While recent neural sequence-to-sequence models have greatly improved the quality of speech synthesis, there has not been a system capable of fast training, fast inference and high-quality audio synthesis at the same time. We propose a student-teacher network capable of high-quality faster-than-real-time spectrogram synthesis, with low requirements on computational resources and fast training time. We show that self-attention layers are not necessary for generation of high quality audio. We utilize simple convolutional blocks with residual connections in both student and teacher networks and use only a single attention layer in the teacher model. Coupled with a MelGAN vocoder, our model's voice quality was rated significantly higher than Tacotron 2. Our model can be efficiently trained on a single GPU and can run in real time even on a CPU. We provide both our source code and audio samples in our GitHub repository.
In this paper we propose Flowtron: an autoregressive flow-based generative network for text-to-speech synthesis with control over speech variation and style transfer. Flowtron borrows insights from IAF and revamps Tacotron in order to provide high-quality and expressive mel-spectrogram synthesis. Flowtron is optimized by maximizing the likelihood of the training data, which makes training simple and stable. Flowtron learns an invertible mapping of data to a latent space that can be manipulated to control many aspects of speech synthesis (pitch, tone, speech rate, cadence, accent). Our mean opi…
We propose prosody embeddings for emotional and expressive speech synthesis networks. The proposed methods introduce temporal structures in the embedding networks, thus enabling fine-grained control of the speaking style of the synthesized speech. The temporal structures can be designed either on the speech side or the text side, leading to different control resolutions in time. The prosody embedding networks are plugged into end-to-end speech synthesis networks and trained without any other supervision except for the target speech for synthesizing. It is demonstrated that the prosody embeddin…

Speech synthesis is one of the challenging tasks to automate by deep learning, also being a low-resource language there are very few attempts at Bangla speech synthesis. Most of the existing works can't work with anything other than simple Bangla characters script, very short sentences, etc. This work attempts to solve these problems by introducing Byakta, the first-ever open-source deep learning-based bilingual (Bangla and English) text to a speech synthesis system. A speech recognition model-based automated scoring metric was also proposed to evaluate the performance of a TTS model. We also …
We introduce the first unsupervised speech synthesis system based on a simple, yet effective recipe. The framework leverages recent work in unsupervised speech recognition as well as existing neural-based speech synthesis. Using only unlabeled speech audio and unlabeled text as well as a lexicon, our method enables speech synthesis without the need for a human-labeled corpus. Experiments demonstrate the unsupervised system can synthesize speech similar to a supervised counterpart in terms of naturalness and intelligibility measured by human evaluation.

In this work, we extend ClariNet (Ping et al., 2019), a fully end-to-end speech synthesis model (i.e., text-to-wave), to generate high-fidelity speech from multiple speakers. To model the unique characteristic of different voices, low dimensional trainable speaker embeddings are shared across each component of ClariNet and trained together with the rest of the model. We demonstrate that the multi-speaker ClariNet outperforms state-of-the-art systems in terms of naturalness, because the whole model is jointly optimized in an end-to-end manner.

This paper integrates a classic mel-cepstral synthesis filter into a modern neural speech synthesis system towards end-to-end controllable speech synthesis. Since the mel-cepstral synthesis filter is explicitly embedded in neural waveform models in the proposed system, both voice characteristics and the pitch of synthesized speech are highly controlled via a frequency warping parameter and fundamental frequency, respectively. We implement the mel-cepstral synthesis filter as a differentiable and GPU-friendly module to enable the acoustic and waveform models in the proposed system to be simulta…
Speech synthesis might hold the key to low-resource speech recognition. Data augmentation techniques have become an essential part of modern speech recognition training. Yet, they are simple, naive, and rarely reflect real-world conditions. Meanwhile, speech synthesis techniques have been rapidly getting closer to the goal of achieving human-like speech. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using synthesized speech as a form of data augmentation to lower the resources necessary to build a speech recognizer. We experiment with three different kinds of synthesizers: statistical param…

Although there are more than 6,500 languages in the world, the pronunciations of many phonemes sound similar across the languages. When people learn a foreign language, their pronunciation often reflects their native language's characteristics. This motivates us to investigate how the speech synthesis network learns the pronunciation from datasets from different languages. In this study, we are interested in analyzing and taking advantage of multilingual speech synthesis network. First, we train the speech synthesis network bilingually in English and Korean and analyze how the network learns t…
Neural speech synthesis models have recently demonstrated the ability to synthesize high quality speech for text-to-speech and compression applications. These new models often require powerful GPUs to achieve real-time operation, so being able to reduce their complexity would open the way for many new applications. We propose LPCNet, a WaveRNN variant that combines linear prediction with recurrent neural networks to significantly improve the efficiency of speech synthesis. We demonstrate that LPCNet can achieve significantly higher quality than WaveRNN for the same network size and that high q…

