The abstract notion of topology has led to profound insights into real materials. Notably, the surface and edges of topological materials can host physics, such as unidirectional charge or spin transport, that is unavailable in isolated one- and two-dimensional systems. However, to fully control the mixing and interference of edge-state wave functions, one needs robust and tunable junctions. We propose to achieve this control using an antiferromagnetic topological insulator that supports two distinct types of gapless unidirectional channels on its surface, one from antiferromagnetic domain walls and the other from single-height steps. The distinct geometric nature of these edge modes allows them to intersect robustly to form quantum point junctions, and their presence at the surface makes them subject to control by magnetic and electrostatic tips like those used in scanning probe microscopes. Prospects for realizing such junctions are encouraged by recent material candidate proposals, potentially leading to exciting applications in quantum computing and sensing.
This paper reports our Monte Carlo (MC) studies aiming to explain the experimentally observed paramagnetic molecule induced antiferromagnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes. Recently developed magnetic tunnel junction based molecular spintronics devices (MTJMSDs), which were prepared by chemically bonding the paramagnetic molecules between the FM electrodes along the exposed side edges of magnetic tunnel junctions, exhibited molecule induced strong antiferromagnetic coupling. Our MC studies focused on the atomic model analogous to the MTJMSD and studied the effect of molecu…
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ is believed to be an axion insulator in its antiferromagnetic ground state. However, direct identification of axion insulators remains experimentally elusive because the observed vanishing Hall resistance, while indicating the onset of the axion field, is inadequate to distinguish the system from a trivial normal insulator. Using numerical Green's functions, we theoretically demonstrate the quantized magnetoelectric current in a tunnel junction of atomically thin ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ sandwiched be…
We have investigated metallic break junctions of the heavy-fermion compound UPd2Al3 at low temperatures between 0.1K and 9K and in magnetic fields up to 8T. Both the current-voltage I(V) characteristics and the dV/dI (V) spectra clearly showed the superconducting ($T_{\rm c}\simeq$ 1.8K) as well as the antiferromagnetic ($T_{\rm N}\simeq$14K) transition at low temperatures when the bias voltage is raised. The junctions with lateral size of order 200nm had huge critical current densities around $5\times 10^{10} A/m^2 at the antiferromagnetic transition and hysteretic I(V) characteristics. Degra…
Antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics has emerged as a subfield of spintronics driven by the advantages of antiferromagnets producing no stray fields and exhibiting ultrafast magnetization dynamics. The efficient method to detect an AFM order parameter, known as the Néel vector, by electric means is critical to realize concepts of AFM spintronics. Here, we demonstrate that non-collinear AFM metals, such as Mn3Sn, exhibit a momentum dependent spin polarization which can be exploited in AFM tunnel junctions to detect the Néel vector. Using first-principles calculations based on density functional …
We demonstrate that shot noise in Fe/MgO/Fe/MgO/Fe double-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions is determined by the relative magnetic configuration of the junction and also by the asymmetry of the barriers. The proposed theoretical model, based on sequential tunneling through the system and including spin relaxation, successfully accounts for the experimental observations for bias voltages below 0.5V, where the influence of quantum well states is negligible. A weak enhancement of conductance and shot noise, observed at some voltages (especially above 0.5V), indicates the formation of quantum well…
We theoretically study the current-induced spin torque in antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions, composed of two semi-infinite antiferromagnetic layers separated by a tunnel barrier, in both clean and disordered regimes. We find that the torque enabling the electrical manipulation of the Néel antiferromagnetic order parameter is out of plane $\sim {\bf n}\times{\bf p}$, while the torque competing with the antiferromagnetic exchange is in-plane $\sim {\bf n}\times({\bf p}\times{\bf n})$. Here, ${\bf { p}}$ and ${\bf { n}}$ are the Néel order parameter direction of the reference and free layers, re…
