidth tunable by changing the infrared radiation intensity. We numerically prove the device functionality by resorting to full wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charg…
In this work we develop a self-consistent approach for calculation of the Purcell factor and Lamb shift in highly dispersive hyperbolic metamaterial accounting for the effective dipole frequency shift. Also we theoretically predict the possibility of spontaneous topological transition, which occurs not due to the external change of the system parameters but only due to the Lamb shift.
We demonstrate that use of the field effect to tune the effective optical parameters of a layered hyperbolic metamaterial leads to topological transitions in its dispersion characteristics in the optical regime. Field effect gating electrically modulates the permittivity in transparent conductive oxides via changes in the carrier density. These permittivity changes lead to active extreme modulation of ~200% of the effective electromagnetic parameters along with active control of the anisotropic dispersion surface of hyperbolic metamaterials and enable the opening and closing of photonic band g…
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband enhancement of emission from nitrogen vacancy centers in nanodiamonds. The enhancement is achieved by using a multilayer metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion. The metamaterial is fabricated as a stack of alternating gold and alumina layers. Our approach paves the way towards the construction of efficient single-photon sources as planar on-chip devices.
We consider the plasmon polaritons along a layer of hyperbolic metamaterial propagating in the plane of the anisotropy axis with an arbitrary its orientation. As a layer material, we use periodic plane-layered artificial medium or hyperbolic metamaterial of thin metal and dielectric layers and produce its homogenization. The conditions for the existence of fast, slow, leakage, gliding flowing, forward and backward plasmon-polaritons are found. The Fresnel formulas for the diffraction of a plane wave of arbitrary polarization on such a structure are obtained. The dispersion of plasmon-polariton…
As demonstrated by Chernodub, vacuum in a strong magnetic field behaves as a periodic Abrikosov vortex lattice in a type-II superconductor. We investigate electromagnetic behavior of vacuum in this state. Since superconductivity is realized along the axis of magnetic field only, strong anisotropy of the vacuum dielectric tensor is observed. The diagonal components of the tensor are positive in the x and y directions perpendicular to the magnetic field, and negative in the z direction along the field. As a result, vacuum behaves as a hyperbolic metamaterial medium. If the magnetic field is cons…
We study super-Planckian near-field heat exchanges for multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials using exact S-matrix calculations. We investigate heat exchanges between two multilayer hyperbolic metamaterial structures. We show that the super- Planckian emission of such metamaterials can either come from the presence of surface phonon-polaritons modes or from a continuum of hyperbolic modes depending on the choice of composite materials as well as the structural configuration.
We analyze surface electromagnetic waves with hyperbolic dispersion supported at the interface between a semi-infinite isotropic medium and an effective uniaxial material. Apart from known types plasmons with hyperbolic dispersion curve, sometimes referred to as Dyakonov plasmons [Z. Jacob and E. E. Narimanov, APL 93, 221109 (2008)], we classify two new types of surface waves with hyperbolic dispersion. One type of such waves, in contrary to Dyakonov plasmons, does not require hyperbolic metamaterials to be involved. These hybrid-polarized plasmon modes with both TE and TM electromagnetic comp…
Dark energy with negative pressure and positive energy density is believed to be responsible for the accelerated expansion of the universe. Quite a few theoretical models of dark energy are based on tachyonic fields interacting with itself and normal (bradyonic) matter. Here we propose an experimental model of tachyonic dark energy based on hyperbolic metamaterials. Wave equation describing propagation of extraordinary light inside hyperbolic metamaterials exhibits 2+1 dimensional Lorentz symmetry. The role of time in the corresponding effective 3D Minkowski spacetime is played by the spatial …
Coherent nanoscale photon sources are of paramount importance to achieving all-optical communication. Several nanolasers smaller than the diffraction limit have been theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated using plasmonic cavities to confine optical fields. Such compact cavities exhibit large Purcell factors, thereby enhancing spontaneous emission, which feeds into the lasing mode. However, most plasmonic nanolasers reported so far have employed resonant nanostructures and therefore had the lasing restricted to the proximity of the resonance wavelength. Here, we report on an app…
We study the formation of second harmonic double-resonance cones in hyperbolic metamaterials. An electric dipole on the surface of the structure induces second harmonic light to propagate into two distinct volume plasmon-polariton channels: A signal that propagates within its own peculiar resonance cone; and a phase-locked signal that is trapped under the pump's resonance cone. Metamaterial dispersion and birefringence induce a large angular divergence between the two volume plasmon-polaritons, making these structures ideal for subwavelength second and higher harmonic imaging microscopy.
