The neutrino oscillation probabilities at the long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments are expected to be modified by matter effects. We search for evidence of such modification in the data of T2K and NO$ν$A, by fitting the data to the hypothesis of (a) matter modified oscillations and (b) vacuum oscillations. We find that vacuum oscillations provide as good a fit to the data as matter modified oscillations. Even extended runs of T2K and NO$ν$A, with 5 years in neutrino mode $(5 ν)$ and five years in anti-neutrino mode $(5 \barν)$, can {\bf not} make a $3~σ$ distinction between vacuum and matter modified oscillations. The proposed experiment DUNE, with neutrino and anti-neutrino runs of 5 years each $(5 ν+ 5 \barν)$, can rule out vacuum oscillations by itself at $5~σ$ if the hierarchy is normal. If the hierarchy is inverted, a $5~σ$ discrimination against vacuum oscillations requires the combination of $(5 ν+ 5 \barν)$ runs of T2K, \nova and DUNE.
In recent years great progress toward the understanding of the mixing in the leptonic sector has been made. Nonetheless, this field of research is just at the beginning. Further advance by accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments requires new beams and detectors to reach the wanted physics goals. In this paper we review the next possible steps that can be done for neutrino oscillation experiments with accelerators
In this paper, we discuss physics potential of the Very Long Base-Line (VLBL) Neutrino-Oscillation Experiments with the High Intensity Proton Accelerator (HIPA), which is planned to be built by 2006 in Tokaimura, Japan. We propose to use conventional narrow-band ν_μbeams (NBB) from HIPA for observing the ν_μ\to ν_e transition probability and the ν_μsurvival probability. The pulsed NBB allows us to obtain useful information through counting experiments at a huge water-Cherenkov detector which may be placed in our neighbor countries. We study sensitivity of such an experiment to the neutrino mas…
CP-violation or Nuclear Excitation: Reviewing the Role of Neutrino Interaction Model Uncertainties on Accelerator-Based Neutrino Oscillation Measurements
The three-flavor neutrino oscillation paradigm is well established in particle physics thanks to the crucial contribution of accelerator neutrino beam experiments. In this paper we review the most important contributions of these experiments to the physics of massive neutrinos after the discovery of $θ_{13}$ and future perspectives in such a lively field of research. Special emphasis is given to the technical challenges of high power beams and the oscillation results of T2K, OPERA, ICARUS and NO$ν$A. We discuss in details the role of accelerator neutrino experiments in the precision era of neu…
Evidences for neutrino oscillations coming from atmospheric and solar observations can be probed by terrestrial long baseline experiments. This requires accelerator beams or nuclear power plants. The current status of these searches as well as future activities are discussed. A precise determination of all matrix elements and searches for a leptonic CP-violation will be possible with high intensity accelerator beams currently discussed in the context of neutrino factories.
Given an accelerator-based neutrino experiment with the beam energy E \lesssim 1 GeV, we expand the probabilities of ν_μ\to ν_e and \overline ν_μ\to \overline ν_e oscillations in matter in terms of two small quantities Δ_{21}/Δ_{31} and A/Δ_{31}, where Δ_{21} \equiv m^2_2 - m^2_1 and Δ_{31} \equiv m^2_3 - m^2_1 are the neutrino mass-squared differences, and A measures the strength of terrestrial matter effects. Our analytical approximations are numerically more accurate than those made by Freund in this energy region, and thus they are particularly applicable for the study of leptonic CP viola…
If the lepton mixing angle theta_{23} is not maximal, there arises a problem of ambiguity in determining theta_{23} due to the existence of two degenerate solutions, one in the first and the other in the second octant. We discuss an experimental strategy for resolving the theta_{23} octant degeneracy by combining reactor measurement of theta_{13} with accelerator nu_{mu} disappearance and nu_{e} appearance experiments. The robustness of the theta_{23} degeneracy and the difficulty in lifting it only by accelerator experiments with conventional nu_{mu} (and nu_{mu}-bar) beam are demonstrated by…
In this paper, we have analysed the latest data from NO$ν$A and T2K with the Lorentz invariance violation along with the standard oscillation hypothesis. We have found that the NO$ν$A data cannot distinguish between the two hypotheses at $1\, σ$ confidence level. T2K data and the combined data analysis excluded standard oscillation at $1\, σ$. All three cases do not have any hierarchy sensitivity when analysed with LIV. There is a mild tension between the two experiments, when analysed with LIV, as $θ_{23}$ at \nova best-fit is at higher octant but the same for T2K is at lower octant. NO$ν$A h…
Vacuum neutrino-oscillation probabilities from a simple three-flavor model with both mass-square differences and timelike Fermi-point splittings have been presented in a previous article [hep-ph/0504274]. Here, further results are given: first, for specific parameters relevant to MINOS in the low-energy mode and, then, for arbitrary parameters. A generalized model with equidistant Fermi-point splittings and an additional complex phase is also discussed. If relevant, this generalized model might have interesting effects at future long-baseline oscillation experiments.
