Neutrino oscillations in matter provide a unique probe of new physics. Leveraging the advent of neutrino appearance data from NOvA and T2K in recent years, we investigate the presence of CP-violating neutrino non-standard interactions in the oscillation data. We first show how to very simply approximate the expected NSI parameters to resolve differences between two long-baseline appearance experiments analytically. Then, by combining recent NOvA and T2K data, we find a tantalizing hint of CP-violating NSI preferring a new complex phase that is close to maximal: $ϕ_{eμ}$ or $ϕ_{eτ}\approx3π/2$ with $|ε_{eμ}|$ or $|ε_{eτ}|\sim0.2$. We then compare the results from long-baseline data to constraints from IceCube and COHERENT.
Future accelerator neutrino experiments will provide a powerful tool to measure standard oscillation parameters and search for new physics. In this context, we discuss the prospects of building an accelerator neutrino experiment in China. The feasibility of such facilities is investigated by evaluating their prospects to the standard mixing parameters. As an example, we consider an SPPC-based neutrino beamline and CJPL-based neutrino detector with 1736 km baseline length. We find this setup able to significantly improve the precision on $δ_{CP}$, $θ_{23}$ and $Δm_{31}^2$.
Effects of CP-violating phases in active-sterile solar neutrino oscillations are discussed in a general scheme of 3+N_{s} mixing, without any constraint on the mixing between the three active and the N_{s} sterile neutrinos, assuming only a realistic hierarchy of neutrino mass-squared differences. A generalized Parke formula describing the neutrino oscillation probabilities inside the Sun is calculated. The validity of the analytical calculation and the probability variation due to the unknown CP-violating phases are illustrated with a numerical calculation of the evolution equation in the cas…
The program SOFTSUSY can calculate tree-level neutrino masses in the R-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with real couplings. At tree-level, only one neutrino acquires a mass, in contradiction with neutrino oscillation data. Here, we describe an extension to the SOFTSUSY program which includes one-loop R-parity violating effects' contributions to neutrino masses and mixing. Including the one-loop effects refines the radiative electroweak symmetry breaking calculation, and may result in up to three massive, mixed neutrinos. This paper serves as a manual to the neutri…
We investigate prospects of building a future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiment in China, including site selection, beam optimization and tau neutrino physics aspects. CP violation, non-unitary mixing and non-standard neutrino interactions are discussed. We simulate neutrino beam setups based on muon and beta decay techniques and compare Chinese laboratory sites by their expected sensitivities. A case study on Super Proton-Proton Collider and China JinPing Laboratory is also presented. It is shown that the muon-decay-based beam setup can measure the Dirac CP phase by about 14.2…
We consider various neutrino mixing matrix parametrizations and the dependence of the mixing angles and CP-violating phase on the different parametrizations. The transformations of neutrino mixing parameters between various parametrizations are presented. Although the $θ_{13}$ mixing angle is determined to be small in the conventional parametrization, we note that in several other parametrizations the values of $θ_{13}$ are quite large. Should the value of $θ_{13}$ turn out to be tiny in the conventional parametrization, this study suggests that other alternative mixing matrix representations …
The latest experimental progress have established three kinds of neutrino oscillations with three mixing angles measured to rather high precision. There is still one parameter, i.e., the CP violating phase, missing in the neutrino mixing matrix. It is shown that a replay between different parametrizations of the mixing matrix can determine the full neutrino mixing matrix together with the CP violating phase. From the maximal CP violation observed in the original Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) scheme of quark mixing matrix, we make an Ansatz of maximal CP violation in the neutrino mixing matrix. This l…
The purpose of this paper is to provoke a discussion about the right next step in accelerator-based neutrino physics. In the next five years many experiments will be done to determine the neutrino mixing parameters. However, the small parameters $θ_{13}Δm_{21}^2$, and the CP violating phase are unlikely to be well determined. Here, I look at the potential of high-intensity, low-energy, narrow-band conventional neutrino beams to determine these parameters. I find, after roughly estimating the possible intensity and purity of conventional neutrino and anti-neutrino beam, that $\sin^2θ_{13}$ can …
We study the complementarity between accelerator and reactor coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering (CE$ν$NS) experiments for constraining new physics in the form of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI). Firstly, considering just data from the recent observation by the COHERENT experiment, we explore interpretive degeneracies that emerge when activating either two or four unknown NSI parameters. Next, we demonstrate that simultaneous treatment of reactor and accelerator experiments, each employing at least two distinct target materials, can break a degeneracy between up and d…