Ferromagnetic spin-valves and tunneling junctions are crucial for spintronics applications and are one of the most fundamental spintronics devices. Motivated by the potential unique advantages of antiferromagnets for spintronics, we theoretically study here junctions built out of non-collinear antiferromagnets. We demonstrate a large and robust magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque capable of ultrafast switching between parallel and anti-parallel states of the junction. In addition, we show that the non-collinear order results in a spin-transfer torque that is in several key aspects diffe…
We calculate the dc supercurrent through a Josephson tunnel junction consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AF) interlayer sandwiched between two d-wave superconductors (d). Such d/AF/d junctions exhibit a rich dependence of the Josephson current on the interlayer parameters, including the possibility of 0-pi transitions with varying temperature or interlayer thickness. Furthermore, we study d/I/d junctions when the dSC leads include subdominant magnetic correlations. In this case induced magnetism near the interface can strongly diminish the critical current for 110 oriented junctions whereas no…
We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S/AF/S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0- or pi-junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi-0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bo…

In the Josephson effect, coherent Cooper pair tunneling is driven by the phase difference between the superconducting order parameters on opposite sides of the junction. By analogy, differences in order parameters across a junction should lead to coherent tunneling of the condensed objects that exist in the broken symmetry state. To exhibit the generality of this phenomenon and make predictions from a realistic model, we study the case of a tunnel junction between two itinerant antiferromagnets. At the mean-field level, we find an equilibrium current of the staggered magnetization through the …
In this work, the rich ground-state structure of orthogonally-coupled symmetric all-antiferromagnetic junctions with easy-plane anisotropy is reported. Spin reorientation process rather than the traditional spin flop (SF) occurs, resulting in a novel phase in which Néel vectors preserve the mirror-reflection symmetry (termed as ``MRS phase"). The phase transitions between SF and MRS phases can be either the first- or second-order. After disturbed by external stimuli, magnons with different parities emerge. For in-plane dc fields, no couplings between magnons occur. When dc fields become obliqu…
The influence of an intramolecular proton transfer reaction on the conductance of a molecular junction is investigated employing a generic model, which includes the effects of the electric field of the gate and leads electrodes and the coupling to a dissipative environment. Using a quantum master equation approach it is shown that, depending on the localization of the proton, the junction exhibits a high or low current state, which can be controlled by external electric fields. Considering different regimes, which range from weak to strong hydrogen bonds in the proton transfer complex and comp…
An in-plane magnetic field applied to an Ising superconductor converts spin-singlet Cooper pairs to spin-triplet ones. In this work, we study a Josephson junction formed by two Ising superconductors that are proximitized by ferromagnetic layers. This leads to highly tunable spin-triplet pairing correlations which allow to modulate the charge and spin supercurrents through the in-plane magnetic exchange fields. For a junction with a nonmagnetic barrier, the charge current is switchable by changing the relative alignment of the in-plane exchange fields, and a $π$-state can be realized. Furthermo…
We have observed at low temperatures (<8K) hysteretic I(V) characteristics for sub-mkm (~200nm) metallic break-junctions based on the heavy-fermion compound UPd2Al3. Degrading the quality of the contacts by in situ increasing the local residual resistivity or temperature rise reduces the hysteresis. We demonstrate that those hysteretic I(V) curves can be reproduced theoretically by assuming the constriction to be in the thermal regime. Our calculations show that such anomalous I(V) curves are due to the sharp increase of ρ(T) of UPd2Al3 near the Neel temperature T_N ~ 14K. From this point of v…
Large magnetoresistance effect controlled by electric field rather than magnetic field or electric current is a preferable routine for designing low power consumption magnetoresistance-based spintronic devices. Here we propose an electric-field controlled antiferromagnetic (AFM) tunnel junction with structure of piezoelectric substrate/Mn3Pt/SrTiO3/Pt operating by the magnetic phase transition (MPT) of antiferromagnet Mn3Pt through its magneto-volume effect. The transport properties of the proposed AFM tunnel junction have been investigated by employing first-principles calculations. Our resul…