Very soon a new generation of reactor and accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments - Double Chooz, Daya Bay, Reno and T2K - will seek for oscillation signals generated by the mixing parameter theta_13. The knowledge of this angle is a fundamental milestone to optimize further experiments aimed at detecting CP violation in the neutrino sector. Leptonic CP violation is a key phenomenon that has profound implications in particle physics and cosmology but it is clearly out of reach for the aforementioned experiments. Since late 90's, a world-wide activity is in progress to design facilities th…
We perform a combined fit to global neutrino oscillation data available as of fall 2016 in the scenario of three-neutrino oscillations and present updated allowed ranges of the six oscillation parameters. We discuss the differences arising between the consistent combination of the data samples from accelerator and reactor experiments compared to partial combinations. We quantify the confidence in the determination of the less precisely known parameters $θ_{23}$, $δ_\text{CP}$, and the neutrino mass ordering by performing a Monte Carlo study of the long baseline accelerator and reactor data. We…
The scalar nonstandard interactions (NSI) can also introduce matter effect for neutrino oscillation in a medium. Especially the recent Borexino data prefers nonzero scalar NSI, $η_{ee} = - 0.16$. In contrast to the conventional vector NSI, the scalar type contributes as a correction to the neutrino mass matrix rather than the matter potential. Consequently, the scalar matter effect is energy independent while the vector one scales linearly with neutrino energy. This leads to significantly different phenomenological consequences in reactor, solar, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrino oscillati…
We analyze the physics potential of long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments planned for the coming ten years, where the main focus is the sensitivity limit to the small mixing angle $θ_{13}$. The discussed experiments include the conventional beam experiments MINOS, ICARUS, and OPERA, which are under construction, the planned superbeam experiments J-PARC to Super-Kamiokande and NuMI off-axis, as well as new reactor experiments with near and far detectors, represented by the Double-Chooz project. We perform a complete numerical simulation including systematics, correlations, and degenera…
Over the last two decades, several experiments have reported anomalous results that could be hinting at the exciting possibility of sterile neutrino states in the $eV^{2}$ mass scale. Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) are a particularly promising technology to explore this physics due to their fine-grained tracking and exceptional calorimetric capabilities. The MicroBooNE experiment, a 170 ton LArTPC scheduled to start taking data very soon with Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), will combine LArTPC development with the main physics goal of understanding the low-energy elect…
Neutrino oscillation results from several experiments and sources are discussed. Recent results from solar neutrino measurements by Super-Kamiokande and Borexino, atmospheric neutrino measurements from Super-Kamiokande, and accelerator neutrino measurements by MINOS and OPERA are the main topics of this document.
