The binary properties of open clusters place crucial constraints on star formation theory and clusters' dynamical evolution. We develop a comprehensive approach that models the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the cluster members as the mixture of single stars and photometric unresolved binaries. This method enables us to infer the binary properties, including the binary fraction $f_\mathrm{b}$ and binary mass-ratio distribution index $γ_q$ when a power-law is assumed, with high accuracy and precision, which were unfeasible in conventional methods. We employ a modified Gaussian process to determine the main sequence ridge line and its scatter from the observed CMD as model input. As a first example, we apply the method to the open cluster NGC3532 with the Gaia DR2 photometry. For the cluster members within a magnitude range corresponding to FGK dwarfs, we obtain $f_\mathrm{b} = 0.267\pm0.019$ and $γ_q = - 0.10\pm0.22$ for binaries with mass ratio $q > 0.2$. The $f_\mathrm{b}$ value is consistent with the previous work on NGC3532 and smaller than that of field stars. The close to zero $γ_q$ indicates that the mass ratios of binaries follow a nearly uniform distribution. For the first time, we unveil that the stars with smaller mass or in the inner region tend to have lower $f_\mathrm{b}$ and more positive value of $γ_q$ due to the lack of low mass-ratio binaries. The clear dependences of binary properties on mass and radius are most likely caused by the internal dynamics.
The observable spectrum of an unresolved binary star system is a superposition of two single-star spectra. Even without a detectable velocity offset between the two stellar components, the combined spectrum of a binary system is in general different from that of either component, and fitting it with single-star models may yield inaccurate stellar parameters and abundances. We perform simple experiments with synthetic spectra to investigate the effect of unresolved main-sequence binaries on spectral fitting, modeling spectra similar to those collected by the APOGEE, GALAH, and LAMOST surveys. The identification of binary stars of different mass ratios in resolved stellar populations is a challenging task. We show how the photometric diagram constructed with the pseudo-colors (H-W2)-W1 vs W2-(BP-K) can be employed to estimate the binary and multiple star ratios and the distribution of their component mass ratio $q$ effectively. As an application, we investigate the Pleiades star cluster in the range of primary component mass between 0.5 and 1.8 $M_{\odot}$. The binary star ratio is found to be between 0.54$\pm$0.11 and 0.70$\pm$0.14. On the other hand, the ratio of systems with mult…
High-precision kinematic studies of globular clusters require an accurate knowledge of all possible sources of contamination. Amongst other sources, binary stars can introduce systematic biases in the kinematics. Using a set of Monte Carlo cluster simulations with different concentrations and binary fractions, we investigate the effect of unresolved binaries on proper-motion dispersion profiles, treating the simulations like HST proper-motion samples. Since globular clusters evolve towards a state of partial energy equipartition, more massive stars lose energy and decrease their velocity dispe…
In this study, we continue our project to search for unresolved binary and multiple systems in open clusters exploiting the photometric diagram (H-W2)-W1 vs W2-(BP-K) firstly introduced in \citet{Malofeeva+2022}. In particular, here we estimate the binary and multiple star ratios and the distribution of the component mass ratio $q$ in the Galactic clusters Alpha Persei, Praesepe, and NGC 1039. We have modified the procedure outlined in our first study \citep{Malofeeva+2022} making star counts automatic and by introducing bootstrapping for error estimation. Basing on this, we re-investigated th…
For stars with unresolved companions, motions of the centre of light and that of mass decouple, causing a single-source astrometric model to perform poorly. We show that such stars can be easily detected with the reduced chi2 statistic, or RUWE, provided as part of Gaia DR2. We convert RUWE into the amplitude of the image centroid wobble, which, if scaled by the source distance, is proportional to the physical separation between companions (for periods up to several years). We test this idea on a sample of known spectroscopic binaries and demonstrate that the amplitude of the centroid perturba…

Modelling dust formation in single stars evolving through the carbon-star stage of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) reproduces well the mid-infrared colours and magnitudes of most of the C-rich sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), apart from a small subset of extremely red objects (EROs). The analysis of EROs spectral energy distribution suggests the presence of large quantities of dust, which demand gas densities in the outflow significantly higher than expected from theoretical modelling. We propose that binary interaction mechanisms that involve common envelope (CE) evolution could…
We will discuss the evolution of star clusters with an large initial binary fraction, up to 95%. The initial binary population is chosen to follow the invariant orbital-parameter distributions suggested by Kroupa (1995). The Monte Carlo MOCCA simulations of star cluster evolution are compared to the observations of Milone et al. (2012) for photometric binaries. It is demonstrated that the observed dependence on cluster mass of both the binary fraction and the ratio of the binary fractions inside and outside of the half mass radius are well recovered by the MOCCA simulations. This is due to a r…