The anomalous ground state phase shift in S/AF/S Josephson junctions in the presence of the Rashba SO-coupling is predicted and numerically investigated. It is found to be a consequence of the uncompensated magnetic moment at the S/AF interfaces. The anomalous phase shift exhibits a strong dependence on the value of the SO-coupling and the sublattice magnetization with the simultaneous existence of stable and metastable branches. It depends strongly on the orientation of the Neel vector with respect to the S/AF interfaces via the dependence on the orientation of the interface uncompensated mag…
We study spin-dependent electron transport through a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic-normal metal tunneling junction subject to a voltage or temperature bias, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. We derive microscopic formulas for various types of spin torque acting on the antiferromagnet as well as for charge and spin currents flowing through the junction. The obtained results are applicable in the limit of slow magnetization dynamics. We identify a parameter regime in which an unconventional damping-like torque can become comparable in magnitude to the equivalent of the conventional Sloncz…
When a constriction is realized in a 2D quantum spin Hall system, electron tunneling between helical edge states occurs via two types of channels allowed by time-reversal symmetry, namely spin-preserving ({p}) and spin-flipping ({f}) tunneling processes. Determining and controlling the effects of these two channels is crucial to the application of helical edge states in spintronics. We show that, despite the Hamiltonian terms describing these two processes do not commute, the scattering matrix entries of the related 4-terminal setup always factorize into products of p-terms and f-terms contrib…
Single molecules are nanoscale thermodynamic systems with few degrees of freedom. Thus, the knowledge of their entropy can reveal the presence of microscopic electron transfer dynamics, that are difficult to observe otherwise. Here, we apply thermocurrent spectroscopy to directly measure the entropy of a single free radical molecule in a magnetic field. Our results allow us to uncover the presence of a singlet to triplet transition in one of the redox states of the molecule, not detected by conventional charge transport measurements. This highlights the power of thermoelectric measurements whi…
The electrical conductance of molecular junctions may strongly depend on the temperature, and weakly on molecular length, under two distinct mechanisms: phase-coherent resonant conduction, with charges proceeding via delocalized molecular orbitals, and incoherent thermally-assisted multi-step hopping. While in the case of coherent conduction the temperature dependence arises from the broadening of the Fermi distribution in the metal electrodes, in the latter case it corresponds to electron-vibration interaction effects on the junction. With the objective to distill the thermally-activated hopp…
The ground state of a graphene sheet at charge neutrality in a perpendicular magnetic field remains enigmatic, with various experiments supporting canted antiferromagnetic, bond ordered, and even charge density wave phases. A promising avenue to elucidating the nature of this state is to sandwich it between regions of different filling factors, and study spin-dependent tunneling across the edge modes at the interfaces. Here we report on tunnel transport through a $ν=0$ region in a graphite-gated, hexagonal boron nitride ($hBN$) encapsulated monolayer graphene device, with the $ν=0$ strip sandw…
The effect of non-equilibrium constraints and dephasing on the circulating currents in molecular junctions are analyzed. Circulating currents are manifestations of quantum effects and can be induced either by externally applied bias or an external magnetic field through the molecular system. In symmetric Aharonov-Bohm ring, bond currents have two contributions, bias driven and magnetic field driven. We analyze the competition between these two contributions and show that, as a consequence, current through one of the branches can be completely suppressed. We then study the effect of asymmetry (…
An ideal layered $\hat{x}$-polarized antiferromagnet (AFM) between two antialigned $\pm \hat{z}$ polarized ferromagnetic (FM) contacts transmits no current due to a $π$ phase difference of the matrix elements coupling the spin degenerate states to the two FM contacts. The ratio of the two matrix elements coupling the two spin degenerate $\hat{x}$ AFM states to a $\hat{z}$ FM contact is determined by the exchange energy and the eigenstate energy. Inserting a normal metal layer or tunnel barrier layer between one FM contact and the AFM alters this phase difference, and, due to the unequal weight…