We revisit correlations of neutrino oscillation parameters in reactor and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. A framework based on an effective value of $θ_{13}$ is presented, which can easily reproduce experimental results. It also clarifies why current and future long-baseline experiments will have less precision on values around $δ_{CP} = \pm π/2$ than on values around $δ_{CP} = 0$. Optimization potential for the determination of the theoretically very interesting values around $δ_{CP} = -π/2$ is also pointed out, which would require that future runs of accelerator experiments a…
We develop the consequences of introducing a purely leptonic, lepton number violating non-standard interaction (NSI) and standard model neutrino mixing with a fourth, sterile neutrino in the analysis of short-baseline, neutrino experiments. We focus on the muon decay at rest (DAR) result from the Liquid Scintillation Neutrino Experiment (LSND) and the Karlsruhe and Rutherford Medium Energy Neutrino Experiment (KARMEN). We make a comprehensive analysis of lepton number violating, NSI effective operators and find nine that affect muon decay relevant to LSND results. Two of these preserve the sta…
The neutrino oscillation probabilities at the long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments are expected to be modified by matter effects. We search for evidence of such modification in the data of T2K and NO$ν$A, by fitting the data to the hypothesis of (a) matter modified oscillations and (b) vacuum oscillations. We find that vacuum oscillations provide as good a fit to the data as matter modified oscillations. Even extended runs of T2K and NO$ν$A, with 5 years in neutrino mode $(5 ν)$ and five years in anti-neutrino mode $(5 \barν)$, can {\bf not} make a $3~σ$ distinction between vacuum an…
In the next generation of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, aiming to determine the charge-parity violating phase $δ_{CP}$ in the appearance channel, fine-grained time-projection chambers are expected to play an important role. In this Letter, we analyze an influence of realistic detector capabilities on the $δ_{CP}$ sensitivity for a setup similar to that of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. We find that the effect of the missing energy, carried out by undetected particles, is sizable. Although the reconstructed neutrino energy can be corrected for the missing energy, th…
Using a three neutrino framework we investigate bounds for the effective Majorana neutrino mass matrix. The mass measured in neutrinoless double beta decay is its (11) element. Lepton-number and -flavor violating processes sensitive to each element are considered and limits on branching ratios or cross sections are given. Those processes include $μ^- e^+$ conversion, $K^+ \to π^- μ^+ μ^+$ or recently proposed high-energy scattering processes at HERA. Including all possible mass schemes, the three solar solutions and other allowed possibilities, there is a total of 80 mass matrices. The obtaine…
We explore the feasibility of detecting heavy neutrinos by the existing facilities of neutrino experiments. A heavy neutrino in the mass range 1 MeV < M < 500 MeV is produced by pion or kaon decay, and decays to charged particles which leave signals in neutrino detectors. Taking the T2K experiment as a typical example, we estimate the heavy neutrino flux produced in the neutrino beam line. Due to massive nature of the heavy neutrino, the spectrum of the heavy neutrino is significantly different from that of the ordinary neutrinos. While the ordinary neutrinos are emitted to various directions …
In recent years great progress toward the understanding of the mixing in the leptonic sector has been made. Nonetheless, this field of research is just at the beginning. Further advance by accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments requires new beams and detectors to reach the wanted physics goals. In this paper we review the next possible steps that can be done for neutrino oscillation experiments with accelerators
CP-violation or Nuclear Excitation: Reviewing the Role of Neutrino Interaction Model Uncertainties on Accelerator-Based Neutrino Oscillation Measurements
If the massive neutrinos are identified to be the Majorana particles via a convincing measurement of the neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay, how to determine the Majorana CP-violating phases in the 3 x 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U will become a desirable experimental question. The answer to this question is to explore all the possible lepton-number-violating (LNV) processes in which the Majorana phases really matter. In this paper we carry out a systematic study of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, whose CP-conserving parts involve six independent 0νββ-like mass terms <…
We discuss a model for neutrino masses and mixings based on R parity violating Yukawa couplings. The model requires no right-handed neutrinos. It accommodates the SuperKamiokande data on atmospheric neutrinos and successfully relates this data to the mass difference for solar neutrinos in the small-angle MSW solution. We obtain an unexpected testable pattern for the three neutrino flavors.
