We consider gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric sphere of a fluid with spin and torsion into a black hole. We use the Tolman metric and the Einstein$-$Cartan field equations with a relativistic spin fluid as a source. We show that gravitational repulsion of torsion prevents a singularity and replaces it with a nonsingular bounce. Quantum particle production during contraction helps torsion to dominate over shear. Particle production during expansion can generate a finite period of inflation and produce enormous amounts of matter. The resulting closed universe on the other side of the event horizon may have several bounces. Such a universe is oscillatory, with each cycle larger in size than the previous cycle, until it reaches the cosmological size and expands indefinitely. Our universe might have therefore originated from a black hole.
We consider Friedmann-like universes with torsion and take a step towards studying their stability. In so doing, we apply dynamical-system techniques to an autonomous system of differential equations, which monitors the evolution of these models via the associated density parameters. Assuming relatively weak torsion, we identify the system's equilibrium points. These are found to represent homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes with nonzero torsion that undergo accelerated expansion. We then examine the linear stability of the aforementioned fixed points. Our results indicate that Friedmann-like…
We analyze the dynamics of a homogeneous and isotropic universe in the Einstein$--$Cartan theory of gravity. The coupling between the spin and torsion prevents gravitational singularities and replaces the Big Bang with a nonsingular big bounce, at which the universe transitions from contraction to expansion. We show that a closed universe exists only when the product of the scale factor and temperature is higher than a particular threshold, contrary to a flat universe and an open universe, which are not restricted. During inflation, this product must increase to another threshold, so that the …
In the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity, the intrinsic spin of fermionic matter generates spacetime torsion and induces gravitational repulsion at extremely high densities. This repulsion prevents the collapsing spin-fluid matter in a black hole from forming a singularity. Instead, the interior of a black hole with a stiff equation of state becomes a new universe, which contracts until a (big) bounce and then expands. We derive the equations describing the dynamics of our Universe, formed in such a scenario, in terms of the conformal time which is a convenient variable for testi…
Using the Friedmann equations for a closed universe with spin and torsion, parametric equations for the scale factor and time are derived for the early universe.
A star of mass greater than a critical mass is believed to undergo gravitational collapse to form a singularity, owing to Hawking-Penrose singularity theorem which is based on the Raychaudhuri equation in the absence of torsion. We argue that the spin-aspect of matter can lead to the evasion of singularity, caused by its mass-aspect, via torsion in asymptotically safe gravity.
Torsion arising from fermionic matter in the Einstein-Cartan formulation of general relativity is considered in the context of Robertson-Walker geometries and the early Universe. An ambiguity in the way torsion arising from hot fermionic matter in chiral models should be implemented is highlighted and discussed. In one interpretation, chemical potentials in chiral models can contribute to the Friedmann equation and give a negative contribution to the energy density.
Starting from the generalized Raychaudhuri equation with torsion and non-metricity, and considering an FLRW spacetime we derive the most general form of acceleration equation in the presence of torsion and non-metricity. That is we derive the cosmic acceleration equation when the nonRiemannian degrees of freedom are also taken into account. We then discuss some conditions under which torsion and non-metricity accelerate/decelerate the expansion rate of the Universe.