Atomically thin chromium triiodide (CrI3) has recently been identified as a layered antiferromagnetic insulator, in which adjacent ferromagnetic monolayers are antiferromagnetically coupled. This unusual magnetic structure naturally comprises a series of anti-aligned spin filters which can be utilized to make spin-filter magnetic tunnel junctions with very large tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR). Here we report voltage control of TMR formed by four-layer CrI3 sandwiched by monolayer graphene contacts in a dual-gated structure. By varying the gate voltages at fixed magnetic field, the device ca…
The spin Seebeck effect is studied across a charge insulating magnetic junction, in which thermal-spin conjugate transport is assisted by the exchange interactions between the localized spin in the center and electrons in metallic leads. We show that, in contrast with bulk spin Seebeck effect, the figure of merit of such nanoscale thermal-spin conversion can be infinite, leading to the ideal Carnot efficiency in the linear response regime. We also find that in the nonlinear spin Seebeck transport regime, the device possesses the asymmetric and negative differential spin Seebeck effects. In the…
Spectra and spin structures of Andreev interface states and the Josephson current are investigated theoretically in junctions between clean superconductors (SC) with ordered interlayers. The Josephson current through the ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet interlayer can exhibit a nonmonotonic dependence on the misorientation angle. The characteristic behavior takes place if the pi state is the equilibrium state of the junction in the particular case of parallel magnetizations. We find a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection (Q reflection) from the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet (AF…

A method to perform spectrum analysis on low power signals between 0.1 and 10 THz is proposed. It utilizes a nanoscale antiferromagnetic tunnel junction (ATJ) that produces an oscillating tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance, whose frequency is dependent on the magnitude of an evanescent spin current. It is first shown that the ATJ oscillation frequency can be tuned linearly with time. Then, it is shown that the ATJ output is highly dependent on matching conditions that are highly dependent on the dimensions of the dielectric tunneling barrier. Spectrum analysis can be performed by using an…
There are two elementary superconducting qubit types that derive directly from the quantum harmonic oscillator. In one the inductor is replaced by a nonlinear Josephson junction to realize the widely used charge qubits with a compact phase variable and a discrete charge wavefunction. In the other the junction is added in parallel, which gives rise to an extended phase variable, continuous wavefunctions and a rich energy level structure due to the loop topology. While the corresponding rf-SQUID Hamiltonian was introduced as a quadratic, quasi-1D potential approximation to describe the fluxonium…
The theory of time-dependent quantum transport addresses the question: How do electrons flow through a junction under the influence of an external perturbation as time goes by? In this paper, we invert this question and search for a time-dependent bias such that the system behaves in a desired way. This can, for example, be an observable that is forced to follow a certain pattern or the minimization of an objective function which depends on the observables. Our system of choice consists of quantum dots coupled to normal or superconducting leads. We present results for junctions with normal lea…
We propose to realize Majorana fermions (MFs) on an edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in the proximity with s-wave superconductors and in the presence of transverse exchange field h. It is shown that there appear a pair of MFs localized at two junctions and that a reverse in direction of h can lead to permutation of two MFs. With decreasing h, the MF states can either be fused or form one Dirac fermion on the π-junctions, exhibiting a topological phase transition. This characteristic can be used to detect physical states of MFs when they are transformed into Dirac fermions locali…
The Josephson effect is generally described as Cooper pair tunneling, but it can also be understood in a more general context. The DC Josephson effect is the pseudo-Goldstone boson of two coupled systems with a broken continuous abelian U(1) symmetry. Hence, an analog should exist for systems with broken continuous non-Abelian symmetries. To exhibit the generality of the phenomenon and make predictions from a realistic model, we study tunneling between antiferromagnets and also between antiferromagnetic d-wave superconductors. Performing a calculation analogous to that of Ambegaokar and Barato…
