In this paper, we study a class of fractional semi-infinite polynomial programming (FSIPP) problems, in which the objective is a fraction of a convex polynomial and a concave polynomial, and the constraints consist of infinitely many convex polynomial inequalities. To solve such a problem, we first reformulate it to a pair of primal and dual conic optimization problems, which reduce to semidefinite programming (SDP) problems if we can bring sum-of-squares structures into the conic constraints. To this end, we provide a characteristic cone constraint qualification for convex semi-infinite programming problems to guarantee strong duality and also the attainment of the solution in the dual problem, which is of its own interest. In this framework, we first present a hierarchy of SDP relaxations with asymptotic convergence for the FSIPP problem whose index set is defined by finitely many polynomial inequalities. Next, we study four cases of the FSIPP problems which can be reduced to either a single SDP problem or a finite sequence of SDP problems, where at least one minimizer can be extracted. Then, we apply this approach to the four corresponding multi-objective cases to find efficient solutions.
We present an efficient algorithm for solving fractional programming problems whose objective functions are the ratio of a low-rank quadratic to a positive definite quadratic with convex constraints. The proposed algorithm for these convex-convex problems is based on the Shen-Yu Quadratic Transform which finds stationary points of concave-convex sum-of-ratios problems. We further use elements of the algorithm proposed in [arXiv:1802.10192] and the classic Dinkelbach approach to ensure convergence. We show that our algorithm performs better than previous algorithms for low-rank problems.
In this paper we propose two proximal gradient algorithms for fractional programming problems in real Hilbert spaces, where the numerator is a proper, convex and lower semicontinuous function and the denominator is a smooth function, either concave or convex. In the iterative schemes, we perform a proximal step with respect to the nonsmooth numerator and a gradient step with respect to the smooth denominator. The algorithm in case of a concave denominator has the particularity that it generates sequences which approach both the (global) optimal solutions set and the optimal objective value of …
In this note we study multiple-ratio fractional 0--1 programs, a broad class of NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. In particular, under some relatively mild assumptions we provide a complete characterization of the conditions, which ensure that a single-ratio function is submodular. Then we illustrate our theoretical results with the assortment optimization and facility location problems, and discuss practical situations that guarantee submodularity in the considered application settings. In such cases, near-optimal solutions for multiple-ratio fractional 0--1 programs can be found v…
We consider fractional linear programming production games for the single-objective and multiobjective cases. We use the method of Chakraborty and Gupta (2002) in order to transform the fractional linear programming problems into linear programming problems. A cooperative game is attached and we prove the non-emptiness of the core by using the duality theory from the linear programming. In the multiobjective case, we give a characterization of the Stable outcome of the associate cooperative game, which is balanced. We also consider the cooperative game associated to an exchange economy with a …
The strict complementary slackness condition (SCSC) is an important concept in the duality theory of linear programming (LP). The current study aims at extending this concept to the framework of linear fractional programming (LFP). First, we define this concept in this framework and demonstrate the existence of a strict complementary solution - a pair of primal and dual optimal solutions satisfying the SCSC. Second, we show that the problem of finding such a solution reduces to that of identifying a relative interior point of a polyhedron. More recently, Mehdiloozad et al. (2016) have addresse…
We explore the approximation of feedback control of integro-differential equations containing a fractional Laplacian term. To obtain feedback control for the state variable of this nonlocal equation we use the Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equation. It is well-known that this approach suffers from the curse of dimensionality, and to mitigate this problem we couple semi-Lagrangian schemes for the discretization of the dynamic programming principle with the use of Shepard approximation. This coupling enables approximation of high dimensional problems. Numerical convergence toward the solution of the…
In this paper, in the absence of any constraint qualifications, we develop sequential necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for a constrained multiobjective fractional programming problem characterizing a Henig proper efficient solution in terms of the $ε$-subdifferentials and the subdifferentials of the functions. This is achieved by employing a sequential Henig subdifferential calculus rule of the sums of $m \ (m\geq 2)$ proper convex vector valued mappings with a composition of two convex vector valued mappings. In order to present an example illustrating the main results of this p…