Neutrino oscillations in matter provide a unique probe of new physics. Leveraging the advent of neutrino appearance data from NOvA and T2K in recent years, we investigate the presence of CP-violating neutrino non-standard interactions in the oscillation data. We first show how to very simply approximate the expected NSI parameters to resolve differences between two long-baseline appearance experiments analytically. Then, by combining recent NOvA and T2K data, we find a tantalizing hint of CP-violating NSI preferring a new complex phase that is close to maximal: $ϕ_{eμ}$ or $ϕ_{eτ}\approx3π/2$ …
A review of accelerator long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments is provided, including all experiments performed to date and the projected sensitivity of those currently in progress. Accelerator experiments have played a crucial role in the confirmation of the neutrino oscillation phenomenon and in precision measurements of the parameters. With a fixed baseline and detectors providing good energy resolution, precise measurements of the ratio of distance/energy (L/E) on the scale of individual events have been made and the expected oscillatory pattern resolved. Evidence for electron neut…
In this talk, I discuss the general theory of neutrino oscillation experiments, putting special emphasis on the momentum distribution of the incoming neutrino beam. Then I discuss recent neutrino oscillation experiments, viz., LSND, KARMEN and CHOOZ. Experiments foreseeable in the near future have also been discussed at the end.
After reviewing the general framework to study EPR-like neutrino oscillations, we derive expressions for the oscillation probabilities and a direct measure of CP violation. We compare the possibility of studying CP violation in this case with that of baseline accelerator experiments and conclude that it is possible to study CP violation in experiments with length scales comparable to that of short baseline accelerator experiments.
Atmospheric neutrinos travel very long distances through earth matter. It is expected that the matter effects lead to significant changes in the neutrino survival and oscillation probabilities. Initial analysis of atmospheric neutrino data by the Super- Kamiokande collaboration is done using the vacuum oscillation hypothesis, which provided a good fit to the data. In this work, we did a study to differentiate the effects of vacuum oscillations and matter modified oscillations in the atmospheric neutrino data. We find that magnetized iron detector, ICAL at INO, can make a 3 sigma discrimination…
We revisit correlations of neutrino oscillation parameters in reactor and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. A framework based on an effective value of $θ_{13}$ is presented, which can easily reproduce experimental results. It also clarifies why current and future long-baseline experiments will have less precision on values around $δ_{CP} = \pm π/2$ than on values around $δ_{CP} = 0$. Optimization potential for the determination of the theoretically very interesting values around $δ_{CP} = -π/2$ is also pointed out, which would require that future runs of accelerator experiments a…
Is the relatively isolated member of the neutrino mass spectrum heavier or lighter than the two closely-spaced members? This question - the character of the neutrino mass hierarchy - is of great theoretical interest. All previously identified experiments for addressing it via neutrino oscillations require that the currently unknown size of the U_e3 element of the leptonic mixing matrix (parameterized by the unknown theta_13 mixing angle) be sufficiently large, and will utterly fail in the limit theta_13=0. For this reason, we explore alternative oscillation approaches that would still succeed …
Future accelerator neutrino experiments will provide a powerful tool to measure standard oscillation parameters and search for new physics. In this context, we discuss the prospects of building an accelerator neutrino experiment in China. The feasibility of such facilities is investigated by evaluating their prospects to the standard mixing parameters. As an example, we consider an SPPC-based neutrino beamline and CJPL-based neutrino detector with 1736 km baseline length. We find this setup able to significantly improve the precision on $δ_{CP}$, $θ_{23}$ and $Δm_{31}^2$.
We summarize our recent paper on neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter, explaining the importance, relevance and need for simple, highly accurate approximations to the neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter. Simple expressions for the neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences in matter are given in an Appendix. Using these in the vacuum oscillation probabilities instead of the vacuum values, gives an excellent approximation to the oscillation probabilities in matter.
It is shown generally that any oscillation probability in matter with approximately constant density coincides with that in vacuum to the first two nontrivial orders in $Δm^2_{jk}L/E$ if $|Δm^2_{jk}L/E|\ll 1$ and $|G_F N_e L|\ll 1$ are satisfied.