We consider spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies with non-zero torsion. Given the high symmetry of these universes, we adopt a specific form for the torsion tensor that preserves the homogeneity and isotropy of the spatial surfaces. Employing both covariant and metric-based techniques, we derive the torsional versions of the continuity, the Friedmann and the Raychaudhuri equations. These formulae demonstrate how, by playing the role of the spatial curvature, or that of the cosmological constant, torsion can drastically change the evolution of the classic homogeneous and isotropic Fr…
One of the possible extensions of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity consists in allowing for the presence of spacetime torsion. The form of the underlying torsion tensor can be chosen such that the homogeneity and isotropy of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universes is preserved, and it has been recently suggested that such universes may undergo accelerating phases. We use recent low-redshift data, coming from Type Ia Supernova and Hubble parameter measurements, to phenomenologically constrain this class of models under the so-called steady-state torsion assumption of a constant fra…
Earlier Bamba et al [JCAP (2012)] have obtained cosmological magnetic fields in teleparallel torsion theories of gravity that are not compatible with galactic dynamos. This result agrees with previous ones obtained by the author which shows [Phys Lett B (2012)] that anti-dynamo generalised theorem to torsion theories forbides such kind of dynamos to explain galactic magnetic fields of the order of $μ$G. More recently the author has suggested [IJAA (2012)] that a sort of Biermann battery could be obtained in torsioned cosmology. Nevertheless in this paper we show that this can be a particular r…
We show that the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity with torsion not only extends general relativity to account for the intrinsic spin of matter, but it may also eliminate major problems in gravitational physics and answer major questions in cosmology. These problems and questions include: the origin of the Universe, the existence of singularities in black holes, the nature of inflation and dark energy, the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe, and the nature of dark matter.
The Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity removes the constraint of general relativity that the affine connection be symmetric by regarding its antisymmetric part, the torsion tensor, as a dynamical variable. The minimal coupling between the torsion tensor and Dirac spinors generates a spin-spin interaction which is significant in fermionic matter at extremely high densities. We show that such an interaction averts the unphysical big-bang singularity, replacing it with a cusp-like bounce at a finite minimum scale factor, before which the Universe was contracting. This scenario also e…
The simplest gauge gravitation theory in Riemann-Cartan space-time leading to the solution of the problem of cosmological singularity and dark energy problem is investigated with purpose to solve the dark matter problem. It is shown that the interaction of the vacuum torsion field with proper angular moments of gravitating objects can lead to appearance at astrophysical scale (galaxies, galactic clusters) additional force of gravitational attraction, which in the frame of standard theory is connected with dark matter.
In the present work, it is shown that the problem of the accelerating expansion of the Universe can be directly solved by applying Einstein geometrization philosophy in a wider geometry. The geometric structure used to fulfil the aim of the work is a version of Absolute Parallelism geometry in which curvature and torsion are simultaneously non vanishing objects. It is shown that, while the energy corresponding to the curvature of space- time gives rise to an attractive force, the energy corresponding to the torsion indicates the presence of a repulsive force. A fine tuning parameter can be adj…
For the Poincare gauge theory of gravity we consider the dynamical scalar torsion mode in a cosmological context. We explore in particular the possibility of using dynamical torsion to explain the current state of the accelerating Universe. With certain suitable sets of chosen parameters, this model can give a (qualitatively) proper description of the current universe without a cosmological constant, and the universe described is oscillating with a period of the Hubble time.
We propose a simple scenario which explains why our Universe appears spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic. We use the Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama (ECKS) theory of gravity which naturally extends general relativity to include the spin of matter. The torsion of spacetime generates gravitational repulsion in the early Universe filled with quarks and leptons, preventing the cosmological singularity: the Universe expands from a state of minimum but finite radius. We show that the dynamics of the closed Universe immediately after this state naturally solves the flatness and horizon problems i…
We consider the model of modified gravity with dynamical torsion. This model was found to have promising stability properties about various backgrounds. The model admits a self-accelerating solution. We have shown previously that if the parameters are adjusted in such a way that the torsion is much greater than the effective cosmological constant, the self-accelerating solution is unstable: there are exponentially growing modes. Here we study the scalar perturbations in the case when the torsion is of the order of the effective cosmological constant. We find that there are no exponential insta…
The Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity naturally extends general relativity to account for the intrinsic spin of matter. Spacetime torsion, generated by spin of Dirac fields, induces gravitational repulsion in fermionic matter at extremely high densities and prevents the formation of singularities. Accordingly, the big bang is replaced by a bounce that occurred when the energy density $ε\propto gT^4$ was on the order of $n^2/m_\textrm{Pl}^2$ (in natural units), where $n\propto gT^3$ is the fermion number density and $g$ is the number of thermal degrees of freedom. If the early Uni…
Several exact cosmological solutions of a metric-affine theory of gravity with two torsion functions are presented. These solutions give a essentially different explanation from the one in most of previous works to the cause of the accelerating cosmological expansion and the origin of the torsion of the spacetime. These solutions can be divided into two classes. The solutions in the first class define the critical points of a dynamical system representing an asymptotically stable de Sitter spacetime. The solutions in the second class have exact analytic expressions which have never been found …
A surprising feature of our present four dimensional universe is that its evolution appears to be governed solely by spacetime curvature without any noticeable effect of spacetime torsion. In the present paper, we give a possible explanation of this enigma through ``cosmological evolution'' of spacetime torsion in the backdrop of a higher dimensional braneworld scenario. Our results reveal that the torsion field may had a significant value at early phase of our universe, but gradually decreased with the expansion of the universe. This leads to a negligible footprint of torsion in our present v…
It is shown that cosmological equations for homogeneous isotropic models deduced in the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity by certain restrictions on indefinite parameters of gravitational Lagrangian take at asymptotics the same form as cosmological equations of general relativity theory for $ΛCDM$-model. Terms related to dark matter and dark energy in cosmological equations of standard theory for $ΛCDM$-model are connected in considered theory with the change of gravitational interaction provoked by spacetime torsion.
We consider a model belonging to the class of gravities with dynamical torsion. The model is free of ghosts and gradient instabilities about Minkowski and torsionless Einstein backgrounds. We find that at zero cosmological constant, the model admits a self-accelerating solution with non-Riemannian connection. Small value of the effective cosmological constant is obtained at the expense of the hierarchy between the dimensionless couplings.
Cosmological solutions for homogeneous isotropic models in the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity based on gravitational Lagrangian adopted in the paper by Kun-Feng Shie, James M. Nester and Hwei-Jang Yo (Phys. Rev. D \textbf{78}, 023522 (2008)) are discussed. Cosmological solutions for accelerating Universe obtained in referred paper are compared with corresponding solutions of standard $ΛCDM$-model and also with cosmological solution obtained by authors of this Comment.
A teleparallel Gödel universe is shown to lead to a simple and natural relation between Cartan torsion and the global rotation of the universe. This is straightforward if one uses the formalism of Cartan's calculus of exterior differential forms. It is possible to place a limit on the global rotation from the knowledge of torsion and the converse is also true. The Obukhov recent limit of $\fracω{H_{0}}=1$ leads to the well know value for cosmological torsion of $10^{-17} cm^{-1}$.COBE constraints on the temperature anisotropy allows us to obtain limits on the torsion fluctuation in Gödel's univer…
We study a $R^{2}$ model of gravity with torsion in a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. The model is cast in Hamiltonian form subtracting from the original Lagrangian the total time derivative of $f_{K}f_{R}$, where $f_{K}$ is proportional to the trace of the extrinsic curvature tensor, and $f_{R}$ is obtained differentiating the Lagrangian with respect to the highest derivative. Torsion is found to lead to a primary constraint linear in the momenta and a secondary constraint quadratic in the momenta, and the full field equations are finally worked out in detail. Problems to be studi…
Investigations of the dynamic modes of the Poincare gauge theory of gravity found only two good propagating torsion modes; they are effectively a scalar and a pseudoscalar. Cosmology affords a natural situation where one might see observational effects of these modes. Here we consider only the ``scalar torsion'' mode. This mode has certain distinctive and interesting qualities. In particular this type of torsion does not interact directly with any known matter and it allows a critical non-zero value for the affine scalar curvature. Via numerical evolution of the coupled nonlinear equations we …
Cosmology with non-perturbative quantum corrections resulting from torsion is considered. It is shown that the evolution of closed, open and flat Universes is changed because of the presence of a non-zero dispersion of quantum torsion. The evolution of a Universe with quantum torsion and with one type of average curvature can be similar to the evolution of a Universe without quantum torsion and with another type of average curvature. For the description of the non-perturbative quantum torsion, a vector field approximation is applied.