This paper presents a canonical dual approach to the problem of minimizing the sum of a quadratic function and the ratio of nonconvex function and quadratic functions, which is a type of non-convex optimization problem subject to an elliptic constraint. We first relax the fractional structure by introducing a family of parametric subproblems. Under certain conditions, we show that the canonical dual of each subproblem becomes a two-dimensional concave maximization problem that exhibits no duality gap. Since the infimum of the optima of the parameterized subproblems leads to a solution to the o…
This paper proposes a fuzzy goal programming based on Taylor series for solving decentralized bi-level multiobjective fractional programming (DBLMOFP) problem. In the proposed approach, all of the membership functions are associated with the fuzzy goals of each objective at the both levels and also the fractional membership functions are converted to linear functions using the Taylor series approach. Then a fuzzy goal programming is proposed to reach the highest degree of each of the membership goals by taking the most satisfactory solution for all decision makers at the both levels. Finally, …
In this paper, we study a class of fractional semi-infinite polynomial programming problems involving s.o.s-convex polynomial functions. For such a problem, by a conic reformulation proposed in our previous work and the quadratic modules associated with the index set, a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations can be constructed and convergent upper bounds of the optimum can be obtained. In this paper, by introducing Lasserre's measure-based representation of nonnegative polynomials on the index set to the conic reformulation, we present a new SDP relaxation method for the consi…
We extend Robust Optimization to fractional programming, where both the objective and the constraints contain uncertain parameters. Earlier work did not consider uncertainty in both the objective and the constraints, or did not use Robust Optimization. Our contribution is threefold. First, we provide conditions to guarantee that either a globally optimal solution, or a sequence converging to the globally optimal solution, can be found by solving one or more convex optimization problems. Second, we identify two cases for which an exact solution can be obtained by solving a single optimization p…
In this paper, a class of general nonlinear programming problems with inequality and equality constraints is discussed. Firstly, the original problem is transformed into an associated simpler equivalent problem with only inequality constraints. Then, inspired by the ideals of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method and the method of system of linear equations (SLE), a new type of SQP algorithm for solving the original problem is proposed. At each iteration, the search direction is generated by the combination of two directions, which are obtained by solving an always feasible quadratic p…
The purpose of this paper is to study a non-convex fuzzy multi-objective quadratic programming problem, in which both the technological coefficients and resources are fuzzy with nonlinear membership function. A computational procedure to find a fuzzy efficient solution of this problem is developed. A numerical example is given to illustrate the procedure.
Due to the unobservability of confoundings, there has been widespread concern about how to compute causality quantitatively. To address this challenge, proxy-based negative control approaches have been commonly adopted, where auxiliary outcome variables $\bm{W}$ are introduced as the proxy of confoundings $\bm{U}$. However, these approaches rely on strong assumptions such as reversibility, completeness, or bridge functions. These assumptions lack intuitive empirical interpretation and solid verification techniques, hence their applications in the real world are limited. For instance, these app…
Bilevel optimization has been widely used in decision-making process. However, there still lacks an efficient algorithm to determine an optimal solution of a bilevel optimization problem, especially for a large-size problem. To bridge the gap, this paper proposes an efficient decomposition algorithm for a general bilevel linear programming(GBLP). The simulation results on large-size testing system demonstrate its correctness and efficiency.
We develop a simple and accurate method to solve fractional variational and fractional optimal control problems with dependence on Caputo and Riemann-Liouville operators. Using known formulas for computing fractional derivatives of polynomials, we rewrite the fractional functional dynamical optimization problem as a classical static optimization problem. The method for classical optimal control problems is called Ritz's method. Examples show that the proposed approach is more accurate than recent methods available in the literature.