State-of-the-art Variational Auto-Encoders (VAEs) for learning disentangled latent representations give impressive results in discovering features like pitch, pause duration, and accent in speech data, leading to highly controllable text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. However, these LSTM-based VAEs fail to learn latent clusters of speaker attributes when trained on either limited or noisy datasets. Further, different latent variables start encoding the same features, limiting the control and expressiveness during speech synthesis. To resolve these issues, we propose RTI-VAE (Reordered Transformer …
A text-to-speech (TTS) model typically factorizes speech attributes such as content, speaker and prosody into disentangled representations.Recent works aim to additionally model the acoustic conditions explicitly, in order to disentangle the primary speech factors, i.e. linguistic content, prosody and timbre from any residual factors, such as recording conditions and background noise. This paper proposes unsupervised, interpretable and fine-grained noise and prosody modeling. We incorporate adversarial training, representation bottleneck and utterance-to-frame modeling in order to learn frame-l…
Modern neural text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis can generate speech that is indistinguishable from natural speech. However, the prosody of generated utterances often represents the average prosodic style of the database instead of having wide prosodic variation. Moreover, the generated prosody is solely defined by the input text, which does not allow for different styles for the same sentence. In this work, we train a sequence-to-sequence neural network conditioned on acoustic speech features to learn a latent prosody space with intuitive and meaningful dimensions. Experiments show that a model c…
As an indispensable part of modern human-computer interaction system, speech synthesis technology helps users get the output of intelligent machine more easily and intuitively, thus has attracted more and more attention. Due to the limitations of high complexity and low efficiency of traditional speech synthesis technology, the current research focus is the deep learning-based end-to-end speech synthesis technology, which has more powerful modeling ability and a simpler pipeline. It mainly consists of three modules: text front-end, acoustic model, and vocoder. This paper reviews the research s…
With the popularity of deep neural network, speech synthesis task has achieved significant improvements based on the end-to-end encoder-decoder framework in the recent days. More and more applications relying on speech synthesis technology have been widely used in our daily life. Robust speech synthesis model depends on high quality and customized data which needs lots of collecting efforts. It is worth investigating how to take advantage of low-quality and low resource voice data which can be easily obtained from the Internet for usage of synthesizing personalized voice. In this paper, the pr…
A large part of the expressive speech synthesis literature focuses on learning prosodic representations of the speech signal which are then modeled by a prior distribution during inference. In this paper, we compare different prior architectures at the task of predicting phoneme level prosodic representations extracted with an unsupervised FVAE model. We use both subjective and objective metrics to show that normalizing flow based prior networks can result in more expressive speech at the cost of a slight drop in quality. Furthermore, we show that the synthesized speech has higher variability,…

