We consider a set of observers who live near the boundary of global AdS, and are allowed to act only with simple low-energy unitaries and make measurements in a small interval of time. The observers are not allowed to leave the near-boundary region. We describe a physical protocol that nevertheless allows these observers to obtain detailed information about the bulk state. This protocol utilizes the leading gravitational back-reaction of a bulk excitation on the metric, and also relies on the entanglement-structure of the vacuum. For low-energy states, we show how the near-boundary observers can use this protocol to completely identify the bulk state. We explain why the protocol fails completely in theories without gravity, including non-gravitational gauge theories. This provides perturbative evidence for the claim that one of the signatures of holography -- the fact that information about the bulk is also available near the boundary -- is already visible in the low-energy theory of gravity.
We develop a holographic framework for describing the experience of bulk observers in AdS/CFT, that allows us to compute the proper time and energy distribution measured along any bulk worldline. Our method is formulated directly in the CFT language and is universal: It does not require knowledge of the bulk geometry as an input. When used to propagate operators along the worldline of an observer falling into an eternal black hole, our proposal resolves a conceptual puzzle raised by Marolf and Wall. Notably, the prescription does not rely on an external dynamical Hamiltonian or the AdS boundar…
We consider five dimensional non-factorizable geometries where the transverse dimension is bounded and the remaining (parallel) dimensions are not. We study the construction of effective theories at distances much longer than the transverse size. An observer unable to resolve the transverse direction can only measure distances along the parallel dimensions, but the non-factorizable geometry makes the length of a curve along the parallel dimension sensitive to where on the transverse direction the curve lies. We show that long geodesics that differ in their endpoints only by shifts along the tr…
We make the observation that a brane universe accelerates through its bulk spacetime, and so may be interpreted as an Unruh observer. The bulk vacuum is perceived to be a thermal bath that heats matter fields on the brane. It is shown that, aside from being relevant in the early universe, an asymptotic temperature exists for the brane universe corresponding to late time thermal equilibrium with the bulk. In the simplest case two possible equilibrium points exist, one at the Gibbons-Hawking temperature for an asymptotic de Sitter universe embedded in an Anti-de Sitter bulk and another with a no…
In the Randall-Sundrum scenario, our universe is a 4-dimensional `brane' living in a 5-dimensional bulk spacetime. By studying the scattering of bulk gravity waves, we show that this brane rings with a characteristic set of complex quasinormal frequencies, much like a black hole. To a bulk observer these modes are interpreted as metastable gravity wave bound states, while a brane observer views them as a discrete spectrum of decaying massive gravitons. Potential implications of these scattering resonances are discussed.
A recently explored interesting quantity in AdS/CFT, dubbed 'residual entropy', characterizes the amount of collective ignorance associated with either boundary observers restricted to finite time duration, or bulk observers who lack access to a certain spacetime region. However, the previously-proposed expression for this quantity involving variation of boundary entanglement entropy (subsequently renamed to 'differential entropy') works only in a severely restrictive context. We explain the key limitations, arguing that in general, differential entropy does not correspond to residual entropy.…
The boundary energy - momentum tensors for a static observer in the conformally flat Rindler geometry are considered. We found the surface energy is positive far form the Planck world but the transversal pressures are negative. The kinematical parameters associated to a nongeodesic congruence of static observers are computed. The entropy $S$ corresponding to the degrees of freedom on the two surface of constant $ρ$ and $t$ equals the horizon entropy of a black hole with a time dependent mass and the Padmanabhan expression $E = 2 S T$ is obeyed. The two surface shear tensor is vanishing but the…
We outline a program for interpreting the higher-spin dS/CFT model in terms of physics in the causal patch of a dS observer. The proposal is formulated in "elliptic" de Sitter space dS_4/Z_2, obtained by identifying antipodal points in dS_4. We discuss recent evidence that the higher-spin model is especially well-suited for this, since the antipodal symmetry of bulk solutions has a simple encoding on the boundary. For context, we test some other (free and interacting) theories for the same property. Next, we analyze the notion of quantum field states in the non-time-orientable dS_4/Z_2. We com…
We investigate the analogue of the Randall-Sundrum brane-world in the case when the bulk contains a black hole. Instead of the static vacuum Minkowski brane of the RS model, we have an Einstein static vacuum brane. We find that the presence of the bulk black hole has a dramatic effect on the gravity that is felt by brane observers. In the RS model, the 5D graviton has a stable localized zero-mode that reproduces 4D gravity on the brane at low energies. With a bulk black hole, there is no such solution -- gravity is delocalized by the 5D horizon. However, the brane does support a discrete spect…
A static observer with a finite lifetime has causal access to only a limited region of spacetime known as the causal diamond. The presence of an apparent horizon in the causal diamond, due to the observer's finite lifetime, is the origin of an Unruh-like thermal effect. Thus, even though the observer is static and the background is flat, the finite-lifetime observer experiences a thermal bath in the Minkowski vacuum. In this article, we provide an open quantum systems approach that yields a complete thermal characterization via the observer's steady-state density matrix, which is shown to be t…
Assuming the existence of a $dS/CFT$ correspondence we study the holograms of sources moving along geodesics in the bulk by calculating the one point functions they induce in the boundary theory. In analogy with a similar study of uniformly accelerated sources in $AdS$ spacetime, we argue that comoving geodesic observers correspond to a coordinate system on the boundary in which the one point function is {\it constant}. For $dS_3$ we show that the conformal transformations on the boundary which achieve this - when continued suitably to Lorentzian signature - induce nontrivial Bogoliubov transf…