This paper considers a fractional programming problem (P) which minimizes a ratio of quadratic functions subject to a two-sided quadratic constraint. As is well-known, the fractional objective function can be replaced by a parametric family of quadratic functions, which makes (P) highly related to, but more difficult than a single quadratic programming problem subject to a similar constraint set. The task is to find the optimal parameter $λ^*$ and then look for the optimal solution if $λ^*$ is attained. Contrasted with the classical Dinkelbach method that iterates over the parameter, we propos…
In this paper, notion of p - norm generalized trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy numbers is introduced. A new ranking method is introduced for p - norm generalized trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy numbers. Also we consider linear programming problem in intuitionistic fuzzy environment. In this problem, all the coefficients and variables are represented by p - norm generalized trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy numbers. To overcome the limitations of the existing methods, a new method is proposed to compute the intuitionistic fuzzy optimal solution for intuitionistic fuzzy linear programming proble…
Multicriterion optimization and Pareto optimality are fundamental tools in economics. In this paper we propose a new relaxation method for solving multiple objective quadratic programming problems. Exploiting the technique of the linear weighted sum method, we reformulate the original multiple objective quadratic programming problems into a single objective one. Since such single objective quadratic programming problem is still nonconvex and NP-hard in general. By using the techniques of lifting and doubly nonnegative relaxation, respectively, this single objective quadratic programming proble…
Linear programming (LP) relaxation is a standard technique for solving hard combinatorial optimization (CO) problems. Here we present a gradient descent algorithm which exploits the special structure of some LP relaxations induced by CO problems. The algorithm can be run in parallel mode and was implemented as CUDA C/C++ program to be executed on GPU. We exemplify efficiency of the algorithm by solving a fractional 2-matching problem. Our results demonstrate that a fractional 2-matching problem with 100,000 nodes is solved by our algorithm on a modern GPU on a scale of a second while solving t…
In this paper, an algorithm is developed to solve a multilevel mono-objective linear programming problem (ML(MO)LPP), where the constructive adaptive method of linear programming is nested. This procedure is the modified version of the SB. Sinha and S. Sinha's linear programming approach. First, we build a map that reduces the ranges of decision variables that are over control of the previous level's decision maker, depending on the chosen approach, called the range reduction map. Then, we use it to define a new sub-optimality estimate of the adaptive method for the problem under consideration…
In this article, we use the monotonic optimization approach to propose an outcome-space outer approximation by copolyblocks for solving strictly quasiconvex multiobjective programming problems and especially in the case that the objective functions are nonlinear fractional. After the algorithm is terminated, with any given tolerance, we obtain an approximation of the weakly efficient solution set, that contains the whole weakly efficient solution set of the problem. The algorithm is proved to be convergent and it is suitable to be implemented in parallel using standard convex programming tools…
Ordinary differential equations that model technical systems often contain states, that are considered dangerous for the system. A trajectory that reaches such a state usually indicates a flaw in the design. In this paper, we present and study the properties of an algorithm for finding such trajectories. That is, for a given ordinary differential equation, the algorithm finds a trajectory that originates in one set of states and reaches another one. The algorithm is based on sequential quadratic programming applied to a regularized optimization problem obtained by multiple shooting.
In this paper we propose a new efficient linear programming based approach for multi-resource allocation and location problems in disaster management. Such problems require an integer solution and therefore, in most cases, the computations rely on integer and mixed-integer linear programming solvers. In general, these solvers can not handle large scaled problem. In this paper we demonstrate that there exists a large class of disaster management problems whose exact solutions can be obtained by applying the simplex method (linear programming). The results of numerical experiments are provided. …
We consider the problem of approximately solving a standard bi-quadratic programming (StBQP), which is NP-hard. After reformulating the original problem as an equivalent copositive tensor programming, we show how to approximate the optimal solution by approximating the cone of copositive tensors via a serial polyhedral cones. The established quality of approximation shows that, a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for solving StBQP exists and can be extended to solving standard multi-quadratic programming. Some numerical examples are provided to illustrate our approach.