The "dark energy" problem is investigated in the framework of the Poincare gauge theory of gravity in 4-dimensional Riemann-Cartan space-time. By using general expression for gravitational Lagrangian homogeneous isotropic cosmological models with pseudoscalar torsion function are built and investigated. It is shown that by certain restrictions on indefinite parameters of gravitational Lagrangian the cosmological equations at asymptotics contain effective cosmological constant and can lead to observable acceleration of cosmological expansion. This effect has geometrical nature and is connected …
The Raychaudhuri equations for the expansion, shear and vorticity are generalized in a spacetime with torsion for timelike as well as null congruences. These equations are purely geometrical like the original Raychaudhuri equations and could be reduced to them when there is no torsion. Using the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble field equations the effective stress-energy tensor is derived. We also consider an Oppenheimer-Snyder model for the gravitational collapse of dust. It is shown that the null energy condition (NEC) is violated before the density of the collapsing dust reaches the Planck den…
Spacetime curvature plays the primary role in general relativity but Einstein later considered a theory where torsion was the central quantity. Just as the Einstein-Hilbert action in the Ricci curvature scalar R can be generalized to f(R) gravity, we consider extensions of teleparallel, or torsion scalar T, gravity to f(T) theories. The field equations are naturally second order, avoiding pathologies, and can give rise to cosmic acceleration with unique features.
The currently accelerated expansion of our Universe is unarguably one of the most intriguing problems in today's physics research. Two realistic non-minimal torsion-matter coupling $f(T)$ models have been established and studied in our previous papers [Phys. Rev. D92, 104038(2015) and Eur. Phys. J. C77, 504(2017)] aiming to explain this "dark energy" problem. In this paper, we study the generalized power-law torsion-matter coupling $f(T)$ model. Dynamical system analysis shows that the three expansion phases of the Universe, i.e. the radiation dominated era, the matter dominated era and the da…
In this paper, we examine the cosmological dynamics of a slotheon field in a linear potential. The slotheon correction term $\frac{G^{μν}}{2M^2}π_{;μ}π_{;ν}$ respects the galileon symmetry in curved space time. We demonstrate the future evolution of universe in this model. We show that in this scenario, the universe ends with the Big Crunch singularity like the standard case. The difference being that the time at which the singularity occurs is delayed in the slotheon gravity. The delay crucially depends upon the strength of slotheon correction.
This paper deals with the symmetry analysis of the Einstein Cartan theory which is an extension of the General Relativity and it accounts for the space-time torsion. We begin by applying Noether Theorem to the Lagrangian of the FRW type cosmology with torsion and choose a point transformation: $(a,ϕ,N)\rightarrow(u,v,W)$, such that one of the transformed variable is cyclic for the Lagrangian. Then using the conserved charge, which is obtained by applying Noether theorem, and the constant of motion, we get the solutions and conclude that due to the presence of torsion the FRW type cosmology is …
Non-Abelian gauge fields are traditionally not coupled to torsion due to violation of gauge invariance. However, it is possible to couple torsion to Yang-Mills fields while maintaining gauge invariance provided one accepts that the gauge couplings then become scalar fields. In the past this has been untenable from experimental constraints at the current epoch for the electromagnetic field at least. Recent researches on the "landscape" arising out of string theory provides for many scalar fields which eventually determine the various low energy parameters including gauge couplings in the univer…
We consider spacetime with torsion in a Randall-Sundrum (RS) scenario where torsion, identified with the rank-2 Kalb-Ramond field, exists in the bulk together with gravity. While the interactions of both graviton and torsion in the bulk are controlled by the Planck mass, an additional exponential suppression comes for the torsion zero-mode on the visible brane. This may serve as a natural explanation of why the effect of torsion is so much weaker than that of curvature on the brane. The massive torsion modes, on the other hand, are correlated with the corresponding gravitonic modes and may be …
We analyze the phase space of Bianchi I cosmologies filled by a spin fluid in the framework of $f(R)$-gravity with torsion using a combination of the dynamical systems approach and the 1+3 covariant formalism. In the simple case of $f(R)=R^n$ our results allow a quantification of the role of torsion and the spin of the cosmic fluid in the evolution of the cosmology. While torsion is able to modify the cosmological dynamics with respect to the purely metric case, the spin has little influence on the cosmology. We argue that this is due to the different symmetries of the tensor characterizing th…
In the field equations of Einstein-Cartan theory with cosmological constant a static spherically symmetric perfect fluid with spin density satisfying the Weyssenhoff restriction is considered. This serves as a rough model of space filled with (fermionic) dark matter. From this the Einstein static universe with constant torsion is constructed, generalising the Einstein Cosmos to Einstein-Cartan theory. The interplay between torsion and the cosmological constant is discussed. A possible way out of the cosmological constant's sign problem is suggested.