First-quantized propagation in quantum gravitational AdS$_3$ backgrounds can be exactly reconstructed using CFT$_2$ data and Virasoro symmetry. We develop methods to compute the bulk-to-boundary propagator in a black hole microstate, $\langle ϕ_L \mathcal{O}_L \mathcal{O}_H \mathcal{O}_H\rangle$, at finite central charge. As a first application, we show that the semiclassical theory on the Euclidean BTZ solution sharply disagrees with the exact description, as expected based on the resolution of forbidden thermal singularities, though this effect may appear exponentially small for physical obs…
We extend the covariant analysis of the brane cosmological evolution in order to take into account, apart from a general matter content and an induced-gravity term on the brane, a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. The gravitational effect of the bulk matter on the brane evolution can be described in terms of the total bulk mass as measured by a bulk observer at the location of the brane. This mass appears in the effective Friedmann equation through a term characterized as generalized dark radiation that induces mirage effects in the evolution. We discuss the normal and self-accelerating branches …
As an extension of arXiv:\{2002.02448, 2008.10740\} we present a physical protocol that a set of observers can use to detect a pure state in the bulk when they are spread across a small cut near $\mathcal{I}^+_-$ in flat spacetime. The protocol involves the modification of a bulk state using simple unitary operators and measurements of the energy of the state. The states that we study are constructed by acting with low energy operators on a vacuum state such that a perturbative analysis is valid. We restrict ourselves to $3+1$ dimensional spacetimes and only consider massless excitations. From…
I introduce a covariant four-vector $\mathcal{G}^a[v]$, which can be interpreted as the momentum density attributed to the spacetime geometry by an observer with velocity $v^a$, and describe its properties: (a) Demanding that the total momentum of matter plus geometry is conserved for all observers, leads to the gravitational field equations. Thus, how matter curves spacetime is entirely determined by this principle of momentum conservation. (b) The $\mathcal{G}^a[v]$ can be related to the gravitational Lagrangian in a manner similar to the usual definition of Hamiltonian in, say, classical me…
Recently we pointed out that the black hole interior operators can be reconstructed by using the Hayden-Preskill recovery protocols. Building on this observation, we propose a resolution of the firewall problem by presenting a state-independent reconstruction of interior operators. Our construction avoids the non-locality problem which plagued the "$A=R_{B}$" or "$\text{ER}=\text{EPR}$" proposals. We show that the gravitational backreaction by the infalling observer, who simply falls into a black hole, disentangles the outgoing mode from the early radiation. The infalling observer crosses the …
It was recently suggested that quantum mechanics and gravity are not fundamental but emerge from information loss at causal horizons. On the basis of the formalism the holographic principle is also shown to arise naturally from the loss of information about bulk fields observed by an outside observer. As an application, Witten's prescription is derived.
We use a new, exact approach in calculating the energy density measured by an observer living on a brane embedded in a charged black hole spacetime. We find that the bulk Weyl tensor gives rise to non-linear terms in the energy density and pressure in the FRW equations for the brane. Remarkably, these take exactly the same form as the ``unconventional'' terms found in the cosmology of branes embedded in pure AdS, with extra matter living on the brane. Black hole driven cosmologies have the benefit that there is no ambiguity in splitting the braneword energy momentum into tension and additional…
If two parties share sufficient entanglement, they are able to implement any channel on a shared bipartite state via non-local quantum computation -- a protocol consisting of local operations and a single simultaneous round of quantum communication. Such a protocol can occur in the AdS/CFT correspondence, with the two parties represented by regions of the CFT, and the holographic state serving as a resource to provide the necessary entanglement. This boundary non-local computation is dual to the local implementation of a channel in the bulk AdS theory. Previous work on this phenomenon was obst…
In AdS/CFT, there can exist local 2-to-2 bulk scattering processes even when local scattering is not possible on the boundary; these have previously been studied in connection with boundary correlation functions. We show that boundary regions associated with these scattering configurations must have $O(1/G_N)$ mutual information, and hence a connected entanglement wedge. One of us previously argued for this statement from the boundary theory using operational tools in quantum information theory. We improve that argument to make it robust to small errors and provide a proof in the bulk using fo…
We present a "holographic" reconstruction of bulk spacetime geometry using correlation functions of a massless field living at the "future boundary" of the spacetime, namely future null infinity $\mathscr{I}^+$. It is holographic in the sense that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between correlation functions of a massless field in four-dimensional spacetime $\mathcal{M}$ and those of another massless field living in three-dimensional null boundary $\mathscr{I}^+$. The idea is to first reconstruct the bulk metric $g_{μν}$ by "inverting" the bulk correlation functions and re-express the…
Brane world gravity looks different for observers on positive and negative tension branes. First we consider the well-known RS1 model with two branes embedded into the AdS_5 space-time and recall the results on the relations between the energy scales for an observer on the negative tension brane, which is supposed to be "our" brane. Then from the point of view of this observer we study energy scales and masses for the radion and graviton excitations in a stabilized brane world model. We argue that there may be several possibilities leading to scales of the order 1-10 TeV or even less for new p…
We present two particular decoding procedures for reconstructing a quantum state from the Hawking radiation in the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment. We work in an idealized setting and represent the black hole and its entangled partner by $n$ EPR pairs. The first procedure teleports the state thrown into the black hole to an outside observer by post-selecting on the condition that a sufficient number of EPR pairs remain undisturbed. The probability of this favorable event scales as $1/d_{A}^2$, where $d_A$ is the Hilbert space dimension for the input state. The second procedure is determinis…
