The high-pressure properties of fluorine and chlorine are not yet well understood because both are highly reactive and volatile elements, which has made conducting diamond anvil cell and x-ray diffraction experiments a challenge. Here we use ab initio methods to search for stable crystal structures of both elements at megabar pressures. We demonstrate how symmetry and geometric constraints can be combined to efficiently generate crystal structures that are composed of diatomic molecules. Our algorithm extends the symmetry driven structure search method [Phys. Rev. B 98 (2018) 174107] by adding constraints for the bond length and the number of atoms in a molecule, while still maintaining generality. As a method of validation, we have tested our approach for dense hydrogen and reproduced the known molecular structures of Cmca-12 and Cmca-4. We apply our algorithm to study chlorine and fluorine in the pressure range from 10--4000 GPa while considering crystal structures with up to 40 atoms per unit cell. We predict chlorine to follow the same series of phase transformations as elemental iodine from Cmca to Immm to Fm$\bar{3}$m, but at substantially higher pressures. We predict fluorine to transition from a C2/c to an Cmca structure at 70 GPa, to a novel orthorhombic and metallic structure with P$4_2$/mmc symmetry at 2500 GPa, and finally into its cubic analogue form with Pm$\bar{3}$n symmetry at 3000 GPa.
In this work, we employed \textit{ab initio} methods combined with evolutionary algorithms for searching stable structures for fluorine in the terapascal (TPa) regime. We performed several structural searches using the USPEX code, at pressures that spanned from 1 to 5 TPa and considered up to 16 atoms per cell for selected pressures. Our findings partially support recent studies by validating the transformation of fluorine from a molecular form, $Cmca$, into an intermediate polymeric form before its eventual dissociation. In fact, the enthalpy comparisons between candidate structures of fluori…
The high cost of platinum-based catalysts has hampered the commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Hence, the electronic structure and oxygen reduction ability of [Ti(IV)Pc]2+, Ti(II)Pc titanyl-phthalocyanines, and their tailored peripheral and axial ligand complexes were theoretically investigated to determine non-precious cathode catalysts. Our results revealed that the peripherally substituted and unsubstituted Ti(II)Pc triplet complexes can spontaneously reduce peroxide. The singlet [Ti(IV)Pc]2+ parent complex has a 6.45 eV barrier. However, fluorine substitu…
HCl, a 'textbook' example of a polar covalent molecule, is a well-known compound of hydrogen and chlorine. Inspired by the discovery of unexpected stable stoichiometries of sodium chlorides, we performed systematic searches for all stable compounds in the H-Cl system from ambient pressure to higher pressures up to 500 GPa using variable-composition ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX. We found several compounds that are stable under pressure, i.e. HCl, H$_2$Cl, H$_3$Cl, H$_5$Cl and H$_4$Cl$_7$, which display a rich variety of chemical bonding types. At ambient pressure, H$_2$, Cl$_2$ and HC…

Alkali halides $MX$, have been viewed as typical ionic compounds, characterized by 1:1 ratio necessary for charge balance between M$^+$ and X$^-$. It was proposed that group I elements like Cs can be oxidized further under high pressure. Here we perform a comprehensive study for the CsF-F system at pressures up to 100 GPa, and find extremely versatile chemistry. A series of CsF$_n$ ($n$ $\geq$ 1) compounds are predicted to be stable already at ambient pressure. Under pressure, 5$p$ electrons in Cs atoms become active, with growing tendency to form Cs$^{3+}$ and Cs$^{5+}$ valence states at fluo…
(BEDT-TFF)$_2$I$_3$ charge transfer salts are reported to show superconductivity and pressure induced quasi two-dimensional Dirac cones at the Fermi level. By performing state of the art ab initio calculations in the framework of density functional theory, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of the three structural phases $α$, $β$ and $κ$. \edit{We furthermore report about the irreducible representations of the corresponding electronic band structures, symmetry of their crystal structure, and discuss the origin of band crossings. Additionally, we discuss the chemically indu…
We present a combined experimental and computational first-principles study of the superionic and structural properties of CaF2 at high P-T conditions. We observe an anomalous superionic behavior in the low-P fluorite phase that consists in a decrease of the normal-> superionic critical temperature with compression. This unexpected effect can be explained in terms of a P-induced softening of a zone-boundary $X$ phonon which involves exclusively fluorine displacements. Also we find that superionic conductivity is absent in the high-P cotunnite phase. Instead, superionicity develops in a new low…
A comparative computational study of stability of candidate structures for an as yet unknown silver dichloride AgCl2 is presented. It is found that all considered candidates have a negative enthalpy of formation, but are unstable towards charge transfer and decomposition into silver(I) chloride and chlorine within the DFT and hybrid DFT approaches in the entire studied pressure range. Within SCAN approach, several of the true AgIICl2 polymorphs (i.e. containing Ag(II) species) exhibit a region of stability below ca. 20 GPa. However, their stability with respect to aforementioned decomposition …
The high pressure phases of HBr are explored with an ab initio crystal structure search. By taking into account the contribution of zero-point energy (ZPE), we find that the P4/nmm phase of HBr is thermodynamically stable in the pressure range from 150 to 200 GPa. The superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of P4/nmm HBr is evaluated to be around 73 K at 170 GPa, which is the highest record so far among binary halogen hydrides. Its Tc can be further raised to around 95K under 170 GPa if half of the bromine atoms in the P4/nmm HBr are substituted by the lighter chlorine atoms. Our study shows…

A novel stable crystallographic structure is discovered in a variety of ABO3, ABF3 and A2O3 compounds (including materials of geological relevance, prototypes of multiferroics, exhibiting strong spin-orbit effects, etc...), via the use of first principles. This novel structure appears under hydrostatic pressure, and is the first "post-post-perovskite" phase to be found. It provides a successful solution to experimental puzzles in important systems, and is characterized by one-dimensional chains linked by group of two via edge-sharing oxygen/fluorine octahedra. Such unprecedented organization a…
We report the effects of low-temperature postannealing on the structural and superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ca-free double-layered cuprate, Sr$_2$SrCu$_2$O$_{4+y}$F$_{2-y}$. Although the as-synthesized sample prepared under high pressure has a tetragonal structure with a rock-salt-type blocking layer (the so-called $T$-phase), we found that the symmetry of the structure lowered to that of an orthorhombic system when annealed with CuF$_2$. The structural refinements reveal that such a topochemical reaction leads not only to the removal of excess O$^{2-}$ from the apical s…