In this paper, we discuss the solution of a Quadratic Eigenvalue Complementarity Problem (QEiCP) by using Difference of Convex (DC) programming approaches. We first show that QEiCP can be represented as dc programming problem. Then we investigate different dc programming formulations of QEiCP and discuss their dc algorithms based on a well-known method -- DCA. A new local dc decomposition is proposed which aims at constructing a better dc decomposition regarding to the specific feature of the target problem in some neighborhoods of the iterates. This new procedure yields faster convergence and…
The Piecewise Polynomial Interpolation (PPI) function approach is aimed at solving nonlinear programming problems with disjoint feasible regions. In such problems, disjointedness is generally associated with prohibited operating zones, which correspond to bands of values that a variable is not allowed to assume. An analytical implication of such prohibited operating zones is to make the objective function, as well as its domain, discontinuous. The PPI function approach consists in replacing the constraints associated with prohibited operating zones by an equivalent set of equality and inequali…
It is a crucial problem how to heat oil and save running cost for crude oil transport. This paper strictly formulates such a heated oil pipeline problem as a mixed integer nonlinear programming model. Nonconvex and convex continuous relaxations of the model are proposed, which are proved to be equivalent under some suitable conditions. Meanwhile, we provide a preprocessing procedure to guarantee these conditions. Therefore we are able to design a branch-and-bound algorithm for solving the mixed integer nonlinear programming model to global optimality. To make the branch-and-bound algorithm mor…
In this paper we consider three minimization problems, namely quadratic, $ρ$-convex and quadratic fractional programing problems. The quadratic problem is considered with quadratic inequality constraints with bounded continuous and discrete mixed variables. The $ρ$-convex problem is considered with $ρ$-convex inequality constraints in mixed variables. The quadratic fractional problem is studied with quadratic fractional constraints in mixed variables. For all three problems we reformulate the problem as a mathematical programming problem and apply standard Karush Kuhn Tucker necessary conditio…
In this study, calculations necessary to solve the large scale linear programming problems in two operating systems, Linux and Windows 7 (Win), are compared using two different methods. Relying on the interior-point methods, linear-programming interior point solvers (LIPSOL) software was used for the first method and relying on an augmented Lagrangian method-based algorithm, the second method used the generalized derivative. The performed calculations for various problems show the produced random in the Linux operating system (OS) and Win OS indicate the efficiency of the performed calculation…
This paper presents three direct methods based on Grünwald-Letnikov, trapezoidal and Simpson fractional integral formulas to solve fractional optimal control problems (FOCPs). At first, the fractional integral form of FOCP is considered, then the fractional integral is approximated by Grünwald-Letnikov, trapezoidal and Simpson formulas in a matrix approach. Thereafter, the performance index is approximated either by trapezoidal or Simpson quadrature. As a result, FOCP are reduced to nonlinear programming problems, which can be solved by many well-developed algorithms. To improve the efficiency…
Mathematical programs with complementarity constraints are notoriously difficult to solve due to their nonconvexity and lack of constraint qualifications in every feasible point. This work focuses on the subclass of quadratic programs with linear complementarity constraints. A novel approach to solving a penalty reformulation using sequential convex programming and a homotopy on the penalty parameter is introduced. Linearizing the necessarily nonconvex penalty function yields convex quadratic subproblems, which have a constant Hessian matrix throughout all iterates. This allows solution comput…
A class of non-convex optimization problems with DC objective function is studied, where DC stands for being representable as the difference $f=g-h$ of two convex functions $g$ and $h$. In particular, we deal with the special case where one of the two convex functions $g$ or $h$ is polyhedral. In case $g$ is polyhedral, we show that a solution of the DC program can be obtained from a solution of an associated polyhedral projection problem. In case $h$ is polyhedral, we prove that a solution of the DC program can be obtained by solving a polyhedral projection problem and finitely many convex pr…
We consider a Bolza-type optimal control problem for a dynamical system described by a fractional differential equation with the Caputo derivative of an order $α\in (0, 1)$. The value of this problem is introduced as a functional in a suitable space of histories of motions. We prove that this functional satisfies the dynamic programming principle. Based on a new notion of coinvariant derivatives of the order $α$, we associate the considered optimal control problem with a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. Under certain smoothness assumptions, we establish a connection between the value function…

Several algorithms are available in the literature for finding the entire set of Pareto-optimal solutions in MultiObjective Linear Programming (MOLP). However, it has not been proposed so far an interior point algorithm that finds all Pareto-optimal solutions of MOLP. We present an explicit construction, based on a transformation of any MOLP into a finite sequence of SemiDefinite Programs (SDP), the solutions of which give the entire set of Pareto-optimal extreme points solutions of MOLP. These SDP problems are solved by interior point methods; thus our approach provides a pseudo-polynomial in…

The analysis is based on the BSF model of parallel computations. The BSF model is a new parallel computation model designed on the basis of BSP and SPMD models. The brief descriptions of the NSLP algorithm and the BSF model are given. The NSLP algorithm implementation in the form of a BSF program is considered. On the basis of the BSF cost metric, the upper bound of the NSLP algorithm scalability is derived and its parallel eff…
In this paper, we investigate a spectral Petrov-Galerkin method for an optimal control problem governed by a two-sided space-fractional diffusion-advection-reaction equation. Taking into account the effect of singularities near the boundary generated by the weak singular kernel of the fractional operator, we establish the regularity of the problem in weighted Sobolev space. Error estimates are provided for the presented spectral Petrov-Galerkin method and the convergence orders of the state and control variables are determined. Furthermore, a fast projected gradient algorithm with a quasi-line…