We consider the model of modified gravity with dynamical torsion. This model was previously found to have promising stability properties about various backgrounds. Here we study the stability of linear perturbations about the self-accelerating solution. We apply the $(3 + 1)$-decomposition and consider the scalar sector of perturbations. We find that the number of degrees of freedom is equal to 2, which is the same as in Minkowski background. However, there is at least one instability in the scalar sector, if the value of background torsion is large enough. This does not rule out the possibili…
We propose a simple scenario which explains the observed matter-antimatter imbalance and the origin of dark matter in the Universe. We use the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity which naturally extends general relativity to include the intrinsic spin of matter. Spacetime torsion produced by spin generates, in the classical Dirac equation, the Hehl-Datta term which is cubic in spinor fields. We show that under a charge-conjugation transformation this term changes sign relative to the mass term. A classical Dirac spinor and its charge conjugate therefore satisfy different field equa…
A cosmology of Poincare gauge theory is developed, where several properties of universe corresponding to the cosmological equations with the pseudoscalar torsion function are investigated. The cosmological constant is found to be the intrinsic torsion and curvature of the vacuum universe and is derived from the theory naturally rather than added artificially, i.e. the dark energy originates from geometry and includes the cosmological constant but differs from it. The cosmological constant puzzle, the coincidence and fine tuning problem are relieved naturally at the same time. By solving the co…
Earlier de Sabbata and Gasperini have shown that neutrinos oscillation which gives them a mass can be induced by torsion. More recently Enqvist et al have shown that it is possible to use massive neutrinos BBN magnetic fields to seed galactic magnetic fields. Thus based on these previous investigations we present several examples of how obtaining cosmological magnetic seed fields as galactic magnetic fields from massive neutrino densities and also from the torsion obtained by Nitsch as $T\approx{10^{-24}s^{-1}}$ at the present day which yields magnetic seed field of the order of $B_{seed}\appr…
We extend the treatment of quantum cosmology to a manifold with torsion. We adopt a model of Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble compatible with the cosmological principle. The universe wavefunction will be subject to a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian. With a vanishing energy-momentum tensor, the universe evolution in the semiclassical and classical regimes is shown to reflect a two-stage inflationary process induced by torsion.