We introduce a new model for the accretion and feedback of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries to the KETJU code, which enables us to resolve the evolution of SMBH binaries down to separations of tens of Schwarzschild radii in gas-rich galaxy mergers. Our subgrid binary accretion model extends the widely used Bondi--Hoyle--Lyttleton accretion into the binary phase and incorporates preferential mass accretion onto the secondary SMBH, which is motivated by results from small-scale hydrodynamical circumbinary disc simulations. We perform idealised gas-rich disc galaxy merger simulations using…
The high-quality OmegaCAM photometry of the 3x3 deg around the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in r, and i filters by Beccari et al.(2017) revealed three well-separated pre-main sequences in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). The objects belonging to the individual sequences are concentrated towards the center of the ONC. The authors concluded that there are two competitive scenarios: a population of unresolved binaries and triples with an exotic mass ratio distribution, or three stellar populations with different ages. We use Gaia DR2 in combination with the photometric OmegaCAM catalog to test an…
We present a new method for probabilistic generative modelling of stellar colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to infer the frequency of binary stars and their mass-ratio distribution. The method invokes a mixture model to account for overlapping populations of single stars, binaries and outliers in the CMD. We apply the model to Gaia observations of the old open cluster, M67, and find a frequency $f_B(q > 0.5) = 0.258 \pm 0.019$ for binary stars with mass ratio greater than 0.5. The form of the mass-ratio distribution function rises towards higher mass ratios for $q > 0.3$.
The population statistics of binary stars are an important output of star formation models. However populations of wide binaries evolve over time due to interactions within a system's birth environment and the unfolding of wide, hierarchical triple systems. Hence the wide binary populations observed in star forming regions or OB associations may not accurately reflect the wide binary populations that will eventually reach the field. We use Gaia DR2 data to select members of three open clusters, Alpha~Per, the Pleiades and Praesepe and to flag cluster members that are likely unresolved binaries…
Binary stars play a vital role in astrophysical research, as a good fraction of stars are in binaries. Binary fraction (BF) is known to change with stellar mass in the Galactic field, but such studies in clusters require binary identification and membership information. Here, we estimate the total and spectral-type-wise high mass-ratio (HMR) BF ($f^{0.6}$) in 23 open clusters using unresolved binaries in color-magnitude diagrams using \textit{Gaia} DR2 data. We introduce the segregation index (SI) parameter to trace mass segregation of HMR (total and mass-wise) binaries and the reference popul…
Observations found that star clusters contain a large fraction of binaries. Tight binaries are an important heating source that influences the long-term dynamical evolution of star clusters. However, due to the limitation of $N$-body tool, previous theoretical modelling for globular clusters (GCs) by using direct $N$-body simulations have not investigated how a large fraction of primordial binaries affect their long-term evolution. In this work, by using the high-performance $N$-body code, PeTar, we carry out star-by-star models for intermediate massive GCs ($N=100000$) with the primordial bin…

Among the properties shaping the light of a galaxy, the star formation history (SFH) is one of the most challenging to model due to the variety of correlated physical processes regulating star formation. In this work, we leverage the stellar population synthesis model FSPS, together with SFHs predicted by the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG and the empirical model UNIVERSEMACHINE, to study the impact of star formation variability on galaxy colours. We start by introducing a model-independent metric to quantify the burstiness of a galaxy formation model, and we use this metric to demonst…
We report a detailed modelling of soft X-ray emission lines from two stellar-wind fed Galactic high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems, Cyg X-3 and 4U 1538-522, and estimate physical parameters, e.g., hydrogen density, radiation field, chemical abundances, wind velocity, etc. The spectral synthesis code CLOUDY is utilized for this modelling. We model highly ionised X-ray spectral lines such as Fe XXV (6.700 keV), Fe XXVI (6.966 keV), and reproduce the observed line flux values. We find that for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538-522, the inner radius of the ionised gas is at a distance of 10$^{12.25}$ cm and …