The current status of non-accelerator based searches for effects of a non-vanishing neutrino mass is reviewed. Beside the direct kinematical methods this includes searches for magnetic moments and a discussion of the solar neutrino problem. Double beta decay is not included.
We analyze the potential of accelerator-based neutrino experiments, such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, to constrain a five dimensional operator mediating a beyond standard model interaction between mass dimension one fermion fields, labeled elko, and neutrino. We identify the parameter space where elko is a viable dark matter candidate.
We show that the predictions for lepton flavor violating decays, in the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, change drastically when we include in the computation the high-energy phases present in the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings.
We calculate the radiative decay amplitude for Majorana neutrinos in trilinear R-parity violating supersymmetric framework. Our results make no assumption regarding the masses and mixings of fermions and sfermions. The results obtained are exemplary for generic models with loop-generated neutrino masses. Comparison of this amplitude with the neutrino mass matrix shows that the two provide independent probes of CP-violating phases.
We analyze the dependence of the squared amplitudes on the rephasing-invariant CP-violating parameters of the lepton sector, involving Majorana neutrinos, for various lepton-conserving and lepton-violating processes. We analyze the conditions under which the CP-violating effects in such processes vanish, in terms of the minimal set of rephasing invariants, giving special attention to the dependence on the extra CP-violating parameters that are due to the Majorana nature of the neutrinos.
In the Standard Model minimally extended to include massive neutrinos, we compute the leading CP-violating zero temperature contributions to the one-loop effective action induced by integration of the leptons. Such contributions start at operators of dimension six and they are P even for Dirac neutrinos and P even or odd for Majorana neutrinos. Dimension four operators are allowed in the mixed Dirac-Majorana case. It is verified by explicit calculation that CP can be violated in two generation settings for Majorana neutrinos. Using different neutrino scenarios we give upper bounds for the coup…
A new model for neutrino oscillations is introduced, in which mass-like behavior is seen at high energies, but various behavior can be predicted at low energies. The model employs no neutrino masses, but instead relies on the Lorentz-violating parameters a and c. Oscillations into antineutrinos and sterile neutrinos are also considered.
We study Lorentz violation effects on flavor transitions of high energy astrophysical neutrinos. It is shown that the appearance of Lorentz violating Hamiltonian can drastically change the flavor transition probabilities of astrophysical neutrinos. Predictions of Lorentz violation effects on flavor compositions of astrophysical neutrinos arriving on Earth are compared with IceCube flavor composition measurement which analyzes astrophysical neutrino events in the energy range between $25~{\rm TeV}$ and $2.8~{\rm PeV}$. Such a comparison indicates that the future IceCube-Gen2 will be able to pla…
We propose an idea that the observed CP violation in neutrino oscillation is originated from the phase in right-handed neutrino mixing by seesaw mechanism. We add small breaking terms $M_{ij}N_{R_i}N_{R_j} $ in model based on $A_4$ symmetry to generate non-diagonal right-handed neutrino mixing, which will give a small correction to TBM mixing via seesaw mechanism with nonzero reactor angle and CP violating phase. We estimate the CP violating phase by investigating the process of leptogenesis due to the decay of right-handed neutrino.
The three-flavor neutrino oscillation paradigm is well established in particle physics thanks to the crucial contribution of accelerator neutrino beam experiments. In this paper we review the most important contributions of these experiments to the physics of massive neutrinos after the discovery of $θ_{13}$ and future perspectives in such a lively field of research. Special emphasis is given to the technical challenges of high power beams and the oscillation results of T2K, OPERA, ICARUS and NO$ν$A. We discuss in details the role of accelerator neutrino experiments in the precision era of neu…
We consider Lorentz- and CPT-violating dimension-5 operators to address the issue of superluminal neutrinos recently pointed out in OPERA experiments. We assume these operators in the photon and neutrino sectors coupled to Lorentz-violating backgrounds in a preferred frame defined by a time-like direction. We show that such operators can produce a curve with OPERA's slope that fits OPERA, MINOS and supernova SN1987a data.