The paper deals with cosmological solutions describing different phases of the Universe for the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model of the Universe with torsion. Normally, torsion field is not suitable for maximally symmetric space time model. However, one may use a specific profile of vectorial torsion field, derived from a scalar function. By proper choices of the torsion scalar function, it is shown that a continuous cosmic evolution starting from the emergent scenario to the present late time acceleration is possible. Also thermodynamics of the system is analyzed and equivalence with Eins…
Einstein-Cartan theory is an extension of the standard formulation of General Relativity characterized by a non-vanishing torsion. The latter is sourced by the matter fields via the spin tensor, and its effects are expected to be important at very high spin densities. In this work we analyze in detail the physics of Einstein-Cartan theory with Dirac and Maxwell fields minimally coupled to the spacetime torsion. This breaks the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, which is suggested by the possibility of a torsion-induced phase transition in the early Universe. The resulting Dirac-like and Maxwell-like equat…
We study the phase space dynamics of the non-minimally coupled Metric-Scalar-Torsion model in both Jordan and Einstein frames. We specifically check for the existence of critical points which yield stable solutions representing the current state of accelerated expansion of the universe fuelled by the Dark Energy. It is found that such solutions do indeed exist, subject to constraints on the free model parameter. In fact the evolution of the universe at these stable critical points exactly matches the evolution given by the cosmological solutions we found analytically in our previous work on th…
The effect of background dynamics of the universe on formation of large scale structures in the framework of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) is investigated. A spherical collapse model is used for modeling the formation of the structures. This study is done in two extreme cases: ({\it i}) assuming a universe with a low-density baryonic matter without any cold dark matter and dark energy; ({\it ii}) a dark energy dominated universe with baryonic matter, without cold dark matter. We show that for the case ({\it ii}) the structures virialize at lower redshifts with larger radii compared to the…
A new cosmological model based on the de Sitter gauge theory (dSGT) is studied in this paper. By some transformations, we find, in the dust universe, the cosmological equations of dSGT could form an autonomous system. We conduct dynamics analysis to this system, and find 9 critical points, among which there exist one positive attractor and one negative attractor. The positive attractor shows us that our universe will enter a exponential expansion phase in the end, which is similar to the conclusion of $Λ$CDM. We also carry out some numerical calculations, which confirms the conclusion of dynam…
Considering perturbation growth in spherical Top-Hat model of structure formation in a generalized Chaplygin gas dominated universe, we want to study this scenario with a modified Chaplygin gas model. The evolution of background and collapsed region parameters are found for different cases. The stability of the model and the collapse time rate are considered in different cases. The turn-around redshifts are also computed; the results are in relatively good agreement with current observational data.
We investigate the equation of state (EoS) of the scalar-torsion mode in Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. We concentrate on two cases with the constant curvature solution and positive kinetic energy, respectively. In the former, we find that the torsion EoS has different values in the various stages of the universe. In particular, it behaves like the radiation (matter) EoS of $w_r=1/3$ ($w_m=0$) in the radiation (matter) dominant epoch, while in the late time the torsion density is supportive for the accelerating universe. In the latter, our numerical analysis shows that in general the EoS ha…
Observations show that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. This requires that the dominant constituent of matter in the Universe has some unusual properties like negative pressure. This exotic component has been given the name dark energy. We work with the simplest model of dark energy, the cosmological constant introduced by Einstein. We study the evolution of spherical over-densities in such a model and show that there is a minimum over-density required for collapse: perturbations with a smaller amplitude do not collapse. This threshold is interesting as even perturbations with a …
Alterations of the gravity Lagrangian introduced in modified torsion gravity theories---also referred to as $f(T)$ gravity---allows for an accelerated expansion in a matter dominated Universe. In this framework, the cosmic speed up is driven by an effective `torsion fluid'. Besides the background evolution of the Universe, structure formation is also modified because of a time dependent effective gravitational constant. Here, we investigate the imprints of $f(T)$ gravity on galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing to the aim of understanding whether future galaxy surveys could constrai…
In this letter, we study the late-time evolution of a torsion cosmology only with the spin-$0^+$ mode. We find three kinds of analytical solutions with a constant affine scalar curvature. In the first case, it is not physical because the matter density will be negative. In the second case, it shows that the dark energy can be mimicked in the torsion cosmological model. In the third case, the characteristic of late-time evolution is similar to that of the universe of matter dominant. And we also find a kind of expression with the non-constant curvature that the periodic character of numerical c…