Recently, speech representation learning has improved many speech-related tasks such as speech recognition, speech classification, and speech-to-text translation. However, all the above tasks are in the direction of speech understanding, but for the inverse direction, speech synthesis, the potential of representation learning is yet to be realized, due to the challenging nature of generating high-quality speech. To address this problem, we propose our framework, Alignment-Aware Acoustic-Text Pretraining (A$^3$T), which reconstructs masked acoustic signals with text input and acoustic-text alig…
Speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) converts input speech to speech in another language. A challenge of delivering S2ST in real time is the accumulated delay between the translation and speech synthesis modules. While recently incremental text-to-speech (iTTS) models have shown large quality improvements, they typically require additional future text inputs to reach optimal performance. In this work, we minimize the initial waiting time of iTTS by adapting the upstream speech translator to generate high-quality pseudo lookahead for the speech synthesizer. After mitigating the initial delay, we…
Neural speech synthesis models can synthesize high quality speech but typically require a high computational complexity to do so. In previous work, we introduced LPCNet, which uses linear prediction to significantly reduce the complexity of neural synthesis. In this work, we further improve the efficiency of LPCNet -- targeting both algorithmic and computational improvements -- to make it usable on a wide variety of devices. We demonstrate an improvement in synthesis quality while operating 2.5x faster. The resulting open-source LPCNet algorithm can perform real-time neural synthesis on most e…
Parallel text-to-speech (TTS) models have recently enabled fast and highly-natural speech synthesis. However, they typically require external alignment models, which are not necessarily optimized for the decoder as they are not jointly trained. In this paper, we propose a differentiable duration method for learning monotonic alignments between input and output sequences. Our method is based on a soft-duration mechanism that optimizes a stochastic process in expectation. Using this differentiable duration method, we introduce AutoTTS, a direct text-to-waveform speech synthesis model. AutoTTS en…
We propose a Text-to-Speech method to create an unseen expressive style using one utterance of expressive speech of around one second. Specifically, we enhance the disentanglement capabilities of a state-of-the-art sequence-to-sequence based system with a Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) and a Householder Flow. The proposed system provides a 22% KL-divergence reduction while jointly improving perceptual metrics over state-of-the-art. At synthesis time we use one example of expressive style as a reference input to the encoder for generating any text in the desired style. Perceptual MUSHRA evaluati…
Currently, there are increasing interests in text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis to use sequence-to-sequence models with attention. These models are end-to-end meaning that they learn both co-articulation and duration properties directly from text and speech. Since these models are entirely data-driven, they need large amounts of data to generate synthetic speech with good quality. However, in challenging speaking styles, such as Lombard speech, it is difficult to record sufficiently large speech corpora. Therefore, in this study we propose a transfer learning method to adapt a sequence-to-sequence…

This paper introduces a multi-scale speech style modeling method for end-to-end expressive speech synthesis. The proposed method employs a multi-scale reference encoder to extract both the global-scale utterance-level and the local-scale quasi-phoneme-level style features of the target speech, which are then fed into the speech synthesis model as an extension to the input phoneme sequence. During training time, the multi-scale style model could be jointly trained with the speech synthesis model in an end-to-end fashion. By applying the proposed method to style transfer task, experimental resul…

As a consequence, the research on the control of the expressiveness, allowing to generate speech in different styles or manners, has attracted increasing attention lately. Systems able to control style have been developed and show impressive results. However the control parameters often consist of latent variables and remain complex to interpret. In this paper, we analyze and compare different latent spaces and obtain an interpretat…

To enable training speech synthesis models with less curated data, a number of preprocessing tools are built and their importance is shown empirically. To facilitate faster iteration of development and analysis, a suite of automatic metrics is included. Apart from the features added specifically for this extension, fairseq S^2 also benefits from the scalability offered by fairseq and can be easily integrated …

High-fidelity speech can be synthesized by end-to-end text-to-speech models in recent years. However, accessing and controlling speech attributes such as speaker identity, prosody, and emotion in a text-to-speech system remains a challenge. This paper presents a system involving feedback constraint for multispeaker speech synthesis. We manage to enhance the knowledge transfer from the speaker verification to the speech synthesis by engaging the speaker verification network. The constraint is taken by an added loss related to the speaker identity, which is centralized to improve the speaker sim…
Statistical parametric speech synthesizers have recently shown their ability to produce natural-sounding and flexible voices. Unfortunately the delivered quality suffers from a typical buzziness due to the fact that speech is vocoded. This paper proposes a new excitation model in order to reduce this undesirable effect. This model is based on the decomposition of pitch-synchronous residual frames on an orthonormal basis obtained by Principal Component Analysis. This basis contains a limited number of eigenresiduals and is computed on a relatively small speech database. A stream of PCA-based co…

Attention-based sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) speech synthesis has achieved extraordinary performance. But a studio-quality corpus with manual transcription is necessary to train such seq2seq systems. In this paper, we propose an approach to build high-quality and stable seq2seq based speech synthesis system using challenging found data, where training speech contains noisy interferences (acoustic noise) and texts are imperfect speech recognition transcripts (textual noise). To deal with text-side noise, we propose a VQVAE based heuristic method to compensate erroneous linguistic feature with…

Denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs) have recently achieved leading performances in many generative tasks. However, the inherited iterative sampling process costs hindered their applications to speech synthesis. This paper proposes FastDiff, a fast conditional diffusion model for high-quality speech synthesis. FastDiff employs a stack of time-aware location-variable convolutions of diverse receptive field patterns to efficiently model long-term time dependencies with adaptive conditions. A noise schedule predictor is also adopted to reduce the sampling steps without sacrificing the…
In this paper, we construct a Japanese audiobook speech corpus called "J-MAC" for speech synthesis research. With the success of reading-style speech synthesis, the research target is shifting to tasks that use complicated contexts. Audiobook speech synthesis is a good example that requires cross-sentence, expressiveness, etc. Unlike reading-style speech, speaker-specific expressiveness in audiobook speech also becomes the context. To enhance this research, we propose a method of constructing a corpus from audiobooks read by professional speakers. From many audiobooks and their texts, our meth…