Leptonic unitarity triangle (LUT) provides fundamental means to geometrically describe CP violation in neutrino oscillation. In this work, we use LUT to present a new geometrical interpretation of the vacuum oscillation probability, and derive a compact new oscillation formula in terms of only 3 independent parameters of the corresponding LUT. Then, we systematically study matter effects in the geometrical formulation of neutrino oscillation with CP violation. Including nontrivial matter effects, we derive a very compact new oscillation formula by using the LUT formulation. We further demonstr…
A model is presented to illustrate that vacuum neutrino oscillations can be essentially T and CP invariant up to a certain energy but strongly T and CP noninvariant at much higher energies. Detailed model results for the vacuum probabilities P(nu_mu to nu_e) and P(nu_e to nu_mu) are given, which may be relevant to proposed long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments.
We study neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter using field theoretical methods and wave-packets. In particular, we calculate the neutrino propagator in the presence of matter with constant density for the case of two flavors, obtaining the resonance formula. In the extreme relativistic limit, the result of the usual quantum mechanical treatment is recovered with interesting, but small modifications.
We make a global vacuum neutrino oscillation analysis of solar neutrino data, including the seasonal and energy dependence of the recent Super-Kamiokande 708-day results. The best fit parameters for ν_e oscillations to an active neutrino are δm^2 = 4.42\times10^{-10} eV^2, \sin^2 2θ= 0.93. The allowed mixing angle region is consistent with bi-maximal mixing of three neutrinos. Oscillations to a sterile neutrino are disfavored. Allowing an enhanced hep neutrino flux does not significantly alter the oscillation parameters.
We re-examine vacuum oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem taking (a) the results on total rates, electron energy spectrum, and the seasonal variations from the 708 day SuperKamiokande data and (b) those on total rates from the Chlorine and Gallium experiments. Best fit values for the mixing angle and mass splitting are found for oscillations to sequential and sterile neutrinos and the 90% C.L. allowed regions are determined.
We study physics potential of Very Long Base-Line (VLBL) Neutrino-Oscillation Experiments with the High Intensity Proton Accelerator (HIPA), which will be completed by the year 2007 in Tokai-village, Japan, as a joint project of KEK and JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). The HIPA 50 GeV proton beam will deliver neutrino beams of a few GeV range with the intensity about two orders of magnitude higher than the present KEK beam for K2K experiment. As a sequel to the proposed HIPA-to-Super-Kamiokande experiment, we study impacts of experiments with a 100 kton-level detector and the ba…
A simple method of the calculation of neutrino transition probabilities in vacuum in the general case of $n$ massive neutrinos is presented. The method proposed fully utilizes the unitarity of the mixing matrix. Three-neutrino case for both neutrino mass hierarchies is considered in some details. Transitions in the case of the sterile neutrinos are also discussed.
Motivated by recent experimental data, we study solar neutrino oscillations in the range 10^-10 < delta m^2/E < 10^-7 eV^2/MeV. In this range vacuum oscillations become increasingly affected by (solar and terrestrial) matter effects for increasing delta m^2, smoothly reaching the MSW regime. A numerical study of matter effects in such "quasi-vacuum" regime is performed. The results are applied to the analysis of the recent solar neutrino phenomenology.
We present an updated analysis of the current solar neutrino data in terms of three-flavor oscillations, including the additional constraints coming from terrestrial neutrino oscillation searches at the CHOOZ (reactor), Super-Kamiokande (atmospheric), and KEK-to-Kamioka (accelerator) experiments. The best fit is reached for the subcase of two-family mixing, and the additional admixture with the third neutrino is severely limited. We discuss the relevant features of the globally allowed regions in the oscillation parameter space, as well as their impact on the amplitude of possible CP-violation…
The atmospheric neutrino oscillations and the vacuum oscillation solution of the solar neutrino problem can be consistently described by a doubly or triply degenerate neutrino spectrum as long as the high level of degeneracy required is not spoiled by radiative corrections. We show that this is the case for neutrino mass matrices generated by symmetries. This imposes a strong constraint on the mixing angles and requires the mixing should be close to bi-maximal. We briefly discuss the relevance of our results for the measurability of the neutrino spectrum.
The Russian-American solar neutrino experiment has measured the capture rate of neutrinos on metallic gallium in a radiochemical experiment at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory. Eight years of measurement give the result 67.2 (+7.2,-7.0) (+3.5,-3.0) solar neutrino units, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The restrictions these results impose on vacuum neutrino oscillation parameters are given.