We predict that junctions between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a superconductor provide a robust platform to create a one-dimensional topological superconducting state. Its emergence does not require the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling nor non-collinear magnetism, but arises solely from repulsive electronic interactions on interfacial solitonic states. We demonstrate that a topological superconducting state is generated by repulsive interactions at arbitrarily small coupling strength, and that the size of the topological gap rapidly saturates to the one of the parent trivial su…
Controlling the magnetization reversal process of magnetic elements is important for a wide range of applications that make use of magnetoresistive effects, but is difficult to achieve for devices that require adjacent thin film structures capable of contacting an individual molecule or quantum dot. We report on the fabrication and measurement of ferromagnetic break junction devices with planar, elliptical leads to address the particular challenge of controlling the relative magnetization alignment between neighboring electrodes. Low temperature transport measurements, supported by finite-elem…
The van der Waals magnets CrX$_3$ (X = I, Br, and Cl) exhibit highly tunable magnetic properties and are promising candidates for developing novel two-dimensional (2D) magnetic devices such as magnetic tunnel junctions and spin tunneling transistors. Previous studies of CrCl$_3$ have mainly focused on mechanically exfoliated samples. Controlled synthesis of high quality atomically thin flakes is critical for their technological implementation but has not been achieved to date. Here, we report the growth of large CrCl$_3$ flakes with well-defined facets down to monolayer thickness (~0.6 nm) via…
We investigate the dependence of magnetic properties on the out-of-plane disorder strength $Δ$, dipolar interaction strength $h^{}_d$ in two-dimensional ($l^{}_x\times l^{}_y$) ensembles of nanoparticles using numerical simulations. Such positional defects are redundantly observed in experiments. The superparamagnetic character is dominant with negligible and weak interaction strength $h^{}_d$, irrespective of $Δ$ and aspect ratio of the system $A^{}_r=l^{}_y/l^{}_x$. The double-loop hysteresis curve, characteristics of antiferromagnetic coupling dominance, emerges with large $h^{}_d$ and $Δ(\…
New macroscopic quantum interference effects in the behavior of the antiferromagnetic nanoclusters under action of a swept magnetic field are predicted and theoretically investigated, namely : oscillations of the magnetic susceptibility of nanocluster similar to the electron Bloch oscillations in crystal and the corresponding Stark ladder-like resonances in ac-magnetic field. These effects are related to that of the macroscopic quantum coherence phenomena. The analogy of the antiferromagnetic nanoclusters quantum behavior and Josephson junction with a small capacity was revealed as well.
Controlled electromigration of gold nanowires of different cross-sectional areas to form nanogap junctions is studied using a feedback method. A linear correlation between the cross sectional area of the gold nanowires and the power dissipated in the junction during electromigration is observed, indicating that the feedback mechanism operates primarily by controlling the temperature of the junction during electromigration. We also show that the role of the external feedback circuit is to prevent thermal runaway; minimization of series resistance allows controlled electromigration to a signific…
We show that novel fixed points (characterized by matrices which specify the splitting of the currents at the junction) can be accessed in a system which contains a junction of three quantum Hall line junctions. For such a junction of fractional quantum Hall edge states, we find that it is possible for both the flower (single droplet) and islands (three droplets) configurations to be stable in an intermediate region, for a range of values of the inter-edge repulsive interactions. A measurement of the tunneling conductance as a function of the gate voltage controlling inter-edge repulsions can …
We report the transport measurements on the InAs self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs) which have a unique structural zero-dimensionality, coupled to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Owing to the SQUID geometry, we directly observe a π phase shift in the current phase relation and the negative supercurrent indicating π junction behavior by not only tuning the energy level of SAQD by back-gate but also controlling the coupling between SAQD and electrodes by side-gate. Our results inspire new future quantum information devices which can link optical, spin, and superconducting…