Recent advances in neural autoregressive models have improve the performance of speech synthesis (SS). However, as they lack the ability to model global characteristics of speech (such as speaker individualities or speaking styles), particularly when these characteristics have not been labeled, making neural autoregressive SS systems more expressive is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose to combine VoiceLoop, an autoregressive SS model, with Variational Autoencoder (VAE). This approach, unlike traditional autoregressive SS systems, uses VAE to model the global characteristics explic…

The increased adoption of digital assistants makes text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis systems an indispensable feature of modern mobile devices. It is hence desirable to build a system capable of generating highly intelligible speech in the presence of noise. Past studies have investigated style conversion in TTS synthesis, yet degraded synthesized quality often leads to worse intelligibility. To overcome such limitations, we proposed a novel transfer learning approach using Tacotron and WaveRNN based TTS synthesis. The proposed speech system exploits two modification strategies: (a) Lombard speak…

Recent expressive text to speech (TTS) models focus on synthesizing emotional speech, but some fine-grained styles such as intonation are neglected. In this paper, we propose QI-TTS which aims to better transfer and control intonation to further deliver the speaker's questioning intention while transferring emotion from reference speech. We propose a multi-style extractor to extract style embedding from two different levels. While the sentence level represents emotion, the final syllable level represents intonation. For fine-grained intonation control, we use relative attributes to represent i…

This paper proposes a deep denoising auto-encoder technique to extract better acoustic features for speech synthesis. The technique allows us to automatically extract low-dimensional features from high dimensional spectral features in a non-linear, data-driven, unsupervised way. We compared the new stochastic feature extractor with conventional mel-cepstral analysis in analysis-by-synthesis and text-to-speech experiments. Our results confirm that the proposed method increases the quality of synthetic speech in both experiments.
Audiovisual speech synthesis is the problem of synthesizing a talking face while maximizing the coherency of the acoustic and visual speech. In this paper, we propose and compare two audiovisual speech synthesis systems for 3D face models. The first system is the AVTacotron2, which is an end-to-end text-to-audiovisual speech synthesizer based on the Tacotron2 architecture. AVTacotron2 converts a sequence of phonemes representing the sentence to synthesize into a sequence of acoustic features and the corresponding controllers of a face model. The output acoustic features are used to condition a…
In this paper we demonstrate speech synthesis using different electroencephalography (EEG) feature sets recently introduced in [1]. We make use of a recurrent neural network (RNN) regression model to predict acoustic features directly from EEG features. We demonstrate our results using EEG features recorded in parallel with spoken speech as well as using EEG recorded in parallel with listening utterances. We provide EEG based speech synthesis results for four subjects in this paper and our results demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing speech directly from EEG features.

Speech synthesis has come a long way as current text-to-speech (TTS) models can now generate natural human-sounding speech. However, most of the TTS research focuses on using adult speech data and there has been very limited work done on child speech synthesis. This study developed and validated a training pipeline for fine-tuning state-of-the-art (SOTA) neural TTS models using child speech datasets. This approach adopts a multi-speaker TTS retuning workflow to provide a transfer-learning pipeline. A publicly available child speech dataset was cleaned to provide a smaller subset of approximate…
Speech synthesis is widely used in many practical applications. In recent years, speech synthesis technology has developed rapidly. However, one of the reasons why synthetic speech is unnatural is that it often has over-smoothness. In order to improve the naturalness of synthetic speech, we first extract the mel-spectrogram of speech and convert it into a real image, then take the over-smooth mel-spectrogram image as input, and use image-to-image translation Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs) framework to generate a more realistic mel-spectrogram. Finally, the results show that this method …

Several recent work on speech synthesis have employed generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce raw waveforms. Although such methods improve the sampling efficiency and memory usage, their sample quality has not yet reached that of autoregressive and flow-based generative models. As speech audio consists of sinusoidal signals with various periods, we demonstrate that modeling periodic patterns of an audio is crucial for enhancing sample quality.