Chalcogenide glasses are exceptional materials that show a wide contrast in optical properties upon phase change and are highly researched for reconfigurable electronic and nanophotonic devices. Here, we report the first proof-of-concept demonstration of a non-volatile, switchable hyperbolic metamaterial based on a chalcogenide glass. By using the $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ (GST) alloy as one of the components of a multilayered nanocomposite structure and exploiting its phase change property, we demonstrate a hyperbolic metamaterial in which the Type-I hyperbolic dispersion $(ε_{\perp} < 0, ε_{\para…
Stimulated emission depletion microscopy inspired direct laser writing (STED-DLW) processes can offer diffraction-unlimited fabrication of 3D-structures, not possible with traditional electron-beam or optical lithography. We propose a hyperbolic metamaterial for fabrication with STED-DLW. First, we design meandering wire structures with three different magnetic dipoles which can be excited under different incidences of light. Then, based on effective parameters corresponding to normal incidence and lateral incidence, we find that the hyperbolic dispersion relation for five-layer structure appe…
Coulomb interaction of charges in a metamaterial may be expressed via its effective dielectric response function. Coulomb interaction appears considerably enhanced in artificially engineered epsilon near zero (ENZ) and hyperbolic metamaterials. Indeed, very recently it was observed that negative ENZ conditions enhance superconducting properties of a composite metamaterial via enhancement of Cooper pairing. Here we demonstrate that positive ENZ conditions enhance Coulomb repulsion of charges, leading to considerable enhancement of the Coulomb blockade effect in such metamaterials. Similar to hi…
A numerical study of the features of the scattering of incident radiation at a periodically modulated hyperbolic metamaterial boundary was carried out. We have found optimal - sawtooth-shaped profile of the interface which provides minimal reflection. It is shown that at a certain orientation of the optical axes of the metamaterial, a subwave localization of the field occurs at the saw-tooth interface. An approximate analytical expression for the eigenmode was found. A generalization of the numerical method is implemented for calculating fields, based on the application of the Green's second i…
Recent advances in hyperbolic metamaterials have spurred many breakthroughs in the field of manipulating light propagation. However, the unusual electromagnetic properties also put extremely high demands on its compositional materials. Limited by the finite relative permittivity of the natural materials, the effective permittivity of the constructed hyperbolic metamaterials is also confined to a narrow range. Here, based on the proposed concept of structure-induced spoof surface plasmon, we prove that arbitrary materials can be selected to construct the hyperbolic metamaterials with independen…
Hyperbolic metamaterials, horizontally stacked metal and dielectric multilayer, have recently been studied as a platform to observe optical spin Hall effect. However, the large optical spin Hall effect in the horizontal hyperbolic metamaterials accompanies extremely low transmission, which obstructs its practical applications. Reducing the sample thickness to augment the transmission causes diminishment of the shift. In this letter, we demonstrate that a vertical hyperbolic metamaterial can enhance the shift by several orders of magnitude in comparison to the shift of its horizontal counterpar…
A switchable hyperbolic material (SHM) is investigated, with which one can turn on or off the hyperbolic dispersion of the material via magnetic control. The SHM has simple structure, with a one-dimensional periodic stacking of dielectric layer and gyromagnetic layer. The hyperbolic dispersion of SHM is due to the negative effective permeability of gyromagnetic layers, and it can be transformed into a regular circular dispersion when the d.c. magnetic field is switched off. This switchable dispersion transition is reversible, which may have great potential applications in many fields.
The metamaterial is proposed which supports a mixture of three or more normal and backward electromagnetic modes with equal co-directed phase velocities and mutually contra-directed energy fluxes. This enables extraordinary three-wave mixing, greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification and frequency-changing generation of entangled photons in the reflection direction. Proof-of-principle numerical simulation of such processes is presented based on the particular example of the wave-guided THz waves contra-propagating in the metamaterial made of carbon nanotubes.