In this paper, we study the detection of accelerator neutrinos produced at the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). Using the code FLUKA, we have simulated the production of neutrinos in the proton beam on the tungsten target and obtained the yield efficiency, numerical flux, and average energy of different flavors of neutrinos. Furthermore, detections of these accelerator neutrinos are investigated in two reaction channels, the neutrino-electron reactions and neutrino-carbon reactions. The event numbers of different flavors of neutrinos have also been calculated.
We propose a new idea to test a class of loop-induced neutrino mass mechanisms by searching for lepton number violating charged current processes with incident of a neutrino beam. The expected rates of these processes are estimated based on some theoretical assumptions. They turn out to be sizable so that detection of such processes could be possible at near detectors in future highly intense neutrino-beam facilities.
We propose a new mechanism to explain neutrino masses with lepton number conservation, in which the Dirac neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level involving a dark matter candidate. In this model, branching ratios of lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson can be much larger than those of lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons. If lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson are observed at future collider experiments without detecting lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons, most of the models previously proposed for tiny neutrino masses are excl…
A three-parameter model of neutrino oscillations based on a simple Lorentz- and CPT-violating texture is presented. The model is consistent with established data and naturally generates low-energy and neutrino-antineutrino anomalies of the MiniBooNE type. A one-parameter extension incorporates the MINOS anomaly, while a simple texture enhancement accommodates the LSND signal.
We compute one loop neutrino masses in the R-parity violating Minimal Supersymmetric Model, including the bilinear R-parity violating masses in the mass insertion approximation. To the order we calculate, our results are independent of the Higgs-lepton basis choice. We have a variety of perturbative parameters-gauge, yukawa and trilinear couplings, and R_p violating masses. Their relative magnitudes determine which diagrams are relevant for neutrino mass calculations. We find new loop diagrams which can be relevant and have frequently been neglected in the past. For the Grossman-Haber neutral …
Neutrino oscillations with three lepton families are described with a unitary mixing matrix U in analogy to the quark mixing matrix V(CKM). If U contains a nontrivial phase, there will be CP- and T-violating asymmetries at distances large compared to E/D**2, where D**2 is the largest difference of neutrino mass squares. The paper presents explicit expressions for these distance-dependent asymmetries.
We analyze neutrino oscillation for the general case when the initial neutrino is not in a pure flavor state. We show that, after such a neutrino beam propagates for a while, the probability of detecting any pure flavor state depends even on the CP-violating Majorana phases in the mixing matrix. The dependence remains even when energy spectrum of the initial beam is taken into account. We discuss various implications of this dependence.
A Majorana type of the neutrino mass matrix induces a class of lepton number violating processes. Cross sections of these reactions are given in terms of the neutrino mass matrix element, and a semi-realistic event rate is estimated. These processes provide mass and mixing parameters not directly accessible by the neutrino oscillation experiments. If these processes are discovered with a larger rate than given here, it would imply a new physics of the lepton number violation not directly related to the Majorana neutrino mass, such as R-parity violating operators in SUSY models.
R-parity-violating supersymmetry with a conserved baryon number B provides a framework for particle physics with lepton number (L) violating interactions. Two important probes of the L-violating physics are neutrino masses and sneutrino-antisneutrino mass-splittings. We evaluate these quantities in the context of the most general CP-conserving, R-parity-violating B-conserving extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In generic three-generation models, three sneutrino-antisneutrino mass splittings are generated at tree-level. In contrast, only one neutrino mass is generated at tr…
In the standard approach to the neutrino oscillations a unitary relation among weak and mass eigenstates of light neutrinos is imposed. However, in many extensions of the SM left-handed, active neutrinos mix with additional heavy neutrino states. Consequences of this additional mixing, driven by experimental constraints, on the neutrino oscillations are considered.
We reanalyze the constraints in neutrino masses and MNS lepton mixing parameters using the new data from the terrestrial (KamLAND) and astrophysical (WMAP) observations together with the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. We discuss the possibility of getting the bound for the Majorana CP violating phase.
With only three flavors it is possible to account for various neutrino oscillation experiments. The masses and mixing angles for three neutrinos can be determined from the available experimental data on neutrino oscillation and from the astrophysical arguments. We have shown here that such masses and mixing angles which can explain atmospheric neutrino anomaly, LSND result and the solar neutrino experimental data, can be reconciled with the R-parity violating Supersymmetric Models through lepton number violating interactions. We have estimated the order of magnitude for some lepton number viol…
The nontrivial structure of the neutrino mass matrix, suggested by the recent Super-Kamiokande results and data from other neutrino experiments, can be reproduced in R-parity-violating supersymmetric theories. This requires sets of products of R-parity-violating trilinear couplings to take appropriately chosen values. It is shown that the existing constraints on these couplings are satisfied by these choices.
The KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K) has begun its investigation of neutrino oscillations suggested by atmospheric neutrino observations. Twenty-eight neutrino events have been detected in coincidence with the expected arrival time of the beam in the 22.5 kt fiducial volume of Super--Kamiokande, the far detector at 250 km distance. The expectation is 37.8+3.5-3.8, derived using measurements of neutrino interactions in a near detector and extrapolation using a beam simulation validated by a measurement of pion kinematics after production and focusing. The background is of …
In this talk, we consider the interplay of fundamental and matter-induced T-violating effects in neutrino oscillations in matter. We present a simple approximative analytical formula for the T-violating probability asymmetry for three flavor neutrino oscillations in matter with an arbitrary density profile. We also discuss some implications of the obtained results. Since there are no T-violating effects in two flavor neutrino case (in the limit of vanshing $θ_{13}$ or $Δm_{21}^2$, the three flavor neutrino oscillations reduces to the two flavor ones), the T-violating probability asymmetry can,…
Bilinear R-parity violation is a simple extension of the MSSM allowing for Majorana neutrino masses. One of the three neutrinos picks up mass by mixing with the neutralinos of the MSSM, while the other two neutrinos gain mass from 1-loop corrections. Once 1-loop corrections are carefully taken into account the model is able to explain solar and atmospheric neutrino data for specific though simple choices of the R-parity violating parameters.
In this talk, I discuss the general theory of neutrino oscillation experiments, putting special emphasis on the momentum distribution of the incoming neutrino beam. Then I discuss recent neutrino oscillation experiments, viz., LSND, KARMEN and CHOOZ. Experiments foreseeable in the near future have also been discussed at the end.
Neutrino oscillation physics has entered a new precision era, which poses major challenges to the level of control and diagnostics of the neutrino beams. In this paper, we review the design of high-precision beams, their current limitations, and the latest techniques envisaged to overcome such limits. We put emphasis on "monitored neutrino beams" and advanced diagnostics to determine the flux and flavor of the neutrinos produced at the source at the per-cent level. We also discuss ab-initio measurements of the neutrino energy -- i.e. measurements performed without relying on the event reconstr…
In a novel parametrization of neutrino mixing and in the approximation of $τ$-lepton dominance, we show that the one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) of Dirac neutrinos are different from those of Majorana neutrinos even if two Majorana CP-violating phases vanish. As the latter can keep vanishing from the electroweak scale to the typical seesaw scale, it makes sense to distinguish between the RGE running effects of neutrino mixing parameters in Dirac and Majorana cases. The differences are found to be quite large in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with sizable $\tanβ$, pro…
Dirac neutrinos with lepton-number-violating interactions can give rise to a new leptogenesis mechanism. In its simplest renormalizable realization, based on a gauged B-L symmetry spontaneously broken by four units, the decay of a new scalar creates an asymmetry in the right-handed neutrinos. A neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet model converts this asymmetry to the baryons, provides a natural explanation of the small neutrino masses, and can lead to an effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom of N(eff) = 3.29 due to the entropy-suppressed contribution of the right-handed neutrinos.
We study neutrino masses and mixing in R-parity violating supersymmetric models with generic soft supersymmetry breaking terms. Neutrinos acquire masses from various sources: Tree level neutrino--neutralino mixing and loop effects proportional to bilinear and/or trilinear R-parity violating parameters. Each of these contributions is controlled by different parameters and have different suppression or enhancement factors which we identified. Within an Abelian horizontal symmetry framework these factors are related and specific predictions can be made. We found that the main contributions to the…
We investigate lepton-number-violating decays $K^\mp \rightarrow π^\pm l^\mp l^\mp$ in the presence of sterile neutrinos. We consider minimal interactions with Standard-Model fields through Yukawa couplings as well as higher-dimensional operators in the framework of the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We use $SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory to match to mesonic interactions and compute the lepton-number-violating decay rate in terms of the neutrino masses and the Wilson coefficients of higher-dimensional operators. For neutrinos that can be produced on-shell, the deca…
