A matrix basis formulation is introduced to represent the 3 x 3 dyadic Green's functions in the frequency domain for the Maxwell's equations and the elastic wave equation in layered media. The formulation can be used to decompose the Maxwell's Green's functions into independent TE and TM components, each satisfying a Helmholtz equation, and decompose the elastic wave Green's function into the S-wave and the P-wave components. In addition, a derived vector basis formulation is applied to the case for acoustic wave sources from a non-viscous fluid layer.
An asymptotic investigation of monochromatic electromagnetic fields in a layered periodic medium is carried out under the assumption that the wave frequency is close to the frequency of a stationary point of the dispersion surface. We find solutions of Maxwell equations by the method of two-scale asymptotic expansions. We establish that the principal order of the expansion of a solution dependent on three spatial coordinates is the sum of two differently polarized Floquet-Bloch solutions, each of which is multiplied by a slowly varying envelope function. We derive that the envelope functions s…
Unique transformation properties under the hyperspherical inversion of a partial differential equation describing a stationary scalar wave in an $N$-dimensional ($N\geqslant2$) Maxwell fish-eye medium are exploited to construct a closed form of the Green's function for that equation. For those wave numbers for which the Green's function fails to exist, the generalized Green's function is derived. Prospective physical applications are mentioned.
We study an electric field created by a static electric charge near the higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. The relation between the static Green functions on the D-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom background and on the (D+2)-dimensional homogeneous Bertotti-Robinson spacetime is found. Using the biconformal symmetry we obtained a simple integral representation for the static Maxwell Green functions in arbitrary dimensions. We show that in a four-dimensional spacetime the static Green function obtained by the biconformal method correctly reproduces known results. We also found a cl…
In this paper, we are concerned with the system of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force in three space dimensions. The asymptotic stability of the steady state with the strictly positive constant density and the vanishing velocity and electromagnetic field is established under small initial perturbations in regular Sobolev space. For that, the dissipative structure of this hyperbolic-parabolic system is studied to include the effect of the electromagnetic field into the viscous fluid and turns out to be more complicated than that…
In the recent paper [J.\ Phys.\ A 44 (2011) 065203], we have arrived at the closed-form expression for the Green's function for the partial differential operator describing propagation of a scalar wave in an $N$-dimensional ($N\geqslant2$) Maxwell fish-eye medium. The derivation has been based on unique transformation properties of the fish-eye wave equation under the hyperspherical inversion. In this communication, we arrive at the same expression for the fish-eye Green's function following a different route. The alternative derivation we present here exploits the fact that there is a close m…
Reflection and transmission of waves in piecewise constant layered media are important in various imaging modalities and have been studied extensively. Despite this, no exact time domain formulas for the Green's functions have been established. Indeed, there is an underlying combinatorial obstacle: the analysis of scattering sequences. In the present paper we exploit a representation of scattering sequences in terms of trees to solve completely the inherent combinatorial problem, and thereby derive new, explicit formulas for the reflection and transmission Green's functions.
Hardy space on the polydisk provides the setting for a global description of scattering in piecewise-constant layered media, giving a simple qualitative interpretation for the nonlinear dependence of the Green's function on reflection coefficients and layer depths. Using explicit formulas for amplitudes, we prove that the power spectrum of the Green's function is approximately constant. In addition we exploit a connection to Jacobi polynomials to derive formulas for computing reflection coefficients from partial amplitude data. Unlike most approaches to layered media, which variously involve s…
We compute a Green's function giving rise to the solution of the Cauchy problem for the source-free Maxwell's equations on a causal domain $\mathcal{D}$ contained in a geodesically normal domain of the Lorentzian manifold $AdS^5 \times \mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^3$, where $AdS^5$ denotes the simply connected $5$-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space-time. Our approach is to formulate the original Cauchy problem as an equivalent Cauchy problem for the Hodge Laplacian on $\mathcal{D}$ and to seek a solution in the form of a Fourier expansion in terms of the eigenforms of the Hodge Laplacian on $\…
In this paper, we consider near cloaking for the full Maxwell equations. We extend the recent results, where the quasi-static limit case and the Helmholtz equation are considered, to electromagnetic scattering problems. We construct very effective near cloaking structures for the electromagnetic scattering problem at a fixed frequency. These new structures are, before using the transformation optics, layered structures and are designed so that their first scattering coefficients vanish. Inside the cloaking region, any target has near-zero scattering cross section for a band of frequencies. We …
We study Maxwell's equation as a theory for smooth $k$-forms on globally hyperbolic spacetimes with timelike boundary as defined by Aké, Flores and Sanchez. In particular we start by investigating on these backgrounds the D'Alembert - de Rham wave operator $\Box_k$ and we highlight the boundary conditions which yield a Green's formula for $\Box_k$. Subsequently, we characterize the space of solutions of the associated initial and boundary value problem under the assumption that advanced and retarded Green operators do exist. This hypothesis is proven to be verified by a large class of boundary…
We study the quantum-mechanical problem of scattering caused by a localized obstacle that breaks spatial and temporal reversibility. Accordingly, we follow Maxwell's prescription to achieve a violation of the second law of thermodynamics by means of a momentum-dependent interaction in the Hamiltonian, resulting in what is known as Maxwell's demon. We obtain the energy-dependent Green's function analytically, as well as its meromorphic structure. The poles lead directly to the solution of the evolution problem, in the spirit of M. Moshinsky's work in the 1950s. Symmetric initial conditions are …
In this paper, we investigate the so-called Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. The Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics is a prototypical gradient field theory with weak nonlocality in space and time. The Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics is a Lorentz and gauge invariant generalization of the Maxwell electrodynamics. We derive the retarded Green functions, first derivatives of the retarded Green functions, retarded potentials, retarded electromagnetic field strengths, generalized Lienard-Wiechert potentials and the corresponding electromagnetic field strengths in the framework of the Bopp-Podolsky electrodyn…
The theory of derivatives and integrals of non-integer order goes back to Leibniz, Liouville, Grunwald, Letnikov and Riemann. The history of fractional vector calculus (FVC) has only 10 years. The main approaches to formulate a FVC, which are used in the physics during the past few years, will be briefly described in this paper. We solve some problems of consistent formulations of FVC by using a fractional generalization of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. We define the differential and integral vector operations. The fractional Green's, Stokes' and Gauss's theorems are formulated. The pro…
A bosonic Laplacian is a conformally invariant second order differential operator acting on smooth functions defined on domains in Euclidean space and taking values in higher order irreducible representations of the special orthogonal group. In this paper, we firstly introduce the motivation for study of the generalized Maxwell operators and bosonic Laplacians (also known as the higher spin Laplace operators). Then, with the help of connections between Rarita-Schwinger type operators and bosonic Laplacians, we solve Poisson's equation for bosonic Laplacians. A representation formula for bounde…