We develop the fluctuational electrodynamics of metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion and show the existence of broadband thermal emission beyond the black body limit in the near field. This arises due to the thermal excitation of unique bulk metamaterial modes, which do not occur in conventional media. We consider a practical realization of the hyperbolic metamaterial and estimate that the effect will be observable using the characteristic dispersion (topological transitions) of the metamaterial states. Our work paves the way for engineering the near-field thermal emission using metamateri…
We review the properties of hyperbolic metamaterials and show that they are promising candidates as substrates for nano-imaging, nano-sensing, fluorescence engineering and for controlling thermal emission. Hyperbolic metamaterials can support unique bulk modes, tunable surface plasmon polaritons as well as surface hyperbolic states (Dyakonov plasmons) that can be used for a variety of applications. We compare the effective medium predictions with practical realizations of hyperbolic metamaterials to show their potential for radiative decay engineering, bio-imaging, sub-surface sensing, meta-pl…
We show that nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond can produce a novel quantum hyperbolic metamaterial. We demonstrate that a hyperbolic dispersion relation in diamond with NV centers can be engineered and dynamically tuned by applying a magnetic field. This quantum hyperbolic metamaterial with a tunable window for the negative refraction allows for the construction of a superlens beyond the diffraction limit. In addition to subwavelength imaging, this NV-metamaterial can be used in spontaneous emission enhancement, heat transport and acoustics, analogue cosmology, and lifetime engineering.…
Hyperbolic plasmonic metamaterials provide numerous opportunities for designing unusual linear and nonlinear optical properties. We show that the modal overlap of fundamental and second-harmonic light in an anisotropic plasmonic metamaterial slab results in the broadband enhancement of radiated second-harmonic intensity by up to 2 orders of magnitudes for TM- and TE-polarized fundamental light, compared to a smooth Au film under TM-polarised illumination. The results open up possibilities to design tuneable frequency-doubling metamaterial with the goal to overcome limitations associated with c…
Modern advances in transformation optics and electromagnetic metamaterials made possible experimental demonstrations of highly unusual curvilinear optical spaces, such as various geometries necessary for electromagnetic cloaking. Recently we demonstrated that mapping light intensity in a hyperbolic metamaterial may also model the flow of time in an effective (2+1) dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Curving such an effective spacetime creates experimental model of a toy big bang. Here we demonstrate that at low light levels this model may be used to emulate a fully covariant version of quantum me…
We derive the energy density associated with an electromagnetic wave passing through a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM). Both types of HMMs are studied. By considering a dispersive and absorbing HMM as an effective uniaxial crystal, we find that under the influence of an electromagnetic wave, the response of type I (type II) HMM in the directions perpendicular to and parallel to the optical axis are similar to those of Lorentz (Drude) and Drude (Lorentz) media, respectively. Numerical examples are presented to reveal the general characteristics of the direction-dependent energy storage capacity o…
We explore broadband, wide-angle mid-infrared rectification based on nanopatterned hyperbolic metamaterials (HMM), composed of two dissimilar metals separated by a sub-nanometer tunnel barrier. The exotic slow-light modes supported by such periodically trenched HMMs efficiently trap incident radiation in massively parallel metal-insulator-metal tunnel junctions supporting ultrafast optical rectification induced by photon-assisted tunneling. This leads to highly efficient photon-to-electron conversion, orders of magnitude larger than conventional rectennas. Our results promise an impact on infr…
A metamaterial made by stacked hole-array layers known as a fishnet metamaterial behaves as a hyperbolic metamaterial at wavelength much longer than hole-array period. However, the analytical formulae of effective parameters of a fishnet metamaterial have not been reported hindering the design of deep-subwavelength imaging devices using this structure. We report the new closed-form formulae of effective parameters comprising anisotropic dispersion relation of a fishnet metamaterial working at terahertz or microwave frequency. These effective parameters of a fishnet metamaterial are consistent …
In this paper we demonstrate that asymmetric hyperbolic metamaterials (AHM) can produce strongly directive thermal emission in far-field zone, which exceeds Planck's limit. Asymmetry is inherent in an uniaxial medium, whose optical axes are tilted with respect to medium interfaces and appears as a difference in properties of waves, propagating upward and downward with respect to the interface. It's known that a high density of states (DOS) for certain photons takes place in usual hyperbolic metamaterials, but emission of them into a smaller number in vacuum is preserved by the total internal r…
We show that the near-field functionality of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMM), typically proposed for increasing the photonic local density of states (LDOS), can be achieved with thin metal films. Although HMMs have an infinite density of internally-propagating plane-wave states, the external coupling to nearby emitters is severely restricted. We show analytically that properly designed thin films, of thicknesses comparable to the metal size of a hyperbolic metamaterial, yield a LDOS as high as (if not higher than) that of HMMs. We illustrate these ideas by performing exact numerical computation…
We show that nanosphere dispersed liquid crystal (NDLC) metamaterial can be characterized in near IR spectral region as an indefinite medium whose real parts of effective ordinary and extraordinary permittivities are opposite in signs. Based on this fact we design a novel electrooptic effect: external electric field driven switch between normal refraction, negative refraction and reflection of TM incident electromagnetic wave from the boundary vacuum/NDLC. A detailed analysis of its functionality is given based on effective medium theory combined with a study of negative refraction in anisotro…
The active and nonlinear graphene properties are limited due to weak light matter interaction between the ultrathin graphene and the incident light. In this work, we present enhanced nonlinear effects at the low terahertz (THz) range by designing a new patterned graphene hyperbolic metamaterial (GHMM). More specifically, it is demonstrated that the third harmonic generation (THG) can be significantly enhanced by the proposed GHMM due to the field enhancement at the resonance as well as the supported slow light response that fosters strong light matter interaction.