We discuss the use of the CP asymmetry parameter (Acp) as a possible observable of CP violation in the leptonic sector. In order to do this, we study for a wide range of values of L/E the behavior of this asymmetry for the corresponding maximal value of the CP violation factor allowed by all present experimental limits on neutrino oscillations in vacuum and the recent Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino result. We work in the three neutrino flavor framework.
The current status of neutrino oscillation searches with reactors and accelerators is reviewed. An outlook, especially on future long baseline neutrino oscillation projects, is given.
The present status of neutrino oscillation searches with reactors and accelerators is reviewed. An outlook, especially on future long baseline neutrino oscillation projects, is given.
The vacuum oscillation solution to the solar neutrino problem predicts characteristics variations of the observable neutrinos rates, as a result of the L/E_nu dependence of the nu_e survival probability (L and E_nu being the neutrino pathlength and energy, respectively). The E_nu-dependence can be studied through distortions of the recoil electron spectrum in the SuperKamiokande experiment. The L-dependence can be investigated through a Fourier analysis of the signal in the SuperKamiokande and Borexino experiments. We discuss in detail the interplay among such observable variations of the sign…
Modular cosmology is plagued by overproduction of unwanted relics, gravitinos and especially moduli, at relatively low energy scales. Thermal inflation provides a compelling solution to this moduli problem, but invalidates most baryogenesis scenarios. We propose a simple model in which the MSSM plus neutrino mass term $(LH_u)^2$ is supplemented by a minimal flaton sector to drive the thermal inflation, and make two crucial assumptions: the flaton vacuum expectation value generates the $μ$-term of the MSSM and $m_L^2 + m_{H_u}^2 < 0$. The second assumption is particularly interesting in that it…
Measurements of atmospheric neutrinos by Super-Kamiokande an other detectors have given evidence for the existence of neutrino oscillations with large mixing and $Δm^2$ in the range 10^{-3}-10^{-2} eV^2. In this work we discuss critically some of the possible experimental strategies to confirm this result and determine more accurately the neutrino oscillation parameters. A possible method is the development of long-baseline accelerator neutrino beams. The accelerator beams can have higher intensity and higher average energy than the atmospheric flux, and if (ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ) oscillation…
We predict CP violation in the long baseline accelerator experiments taking into consideration the recent LSND data and the atmospheric neutrino data. The estimated upper bound of CP violation is 0.006, which may be observable in the long baseline accelerator experiments. It is found that the upper bound increases to 0.01 if the LSND data is excluded. The matter effect, which is not CP invariant, is found to be very small in the case we consider.
For description of the $d, s, b$ quark mixings the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrices are used but they do not contain the time dependence. In this work the analogous matrix is obtained for the case of three neutrino ($ν_{e}, ν_{μ}, ν_τ$) mixings (oscillations) in vacuum in the general case, when CP violation is absent. In contrast to the quark case this matrix contains the time dependence. The matrix for probability of neutrino transitions (oscillations) in vacuum is also obtained. Naturally, it contains the time dependence. The matrix which does not contain the time dependence is obtained by…
We point out that for solar neutrino oscillations with the mass-squared difference of Delta m^2 ~ 10^-10 - 10^-9 eV^2, traditionally known as ``vacuum oscillation'' range, the solar matter effects are non-negligible, particularly for the low energy pp neutrinos. One consequence of this is that the values of the mixing angle theta and pi/2-theta are not equivalent, leading to the need to consider the entire physical range of the mixing angle 0<=theta<=pi/2 when determining the allowed values of the neutrino oscillation parameters.
The effects originated in dispersion with time on spreading of wave packets for the time-integrated two-flavor neutrino oscillation probabilities in vacuum are studied in the context of a field theory treatment. The neutrino flavor states are written as superpositions of neutrino mass eigenstates which are described by localized wave packets. This study is performed for the limit of nearly degenerate masses and considering an expansion of the energy until third order in the momentum. We obtain that the time-integrated neutrino oscillation probabilities are suppressed by a factor $1/L^2$ for th…