Semiconductor-based layered hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) house high-wavevector volume plasmon polariton (VPP) modes in the infrared spectral range. VPP modes have successfully been exploited in the weak-coupling regime through the enhanced Purcell effect. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate strong coupling between the VPP modes in a semiconductor HMM and the intersubband transition of epitaxially-embedded quantum wells. We observe clear anticrossings in the dispersion curves for the zeroth-, first-, second-, and third-order VPP modes, resulting in upper and lower polariton branches…
We present how to physically realize the auxiliary source described in the recently introduced active plasmon injection loss compensation scheme for enhanced near-field superlensing. Particularly, we show that the characteristics of the auxiliary source described in the active plasmon injection scheme including tunable narrow-band and selective amplification via convolution can be realized by using a hyperbolic metamaterial functioning as a near-field spatial filter. Besides loss compensation, the proposed near-field spatial filter can be useful for real-time high resolution edge detection.
We theoretically study the propagation of large-wavevector waves (volume plasmon polaritons) in multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials with two levels of structuring. We show that when the parameters of a subwavelength metal-dielectric multilayer ("substructure") are modulated ("superstructured") on a larger, wavelength scale, the propagation of volume plasmon polaritons in the resulting multiscale hyperbolic metamaterials is subject to photonic band gap phenomena. A great degree of control over such plasmons can be exerted by varying the superstructure geometry. When this geometry is periodic, s…
We explore the near-field radiative thermal energy transfer properties of hyperbolic metamaterials. The presence of unique electromagnetic states in a broad bandwidth leads to super-planckian thermal energy transfer between metamaterials separated by a nano-gap. We consider practical phonon-polaritonic metamaterials for thermal engineering in the mid-infrared range and show that the effect exists in spite of the losses, absorption and finite unit cell size. For thermophotovoltaic energy conversion applications requiring energy transfer in the near-infrared range we introduce high temperature h…
Hyperbolic Metamaterials (HMMs) have recently garnered much attention because they possess the ability for broadband manipulation of the photon density of states and sub-wavelength light confinement. These exceptional properties arise due to the excitation of electromagnetic states with high momentum (high-k modes). However, a major hindrance to practical applications of HMMs is the difficulty in coupling light out of these modes because they become evanescent at the surface of the metamaterial. Here we report the first demonstration of out-coupling of high-k modes in an active HMM using a hig…
We study the Compton scattering of light by free electrons inside a hyperbolic medium. We demonstrate that the unconventional dispersion and local density of states of the electromagnetic modes in such media can lead to a giant Compton shift and dramatic enhancement of the scattering cross section. We develop an universal approach for the study of coupled multi-photon processes in nanostructured media and derive the spectral intensity function of the scattered radiation for realistic metamaterial structures. We predict the Compton shift of the order of a few meVs for the infrared spectrum that…
Photonic spin Hall effect in transmission is a transverse beam shift of the out-coming beam depending on polarization of the in-coming beam. The effect can be significantly enhanced by materials with high anisotropy. We report the first experimental demonstration of the photonic spin Hall effect in a multilayer hyperbolic metamaterial at visible wavelengths (wavelengths of 520 nm and 633 nm). The metamaterial is composed of alternating layers of gold and alumina with deeply-subwavelength thicknesses, exhibiting extremely large anisotropy. The angle resolved polarimetric measurements showed the…
Hyperbolic Metamaterials (HMMs) have recently garnered much attention because they possess the ability for broadband manipulation of the photon density of states and sub-wavelength light confinement. However, a major difficulty arises with the coupling of light out of HMMs due to strong confinement of the electromagnetic field in states with high momentum called high-k modes which become evanescent outside the structure. Here we report the first demonstration of directional out-coupling of light from high-k modes in an active HMM using a high index bulls-eye grating. Quantum dots (QDs) embedde…
Control of the electromagnetic waves in nano-scale structured materials is central to the development of next generation photonic circuits and devices. In this context, hyperbolic metamaterials, where elliptical isofrequency surfaces are morphed into surfaces with exotic hyperbolic topologies when the structure parameters are tuned, have shown unprecedented control over light propagation and interaction. Here we show that such topological transitions can be even more unusual when the hyperbolic metamaterial is endowed with nonreciprocity. Judicious design of metamaterials with reduced spatial …
Metamaterials are nano-engineered media with designed properties beyond those available in nature with applications in all aspects of materials science. In particular, metamaterials have shown promise for next generation of optical materials with electromagnetic responses that cannot be obtained from conventional media. We review the fundamental properties of metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion and present the various applications where such media offer potential for transformative impact. These artificial materials support unique bulk electromagnetic states which can tailor light-matter …
